Great first experience at the den! My cousin got an ombre (er, is still in the process of getting it done right now), and I went from long hair to a bob. I came an hour early because the ombre process takes a long time, and while I waited for Natasha to come in, the receptionist and other stylists were all super friendly and offered me something to drink multiple times. Needless to say, going from having long hair for 3 years to getting a bob made me really nervous, but Natasha totally took care of me. In addition to being really sweet and personable during our conversation, she let me know as she was cutting my hair what it was that she was doing. I had a mini attack after the first initial cut of my hair, she worked with me to find a length i felt comfortable for me. Anyway fast forward to the end of the cut-- I absolutely love it! I came with my husband who had an appointment with "The Den's" newest artist Meredith Ackerman. This place is in a real quiet location in downtown Long Beach Ca. It is located on the ground floor, amongst other shops, of a large living community. The decor reminds me of a cigar smoke shop / a very clean eclectic man's barbershop but comfortable for women too. This shop specializes in both men and women. Their artist are very friendly. The shop had a cool vibe. The bathroom is clean and has plenty to look at and to keep you occupied. What a great place! The owner spoke about The Den as a club rather than just any other salon and it certainly does feel like a club. I got a great haircut, a glass of wine, and some fun conversation. The club feel makes this a very relaxing place. Even after your cut you feel like you just want to hang for awhile. I can say it's been a very long time since I felt that way about a hair salon. I had passed by The Den several times before and was always concerned about the price since it truly looks like a high end club/salon. This is especially true since my haircut is a fairly simple one. I was visiting Long Beach to present at a conference and decided to get a blowout before I went "on." I was happy to discover that the Den was just a couple of blocks away from the Westin hotel and that it was, lo, open on Sunday! (I think the open-on-Sunday phenomenon is probably a Southern California tradition. A good one!) There was no appointment available when I called but I left my number with the friendly receptionist, and the cancellation fairy granted my wish. The Den has an artistic ambiance that is just shy of edgy; it's warm with a pleasant masculine vibe. Garage-style tool chests at the station, original art on the walls. On Sunday afternoon, it was pretty quiet and there was a convivial mood to the people working there. A nice touch was the offer of water, wine, or beer; my glass of chilled white wine showed up in a spotless piece of stemware. And it was good! Heather was my personable, confident stylist. She's a former Pivot Point educator and did a bangup job, blow drying and then flat ironing my tired and frizzy hair into a wonderful smooth 'do. I enjoyed our conversation while she worked. She tidied up my bangs and snipped a couple of loose ends, as well. The service was well worth $35. Upon my departure, I got a fond farewell from both the receptionist and owner. It was wonderful to do my presentation with hair that I was happy with! I think I'll be treating myself to more professional stylings in the future. What a difference. Wow, woah, wow - is about the only way to describe what it feels like to be a client at the Den Salon. Andy is the best haircut I've ever had in my entire life. He takes the time to ask questions and listen to fully understand what look you want to achieve and is a master at making it happen. He is truly talented in his craft, and I've never been more impressed with a haircut in all my years of style and grooming my own hair. Cristina also is great at mens cuts. I'm a young professional guy and hate spending more than $50 bucks on a haircut, but can't deal the bad quality you get at chain places. In terms of value, you can't go wrong. I've had multiple cuts from Andy. He listens and doesn't go shorter than I want, like so many other places. I'm really happy at the end of each cut here. On top of the performance the overall experience is chill and relaxed. They've got free beer on tap and a laid back, modern atmosphere. Andy, the owner and one of the stylists, cut my hair. From the moment I got there they make you feel like a VIP. They'll offer you a complementary beer or something to drink. The decor is very stylish and trendy... Now for the haircut itself. I'm one of those awkward people who don't really know what they want unless it's a buzz cut! I wanted to keep my long hair but add a little style etc. Before my cut we spent literally 5minutes going through what I wanted and what he thought would look good-- not rushed, not opinionated or stubborn...Just honest, helpful and up to date with the latest trends. I was very satisfied with the cut. It has grown out exactly how he said it would and I'm not going to lie I love it. First time at The Den Salon. I walk in, I look around, cool place, comfy chairs outside. Okay, so, I walk in and a big smile greets me and says:"You must be Robin." Wait... what..? I love places that take pride in knowing what is going on, pay attention to detail, and give me the feeling that I am welcome and appreciated. Only 2 steps into the Den and a greeting like this, amazing. I have an appointment with Andy today, but I realize I probably don't have to tell anyone here, they know. I'm offered water, koffie or whatever, I just woke up