I don't even know what to do for stars this time. My kid and I went Sunday and had a great experience. The hostess was really friendly, our server was on point and the food was amazing. The focaccia bread in the charcuterie was soft and flavorful. I was able to eat waffles that were worth eating for the first time in a year. It was really exciting to go out and just be able to order from the menu without worry. We were so happy about it that we brought my son-in-law, who is a chef, a few days later. Granted, we're camping in the local area so we were dressed pretty casually. Maybe that was the issue. The vibe was different. The hostess from Sunday was still her friendly self but there was another hostess that seemed bothered by us being there There was live music. It was one man that was phenomenal. It's worth going just to see him. I'm not sure how their music schedule works. Seating was OK. We were told 10 minutes and it took 35. That wasn't a huge deal, we didn't have reservations. Our waitress may have been having an off night. She seemed annoyed at doing a military discount and applied it to only my meal and desert, not my (non-alcoholic) drink or shared appetizers. I appreciate the discount at any time and this isn't really a complaint. I've just never seen a restaurant apply a military discount to only a few items on a shared check. It's an unusual practice. Once again though, I appreciate that it's given at all. I realize that it doesn't have to be. The food was all at least good. This restaurant's specialty is definitely things that would normally contain gluten. The charcuterie had less than on Sunday but at the same price so that was a bit odd. It was still worth it for the bread alone. The ravioli fritti comes with two sauces and it was fantastic. I would order this again. I got the special, which was a duck pasta. I loved it. My kid got the duck. It was ok but tough and a little dry. My son-in-law got the porch chop and it was also ok. There were three deserts and three of us so we got one of each. I thought they were all great. The cheesecake was the least liked of the three but only because it doesn't have the wow factor of the other two. If you're gluten-free, I would recommend the cheesecake or tiramisu just because they're harder to get other places. Overall, this place doesn't taste gluten free and people that have to avoid gluten can do it without worry. The atmosphere seems a bit hit or miss. I would come back on a Sunday. I like that menu better and it seems a little more laid back. You'd probably do best with a reservation also. read more

We "winter" in Hayesville and are always on the lookout for a place where my husband can eat and not worry--he has celiac and must be gluten free. We tried The Crown and were absolutely blown away by how good the food was-and ALL gluten free! There were 8 of us having dinner and each of us raved about our meals. Their meatballs and the sauces--beyond the best. The atmosphere was great as was the staff--very friendly. Great! Not what I expected in Brasstown, NC. First, it's in a beautiful place, and most people eat at covered areas outside. The craft cocktails were great, and creative, including several that included CBD. Some could be made with alcohol, or add spirits. The one I had was a version of an Old Fashioned that used tea as a part. The appetizers were excellent, like the vegetarian turnovers. My wife had a large curry appetizer with added protein offered. We went out to dinner this evening at The Crown expecting to find a diamond in the rough (of which, is virtually impossible to find in our area). What we found is NOT a diamond, and is still very rough. Perhaps it's just growing pains, but this place has much to work on. First, the positive..and it's really the only one. It's the location. The restaurant has the most amazing views and great energy! The finishing within was well thought and executed. The male bartender poured some very creative and tasty drinks, and was very knowledgeable of the menu. Now the challenges and turn-offs...first, the long-haired redheaded bartender was constantly running her fingers through her hair whilst serving cocktails and handling food (disgusting, and this must stop immediately!) The owner (or manager) was walking around the restaurant holding some baby, instead of actively engaging her customers and soliciting some very valuable feedback (this is incredibly arrogant and a huge missed opportunity to learn and improve). Simply assuming that you hold the golden nugget of restaurants, without a willingness to learn and improve in this area is a huge mistake! Although the service from the front-of-the-house was good, the kitchen has much to improve. First, my baked potato soup (which was tasty), was served cold. Second, the timing of our dinner service was a complete joke...we sat there for close to an hour before our dinner came out. Once it finally did, my grits were dry and my wife's chicken was sub-par and VERY skimpy. The portion to price ratio is WAY off here! Will we be back? Maybe. And if we do, we'll give the a long few months to work out the kinks. Restaurant owners in our area simply don't understand that they have an opportunity to do something extraordinary...and The Crown CAN be that place, but they have a long way to go. read more

