First of all we purchased a ring here many years ago and at the time we found it to be satisfactory. We walked in on a Sunday looking for some direction on some old diamond rings we had from my Grandmother. Should we redesign make something new out of them ect. The place was near empty on a Sunday that was very busy outside. That alone should tell you something. Anyway after a 15min wait the owner comes out and looks at the rings. Ehh this is crap he says and just scrap "are you sure they are diamonds" I thought to myself is this guy kidding a supposed expert asking me if they were diamonds and as he could not tell him self. Then he said he could recut them and polish them.. anyway these were not small diamonds about 1.5 carrot each in a dual setting. So his comments were strange and the wait was very long. Then he said to wait for another guy to show up with a design book. That was 15min and after that I just said lets get out of here. This place just did not sit right with me almost like they don't need the business and if you are not buying a 10k ring then you can just wait for the old owner to come out and insult your intelligence. Some of the places I went to showed me diamonds with obvious issues, and some places even had obvious issues with their "good diamonds". Some places tried to sell me rings with 65% platinum and rhodium plating - implying it was a high end platinum ring (one place even told me 65% was the highest amount of platinum you can get in a ring). I even went to some high end brand name stores like Tiffany & Co. The lady at Tiffany made me think I was an awful person, and my implied my fiancée would hate anything less than their $20K engagement ring. The last place I went to was The Diamond Source in Old Town, which was where my best man bought his wife's ring. Before going to the see Marco the best diamonds I saw were at Tiffany. In my opinion Marco's diamonds with the same carat, color, and clarity were better than what I saw at Tiffany. Marco's diamonds are beautifully cut. The value is *much* better at The Diamond Source vs Tiffany. This place is one of the best jewelers in town. I have come in here a few times, and each time Marco (the owner)has helped me. They are very friendly and not pushy at all. The best part about Diamond Source is in the diamonds cut. They way the cut diamonds is some of the best Ive seen, and Ive seen a lot of nice jewelry. The way the diamond sparkles is incredible. You can get a high quality piece here. However, this place is not the best for people on a very low and tight budget. This review is way overdue! First off I want to thank Frannie, Marco, and Dave for always providing fantastic service. We first bought my beautiful engagement ring here in 2005, and added stud earrings, necklaces, and most recently a stunning custom made ring. My husband and I stopped in on our anniversary to browse for a ring, with no particular idea in mind. My husband pointed out a halo ring he liked and I tried it on. I instantly fell in love with the halo design, but this was a bit more than we had in mind. I happened to be wearing two channel set diamond bands, and Frannie looked at them and told us she could make a custom ring using the diamonds from my rings and we could purchase a center stone. We debated getting a semi-precious stone, but this design looked so nice with a diamond. I had a platinum diamond wedding band, and Frannie showed us a diamond just under 1 carat that she said would work perfectly with the 20 diamonds from my channel set rings and wedding band. We went ahead and ordered the ring which would be made in platinum. They made the mold and had me stop in and try on to confirm fit and design. I have to admit it was hard to anticipate the final design from the green mold, but let me tell you, when we picked up the custom made ring, my husband and I extremely surprised at the fantastic quality and look of the ring. We went to several place that were all ok but when we stopped at the Diamond Source " our 5th. stop" we were sold. I purchased a custom ring from the Diamond Source in 2007. A few stones fell out (I hadn't had them checked in years so I'm partly to blame). They told me they would fix the ring and gave me an estimate. I left my ring there and waited over two months. I called many times and always got an excuse why it wasn't ready. Valentines Day rush, couldn't find the right stones, didn't like how it was coming along so were re-setting them, Easter rush (I'm not kidding - these were the excuses!) and finally a death in the family. I've been waiting a few weeks to post this review (after I proposed to my girlfriend). This is one of the most unprofessional shops I've been to. For a place that has a role in the biggest decision of your life (an engagement) I'm surprised they are still in business. The Bad: * They say they don't get paid commission but they sure don't act like it. Very pushy and don't listen to what you want. * When choosing a custom