My boyfriend and I have a usual Tuesday trivia spot closer to where we live. One night, they canceled their trivia so we were looking for another option. We tried out the Derby. After looking at reviews, I knew that I was expecting a smoky experience. While my boyfriend and I would prefer to be in a clean air room, we knew to expect this and went anyway. The trivia was fun, the service was fabulous, and the food was very tasty. We got the queso, medium wings, hot honey wings, and a salad with honey mustard. The wings were SO GOOD! The only thing we didn't love was their honey mustard, it seemed homemade, and for some reason felt a little bit too mustardy to us. I liked the vibes in here. It was sort of a small dive bar, where everyone knows each other. My boyfriend and I agreed that we could come back at some point. I do wish it was less smoky, but I respect that some restaurants should allow smoking inside. They also make a delicious, reasonably priced vodka cranberry drink. read more

This place is the true definition of a dive bar. If you are not a regular of this bar, prepare to sit and wait for service. I've been here a couple of times and depending on the day and the bartender I can get served as soon as I walk in or wait like I did for 20 minutes like today. This location does allow smoking inside the building so be prepared to smell like cigarettes when you walk out. Also, it's next to a cigar shop so a lot of the patrons go to the shop and then come have a beer at the bar. today when I came in, I ordered a draft beer that tasted warm, and when I told the bartender she kind of got annoyed with me and asked if I wanted something else, when I asked what kind bottle options had she got annoyed and walked away from me. I then ordered some boneless wings and fries and the fries were OK but the boneless wings tasted like they were cooked just a minute too long. I did like the fact that they had almost every football game on the screen, and pool tables but I will probably go somewhere else for a while. read more

The location is good but kind of hidden in Alpharetta city limits. It's a nice sports bar with many TV's and pool tables. We tried the food and was good, typical bar food menu items and price was reasonable. The bartender ladies were friendly and provided good service. I would come back as this isn't too far of a drive from my house. This isn't a family friendly sports bar and for adults only. They denied my service dog which is illegal to do in Georgia. My dog is a trained service dog and wasn't misbehaving at all.

If you don't come here every single day of the week + weekend the bartenders treat you like you are nothing, especially the female ones. They will come up to you and ask you for a drink, but they say if you're not going to tip, then I don't even want to get you a drink the short haired bartender is so rude. She tried to check my ID even though I am 28 years old with a black light, and after it passed, she shined it into my eyes. Besides, that all, I'm really saying is that if you are not a local or a regular, and do not come in here every single day of the week, you are not accepted all the bartenders judge you, and talk crap about you to the regulars. This place is filthy. You are allowed to smoke in here, so treated at your own cost. I wish the bartenders would be more friendly because this is just right across from my neighborhood and I want to support a local business but why would I ever want to be in a place where my service is not valued unless I come here every day of the week and the bartenders know my name and if I don't tip more than two dollars then the lady bartenders call you out every time and don't want to serve you next time you come to the bar and are so rude. It wasn't too crowded, which was nice, but when the trivia announcements started, it was hard to continue conversations. But the thing that sticks in my memory is the overwhelming smoke smell. If this helps, I walked in here for some bar food five years ago. I haven't been back since. I'd try and describe the interior, but my eyes started watering the minute I walked into the place. You see, it was thick with cigarette smoke. And there were only about 5 people total in the bar at the time. I could only imagine the suburbanite nicotine mummies who frequented The Derby. Over the years, I sincerely believe they had inundated the establishment with the the pollution of their bad habit such that a newcomer such as myself would be presented with one of two choices upon entering the establishment. Choice #1 -- immediately taking up smoking in order to remain in the bar. Choice #2 -- leave immediately for fear of becoming the world's fastest secondhand smoking statistic. I've never been back. I also made it rule that any place which forced me to change monthly disposable contacts 2 weeks early for fear of nicotine poisoning wasn't worth my time or money. Had a blast here Friday night. The place wasn't crowded. The Live Band was AMAZING and the location is very nice. However, I waited 13 minutes for a waitress to no avail. I finally went to the bar to request one to come to my table. Once she came she was very nice and pleasant. I enjoyed the food as well. I ordered a Turkey Burger to no avail as they were out of Turkey. I ended up with the Old Fashioned and it was very pleasing. Good portion size. The drench fries are perfectly seasoned, and the burger was so juicy. Overall, I give this establishment a 7/10. read more

