As a New Yorker who visits Newport several times a year (thank you, timeshare life), Jo's is always my very first stop in town, and for good reason. From the moment you walk in, the place is spotless. The windows practically sparkle, the bathrooms are arguably the cleanest in Newport (a detail that never goes unnoticed), and the décor? Absolutely stunning. The craftsmanship alone, especially the woodwork is worth admiring before you even glance at the menu. Speaking of which, the food is consistently excellent, but what truly sets Jo's apart is the service. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, yet incredibly attentive. It feels less like dining out and more like being welcomed into someone's home, if that someone also happens to serve fantastic meals. The staff are genuinely warm, friendly, and engaging. You can tell they enjoy what they do, they're laughing, smiling, and connecting with guests in a way that feels authentic. That kind of culture starts from the top, so hats off to the management for creating such a positive environment. This restaurant was a miss for me. We didn't make a reservation on a Tuesday night because when I checked resy, there were only available times and even though there were tables available, we were asked to sit at the bar. I find TVs distracting while I eat, so I prefer not to sit near them. Of course, I didn't know there was a TV until we sat down at the end of the bar, where people reached over me all evening to get to the the pile of napkins which I take must have been cemented in place and otherwise unable to be moved... I was really excited to try the Barrel-Aged Paper Plane because the Paper Plane is my go to cocktail and my favorite to make at home; however, what I was served tasted nothing like a paper plane. I think the bartender used sour mix instead of lemon juice because the drink stayed foamy and tasted only of sour mix, I didn't even finish it and it pained me to drink as much as I did. The chicken sandwich was tasty with matchsticks of green apple on top though the bottom of the sandwich was wet, The fries were really good since I like them a little more of the well done side, though I'm not a ketchup fan. This dish was the highlight of the experience, which wasn't saying much. My husband got the duck and lobster quesadilla, which was cut into long ribbons and tasted nothing like lobster. Came here with family for dinner while visiting and was overall pretty happy! First, the bread was freshly baked, still steaming when pulled apart and super soft on the inside. The calamari appetizer was a tad on the saltier side but cooked perfectly, and the aioli sauce was delicious and had a slight kick. The duck and lobster quesadilla was piping hot and had a good amount of both duck and lobster, although the red mole sauce was not my favorite. The taste was more like a curry sauce which I did not think paired too well with the quesadilla. The lobster carbonara was thick and creamy and had a good amount of lobster in it, but at the market price of $45. The seared scallops were delicious, with a yummy creamy puree. My own entree however left me a little disappointed with the pan-seared cod. The cod itself did not taste seasoned and was quite bland, although cooked perfectly. Similarly the potatoes were bland and the bread on top a touch burnt and dry. The romesco sauce tasted more like salt and I unfortunately did not get a strong roasted tomato or nutty taste. The sauce was more like a broth than sauce. Overall the food was delicious and worth the price although the cod fell short. As for the atmosphere the restaurant was in between casual and classy. The staff were welcoming, however service was a bit slow. I would come here again if visiting the area, but the menu is just a tad on the pricier side. read more

In preparing for our recent vacation I noted that Jo's had a change in ownership in late January so I was mildly concerned that there would be some negative changes. I am happy to report the only observed change was the weekday 3-course dinner special is now offered 3 nights per week rather than the previous 4. As far as pricing and quality are concerned, these remained the same which is good. My wife and I each ordered the $25.95 special that, as in the past, included a glass of wine and a choice of either a fresh and tasty mixed green salad with balsamic honey vinaigrette, chowder or soup. We chose the former and each chose pan roasted salmon with tomato, caper, kale, and chive orzo with an herb beurre blanc sauce as our entrees. The salmon was slightly crisp on the top and melt in your mouth deliciousness in the middle. Our server, I believe to be Jessica, was kept busy given the number of tables assigned to her, but managed to provide excellent service to one and all. read more

