Love the tutus but NO costumer service at all. The old lady with blonde hair saw us come in and she just looked at us. No hi nor hello. My husband and I just ignored it. We could not be more pleased with the customer service we received at the the dance store. The expertise in pointe shoe fitting was amazing. Totally worth the 2.5 hour drive. The staff was extremely nice and helpful. The time the fitter took with us was unbelievable. She kept trying different shoes and sizes until we found the perfect model for my daughter. The owner was not very pleasant. I understand need based purchasing but I don't care what I need for dance for my daughter in the future I won't be back there. I walked in and was greeted asked for footless tights for my daughter. She went off and I didn't see her come back it's not a big store so not sure what happened to her. Walked to the front and she's engaged in a conversation and just hands me an open pair of tights and continues on with her conversation. That was pretty much the end of her assistance. I then decide to take them only because we needed them then asked if I could have an unopened pair and that she heard and exclaimed I opened them for you. Ok so it's my thing I don't buy opened products. PERIOD. I expressed that and she and now the cashier both states it was opened for you. Ok..anyways she then exclaims you don't have to buy them and I said oh I know that. If I didn't NEED them for tomorrow I would've left them. I then asked are those the only kinds you carry to the cashier and here goes ms owner you don't have to buy them. I simply asked if that was the only brand they carried. First and LAST purchase ever. CALLING ALL DANCERS... The Dance Store has everything for every technical dance class known to this galaxy! The owner lady with an accent (don't know where she is from) is amazing. She knows every dance teacher in town and knows exactly how each wants their students to dress. She even guess the correct ballet shoe size from just looking at my feet in cowboy boots!!! My daughter is 14 and has been on pointe for three years. She is growing and her feet are changing. We've been buying pointe shoes at a large local chain dance store. Unfortunately it was hit or miss with the sales associates properly fitting the shoe and finding the right shoe. Though the sales associates were trying their hardest you could tell they really didn't understand how to properly fit pointe shoes. We decided to take the drive up to LA to go to The Dance Store. I'm so glad we did. What a wonderful experience! They spent time with my daughter and had her try on many shoes to find the proper shoe and fit. They didn't rush us and made sure my daughter understood why they had her try on various types of shoes and sizes. We left with a new pair of pointe shoes and great advice on how to care for them to make them last longer. During the entire process my daughter was mesmerized by the knowledge of the woman fitting her shoes. It was a dancer talking to another dancer. Not just a sales associate. You may save a few dollars going to a big chain store but you won't get the knowledgeable staff. It's a great place and we will definitely be coming back. read more

This has got to be one of THE cutest places! So unassuming from the street...but inside, the open beams give it a sort of "rustic" feel and the shabby chic chandeliers bring in the romance. If you or someone you know is in need of ANYTHING dance related...this is the place to go. Leotards, tutu's, leg warmers, slipper, point shoes....you name it, they've got it. In fact, I went in for something totally unrelated to dance...running! I have a small blister on the top of my toe from my running shoe and Dawson S. had mentioned something about some sort of fabric or the like that might work to protect it...something that ballerinas use in point shoes to protect their toes from all the pressure. So I sauntered on in and asked...and ended up leaving with two items: Bunhead's brand "ClearStretch Tips" and Bunhead's "Jelly Tips." Both are like little sleeves that you can cut and slip over the head of your piggy to protect it! So I'll have to actually run a few times in both of them to see how they fair.... But seriously...this place is a must for every dancer...of ANY age! Super friendly and knowledgeable staff! read more