It's time for a fresh take on an old haunt. I wandered into The Derby about 4 years ago and I've been a regular customer ever since. The decor could best be described as neo-basement with enough cheap wood paneling to make any Elks club proud. And, the ghost of cigarettes past oozes from every nook and cranny. The clientele is eclectic to say the least. From bikers to bankers and everywhere in between. You can chat with a new acquaintance or forge long lasting friendships. The food lineup is solid. The burgers are big and the wings are usually outstanding. I also enjoy the chicken fajita nachos and Taco Tuesdays. Most of the staff has been there awhile and they don't take any guff. However, if you treat them well, they will return the favor in kind and welcome you back again and again. In sum, the Derby is a great place to have a few drinks and a few laughs, blow off some steam, catch a game, or make a new friend. read more

If you are looking for a way out of this world, here is one method of doing it. I am pretty sure you can acquire cancer within a couple of hours of walking in this place. I stopped in one evening for a quick burger at the bar. The bar was crowded (probably 20 peeps), and I was the ONLY one who didnt have a pack of cigarettes sitting in front of me. And trust me...they werent afraid to light them up either. You know the disgusting "smoke rooms" at the airport...curiously similar! The prices were fair and the burger was pretty tasty, but I found myself trying to take quick bites so as not to inhale too much smoke with the burger. I give the place 1 star for the good burger, otherwise I would have said 0 stars within the review. Even with the good burger, I will never step foot in this place again unless they decide to close down their future cancer patient ward. Its hard to give this place more then three stars, even though I know new owners just came in and are fixing the place up, hopefully I can update this entry in a few weeks after they have had time to get it going. The plus sides are that the food is actually good, here. Ive had a few different things, and each time its good. And the wings are killer. I could eat them all day. Also a good number of pool tables, so not much of a wait. Again, killer. Downer? Smoke. This place isn't called the "Dirty Derby" for nothing. I walked out feeling like Pigpen from Charlie Brown. I give the Derby 4 stars because it is good at what it is supposed to be. It is not meant to be a fine dining establishment or even a family friendly local sports pub like Taco Mac. It is a local bar, for locals to get away for a couple of hours. Smoking is allowed so if that is a problem for you, yes you will not be pleased. The food is in my opinion is well above average for a local "dive" bar. Burgers are actually really good in my opinion. The bartenders are really nice. Jen, Tara, and Linsey will take good care of you if you come in with a smile. They will remember you on your second visit if you are nice and take fair care of them. They are always open late, so if for some reason you need a late night cap it is perfect. I sometimes stop in on nights that I land late at Hartsfield. Local soccer moms and dads beware. You may just sneak in here one night to get away, and see a neighbor in your subdivision who did the same. Don't be shy or duck out, because they are there for the same reason you are, so pull up a stool next to them, get over it, and have a good time with them. read more

The Derby is a niche restaurant. There's no doubt about it. The crowd that normally comes in here isn't your normal T.G.I.Friday's group of people. The people that frequent the establishment are anywhere between your normal twenty-something to old crusty men that will relay their World War II stories if you give them a chance. Next is the service. Tara, by far, is the best waitress in the place. She's always there to help and willing to work with anybody for their order. If you want to change your burger to something completely different, she'll make it happen. The rest of the waitstaff is just as professional and helpful. About the food, it's bar food. Nothing special. Nothing horrible. If you've been to any sports bar, you're not in for anything new. If you've managed to keep from stepping foot into a sports bar, well, you're in for quite a surprise. Overall, the Derby is a nice place. It's established, it's in the middle of a strip mall across from what once used to be a Circle K and quite honestly, it holds a lot of memories for me. My wife and i consider this our favorite neighborhood bar. We moved to Roswell from Austin Tex and because we enjoy occasional cigars never had such a venue there in Austin. We were happy to find a number of cigar friendly places here but most are too expensive or too divey. Special thanks to the accommodating bartender who switched one TV to TCM for us (we have 0 interest in sports) and we spent the afternoon watching Robert Wise' beautiful B&W 1956 "Somebody Up There Likes Me". The Derby is great. It has friendly and helpful staff. It has great wings, good cheese steak wraps, great homemade chips, etc. I'm actually laughing at a couple of the reviews posted about smoking and cancer. If you go to a sports bar, expect smoke/drinking/sports/pool/GT/etc. If you aren't into any of that, DON'T GO TO A F*ING sports bar! Go to Fresh Market (walking distance), buy your fruit and vegetables, drive home in your SUV, and juice until your hearts content. Went to the Derby tonight because I wanted some Wings. They usually have very good wings. Tonight not so much. They were small and did not have much wing sauce. They were hardly coated. I asked for a side Caesar salad but I got a large salad that was very drenched in dressing. My wife ordered a Burrito and had to send it back as it was cold. They said they had a new cook. Went back for the St Patrick special Corned beef and cabbage. I have never had corned beef that tough and chewy. I used to look forward to this yearly but not anymore. read more

Went for lunch here and it is good bar food. If you like barfood you'll like it. Nothing special, better then some places similar to this, But it is still barfood.
