In they store they actually tried to justify that this is enough for 2-3 people. I'm willing to pay market value, even more to support a business I like, especially during these rough times. Sometimes you just don't know what's waiting for you on the Drive. I seriously thought this was just some seafood shop run by Joe Blow. Parking is available on the side streets, as well as the metered spots out front. Inside it was pretty stinky, as with any seafood place. But the products here are actually quite fresh. The place does live up to their name. The raw oysters I ended up eating came in an aluminum tray, and they even took the care to pack the tray in ice. They were fresh and broke off in one solid piece (stale ones turn to mush). Definitely some of the best I've had in town. I will definitely be back. Recommended. read more

What can one say? This place used to be great, but how things have changed under new ownership! I just purchased some Manilla clams here, something I used to routinely get for $6.95/lb ($13.95/kg). They are now almost $11.25/lb ($24.90/kg). Thinking perhaps their cost has gone up due to an increase from shellfish wholesalers, I decided to check around, and fresh clams at Fanny Bay Oysters downtown are $4.75/lb ($10.47/kg), while Seven Seas on 4th Avenue is selling them for $6.95/lb ($13.95/kg). And this is after being shorted by weight for Daily Catch frozen shrimp from SPUD on three different occasions over the past year! ATTENTION to customers: CHECK THE PRICE BEFORE YOU PAY! I've been here 3 times with only one time leaving semi-satisfactory. The first visit I bought a whole salmon and had them fillet it, expecting them pack up the bones as well so I could make a soup. Got home, opened up the paper package and yup, no bones, just the fillets. Next time I purchased a mix of 30 oysters, no issues here. However only the Fanny Bays were good; Royal Miyagi, Beau Soleil, and Beach oysters were all extremely thin in flavour and not worth your time. The most recent visit was in October 2016 at 5 PM, where I purchased a dozen and a half of oysters, some salmon candy and a whole salmon again, specifying to keep the bones. The salmon fillet had the advertised price of $2.20/100g. Came home, checked the bill, and was OVERCHARGED $2.64/100g. Okay, so before heading back I doubled checked the price by phone and the employee confirmed the price of $2.20/100g. Arrived at the store right at closing at 7:30 PM, explained the situation and the same employee who served me (David), said it was only a few dollars (actually ~$10) before checking the price tag, and then checking the price at the scale. He briefly apologized and said that the PRICE TAG OF $2.20/100g WAS INCORRECT and that I wasn't overcharged. Okay, so basically for the entire 10 hour day they had customers paying 20% more for what they thought was the actual price. In my experience many stores will apologize, honour the incorrect advertised price and then change it. Not these guys. read more

They definitely have everything you need here fish-wise and I have no complaints. Sure, it's spendy, but it's fresh, ocean-wise, "guilt-free" seafood. What can one expect? I had absolutely delicious halibut from here that I really didn't need to dress up at all. I could use some help in the "interesting seasoning" department, but without butter and all of the "extras" this was some of the purest, flakiest fish that I've ever eaten. It melted in my mouth. The trick is to bbq it on low heat and watch it so that you don't overcook it. Prices seem comparable to Whole Foods and GI, too. Does this mean that summer is finally here? Yay! read more