This is a solid place to get your dance supplies but just keep in mind that its clientele is primarily young girls (and their anxious Dance Moms and Dance Dads). I came on a Friday and 3 children came in and had fittings for their first pointe shoes in the 45 minutes I was there. As a dancer who still has permanent ligament injuries from early incorrect pointe training I caution parents to wait until your young dancer is 11 or 12 IMHO. That said, the rest of this review is from the perspective of the experienced adult dancer. I came in looking for a pair of split-sole leather ballet slippers, which I prefer over canvas. They had just three options but all well-known and reputable: the Capezio Juliet, the Bloch Hybrid and the Bloch Prolite II. These are all around $30, so not a steal but there isn't a markup. You could potentially save $2 or $3 on Amazon or up to $10 on Ebay but then you wouldn't have anyone to help with proper sizing and fit, so in-person is well worth it. Also, they offer ballet slipper drawstring repairs for $6 (per shoe) - I took one in and they did a great job and had them ready the very next day! You can also pay them to sew your ribbons/elastic but if you plan to dance regularly, you should learn that very simple stitch. The lady who helped me was efficient and def. knowledgeable but pointe shoe fittings were her top priority - so if you're here for something else don't be shy and speak up with your questions. I also looked at 'half soles' for modern/lyrical. I tried the Danshuz Neoprene and the 'Dance Paws.' The neoprene ($18), which they only carry in 'rhinestone,' are good - better than 'Foot Undeez'. The Dance Paws ($35) are super expensive and I'd been trying to find cheaper choices online. However, after testing them on the wood floor at this store, I have to admit the turning surface is fantastic and they feel great. Overall, I saw that they have a small but very pretty selection of adult leotards and lyrical performance outfits. Not much in the way of adult warmups. While I'll likely look elsewhere for my dance clothing staples, I will absolutely continue to come here for dance shoes, repairs, and possibly tights as well. They know their stuff, street parking is pretty easy, there's a 10% student discount, and if you get hungry, a yummy empanada stall next door. read more

The Dance Store is one of the best stores for ballet-related supplies in Los Angeles. I always find the CUTEST accessories here - if you want to find the most beautiful warmups, including really pretty leg warmers and sheer tops, this is the spot. My classmates always ask me where I found them! Also, I had a good experience with pointe shoe fitting here - the fitter is knowledgeable and they have a pretty good selection. I've had a tough time finding shoes I like but I managed to find a new pair to try out here. This place is not a discount dance store - so for my regular leotard shopping and boring shoe purchases I usually just buy online since I already know my size. But for super cute things you can't find elsewhere and personalized service, you can't beat The Dance Store. I'll definitely be back here and I recommend it to my friends. read more

It's "OK." Its a cute little shop tucked down on Robertson. I emphasize little. Shop is tiny - meaning DON'T SHOW UP ON THE WEEKENDS or you will be OVERRUN/crowded out by kids and their "momagers." This is a dance shop for ballet and youngins. If you are looking for stuff for contemporary, jazz, tap or ballroom FORGET IT. Limited to no stock and you kind of have to pick through. Ballroom -- NOTHING. Though they seemed to have nice selection for ballet and pointe shoes. Nice staff, sweet ladies at the counter etc. Just not enough for me. I guess I am spoiled coming from NYC dance shops! Because there is just not enough for me there - I won't be back. read more

This is a good store I must concur with the others re attitude and service. I guess lots of important phone calls come in, but really, it didn't seem like a tightly run ship. Also the location, sorry, blows because even Culver City residents get twisted with this Robertson ramp construction. Oy. What a total disaster. I am happy I got my shoes--though I think the So Danca character shoes , 3 inch, which feel GREAT on the soles and AWFUL after testing inside for some time--are going to result in the need for massive Advil plus wine. With the Yelp discount--10 bucks--I got two pair of shoes for 88 bucks. That's pretty good and the Bloch jazz shoes last a long time if you don't lose them of course. I would NEVER come here when I can go to Karabel in Studio City, very conveniently located off the 101 on Van Nuys, on my weekly commute between LA and SB. I got to Karabel Monday night at 6:06 and it was all shut down. Not a trace of a light, much less a person. I wasn't going to trek over the hill on a Tuesday afternoon to dance in Venice that night and figured, hey, no big thing to hop on the 10 and get to Robertson I HATE that part of town: it's maddeningly confusing. It's the West Village of LA. Robertson is just an evil confusing street that far South. But if you do brave this Bermuda Triangle: know that it's by Beverlywood. So you need to get to Robertson NORTH of the freeway. It's SOUTH Robertson but it's not a right off the freeway. This will land you in Culver City and God help you when you hit Higuera and try to decipher Washington Blvd. Three stars because my shoes were well-priced and the discount is nice. Of course the amount of gas it took me dithering around that area and taking my extremely scenic route (at one point all the way down to Sepulveda and Washington Blvd) ate in to that savings somewhat. Also it's a REALLY pretty store. Karabel isn't pretty like this: the decor is kinda meh but the service is OUTSTANDING and I love that store, modest and slightly dumpy though it is there on Van Nuys Blvd. This is a nice place--it's the Westside after all, well kinda, I don't know what you call Beverlywood and Culver City other than total headache to navigate-- and it would be nicer if it weren't on Robertson and if the people were nicer. It's fun to see the pointe shoes all over, as well as the little kid ballet stuff so I am generously giving this 3 not 2 stars. read more