Really enjoyed the meal and service! The waitress was very helpful, and every dish was good. Scallops were fresh, cod was well seasoned and tender, and the short rib burger (competition submission for Burger Week) was exceptional! We were surprised that the fries were made in-house. Hubby liked his Great Gatsby mocktail. The warm bread was okay but nothing special. Hubby ordered the Fish and Chips. The fish was delicate with a crispy crust. Too greasy for my tastes but I don't like fried food. The chips (fries) were only okay. The disappointment was the Lobster Carbonara. The sauce was nice but the lobster was like rubber. Pre-concert dinner before a performance at Rosecliffe. Just a few days after a major snowstorm. Parking and walking to and from restaurant was a little challenging but area around restaurant was good. We were a party of six and were seated immediately in a window space. The clam chowder was great! So glad I ordered it. The potatoes weren't too much as they can sometimes be, and there was a good amount of clams in there. For my entree I ordered the butternut squash agnolotti. So good! It was the reason why I picked the restaurant for Valentine's Day in the first place and it met my (high!) expectations. The sage cream sauce and carmelized onions were perfect. What wasn't perfect was the chicken I ordered with it. I was pretty disappointed in it, it was flavorless and dry. For like, $8 extra I'd like my chicken to be edible! Neither my boyfriend or I could bring us ourselves to choke it down. But I devoured the rest of my agnolotti, rest assured. Also pictured is the lobster carbonara, which was really good too. Very generous proportion of lobster. For the prices, menu offering, and atmosphere (dark, white napkins, prime location) I'd think of this as more than a "casual" establishment. If they want to be considered casual, then I'd prefer a much larger portion, one that I wouldn't be able to finish in one sitting and save for lunch the next day. So the portions and price combined gives it a fancy feel I'd say... do imagine my surprise when the bread rolls were served in a paper bag! Why they couldn't be on a plate I don't know, but it cheapened the experience. I mean, if you have a prix fixe menu, I'd think you're a little upscale but maybe that's just me. The service was really good, very fast and friendly. All of the waiters wished us a nice day when we left. There was also a special Valentine's prix fixe menu (they offer a regular one on weekends I believe) for $65 that included a starter, entree, and dessert- but I didn't opt for it as I was excited about the agnolotti. My mom came to celebrate her birthday week and I was determined to find a spot to have dinner in Newport. We immediately liked the warm and quiet atmosphere. Our server was excellent and refilled our water often and answered questions we had about the menu. There were a lot of options on the menu that looked good. I decided to try the Sausage & Orecchiette Pasta and my mom picked the Butternut Squash Agnolotti. The portions were average sized with incredible flavors. We splurged and each got a dessert. She had the olive oil cake with berries. It was a touch in the dry side but the flavor and the fruit were perfect. I had the peach bread pudding which was so delicious and perfect for a cold winter evening. This will definitely be a place plan to eat at every time she visits in the future. Usually we get meat dishes but the preparation of the scallops and the allure of fish and chips was too much for us. We both loved our meals. It's been really difficult to get reservations at a decent time for dinner here in Newport at the restaurants we have on our list. So tonight we chose this restaurant for dinner that wasn't on our radar that was available at the time we wanted to go to dinner. Sometimes surprises happen when you least expect them. Jo's American Bistro was fabulous. The restaurant was busy - a good sign, the service was great (thanks Kaylyn), and the food delish. Not only did our server on top of everything, she was engaging and friendly. My husband and I started out with cocktails, an old-fashioned for him and a glass of Sauvignon Blanc for me. We shared the beef tartare as a starter. Fresh beef with red onion, capers, arugula, shaved asiago and evoo, I had the grilled scallops for dinner, which were tender and perfectly grilled served with out-of-this-world homemade gnocchi. Hubby had the shrimp & grits, jumbo shrimp served with cheesy grits, which he loved. His dinner was on the prix fixe menu offered all day Sunday through Thursday. We ended our meal with sharing a dessert, the cinnamon peach bread pudding with bourbon caramel sauce. To die for! Joanne, the owner of the restaurant, came to check on us a couple of times. She really cares about her customers' and their dining experience. I found out that she's Sicilian and her family recipes are on the menu. Even though Jo's is an American bistro, I could see the Italian influence in a lot of the dishes on the menu. I definitely recommend this restaurant if you're in Newport area. read more

We've dined at Jo's Bistro on the first night of Restaurant Week, and we had a wonderful time and a great dinner overall with cozy atmosphere and ambiance. When we walked in, we were greeted by the hostess, who seated us in the main dining room with a fantastic wine cellar behind us. If you're a wine lover, this is the perfect spot to check out their great wine selection. Once we were seated, our server Debbra greeted us and provided excellent service. The place was busy and pretty crowded for the opening night of Restaurant Week, but that didn't stop Debbra from being attentive, helpful, and checking in on us. We started with mushroom croquettes and shrimp for appetizers, and for our main courses, we had surf and turf and roasted cod. Everything was prepared beautifully and tasted even better. The desserts were great as well, we shared both apple cider cake and tiramisu. As locals in Newport who love to go out, we really had a great time and truly appreciated Debbra's attentive service, especially with how busy the place was. This lovely restaurant is just off the beaten path of Bowens Wharf - on Memorial Blvd. The interior is a perfect low key environment immaculate and tasteful in decor. Service was excellent! Food was absolutely delicious- I just wish we had sampled more as I'm sure there would be more to say. My wife and I had Lobster Carbonara as well as the Fish & Chips. This is our second visit to Jo's not even realizing we visited before. When we walked in we realized oh wait we've been here and really liked it. This time we were on a mission to try the lobster roll since I saw an amazing pic online. We went during a cold Saturday afternoon so a good martini and their yachtie pants drink hit the spot. Let me tell you friends the lobster roll and fig pizza aka Jo's pizza was ahhhmazing!! Lobster role was SO generous with the meat. So much so we got full off of that. Oh can I share an honorable mention about the pickles? I love pickles and these were perfectly sweet and tart. Jo's tell me more about your pickles?!! The pizza was out of this world. First of all mushrooms, aroogs, fig jam, goat cheese on some of the freshest homemade pizza crust with the perfect amount of chew. Service: very kind and prompt with my order. I ordered takeout and as I pulled up to the restaurant they were walking out with my food. Food: I ordered the lobster carbonara and the lobster and lamb quesadilla. The amount of lobster in the carbonara alone was very plentiful. They didn't skimp out on it at all. You are definitely getting what you paid for. It was so rich and creamy, the peas complimented the rest of the dish, to include the cherry tomatoes (not a fan of tomatoes at all but these blended right in). The quesadilla was just as delicious. My husband and I love going to Jo's when we're in the area! The food is always great, service is always friendly, and the ambiance is super cute. They have a wonderful pre fixe deal Sunday-Thursday that we try to take advantage of. You get an entree and appetizer for $22. If you want to have a glass of wine or a beer, it's $25. The portions are normal sized, unlike other pre fixe deals I've had in the past. The shallot dressing and house salad was excellent, as was the salmon.
