I immediately noticed the gothic Victorian decor and was awed by what the young folk now have to choose from when going out for a night of hoopla. The waitress recommended a gin cocktail called the bees knees and it tasted like a sweet glass of mead. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend trying one out for yourself. The dance floor was small but large enough for what this joint can hold. From what I can remember the DJ was quite good and everyone on the dance floor was completely inthralled by his mix.

The one downside is that, as the name implies, it's DV8 Underground which means wobbling down that flight of stairs after a smoke break while you've already had a few drinks, but that comes down to how much you do or don't drink. The music is always decent to great, from open mic to planned shows with low cost tickets (5-15 on average). There's a bit of variety, acoustic to punk to post rock, so almost anyone can find at least one DV8 show that they've enjoyed more than just drinks at. The bathrooms (or at least the ladies) is pretty clean, some graffiti (but hey, I think it just adds to the atmosphere), always stocked with toilet paper/paper towels/soap unlike a lot of bars in the area.

The volume is ridiculously loud for the venue, which is why I took one star off. Your eardrums will be in actual pain (both from the volume and the more questionable bands playing). They do sell ear plugs, but I doubt they would help overtly much. If you're into the type of music, then I'd say yeah come on down. For myself it was mostly a painful experience. The space itself is decently large. The washrooms are in a state of disrepair and not for the squeamish type. I took a second star off because the place reeked of smoke. I'm very sensitive to smoke and my eyes started burning within half an hour of being inside the place.

The manager gal (Sly) is a hard working gal to deliver live music and great food to make this place welcoming. great 2 burger sliders deal with lettuce tomatoes onions a beer and home cut fries with skins on! It is VERY frowned upon to do so actually. It has a bar where you can grab drinks, but there is no table service. Popcorn and nuts were also available for a small charge. What makes this venue unique is the quality of musicians that pass through their doors. We went and listened to a Grammy winner and she was fabulous! There is a ticket price per show. There is also a membership price. The membership price varies from $25 to $450 depending on how much you want to save. I would recommend anyone go here at least once for the experience. Just remember: NO TALKING WHILE THE ARTISTS ARE ON STAGE!

Last night was my 3rd visit to The Yardbid Suite. I had…read moreforgotten that they they only take cash at the bar. The closest ATM is across the street at Steel Wheels. Buy your tickets online. You must come at least 30 minutes before the performance. We barely got a place to sit. We shared a guy's table after his 2 companions could not buy tickets at the box office because it was a sold out show. It seems they got the sound system fixed since my last visit. Last night was spectacular. Al Muirhead, Tommy Banks and P.J.Perry. Watch the masters go at it for a couple hours and you will be in awe. The volunteer staff does the best they can, but I feel like they are judging you. Deciding if you are worthy of attending their concert. They are a very dedicated bunch. It's been operating like this since 1957 when it used to be on Whyte Ave. . (Since 1984 in this current location). I used to have a membership, but the flyers for the concerts would always arrive by snail mail way too late and I'd always miss a show. The small savings that membership offers is not really worth it to me. Just check online when you are in the mood, and you'll find something great to see.

I've been to The Winspear a number of times, including getting to perform on stage with my school…read morechoir back in the day. But it had been a while since I'd seen a show there. And then I had tickets for 2 shows just a few weeks from each other. So I figured let's review The Winspear. This concert hall is fantastic in terms of acoustics. I'm sure you've seen other reviews say something similar. There aren't many bad seats, and most of the shows here are concerts so have good sound will be the most important thing imo. The space is beautiful, bathrooms are clean, lots of space in the lobby, coat check is a reasonable $2, and the line for the bar or snacks wasn't to long. The one thing that's a downside is the seating chart, or maybe better to explain it trying to find your seat. The first show I saw (Foil, Arms, & Hog: Skittish) the usher pointed to where my seat was. Sat down and 10 minutes later a man came up and said I was in his seat. No problem, got up, asked another usher where to go. I was further down on the main floor. The second show (1922 film Nosferatu with a live playing of the massive Davis concert organ) my friend and I went were we thought we should sit. We entered on the left doors and there was no usher there. But something didn't feel right so I went to the main doors to ask an usher if we were in the right spot. He pointed to where we were sitting so I went back there. A few minutes later another group of people in that section we were in realized they were in the wrong spot when other people came to their seats. And that group(the ones that had to move) said they were in the section our tickets said. Obviously we were in the wrong spot, so we moved to right seats. So that was confusing with the seats and there isn't anything, other than on the doors to mark what the sections are. The fact that two different ushers at two different shows I've been to told me to go to the wrong seats is a bit frustrating. There is an online interactive map, but I find on a phone it's hard to see and navigate. Maybe have a paper map outside by the doors, especially the ones on the left and right side if no usher is going to be there. That's my one gripe about the Winspear. Other than that both the shows were great. The Winspear is right downtown and the library parkade is nearby. There's also Churchill station nearby, so pretty accessible for transit. I've already got tickets for a third show I'm seeing in a few weeks, so I hopefully I won't get sent to the wrong seats.

The beef dip took a half hour to show up, had almost no beef in it, and was served with a side of potato chips, right out of the bag. Hope you like sour cream and onion! I asked for top shelf bourbon and got served a lousy sour mash. Sent it back just to get a song and dance from the bartender that he forgot to add bitters, that's why it's so sour. Total BS. The duelling pianos are missing keys. The only thing to recommend this place is a good big screen projection to watch the game. The Bourbon Room is on it's way out, not worth stopping by to witness it.

I've tried the pizza bread, nachos and both Cajun chicken and grilled cheese sandwiches, all of which were tasty and all of which were in the $6-9 range. The beer is cheap and cold, although I'll never forget the conversation when I first sat down: Waitress: "What'll you have to drink?" Me: "What kind of beers do you have on tap?" Waitress: "Canadian." Me: "I'll have a Canadian." Service here is very good. The ladies who have served me remember my name, and are always warm. Mary in particular is a totally amazing server, and one of my favourite waitresses in the city - I look forward to seeing her every time I go! Make no mistake though, these servers know how rough around the edges their clientele can be, and they don't take crap. I can tell. Karaoke nights are hilarious and just as unpretentious as the rest of the Hawkeye's experience. Go on a Thursday-Saturday night and find out for yourself! The pizza was surprisingly VERY yummy here! Although they don't have very many beers on tap (I think it was a total of 1), we still had a really fun night with a big group of friends here. Out waitress (I forget her name, but everyone else seemed to know her) was fantastic. She was friendly and attentive (which was very impressive given how busy the place was). I would come by again for the pizza and a beer next time I'm in the mood for a very laid-back evening.