I came in on a Saturday to get my 5 year old ready for her first ballet class. I wasn't sure what she needed so they called the dance studio for me and helped me get her fitted for everything. I've done this before...years ago with my oldest daughter, but The Dance Store was not around then. The alternative was a jam-packed store that was claustrophobic and I had to track down someone to help me. I love this store! Lovely atmosphere. Well organized. Super helpful and pleasant. AVOID THIS BUSINESS IF YOU CAN. I had never been to this dance store before in the area so I thought to give it a try to look for new leotards for an upcoming event.... there was no parking so I had to park my car in the fire emergency lane thinking that the service would be quick enough to find something unique and cute. When I walked into the store.. NO ONE WOULD HELP ME. NO ONE EVEN ACKNOWLEDGED I had entered. I am latina, with a smile on my face... i couldn't believe how racist these people are! if your not of any of the Majority Race, NO ONE WILL HELP YOU ... i was looking to buy... and no one even cared about making money!!!!! wowww. i thought these people were peaceful.. but if ur not a Majority race in America... they dont like u and they dont want ur business. this is really discouraging, as i just wanted to get some great leotards, from local store owners. don't get me wrong, there are other Dance stores in the area that would love to have your money and that will actually said "can i help u..." even the women who spoke noooo english tried to help me. i can respect that. but the rest of those people... i cant believe how rude, mean, those people acted. am i missing something? OMG! What can I say about this store and the ladies? I have been wearing Russian Pointe pointe shoes when the model that fits me best has been discontinued several years ago. I tried other models from other makers but to no avail. When I called the RP store in Chicago, I discovered it's closed and guess what, they did not transfer my information over to the Wholesale/phone order database so, I had to find a store with the most models of RP shoes and start from scratch. And hence, my journey took me to The Dance Store. This store is uber cute with lots of colorful leos and dance gear for all disciplines and kids of all ages plus adults as well. I walked in without needing to make an appointment and explained my situation and that I needed a fitting. Jenny was the person who helped me and she was truly remarkable. I've been fitted by numerous ladies in different stores before and it's hit and miss. With Jenny, she knew why she was talking about. She let me try on several models of Russian Pointes and we found a pair that not only fit better than the discontinued model but made my feet look SO good! Hey and they even sew your laces for you! What?! Of course I paid for that service! She even got me a new brand of soft shoes that are so comfortable, thin, and make my feet look good (difficult to do with soft shoes). I used to do barre in socks but with these new soft shoes, oh no, socks seem thick in comparison! And I decided to shop for leotards and talk about service! Jenny asked me the kinds of necklines and sleeve lengths I preferred and color. Well, I wanted to bulk out my colors so she picked a bunch of beautiful leotards and put them in the fitting room for me. I loved them and ended up buying three leotards. That was my budget for the day :-( but don't worry! I'll definitely be back! I don't live in LA but do visit every quarter so this is now my must visit place when I'm in town! Yes, this store really is that good. Went in to get a pair of jazz shoes since my old pair was going on almost 10 years old. Gross. Right as I walked in, a nice young lady at the front desk offered to help me. She checked my shoe size, then brought out several different pairs to try on. She knew how different styles fit, so that was helpful. She was also reeeeeally nice! Bonus points in my book. (I actually should have taken her advice of getting a 1/2 size smaller because the ones I bought stretched a teensy bit.) The shoes were reasonably priced, I think I paid about $40, which is normal. Their selection is GREAT! Before going here, I tried Shelly's and they only had I think 1 brand of slip on jazz booties and they were in a weird color. I was so happy I came here, and if I ever need anything else dance-related in the future, I'll bring my business here. They even provide a list of recommended dance studios in the LA area. Dangling their cool deal of $40 of merch for $30, I was inclined to buy. Guess what? I'm so glad I did! The Dance Store had an excellent, knowledgeable staff and a huge selection of leotards, tights, ballet shoes, and a multitude of accessories for my über-girly princess in a variety of price points. How could we say no to the fluffy tulle tutu with flowers and flowing lavender skirt? Actually, Baby Daddy and I wouldn't have left there alive if we hadn't...the miss was quite threatening. I hope to frequent this store more in the near future...barring that the little one doesn't punch another tiny dancer like she did the last time I tried to enroll her in ballet. After doing some research and asking the ladies in my adult classes at Westside, I came to The Dance Store for my first pair of pointe shoes. My teacher suggested I try Gaynor Mindens, and after a bit of waiting (20 min) I was fitted. I put on Gaynors and the fitter told me that Blochs would work better. I am petite, have low arches, and small, compressible feet. I bought Bloch European Balances and wore them consistently for a few months. However, I really wanted to try the Gaynors again. I researched them persistently and figured I'd get a more supple shank. I returned to The Dance Store because I fully trusted their expertise. I was fit for Gaynors, and sort of rushed along. I got home, all excited, and tried them out. I (stupidly) thought that they were okay, and sewed the ribbons and elastic on. I noticed that the shank was the hardest of all five levels, and thought that was a bit weird. Then, I danced in them once, and had trouble getting over the box. Now, a few months later, I've moved to Seattle and tried them out again. UGH. I hate them and I'm really upset that I put my complete trust in the fitters. I wish they'd spent more time making sure I had the right suppleness of the shank because the shank is so hard--I can't compress it with my weight while en pointe. Not only does it make my arch look flatter than reality, I can't balance over the box! All in all, I'm really unhappy that I spent this much money on pointe shoes that I considered to be an investment. I should have waited and not been so trusting. Now I'm stuck on the ground with my (flat) feet. read more