We headed straight back to the Crown after stumbling across this spot two years ago. We were rv camping in the area and searching for cocktails and maybe a nice bite. The Crown for the bill with wonderful hospitality across the staff, a choice of both unique (bartender Jake was creative and attentive) and classic drinks. Best this time around was the Casamigos Espresso Martini he created, and gin fizz made on request. I thoroughly enjoyed the Carolina trout with complex flavor profile (cumin, spices, fantastic execution), husband had the local rib eye, also fantastic. I can't say enough good things about this spot., but I will try! Setting - we sat outside under a solar paneled pavilion that was decorated with fairy lights and Tibetan Prayer flags. It was like being in an upscale, elegant barn. Said spot was perfectly situated above the folk school and made for beautiful views of both the folk school campus below and the mountains in the distance. Staff - our server was a doll baby. Attentive, sweet, knowledgeable. Nice to chat with and on top of it all. The executive chef came out to talk with us as well. He was interesting, smart, talented and his only real flaw was that he wasn't willing to move to south Florida so that I could eat his cooking all the time. Finally - the food was so good! One dish better than the next. Local, fresh ingredients, complex flavors, platted beautifully. Well priced and ample portions. What was my favorite dish - hard to say. And really I have to get back to try the collards entree and the zucchini soup to know for sure. Stay tuned. Food was excellent, presentation was excellent, service was excellent, ambience was appropriate ... We have not a single complaint or suggestion. The bill for the two of us, with a dessert and a bottle of wine (We were there on Wednesday, when wine is half price.) was $85, far less than we would have paid for something much less in quality at any number of other places. We'll definitely be back to this casual, comfortable dining spot with multiple seating options -- dining room, bar, multiple outdoor decks ... Extremely overpriced for tasteless food. 15 dollars for the worlds smallest 3 tacos, that had ZERO flavor and not a single spice. Poutine was missing 2 of the main ingredients, but was still served to us anyway on a to go order. Having to return back to a restaurant to get a refund is always a fun experience! 12 dollars for a small portion of fries, with burnt gravy on them. We left and went to Taco Bell and ordered 3 steak soft tacos as a joke, but they were so much better than the crown. The managers excuse for the high prices are that they source local beef and ingredients from local purveyors. Well that's great if your "chef" was able to cook. My girlfriend and I went to grab a bite after a show at the folk school back at Christmas time. We expected it to be expensive but worth it. It was far from worth it. We ordered two appetizers that we were told would be enough to share, the pea salad and what were called kale fritters. The pea salad consisted of several piles of cold blackeyed peas that were not seasoned much at all. I grew up in the south and these were very disappointing. The kale fritters were basically hushpuppies with very little kale thrown in. They were dry and barely drizzled with a cream sauce. We asked for extra sauce to dip them in. We were very unhappy with what we got for the price and I'll have to hear of some pretty amazing rave reviews from people I know and trust before I return. My two stars is generous. read more

What a surprise! We were in town while my husband was doing a workshop at the Folk School. I was just browsing for dinner ideas and came across The Crown. It's just a hop from the Folk School which was perfect. We ordered the Lima bean hummus and kale fritters to start. The hummus comes with homemade pickles that are fantastic along with a few veggies & pita bread. I thought the hummus was pretty good but the pita wasn't that great. The kale fritters were similar to hush puppies and were light and crisp. Good texture but a little bland and could use some heat or spice. We shared the trout & grits for a main and it was really good. The grits had an excellent flavor and the trout skin was crispy & really tasty. We also ordered a side of collared greens that were excellent. They weren't cooked down like most that you order or cook at home but they somehow removed the bitterness from them. My wife and I went to the Crown on a busy, pre-holiday weekend Thursday. It was packed and service was a bit slow, but was friendly, steady, and attentive. Good menu and cool craft cocktails. The pimento cheese appetizer plate was delicious and a great start. But the entrees...OMG. I got sweet-tea marinated trout. My wife got the meatball plate. There are very few options for "dog friendly" dinning in the area. The food was good. Portion size was on the small side, but food quality was great. We waited an hour for our food. Server was nice, but not accommodating. We happened to be there at 6:30pm on a warm sunny day. We had the only table that was in the sun. We asked to move to the empty tables in the shade, but they wouldn't let us shift over (there was no one waiting!). We also had to wait 15 minutes for the bill to be brought out. We had dinner at The Crown on Saturday, April 18th. As usual, they exceed expectations! From the moment you make a reservation until you leave to head home, it is a pleasant experience. They have added a covered patio, where we began our night. The manager, Wyatt, anticipating we might get cold as our dinner progressed to after sundown, offered to move us to an outside table under cover with a heater. We did take him up on that offer between salads and the presentation of our entree. With the amazing culinary flavors and the ambience, how could there be a better evening! I had an out of town guest and decided to take her to The Crown. This made my third time eating there and we were thrilled. Things have improved greatly. I know it is hard to start out getting things perfect and I believe it will take some time to get it right. But our meal and service were wonderful and I plan to return again.