ring they tell you to email the design. Then they don't respond to said email. You then call them since they do respond and they say they haven't received the email. Then you send the same email again and then call again and then they had the emails the while time but haven't looked at it. * The whole time they tell you they can meet your deadline (in my case it was 3 weeks) then with 1 week remaining they say they can't do it. The Good: * Fanny is amazing and the whole reason I decided to get a ring there (talked to her as I was going to leave). She listens to you and wants to make YOUR ring. (unfortunately the shop as a whole isn't as competent) If you still choose to go there ask for Fanny. Tips: * If you don't know what you want don't get suckered to looking at this big black and white catalog. The catalog is from www.stuller.com (where they order their rings) and their website is a lot easier to use. I am a reoccurring customer. My husband bought me a beautiful wedding ring. However it requires to be maintenanced but my issue is the last 4 times I've attempted to go there and have it worked on the jewelry is not there. One time I made the trip on Saturday bcuz I called on Friday to confirm the jewelry was going to be working on Saturday. Got down there (Live in Vista) and there was a festival going on in the streets were blocked and the jewelry did not come in! And the jewelry doesn't work Sunday due to their religion. Makes it EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to have work done. Today I called again and he's not going to be in. I suggested maybe they have a backup jewelry for situations like this and was told they do but it's off site. Kinda missed my point. Diamond source, you should consider getting a second on site jeweler for situations that arise. Please !! Unfortunately most people work during the week and only can make it out on a weekend and when the jeweler is not there on a Sunday it only leaves you one day on the weekend to get down there. I decided to surprise my wife with a new Sapphire & Diamond ring set in Platinum for her 50th birthday. I had been looking all over San Diego & Orange County for over 18 months. I always knew that the Diamond Source would be my final stop. My wife any I have always loved the honesty and quality of the Diamond Source. I knew what I wanted to purchase, so I just needed to sit down with Marco and finalize the stone sizes, quality & design. Marco is truly a KING in the jewelry profession. As we were in the planning and discussion process, I realized I was at the final stop of this long journey. Marco went into the safe and brought out the most beautiful dark blue (I have seen hundreds) Sapphires I have ever seen. I decided on 7 Sapphires surrounded by 24 brilliant Diamonds. We really had to get the amount of stones spot on because this ring had to be absolutely perfect for her birthday surprise. I knew that my wife loves a really wide & low profile ring and those dark blue Sapphires really popped being surrounded by the Diamonds. As I was explaining and bouncing ideas off Marco, He kept looking up and envisioning what I was asking of him. Marco told me he knew exactly what I wanted and could have the ring completed within my time frame. After Marco and I were finished, I sat down with Fanny. Fanny was also beyond AWESOME! Fanny and I went over several more items. I also gave her a cash deposit along with all of my contact information. I explained to Fanny that I could NEVER be CALLED or EMAILED since I was already scared my wife might find out about the ring and the surprise would be ruined. Fanny promised that she would only contact me at work if it was an emergency. Since I was calling her several times a week, that was never a problem. A few days later, I ended up changing out the Diamonds to a slightly larger size to flow better with the Sapphires. Fanny also knew how hard it was for me to drive over to Old Town without my wife finding out. Fanny was nice enough to stop by my work so I could give her an additional cash deposit because I couldn't use our credit card without my wife finding out. I can't even begin to explain how AMAZING these guys were to deal with & this was all before I ever saw the finished ring. After I found out the ring was finished, I had to figure out a sneaky way of getting my wife down to the Diamond Source (less that a week from her birthday) without her getting suspicious. So, I decided to come up with another simple, yet amazing, LIE. I Told my wife I dropped off my watch to the Diamond Source for a free polishing and we needed to stop by and pick it up. By the time we got down to the store, I had already advised Fanny of my sneaky plan and she was totally on board with it. Fanny also informed her security guard of my lie so he could act as if he had never met me since I had been into the store four times in the preceding weeks. Our son was also in on this whole elaborate lie as well and he was ready for action.
