I'm the kind of curly head that goes to a different stylist everytime because I'm never satisfied with their attention to my requests. My hair is long and indecisive - super curly here, semi curly there. So a cookie cutter haircut does not do. Andrea literally frees every curl and cuts them one by one. This review was for a trim she gave me last year while working at Platform Artistic Salon. One curious thing that has been consistent my entire life with hair stylists, is that the more money they charge, the more unhappy I seem to be with the results. Sadly, my experience with her was no exception. I had read all the great reviews and saw that Andrea was a "Deva Curl" hair specialist too so I thought I'd give her and this method a try when I was in town. I was hoping that she'd know how to give my long, wavy hair the elusive "v" cut that I was after. Well, she was pleasant enough but I was left with more of a straight across cut. It grew out strange too, which was especially apparent when I straightened it. It had lots of different length ends but after almost a year of letting it grow out, I had a stylist in Amsterdam reshape it. I wonder if Andrea is more used to working with curly hair. Mine is just wavy. And ever since my main Eugene hairdresser and I moved away from one another, no stylist has been able to get it right. I keep hearing that the "v" shape is very basic, but I think it's more of a challenge on wavy hair like mine. read more

Andrea is awesome! I found her by chance when I first moved to Los Angeles and lived in the Valley. Over 3 years later, I now live on the west side, and I still make the drive to Capella Salon for Andrea! I have had her try everything with my hair; cuts, color, and even a perm, and she made it all look great. The people I have referred to her love her as well! Andrea is the stylist I've been searching for all of my life! Literally. Now that I've found her I will never let anyone touch my hair ever again! I've never gotten so many compliments on my hair than I've received since going to her. I found her through her yelp reviews from the Capella Salon (the salon she's stationed at) yelp page. She had countless five-star reviews. When I started going to her I wasn't adventurous at all, but after a few visits I warmed up a bit and let her 'do her thing'. We decided to cut my long, lack-luster hair off and go edgy and hip. Best decision ever! Since then I've gone shorter and shorter. I even recently had her perm my hair, which turned out amazing!! I am sooo glad I found her and that I opened up to trying new things. I am obsessed with doing fun, new things with my hair now. After all, it's only hair... it'll grow back. But fortunately with Andrea, you never have to go thru an awkward grow out phase! She can make any length and cut look good! Seriously. In the fewest possible words: Andrea changed my life. By working with my hair instead of trying to make it something it isn't, she unleashed the natural charm of my curly-wavy hair, and I finally feel like myself again sporting my do. I spent my first 13 years in Oregon going from one 'curly hair specialist' to another, only to be blown-out straight or crisp-dried into a fuzzy mess. Andrea takes the time to cut my hair carefully and to teach me how to work with my hair and the Deva products [which are very reasonably priced ... and Andrea is a minimalist with products, too]. She has been very respectful of my wishes regarding length and other considerations [being able to pull it back easily, etc.] ... it was a really awful slaughtering by another local hairdresser that resulted in my finding Andrea, so her incredible respect for my wishes has been of the utmost importance to me. It takes longer -- about 1.5 hours for my long [mid-back] hair, -- but she does such a precise job that I only need a haircut every 4 months. I feared leaving my prior Deva hair stylist moving to Oregon, but Portland is so lucky to have Andrea!! I drive 1.5 hours from rural Oregon to get to Andrea! She is highly skilled with the Deva curly hairstylist technique. One of the true tests of curly haircuts is how long it lasts -- that's when a standard cut turns ugly. But Andrea's cuts keep my hair in great shape for many months because it grows in a flattering way. My wife (Janet B.) and I recently moved to the Portland area and needed to find a hair stylist. Our old stylist was a hard act to follow. I'd been introduced to him by a corporate image designer to clean up my act. I was in sales then and my haircut would quickly lose shape unless it was skillfully cut. The stylist recommended by my aesthetically attuned employer specialized in curly hair. That was in 1982 and I'd gone to him ever since then and was always happy with his work. Soon after we met my wife started seeing him for hair styling and coloring. He had become a dear friend and we left the San Francisco area just months before he was set to retire. We knew we would miss him and felt the loss. Unlike the clothes you change every day, you carry your hairstyle with you for weeks after your appointment. It's important that you trust your stylist and worth paying someone what it takes to do it well. So ... we were strolling through the Pearl District one evening, saw Andrea's former salon, looked it up on Yelp and found she was highly rated. We had just finished the roughest part of our move and we looked it. We were eight weeks past our prior styling appointment, and I had developed that wild caveman look. Andrea told us she'd been trained in L.A. to specialize in cutting curls. So instead of showing the photos and instructions from my former stylist I told her I wanted a softer look and asked her to do what she would normally do. She gave me a better haircut than my former stylist -- or at least what he would have done had I asked him to update me. Seriously. She took her time and cut the curls (the ones that are left) with care. And she's very nice too. Our only difficulty was that her prices are high. Just as we were considering whether we could afford to continue, she raised prices, so we found another stylist. This reduces the review one star, but it doesn't take away from her excellent skill. read more