Visited The Dance Store when I was looking for ballet slippers for my then 20 month old daughter as she was going to start Tots & Tutus @Creation Station. We were greeted and immediately helped me with finding the right slippers and tights. I went there a few times for new fittings on pointe shoes, I was looking for 3/4 or half shanks for a few dance modeling projects and thankfully they did have them. But the selection wasn't quite as good as I hoped. I also needed them stitched (ribbons and elastic put on), even though they were kind of busy they still did that for me on the spot. read more

My little sister got in to a dance class in school so they told her she needed to buy some specific shoes, me knowing nothing about dance shoes I came across this store, it pretty far from where I live so I told my sister to call to make sure they had those shoes, so we went and the service was spectacular, the lady that greeted us as soon as we went in asked us what were we looking for, she got two different types of shoes for my sister and told her which ones feel better, she also help her with some clothes and stayed with my sister for most of the time. I really appreciated her and her friendliness, I didn't feel like an outsider at all. Since I don't know much about prices I can't really tell u. Over all loved the store deff going back. First time pointe shoe buy I scored a yelp deal : ) The fitter knew exactly my size, and I was unsure, but after trying a couple others, we both agreed the first shoe was 'the one'. Went home happy. Update: I danced the life out of my shoes - I went for a replacement pair and decided to try a different brand. Couldn't get the right fit, but went home and then really knew it was the wrong shoes. Supporting a pre-professional ballet dancer is easy with this store in your hood. While I have to travel 40 minutes here from the South Bay waaaay worth it; pro-shoe fit, excellent staff, worldly experience and excellent inventory. They recently have been dealing with flood damage while staying open, but this hasn't prevented them from keeping this Ballet-Dad very happy when it comes to knowing where to go for my daughters dance support needs. And they stock all the cool fashion leotards in all the great contempo cuts and colors, just come with your wallet loaded, as this isn't Walmart/Target land. Heading to the store today. One lady came up to me right away and asked if I needed help; she helped fit me for shoes and then showed me where everything else was in the store/started a fitting room for me.
