Located on the tip of one of those hidden Newport piers, this pearl of a restaurant will surely satisfy even the most frozen of taste buds in the winter, or the most melted of papillae in the summer. The star of any dish at The Deck (yes, you can dine inside an actual room...not just in a tent) is the daily-concocted risotto. Regardless of whether you're plate is adorned with beef and creamy, luscious cheese risotto or seared tuna and a smooth, umami spring green seaweed risotto, you're sure to fall in love with the 19-minute rice dish (Is it 19? Or 12? I don't make it...I can't remember.) A small word to the wise, ask the chef to go easy on the salt - if you don't, you might just end up with something that tastes a bit like creamed, texturized salt, which is in no way appetizing. I hate to write a bad review, but I was disappointed with "@ the deck." As an overview the inside and outside are extremely different. They feel like separate entities. The inside has table clothes and sit down dining, but I wouldn't necessarily consider it "fine dining." The outside had corn hole and looked like an awesome summer/beach bar. On to the food - started out with warm bread and olive oil with pesto. For appetizers we ordered a half dozen raw westerly oysters, chef matts mussels, and the brussel sprouts. Mussels were delicious - sauce was tasty with the spicy chorizo, but mussels were small. Oysters were questionably fresh. I would compare them to dollar oysters at happy hour...except they weren't a dollar. Brussel sprouts were ok - charred which was a unique flavor, but nothing to die for. Entrees: pork osso bucco: it was swimming in bbq sauce - not so good. Not was I was expecting. Lobster stuffie (really an app): stuffing was salty and didn't do much to the dish. Steak frites (swap out fries for mashed potatoes): ok, but could've used more seasoning. If you're going to come here definitely sit outside and enjoy the live music and bar scene. read more

First time here with the wife and I. I was a bit concerned about the very mixed reviews. Actually, no worries. We started with the calamari. Cooked right, not too crispy, not too rare. She had the swordfish, recommended by our server. It was excellent, as good as we've had anywhere, and that's a lot of places. Grilled just eight. I had the lobster carbonara, also very good. The lobster was outstanding. Service, 4* Food 4.5* (New England scale) Atmosphere: 3*. In a tent, it is what it is. Food, drinks and service more than makes up for atmosphere. read more

Tip: Inside is a nice getaway from the hustle and bustle of the outside "deck" Nothing to write home about, but it's right on the water away (a little) from downtown and the atmosphere out on the deck is good / what you want for a summer-time outdoor venue. Food is okay outside (I tried a vegan quinoa burger in a vegan wrap it wasn't horrible) if you order the right thing -- but go inside for a nice meal. I'm anxious to go back and eat inside again (we had already eaten dinner elsewhere and only tried the Crab Cake appetizer at the bar just bc is looked so good -- but we were watching the chef prepare all sorts of appetizing dishes from that view). All in all an okay place and you can even eat vegetarian / vegan out on the deck -- unusual for this sort of venue -- but go there for the fun / outdoor / summer experience -- or eat inside. read more

My wife and I did our Welcome/Rehearsal Dinner at Riptide (the enclosed area across from @ The Deck). Since the entire area is owned/operated by the same people, their staff were able to be flexible in meeting our needs. We were looking for a cool, waterfront venue for the 4th of July fireworks (the wedding was the next day). Since all the people were coming from out of town, we invited them all to this event. We had about 90 people. Let me say, Tami and Lee (the two main points of contact we had during the planning and execution of our event) were FANTASTIC. Tami can be a bit tough to nail down sometimes, but a quick text and she's usually responsive. These two were incredibly supportive throughout the planning and worked with us to meet the various needs of our guests (kids who don't eat seafood, shellfish allergies, etc., etc.). It also doesn't hurt that the food was fantastic. We opted for a clams, mussels, pulled pork, pork loin, corn, and a variety of desserts. Everything was great. It is worth noting that the mussels we received were NOT the same as their famous mussel appetizer, but I bet if you asked they could do it. Honestly, everything was so great that I didn't really miss them. The bartenders were also very much on point, and the folks who stuck around after the fireworks got to dance their butts off when the venue(s) went from private to public (around 10-10:30pm). All in all, if I could rate this place higher than a 5 I would do it in a heartbeat. This event was certainly a highlight of our week. Even if you don't do an event there, you should at least go and have lunch/dinner there... its tasty :) read more

Super disappointed. Had a reservation, got seated right away with food menus but no drink menus. Fifteen minutes later a waitress comes to the table sans water requesting if we are ready to order drinks. We informed her we needed drink menus and several minutes surpass when another chap brings drink menus to the table. We then depart after 20 minutes of no service and no water. read more

