First of all let me say that booking IS hard. I contacted Sade on Instagram because I had a mushroom that was out of control and I wanted a curly hair cut. YES they are booked out 3-4 months because curly hair cuts are NOT like regular cuts. Not all stylists can NOR should they cut curly hair. These ladies are trained to cut curls, identify how someone's hair looks best (shape, style, products,) and help to TEACH you how to do it. So YES curly hair IS Rocket Science unless you KNOW how to cut and style it. The crunchy heavy curls of the 80's are OUT. Beautiful bouncy curls are in. How could I be UNHAPPY?! I used to have my hair cut by a curly hair specialist in FL. It's been 7 years, maybe 6, and I got lucky because Sade had a cancellation. I reached out to her via Instagram, because her profile sounded most like someone I would like. I booked my appointment on 7/1 for 8/31 and I have been excited for it since. The salon is very inviting, open and bright. Sade was ready and we got going on time. As you can tell from my before...YIKES. I call my hair "Alexander Hamilton" because often times I have "founding Father" hair. Not anymore!! No more old white guy mushroom hair for me. Only bouncy curls and a beautiful shape from here out!!! I really liked Sade as she was fun and conversational but not pushy or aggressive. Sadly, I went home crying because of how disappointed I was by my cut. After expressing where my hair looked thin and the illusion I wanted to create, my stylist cut into that thin area and made it more thin. I was left with a hair shape that made me look much older and almost like I had a mullet. They seem to have a formula for getting specific results and weren't necessarily listening to what I wanted. I learned a few minor tips, but had already learned most of what they shared from Atoya's Instagram. Other than wash tips, I was left without any info on how to refresh my curls and care for it after the cut. After waiting months for an appointment, I left feeling quite let down. Also incredibly disappointed to see the other reviewer talking about Atoya's expressed opposition to gender affirming care. That alone is enough to make me not do business here. Let me just start off by saying that I have curly 3c hair and haven't gotten it professionally cut in about 3 years. I was terrified of going to someone and then chopping off all my hard years of hair growth. After failed attempts of trying to "shape" my hair- I decided I needed to find a pro. I looked on Instagram and saw this salon and a couple others but just hesitated to pull the trigger. After looking through the website, I came across Summer. First, she striked me because her hair type was similar to mine and also she had an opening that weekend (if it was any further out then I probably would have backed out and cancelled). The day arrived for my cut. I got to the salon (which is so beautiful from the decor to the ambiance) and was greeted by another stylist. Summer came in shortly after and was warm and welcoming. She asked me questions about what I'm looking for, what my routine was with my hair and listened attentively. I never once felt like she wasn't hearing me or what I wanted. We instantly hit it off talking about everything from friends to hair to books. She took her time with my hair every step of the way and would let me know what to expect each step of the way. She cut my hair dry - which was really cool to see! It wasn't as scary as I thought. While she was shampooing and applying conditioner she walked me through do's and dont's - many of which were new for me to hear! Following this, she set me up under the dryer. When I came back to her chair, I was stunned at how defined and smooth my curls were. I've never, EVER, seen my hair look how it did. The shape, definition and volume were everything I wanted. Summer never pressured me to buy any products at all- yet she was open about what she used on me and what she personally used on her. I cant express enough how pleasant an experience this was. I would like to start by saying that I have been a loyal client of The Curly Hair Studio for years. Believe the hype. Learning about, owning, and mastering my natural hair was life changing for me and gave me so confidence. I am thankful to Atoya and her team for this. However, as of today, I am very sad to say that I will no longer be returning. If you are a member of or an ally to the LGBTQ+ community, this is not a safe space for you. During my hair appointment today, my otherwise very sweet and competent stylist commented that she "did not paint little boys' nails," repeating what she told her toddler nephew, who innocently asked to have his nails painted after seeing his big sister have hers done. Then, I was shocked and saddened to be subjected to transphobic rhetoric. This occurred openly in the salon by the stylist working at the chair next to mine in discussion with her client ("when I was a kid, I wanted to be a cat or a dog and it would change every five minutes. It's just gotten out of hand" which then led to a disparaging conversation about gender neutral bathrooms). When I discreetly brought this to Atoya while on her way out of the salon, she told me that she was personally against gender affirming care, and while she acknowledged that overhearing that conversation was uncomfortable and hurtful to me (my words) and would discuss this with the stylist, if I were to have a theoretical discussion about a transgender family member in the salon, it might make other employees uncomfortable. I was speechless, and quite honestly, heartbroken. Atoya, if you are reading this: - Trans people are not new. They have always existed, across cultures and thousands of years - in indigenous history, Ancient Rome and Egypt, Mesopotamia, Siberia, etc. - The legitimacy and life saving benefits of gender affirming care is supported by decades of scientific research as well as major medical associations (American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Association, American College of Physicians, American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, American Academy of Family Physicians) - If and when children are aware of their gender identity at a young age, supporting them in this has many positive effects on their mental health and well being. Trans kids, particularly those who do not have access to gender affirming care, are more likely to experience depression and suicidality than their cisgender peers. They are not inherently more prone to suicide, but are at a higher risk because of how they are mistreated and stigmatized in society (The Trevor Project) - 1% of people regret their gender affirming treatment (JAMA, 2023) (Compare this to the following stats: 12% of people regret getting a tattoo; up to 20% of people regret getting a knee replacement; 21% of people regret corrective spinal surgery; 10% of people regret having children; 52% of people regret taking out