so no need to add more caffeine. I wait a few minutes, I'm always early so no worries there and am greeted by Andy who seems to be the type to always have his good mood on when he's at work. I'm not much of a talker in any given barber chair, but this time it's a conversation that actually is more than, the weather, traffic and other uninteresting stuff. Andy is the owner and I have to give it to the guy, he took pride in my ever thinning hair. Even my chopped up eyebrows get a quick comb & buzzer - treatment. The awesome neck shave is refreshing. The style of The Den has a hint of Chicago and that's cool. The haircutting crew is called artists, and the goal is that no matter who cuts your hair, you should expect that you get the same treatment and style as with any other of the artists. Consistency. The location is hard to find--you have to go around the back, and it's not obvious at all, so expect to have to call and ask unless you live in the building. Got my hair cut by Jessie, who made an appointment at 8 pm, which is great. She was really sweet and quick, and washed my hair, which they didn't do for the same price at Envy. The woman at the front desk was nice and offered me a drink while I waited, so I got a pint of decent beer. I got a simple longish bob, but it came out great and was $55. This place is fantastic, such great customer service and they do even better hair cuts for the past couple years i have been wanting to cut my hair short never have i had my hair shorter then my shoulders so I decided to take a leap and finally just do it. I'm not happy with my haircut. It didn't turn out to what I wanted & I've given a lot of thought into posting this review & have decided that I need to be honest. I feel like my haircut looks dorky. I'm not stressing about it too much since hair grows out, however I don't feel like I've gotten the value out of the price paid. I've asked for layers, yet I don't see any of them really. I've also paid additional $18 for some highlights in the back & they are barely noticeable too. I wasn't happy with my 2nd visit either - only went in to cut my bangs & the stylist decided to straighten them out which made it look really bad. I CANNOT RECOMMENED THIS PLACE ENOUGH for reasons of good customer service and talent. I called this place in tears from a haircut I received elsewhere and they squeezed me in that day for a consultation. I met with the owner (who is a sweetheart) and Christina who, through the magic of extensions, has made me not want to cry every time I look in the mirror. Not only that, but she styled my hair in a fun, flirty way that I could be proud of, which is even more than I could ask for with how short it was in some places. They literally held my hand and hugged me, worked with my butchered hair and my brutalized budget (this all happened right after all my Christmas gifts had been purchased). I received other quotes and this was the most reasonably priced salon in terms of extensions. It was also the salon where no one tried to sell me anything extra, no one even brought up which products I just had to have, they even had me go buy my own extensions so the control over that was still mine. This place is epic! My hair stylist is Andy who is also the owner. Sitting on his chair is an experience every time. He seems to know every single client that walks in by name. I don't know how he does it... Everyone there greets you with a friendly smile, offers you beer or wine... But, most importantly is the hair cut! Natasha gave me a fantastic cut! She somehow made the whole experience fun and seem less... generic! I've been growing out my hair and as such, most of my hair cut sessions are boring trims. She managed to give me awesome dramatic layers and even enjoyed giving me a simple blow-out so I could feel pretty for the rest of my day. My ONLY complaint is their sinks and sink chairs are so bloody uncomfortable. I'm a shorter girl, but by no means abnormally short. Nevertheless, I have a nasty bruise at the base of my neck from trying to lean back at their sink. It's almost bad enough that I would go out of my way to wash my hair at home beforehand so they don't have to at the salon. :( As for the Den Salon itself, it has an awesome atmosphere. You really can't argue with reasonable prices (salon prices, so they aren't *cheap* by any means; my cut and dry was $50) PLUS a free drink or two. They always have a light, drinkable beer available! Last time they had Scrimshaw, and this time Hollywood Blonde. Great brews! Also worth noting is their clientele covers the spectrum; the Den doesn't specialize or cater to just men or women, young or old. I've seen folks of all types in their chairs! So happy I found The Den. My whole family goes here now, seeing two different stylists and we are all very happy with the cut, color, and style service. Appointments are easily made and I am always taken in right on time. The reception is the best I have ever experienced. They are just so delightful and informed both on the phone and in the shop and really strive to be as helpful as possible. They constantly check to see if I need a drink refill, magazine, and always offer to validate my parking. Both Heather and Christina know exactly how to work with different hair challenges, and always make us all feel very comfortable, welcome, and relaxed. Always very happy with the final product. The atmosphere is very chill and the staff does try to tailor to the customers music tastes. We have been going here for almost a year, and I really don't think I have ever had been to a great consistent salon such as this before.