The Deck just opened for the 2019 season in early April, and we went for restaurant week. They have a new chef, and let me just say the food was a-maz-ing! We were greeted warmly by the manager and our waitress was phenomenal. Our whole group agreed it was some of the best food we've had in Newport in a very long time. I'm so glad this restaurant is still open during this restaurant. However, it was not what I expected at all. I love a bottomless mimosa brunch. However, this was not bottomless. We arrived and got two back to back, ordered food and appetizers after asking for a mimosa. The staff brought the check and told us we could not have anymore after the check, despite no one having one and no one telling us this before. We assumed we couldn't split the bill; however, we asked before going to the resultant, and they told us we could. The restaurant refused to split the check and left without coming back. I have only eaten outside - but each time i wonder why anyone eats here? We had to send back chicken tenders. How simple are chicken tenders? This is a great night time bar, gets crowded with a DJ and dance scene. The view is amazing, they have corn hole and other games - and I did watch Rob Gronkowski play corn hole with my fiance here last summer. That said - Food is priced for tourists and that view (amazing view) but its senseless to eat here. They just simply dont do food right (outside). The food options were on the lighter/smaller side (sandwiches, soups, and just a few entree options) but my lobster roll was delicious. Our server, Jessica, was super attentive, friendly, and great to chat with. It was the perfect treat to get out of the house after quarantining with two young children for 4 months. read more

With the exception for the pleasant woman who seated me and my daughter the rest of the experience sucked. Rude servers. Slow service. The food was inedible and overpriced for the shit quality. Jerkoff said welcome to Newport because it was blowing cold wind and we asked nicely to have the heater turned on. I saw every other table outside with a heater on and one inside under the tent but for us it was an issue. I have no problem spending money on good food. I eat at places such as Morimot, Nubu and Buddakahn so money isn't the issue. The New England Clam chowder was cold and nasty with no seafood. I don't care for Ihop but their waffles are 1000 times better than the cardboard they served up for the chicken and waffles. Fries that were not fresh and again served cold. The burger asked for medium and it came out well done and cold with an egg that was burnt! Waited 45 minutes to get the meal after the disaster soup and not sure about the tuna three ways. More like three ways to ruin it. Shame the people think this is good food. I guess they don's eat at good quality places often. ** BARTENDERS STEAL ** I gave the bartender 5 dollars and asked for 4 dollars back for a glass of water. He started filling other orders while I waited for my change. When I followed up with him 5 minutes later he waived me off and gave me a second glass of water. Like is a glass of tap water supposed to placate me? If this sounds unreasonable please consider that our tab was 200 dollars deep at that point and we were tipping 20%. It's just a bar on a dock, which would be cool if people didn't make it out to be anything more than that, which they always do. The staff has usually been pretty good. Menu is just OK....when it was the west deck it was much better. Their was one interesting appetizer which I was curious to try....the Lobster stuffie. But it wasn't that great. Stuffing was mushy and you only get half a tail I expected the whole tail. Chorizo overpowered the flavor...chef has to work on this one. Shrimp cocktail....Three shrimp were rather small. Should be colossal size if only three shrimp in my opinion or add 2 more shrimp. Ordered mix drink and couldn't taste the alcohol. I like to taste the gin when having a gin and Tonic. I actually had to ask if there was alcohol in it. Wine was about a medium size pour... If you want people to be regulars give them a decent drink!! I will say entree portion size was decent. I ordered Steak but it was a bit salty chef uses some mixture of soy /Worcestershire when finishing the steak. Not my favorite. Roasted creme of Tomato soup was excellent. To be honest for what I paid I wasn't satisfied. They have to improve the menu as well as how some of the dishes are prepared. Otherwise folks just won't come back for overpriced steak, pasta and fish that is mediocre. Wish it was the old West Deck! read more

let me start by saying, the food is worth sitting through the horrifying service. first off, we ordered steak and a veal chop, she didn't ask how we wanted our meat cooked. When she came back, i had asked her, did i forget to tell you how i wanted my steak? she said "i put it in as medium.", i don't like medium, i like medium rare.. thanks Ariel, for putting in how YOU want MY steak to be cooked. second off, we ordered penne, asked for chicken to be added. it came out, wasn't added with chicken. third, we had no silverware, and would've waited over 5 minutes after our food came out for silverware and napkins from our waitress, Ariel. thank god the chef who helped her bring out food was so kind and a million times better in the 5 minutes we saw her. I have been here many many times and usually sit outside or just hang out at one of the two outside bars. It's a perfect summer hang out, it's right on the water and always busy. It can get overrun with tourists but everyone is pretty cool, laid back and just enjoying the summer. For the first time I finally ate inside the restaurant which is completely opposite from the outside. It's fine dining at it's finest without being pretentious or intimidating. It's open environment yet relatively small space is perfect. The chefs prepare everything in an open kitchen and because it's not huge or over the top it makes the experience that much better. Everything from the service, the drinks, the apps, salad, dinner and desert, yep we did it up, was outstanding. Not one plate went unfinished and I'm sure if we had any room in our stomachs we would have asked for seconds. This was a meal to remember, topped off by a great atmosphere. I can't comment on this place on anything else besides the weekend night scene. Being right on the water and right next to another bar which you are able to walk back and forth from, this is the to go place for locals, college students and any other young vacationer. There are people everywhere and it gets pretty crowded. They play music but it's so loud you can't really hear it. Also, it takes a really long time to get a drink. I gave up after 5 minutes of waiting. It is a go to place if you want to meet people and have fun but be prepared to wait for drinks or better yet, find someone to buy one for you :) read more

