Not a fan of this station, but I'm not in love with it either. I found it to be convenient for me in my time of need, but not one that I frequent enough to have a strong opinion about. Mostly because I don't come to this section of the city much and when I do it's work related and non-metro. I never realized the proximity to the Department of Veterans Affairs, but now I know. I'm not sure which entry/exit that would be, but it is the one I used. Decent station, fairly clean. I didn't seem to have any run ins with panhandlers like some of the reviews are stating. But that could be because of the time of day I was here. I also like that the time I was here it wasn't too crowded and it made for quick departures. I was out of there in no time. read more

It's better than it used to be. Thank you Metro Transit Police and Security officials. Pan handling used to be very annoying here, and some of the people doing this were aggressive. Getting them away from the station, appreciate this as want transportation safe and without hassles. There's a good bit to see and do in this area. It is an orange line station. This one isn't a hub, but it's easy enough to access. As for the station it's also cleaner. The grime isn't prominent. That is another step in the right direction. The escalators and elevators usually work. That used to be the opposite. Also better markings and communication. Hoping this trend continues! read more

I have a very furry son (my son kitten), but he's not a McFurrySon because he's not Scottish (as far as I know). So I see there's not a lot of love for the DC Metro stations - probably because of their parking issues, or closing times, which are exactly why I don't give them high ratings myself. It's the New York Metro's credit for providing comparatively good late night travel although it's not great. Still, DC has its strong points. This station is palatial and clean and functional and a lot better than some of the New York stops... and it smells better too, but so do most toilets. read more

McPherson Square has a pretty dirty Metro station convenient to the area. It attracts so many panhandlers. This doesn't seem as busy as other stations. It's nice the Renwick Gallery is close. This only seems to get mostly tourists because of it being close to the White House and other stuff. It serves the Blue, Orange, and Silver Lines. It's the station closest to the White House. This is a popular stop for tourists. It surprisingly doesn't often get that busy. The station isn't terrible but it's not as good as many others. Lots of tourists find this station convenient. This also gets you close to Franklin Square. It's another park like McPherson Square, each located about a block away. There's a few museums like the Renwick Gallery, which isn't as busy as the other art museums. It has a couple of exits. Take the 14th Street NW Avenue exit to go toward the White House. Take the Vermont Avenue exit to go to some good restaurants. read more

Pay attention to which side you're exiting from here. I've made the mistake of getting out at the Vermont side when I really wanted to get out on the 14 street side. Not that this station is that big and confusing like some such as gallery place or metro center where you really have to know which exit you're getting out of. I don't use this station often unless it's to go to the Park on 14th or Toro Toro. This station conveniently on the orange, blue and silver lines. Recently when I was here I was having issues with my smart trip card and the station manger was very helpful (to my pleasant surprise). I say that to say that not all station managers are created equal. Some really don't enjoy their job. read more

Took the orange line from here to New Carrollton after the March on Washington 8.20.2020. Unlike the Smithsonian station (which we got off at when we first arrived in DC), this station was dated and dirty. But it has a good location and it wasn't crowded like Smithsonian was. read more

The station itself is an average station until you get to the entrance or try to get down to the rail area. The homeless hang out in the station just past the gates so in and out is not a great experience. I wish Metro or the police could as least keep the entrance and exit clear and safe. read more

I frequent this stop occasionally, its certainly not as crowded as Farragut West or Metro Center. Overall pretty easy in and easy out. However be sure to check the signs as there are two exits and exiting at the wrong one could potentially mean a longer walk to your destination. Overall inside this station though its pretty clean and pretty well lit as compared to other stations I've been too. I would say its more of a weekday station, when I've gotten off here on the weekend its been pretty vacant. read more

Eh, this metro station is not one of the best. It's kind of dirty, more panhandlers than at most stations. There are two exits though which is a positive. Unless you work in the area or are doing touristy things, there are not too many destinations in the area. Although the Renwick Gallery is nearby so be sure to visit! read more

I was meeting a friend for dinner at Georgia Brown's and sat in McPherson Square while I waited for her. I adore feeding birds (more specifically ducks)...but I have to admit, I was creeped out by the number of birds in this square that were running around, flying close over my head and nearly pecking at my ankles. Seagulls, ducks, pigeons, sparrows, etc... it was a bit much. And they kept going in swarms as the homeless would toss out more food for them. Plus there was the scary guy who started yelling at me... Ya, I don't think I'd sit on a bench here again - I'd go back to Franklin Square, 1 block away. read more

If you want to get to Logan Circle or U Street but don't feel like getting your ass beat on the Green Line, then by all means depart from the train here and walk up fourteenth Street. It's a pleasant walk that mixes old and new architectural styles, and is quite safe even after dark. The stop itself has a Five Guys right above it with locked bathrooms. Across the street is Franklin Square, which used to be a great place to hang with wino skid row bums back in the day, but now there's food carts with poutine. read more