student loans). Atoya, I encourage you to meet and talk with transgender people to hear their stories personally. Creation exists in a spectrum; not everything is black and white. In between day and night there is dawn and dusk. Between land and sea we have reefs and beaches. The same exists for people. When we are immersed in an echo chamber, unyielding in firmly held beliefs and unwilling to consider new information, we are closing ourselves off to new possibilities, and in this case, losing sight of what really matters - unconditional compassion for our fellow human beings. Believe the hype, people. Atoya just gave me the best curly haircut of MY LIFE. I've been to a lot of deva salons over the years, in much bigger cities than Portland. In fact, when I first moved here I was skeptical I'd be able to find anyone as good as my beloved Madu in SF. I even once paid $300 for an Instagram-famous stylist butcher my hair. Atoya blew them all out of the water. First, her salon is lovely, It's friendly and inviting and not at all pretentious. Our appointment started exactly on time. Atoya took the time to listen to info about my routine, favorite products, and what works/hasn't worked in the past. The result? An incredible haircut that perfectly suits my face shape and brought out the biggest, juiciest curls I didn't even know were possible on my thin wavey hair. Let me be clear - This was the FIRST time I went to this salon. I was stunned that i would need to wait four months to get booked - but, agreed to schedule. Atoya was pissed that I was stunned and asked me to find another place to get my hair done. No words were exchanged....she just wanted me to be HAPPY about waiting four months. WHO does this? Gladys, where have you been all my life?? This girl is a miracle worker! Like a lot of curlies, I was scared away from salon cuts after handing too much money over to people who proceeded to ruin my hair. I familiarized myself with the Curly Girl method at 18 and began caring for and cutting my own curls. That was over 10 years ago - I'm 30 now, "curl awareness" has become a thing, so I thought I'd try my luck at The Curly Hair Studio. Gladys did not disappoint! Not only was she warm, open, funny and easy to talk to, she clearly knew what she was doing. I felt right at ease: for the first time in my life, here was a stylist who didn't look horrified at the idea of having to deal with my thick, 3A curls. Nor did I have to bring my own products to the salon and try to fight with the stylist over why I wanted my own products used instead of their "superior" salon products - I knew everything used was not only going to be CG friendly, but because Gladys was so familiar with the DevaCurl line, we were actually able to discuss products! I love that the appointment for new clients includes an educational component. I could tell that Gladys was gauging my familiarity with the subject and giving me relevant information: I like to think I know a fair amount about curl care, and didn't feel talked down to. I was able to ask some "advanced" questions and got very thoughtful answers. The attitude here is not that there's a "right way" to do things, which is wonderful; there was a lot of discussion about how different clients and stylists all prefer and benefit from different products and techniques. She also never shamed me for cutting my own hair, which I've gotten from so many past stylists! She insightfully observed that many curly girls know their hair better than any stylist ever will, and that a home trim isn't going to kill anyone. I also loved that the styling routine was not only something that I *could* do at home, but already *was* doing! Other salons will tell you they are giving you a cut and style that will be easy to replicate at home. Yeah, right! In this case, Gladys walked me through what is literally already my styling routine, so I *knew* I would be able to duplicate her results on my own. What's so great about this, combined with the education piece, is that this means any client can go home and get the exact same hair without any fancy tools. While Gladys was manually diffusing my hair, her next appointment showed up. I had a moment of panic thinking that she was going to feel pressured to diffuse my super thick mane as this woman waited, and almost told her I was happy to let it air dry. I shouldn't have worried - not only was Gladys able to diffuse my hair in what seems like record time, she was *not* going to finish my appointment until my hair was perfect. I was a little concerned about how much she was handling it as she made finishing touches (I try to never, ever touch my hair under any circumstances!) but, again, I needn't have worried. Whatever she did, worked. She took her time to make final adjustments and I can say that I have never had such a nice hair cut! My curls are light, bouncy and well-formed. Although I've been in a pretty good place with my curls for a long time now, it still felt amazing to have someone else tidy it up, really take care of it and do all the things I'm still unable to do for myself (like cutting it evenly - d'oh). I can only imagine how life-changing the experience would be for someone who has yet to embrace their curls. I happened to notice another stylist, Summer, and her client going through the same process as me, and from what I could tell she was just as thoughtful and thorough in her approach - and the woman left with amazing curls! Best cut around for curls no matter what type of curls you have. Atoya cuts them to look their best and makes sure you have the knowledge to keep them healthy. I have struggled to find someone with even basic understanding of curly cuts, finding Atoya was the best thing that has happened to my hair. After one too many poor cuts by well-intentioned stylists who left me looking frizzy, once could have passed for Annie, I had been doing my own trims for much of the time to help improve the shape between cuts but it was never quite what it should be. I booked an app with atoya last year after being recommended by a friend. I came in after a local shop in my area totally butchered my transitioning hair. I mean it was choppy and thinned by the previous stylist ( who didn't know curly hair). I was very nervous about this appointment after what I've gone through. Atoya's energy alone calmed my nerves. She is super attentive, she asks all about your story and your hair! Gets to know you and your lifestyle and teaches you the simplest techniques THAT WORK! yes the price is a bit steep but worth every penny plus more! First time I've had someone who knows how to cut curly hair - no matter how I wear it! Typically when I get my hair trimmed from a stylist, I ask for a light dusting or that they cut my hair when dry...otherwise, 2 inches come off and it shrinks up, leaving my hair looking a lot shorter... but with Atoya, she pays attention and knows how my curly hair will react when cut too short.