If I ever need to be inspired for dinner ideas, I pop in here and Bob's your uncle! Qualicum Bay scallops? Fresh oysters, clams, and mussels? Local spot prawns? Ethically-caught jumbo prawns? Fresh hand-peeled shrimp? Live dungeness crab and lobster? Line-caught ling cod or steelhead trout? How about a variety of types of salmon - fresh fillets or steaks, or their own house made smoked salmon, salmon jerky, salmon cakes, Indian candy, or smoked salmon cream cheese? Or halibut... or albacore tuna? It's a feast for the eyes! And tummy. As somebody who grew up in Steveston (fishing village extraordinaire), I know my local seafood and I know a good seafood shop... and this one takes the cake. And it makes sense - the owners, young 20-somethings also from the fishing village-y region of the Sunshine Coast felt that Vancouver lacked the same kind of quality, ethical seafood shops they were used to growing up... so they opened up one themselves, and the rest is history. Staff is friendly and will even offer you a free marinade with your fish if you want to go that route. They also have a nicely curated selection of non-perishables - sustainable canned tuna, smoked salt, truffle oil, etc. And in the freezer, they've got frozen fish stock, frozen spot prawns, frozen vacuum-packed smoked salmon, fish, and a variety of items that might not be available fresh. I also like that they offer side-dishes and smaller items that you normally don't find in just any seafood shop. Things like fresh seaweed salad, fresh pickled herring, fresh anchovies, smoked candied tuna, fresh BC octopus salad, etc. Sometimes it's fun picking up a small quantity of these items and experiment with them at home. Do you like delicious seafood? Me too! I used to live just around the corner from The Daily Catch and it was dangerous... I spent half my paycheque, and ate my body weight in fish. I have no regrets! The staff are almost always incredibly helpful and speedy, they're super efficient, and are always willing to fillet whole fish for you (which makes everyone's lives easier!) I love the staff picks - if you're feeling overwhelmed by choice, this is a great way to ensure you're getting something yummy! The staff are also super responsive when I go in and say "I'm thinking of something like, maybe, a Thai curry? Or maybe an Indian curry? What kind of fish would go well with that?" ...They're very patient... Don't miss the fish snacks, too! The candied salmon is amazing and ohhhh my god never ever try the sablefish, unless you want to be addicted and poor. While we stayed in Vancouver for the last two days of our trip, we stayed at a house within walking distance to the Daily Catch. Since we were looking for some good seafood, I got sent out to scout this spot. I came back with the following: Kushimoto- these oysters were great! Flavorful, not too briny. Fannie bay fat oysters- These were completely shelled, and were stored in liquid in a plastic container. They were a bit too much to eat in one sitting. Kind of made us sick after finishing it...and then we realized we weren't supposed to eat them raw. Whoops. smoked salmon-This smoked salmon was very disappointing. Tasted more like sardines....really. :-( I feel bad because we bought some of this as presents for a friend and my boss. Hope I keep my job. This place has such fresh product (the best I have seen), excellent staff (the young women in there is AMAZING!), and have great services (they cleaned my live crab for free and put it on ice!) The prices a tad high, but I do not care if the product stays as fresh as it is. Have been to the drive and west end locations and just bought some fish from the new UBC store last week. The store didn't disappoint - it smelled clean, the staff were friendly and helpful and the fish was so fresh and delicious! I got salmon and an assortment of things from the "deli" selection. HIGHLY recommend the sablefish candy - it is worth the price trust me. Love how the bones had been taken out of my big fillet without me having to ask! I will be back for sure! read more

The Daily Catch exceeded all of our expectations!! Sustainable, wild BC salmon seems to be all too rare, but along with that they had a large selection of excellent quality seafood. I should have asked the name of the woman (wearing one of your hats) that helped us, as she was well informed, (answering other customer questions as well as ours,) pleasant and a great help to us in making our decisions. I purchased black cod fillet for $28.99 per pound yesterday. This was a splurge for a special dinner to be prepared Nobu style with miso marinade under the broiler. Imagine my surprise when I got home to discover that the fish was not deboned. In fact a portion of the backbone was even left stuck to the meat. I called the store only to be told that "you have to cook it to remove the bones". What self respecting cook wants their guests picking out the bones from an elegant meal! I am an experienced cook and have purchased boneless black cod fillet many times at other places. He tried to tell me that I must have gotten end pieces in the past - definitely not true. I had to spend an hour removing the back bone and then the pin bones myself with pliers and tweezers - not a fun job. For the price I paid I would expect fish to be prepped. Next time I will be visiting a different fishmonger! read more