Yes, it is the forgoten step-sister (grass and maintenance quality) to Farr Square next door and 2 Starbucks can be either a positive or a negative, but the ducks can seen as charming, the shade trees as lovely, and the many benches as useful. Look closer, especially in winter or while walking around the edges, and you'll notice recently renovated/redone buildings on the SE corner and historic details on facades about 3/4 of the way N on both sides. The CVS on the NW corner offers local artwork in the display windows as well. As someone who works on 13th and H I still don't fully understand McPherson Square. As Trish pointed out, its situated between expensive, high end restaurants and yet much of the area is occupied by homeless with nowhere else to go. In the winter they own that square but as the weather starts to warm up more you will see more and more workers from the area hanging out in the square for lunch but they are always cautious to maintain their distance from the actual homeless people. In general though this entire area, like much of "downtown" DC is pretty bland and characterless with boring standard glass and beige buildings abound. read more

This was my stop for the Capital Segway tour. It was an okay metro stop. My only comment is, SQUEAKY ESCALATORS! They've undergone quite some foot traffic & need some oil or something to reduce the squeakiness. Thankfully, it's not to the level of nails dragging down a chalk board, but hearing the squeaking was quite a surprise. read more

Being one of the less crowded stations and being conveniently located in the heart of D.C. is why this station was rated highly. McPherson Square is my daily destination in my morning commute and I have never had issues related to overcrowding or extended breakdowns. There is the occasional escalator or track breakdown, but thats not uncommon in Metro these days, sadly. There are two exit options - one being Vermont Avenue and the other being 14th Street NW which puts you right at the steps of the White House. This is convenient especially for tourists. Vermont Avenue exit leads to a nice park and plenty of food places. (Yes I have reviewed some of those!) OK - I've got some issues with the whole DC metro system which I'll get into. This particular stop/station was within walking distance from our hotel so it was definitely convenient. DC uses the color system for trains as opposed to the number/letter system that New York uses which I actually think is easier to follow. My wife and I took the Metro to the Nationals Ballpark. Here's where it got a little tricky. We put enough money on one Metrocard for both of us to get to and from the stadium, but here's the twist. They actually charge for the station you go to not a flat fee to ride. Also, each rider has to have their own card. You don't swipe your card - you stick it in a machine, enter the turnstiles, and receive it when you exit. Unfortunately, this confused us and ended up costing us extra money. No fun. Not to mention, there's no one there to help you or answer any questions. For all you NJ/NY'ers, be warned and don't make the same mistakes that we made. On a not so fun note, the metro was just as packed as the NYC subways. Oh well... read more

I'm fully prepared for the downtown metro stations to be dim and dingy. (In fact, now I hear that that was the original purpose of the design.) However, McPherson Square is one of the worst. It's not too dirty, but it looks every year of it's age. However, it is in the middle of everything, the most convenient stop to the White House. So it serves it's purpose. I can't recommend for it or against it, since you'll only go there if you need to go there. read more

There is a porta potty set up in the park, the stench is incredible. It's is crowded with makeshift 'structures' that are quite an eyesore, and the general hygiene of the park is quite poor. Definitely avoid this park in favor of Farragut square or pretty much anywhere else. read more

This was my principal Metro Station for 3+ years. I both lived and worked nearby and used it almost every day. I got used to the poorly maintained escalators and broken ticket machines and turnstiles. I mostly stopped noticing the screaming and shouting from the people who live at the top of the Station, by the McPherson Square entrance. It is only when traveling with friends and relatives from out of town, especially at night, that you realize how bad this Station is. Many of those camped out at the entrance are extremely threatening, shouting at women, screaming profanities and racial slurs, and making sure that any tourist dreads using the Metro. Because the Station is attached to the Veterans Affairs Department and is literally one block from Lafayette Park and the White House, it is easy to assume the Station is safe. It's hard to feel that way at midnight when you're being verbally harassed and threatened. DC residents are lucky to have a generally high-quality Metro service. This Station, and the DC authorities' complete lack of interest in its appearance and safety, gives the wrong impression. Overall, I am glad this is no longer my primary Metro Station. read more

Have always enjoyed passing thru this station. The platforms are super clean, well organized and (&) maintained. Management and staff are super awesome, friendly and helpful. Station is well lighted and the escalators and elevators are well taken care of By The Way. read more

McPherson Square is situated amidst the hustle and bustle of K St. Although it is a magnet for the homeless and schizophrenics, the park has some nice benches to hang out and enjoy your lunch on during your lunch hour. read more

Its close enough to metro center that I can get off and walk instead of dealing with the giant crowds that get on at Metro Center. Its also underneath a building so your safe during the rain, well one side is. read more
