When you're driving in the literal middle of nowhere and you need a lunch break from work. It's tough to find anything worthwhile to stop at. So I messaged a few friends that grew up in the north country and one suggested I go to a place called The Deli Llama. I immediately chuckled at the pun of a name and searched for it on yelp to see what they had. However alas, they weren't on here. But with a name like that and according to google only a five minute drive. I figured the mystery was worth checking out.
Turns out this is not a "sandwich shop" persay. Nor is it really a corner bodega but sort of a weird mesh of the two. It's something I'd expect to find in a small city. Not on a rural corner in the middle of nowhere. Seemed to look like an older establishment due to the outside and the way it presented itself with its obviously hand painted signage it was definitely local and privately owned. Inside you get that corner store feel. From the black and white checkered tile floor to the yellow brass doors on the coolers filled with soda, water, and beer. There are a couple small aisles with snacks and home essentials like toilet paper and soaps. The counter has a selection of sliceable deli meats, including the local fan favorite Croghan Bologna. Which if you haven't had is like a odd salami bologna lovechild. And they sell it in the sandwich size form instead of the ring bologna I'm used to seeing. And the walls were adorned with random Llama related objects.
I asked the girl behind the counter if they had any house specialties. And she said they really don't but the weekly special was tacos. Which I wasn't in the mood for. So I went with one of their deli sandwiches. Something simple and easy to take on the road. Went with a roast beef and Swiss. They have many homemade things you can choose from cookies to pickles. But one thing I found fantastic was the choice to have the sandwich made on home baked bread. A chewy gluten filled delicious bread that upped that sandwich completely. We all know the key to a good sandwich is the bread. And the meats and cheese for mine were sliced right there in front of me. Really super basic sandwich. But I'll tell ya. Do something simple right. And it shines like the brightest star
Great thing. Sandwich was inexpensive. Downside, 10$ minimum to use a card here. So I also got a half pound of the fantastic croghan bologna since I enjoy it anyway. But keep that in mind should you pay them a visit. A solid 3.5 stars for a small store that definitely get some attention. And I only hope since it's so far away from me and I won't be able to go back unless I'm working in that neck of the woods again. That maybe this listing I added here will give them some of the attention they definitely deserve. read more