When I moved to Portland I didn't look for doctor first, you can always find a good one of those. Nope, my first mission was to find a good hair artist. And boy did I get lucky. Saying Andrea is the best is an understatement. If she moves I move. She is the standard all others are compared. Andrea is not just a hair stylist, she a color artist and amazing. Here I am, a woman in my early 30s, and I had never been to stylist more than once until Andrea. You read correctly--she is the only person that I've ever returned to! I have a mishmash curly head (tight in the front, wavy in the back) and I wasn't really able to keep it under control until I found Andrea. She practices the Deva method of dry cutting. Andrea is truly an expert. I found her last January after I came to the realization that there are many stylists out there who DO cut curly hair but SHOULDN'T. It was time for my next appointment with my old stylist, a very sweet woman at a salon near my home. I had been seeing her for a couple of years, and I was always pleased (not ecstatic) with my long, layered cut. Then I decided to wear my hair shorter, and that is when I could see that the layers were uneven and I had a few chunks sticking out here and there. I went back a few times in hopes that it would get better, but--just like a romantic relationship that you know you should end--I wound up with the same old problem each time. I admitted to myself that she wasn't the right stylist for me. I also realized that I had been fighting my curly hair all these years--even when I thought I wasn't--and I should just let it do what it wants to do. So I looked on yelp and found Andrea. I had to wait a month to get in for my first Deva cut, but it was more than worth it. Andrea really does dry-cut each curl! I didn't realize that my hair was so curly! It also looks so much fuller than it did, because the released curls add volume. Andrea didn't just teach me how to style my hair, she educated me about my own hair and how to make it look its best. This starts with making sure it is adequately conditioned. (I didn't realize that my hair needs lots of conditioner or else it starts to get frizzy.) . She advised me to let it air dry while it was still wet (not just damp), no rubbing with the towel after shampooing, and use metal clips as it dries to give me some lift at my crown. All tips I didn't know, and I have been getting haircuts for over 35 years! No stylist had ever told me this before, and I have had some expensive cuts in my life (as one reviewer said, $$$ does not equal a good fit for your hair type). My hair grew out evenly and it was about 4 months before I noticed I could use a trim. I went back (to her new salon) in July and I added some highlights (which I also love). I am so happy to have found Andrea! If you have curly or wavy hair and you are tired of: triangle head, asking for an inch off but ending up with three because--oops!--curly hair is MUCH shorter when it is dry, curious cowlicks that are "inescapable because it's just what your hair wants to do," and fighting your hair on a daily basis...then book an appointment with Andrea because she will make all that go away. read more

Andrea is great! I! I have straight blonde hair and like to have light and dark streaks in my hair. With my previous hairdresser, the dark streaks kept turning orange! I went to Andrea because I had heard such GREAT things about her and they were right. My color is now perfect and her cut is fantastic. She's a perfectionist which I love. Andrea is a life saver! I have curly, frizzy hair that is hard to style, well for me to style. Most stylists just do not understand that the normal cut.....shampoo, comb, then cut....does not work on curly hair....period! My husband and I recently moved to the Portland area from the San Francisco Bay Area. We had been going to a hair stylist in San Francisco for more than 20 years, and we truly loved him. He was great with our challenging curly hair. He was one of the people we sorely missed after leaving the Bay Area. But, we had to find a new hair stylist, so we stumbled upon a salon in the Pearl District (which has since closed). They recommended Andrea because she specializes in curly hair. WOW! To our absolute delight, she has exceeded our expectations. We walked in with a very high bar to meet from our previous experience. And, Andrea has more than met our needs. She is extremely talented with cutting curly hair. She also colors my hair and has done a superb job matching my previous color with a different product because the former brand is no longer available. We walked out the first time after seeing Andrea extremely pleased and are now loyal customers. We went back two more times before she had her baby, and we're so looking forward to continuing our relationship with her when she returns to work later this month at the Ivan Dollar Salon. Not only is she highly skilled, but she's also a great communicator, service oriented, and a fun conversationalist as we compare notes on settling into the Portland area.