Stopped by for dinner on a Friday night. There is a choice wheatear to sit inside or outside. The indoor dining room had nice simple nautical decor. The outdoor space is a large deck with multiple bars on a dock. They have the infamous backlit menus that we've seen at other struggling restaurants so that didn't give us a great feeling. We ordered the crab cake app to start which wasn't bad. They also give complimentary olive bread with pesto dipping sauce. Those were good separate but not together, sourdough bread and pesto just don't mix well. We both ordered swordfish for an entree, which came with risotto and "Julianne vegetables". The "vegetables" were large slices of cucumber and tomato. The risotto was creamy, and had pieces of ham in it which gave it a smokey flavor. Would say it was different but ok. The fish was mediocre. The outdoor deck seemed like a fun place to have drinks late night, so will probably stick to that plan if we head back here. read more

Thanks to Yelp I found this place during a day trip to Newport. It was located just down the side street from another of my go-to spots, Obrien's, which was perfect. I decided to try the lobster roll (Newport Style) after reading the other reviews and I was not disappointed. $17 for a lobster roll is pretty average.. there were big chunks of claw meat, it was very light on the sauce and served on a buttered toasted hot dog bun. Obviously I only wish it had been bigger but I did love the fact that the sauce was simple and there were not any chopped up pieces of celery or anything like that (blechh!) I would definitely recommend this place and would love to return and try some other things on the menu. read more

Would give 0 stars if I could. Absolutely HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE management. We went for dinner and were quietly enjoying our time at our tables all night. Throughout the night we watched security causing problems with patrons all night, kicking people out left and right for just having a good time at their own tables. Because of covid, everyone had to remain seated, so people were switching tables and visiting others to be social. Random people sat at our table but we didn't make a big deal about it. We just hung out and were trying to have a good time. Management decided they wanted to throw out these random people that happened to sit at our table and then insisted WE had to go with them. When we had absolutely nothing to do with them and had been there for dinner for over 2 hours. When I kept asking for more information and an explanation, nobody would give me anything and just insisted the "cops were on the way". Funny because I'm a prosecutor, so that didn't exactly scare me. I kept asking for somebody's name and more info and the alleged owner "tommy" got in my face SCREAMED at me, making me back up, a 5'2" girl. I honestly wanted to WAIT for the police just to happily make a report about that, but his aggressive manor made me just leave. AVOID this establishment by all means. I'm giving this place 5 stars for atmosphere, experience and service. We went there for a dinner with 17 girls for a bachelorette last night. Our two servers Derek and Marc were amazing. They were so attentive, friendly and kept us laughing all night and made our party feel special making it such a great experience for our bride to be! Marc had so much energy as he danced behind the bar making us the special cocktail he came up with for us that we enjoyed all night. The DJ had everyone dancing all night long and the beautiful views on the water can't be beat! Highly recommend for a night out with friends, whether it's a small or large group. Make sure you find Marc for some good laughs and drinks, or if you're going for dinner, see if he's in to take care of your party! read more

Racist manager. Stay far away! I am a blonde caucasian female in her early twenties and I came here with some friends from prep school. One of my friends who came here is African American. Normally, I wouldn't even think about his skin color, however shortly after entering the establishment, he was asked to leave. The manager called the police and came over to us. They quickly escorted him out. When I asked the manager why my friend was asked to leave, he said "I just don't want him here." I looked around and saw no other African Americans in the establishment. The manager had no problem with my friend being there a week prior on a slow Thursday night, however when there were lots of people there, he didn't want my black friend to "ruin" the night for all of the white people. The police obviously didn't arrest him, as he did nothing wrong. They asked our other friend how long he knew our black friend. He said "I've known him since high school." Had he said "I have known him since prep school," I have a feeling things would have happened differently. I called the establishment the following day and asked to talk to the manager that was working the night before. I was very respectful and simply asked why he called the police on my friend. The man was terribly rude and said he did not know what I was talking about. He told me to contact the police (which I did and I received the police report). I was embarrassed that I recommended this place to my prep school friends. I told the manager I would write about this experience on social media and he told me "there would be serious consequences" if I did. The racist manager then threatened me! Unbelievable! Clearly from other reviews you can tell this place doesn't have great food and not much going for it besides maybe the location (let's be honest, everywhere in Newport has a good location though). Try one of the plenty of other places with better food and better management. I heard of people experiencing racism in today's society, however I was appalled to be there to experience it for myself. My friend said "this stuff happens to people like me,"but if white people do not stick up for our friends, it will continue happening. read more
