Silvia is the one who suggested it for grooming because she said the anxiety was unnecessary suffering for him. She expresses his anal glands, dremels his nails- he hates cutting so she only does that when needed. He needs to go every 6 to 8 weeks fir his issues. Our 6 month old Shih tzu mix puppy saw Silvia for his first ever grooming and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. She was very caring and compassionate for our inexperienced puppy and she made sure that he wouldn't hate his first experience at the groomer. We thought that our pup would come running out trembling after his first time at the groomer but he seemed so comfortable and calm when he came out...he almost seemed like he didn't want to leave. His trim looked so good and we were so happy with all of her work, patience and care. We are definitely coming back. Sylvia is an excellent groomer and great with the dogs. She truly cares about her clients, their humans, and the community. I have been taking my dogs since 2008 and have always been very pleased and grateful. Yesterday, she was able to groom my rescue Chihuahua who is a ferocious resource guarder (super jealous and possessive), trim her nails, express the glands, and enjoy her visit. She spent the afternoon there and when I picked her up she was playing nice, looked great AND all with no muzzle. We've been taking our Scottie to Sylvia at Kosita's for about four years. Unlike other places that are often scary to a dog (groomer, vet), Pepper happily runs inside when I drop her off for her spa day. I love that Kosita's is open on Saturdays. If ever we've had a post-haircut issue (scooting being the major one), Sylvia is always responsive and willing to make adjustments. Not only that, but I've only had to ask once, and from then on, that's just the way it's done. It's great that Sylvia remembers all the specific peculiarities that come with each dog she grooms. We have an anxious, what some would call high maintenance dog, and Sylvia is so good to him. I used to trim his nails myself but it was always an ordeal, with clipper or electric file. Ishi was looking too ewok-y for his own good and the last place I'd taken him didn't have an opening until a weekend I was going to be out of town. So, I searched Yelp and found Kosita's and they were able to fit us in that weekend. It's not a fancy day spa for dogs but the lady I spoke to was really nice. When I got there, she was talking to the owners of a bichon frise(?) who's fur had gotten matted. She explained why it happened and made some recommendations so I felt like she would be very thorough when it was Ishi's turn. I told her that I wanted a puppy cut but the face to be shorter and not round lke a lion. While Tintin thinks Ishi would be adorable like that, I'm not sold on the idea. He is not a cat. Ishi was ready in about 3 hours and seemed to get along with the other dogs running around in there when I came back to pick him up. He was adorable and the price was about the same as everywhere else I've taken him in the last couple of years, $55. We'll be back in 3 months when Ishi looks like a blind teddy bear again. read more

I totally agree with Daniel. I have no idea why people go to this place. Just recently our long time groomer at Bella & Daisys had to leave so we went on the search for a new place and found Kositas on Yelp and saw good reviews. So i called and made an appointment. I went and could barely find the place, mainly because of the fact its in this side of a house with only a small sign behind a big tree. Well I finally get inside only to see like 6 dogs in this small room that fit maybe 2 single beds and theres hair on the floor. I drop him off and they inform me its going to be at least 4 hours!! My old groomer at Bella & Daisys was not only well priced but also professional and timely. Kositas had no such qualities. When I finally got back to pick him up they made me wait in that little cramped room. 6 dogs just jumping and walking around as i sit in a little fold out chair, in the middle of hair clippings all while this lady is cutting some dogs nails. It was the worst atmosphere ever............ When I finally got my toy poodle back he had been basically shaved down and $60 later I found out that they had cut him in three different places.... which they have no excuse for because my old groomer never cut him and would always tell me how great he was... DO NOT GO HERE!!! there are tons of places that are clean and professional.... and not expensive... Anyone who takes their dogs here has serious issues...I have been in business my whole life .. and this kind of service is just not acceptable... ever... read more

I don't understand why this place has such great reviews so I'll share my side of the story: I have been here on two separate occasions. First time, they did a good job on my dog and I was satisfied. I thought it was a bit pricey, $60 for a Westie when I've definitely paid $50 and under for such a small dog. However I was really dissatisfied with the hygiene and aesthetics of the place. It smells nasty and there was always poop and other things on the floor. But when it came down to it, I just wanted a good groom. Since I was happy with the cut, I decided to go again, but this time they completely messed up her cut and tried to blame it on my dog saying she moves around too much. It wasn't like a minor mess up either. It was a completely shaved strip from her head to her tail where it should be blended. I was really irritated because for one thing, that has never been a complaint and that wasn't a problem last time. Additionally, its a animal. What do you expect? You should be a trained professional and be able to work in those circumstances. Also, it should have not been cut at that length in the first place. I was ultimately irritated that she was trying to make me pay full price, and priced it higher at $65. I shouldn't have to pay full price if i'm dissatisfied. Also, she kept referring to my dog as a "He". If you groomed HER, wouldn't you know my dog is a SHE? Anyways, I'm never going here again. It's dirty anyways, but maybe if you want your dog playing in feces and getting a bad overpriced cut at that, then sure, this is the place for you. read more

Thanks Yelpers! I'm on the wrong side of Bernal Hill, but Kosita's sounded like the place to take my new adopted dog, half whippet, half collie and all stinky dandruffy itch girl. I'd thought about just taking her to Pet Food Express, which is a good deal with the good sinks and shampoos and cleaning up after you for only $15, but really: $15 more, $30 all day (and I tipped $10 because I'm not a total tightwad) buys: 1) Someone else does the shampoo. This is good when it turns out your dog never seems to have faced water before, and that person is Sylvia, who's very gentle and patient with scaredy dogs, and eases her into it. 2) Sylvia picks the right products for the job. My pooch was dry and flaky. Sylvia used a soothing shampoo and recommended fish oils and good food (she approved of the one I've started feeding her). 3) Sylvia blow-dries her. Again very helpful if your dog thinks the blow dryer is the vacuum cleaner's scary little brother. (Before we go back I'll work on desensitizing my pooch to my blow dryer though.) 4) Sylvia makes her stinky ears clean as a whistle inside. 5) Sylvia checks her nails and trims as necessary. 6) (A BIG ONE) Sylvia expresses her anal glands. You don't even need to be there to smell it. Woo-hoo! 7) To top it all off, your dog gets to hang out in the homey little living room/waiting room with other dog clients and friends, for hours if it takes that long for you to get back. How much would you spend for doggy day care? My pooch is new from rescue and a little separation anxy (she destroyed my blinds when I left for a couple of hours before I'd had a chance to crate train her, looking for me), but despite the freaky newness of the bathing experience, she ended up having a nice time because this is just a very nice place. --Of course, after we walked home back over Bernal Hill, what with wet grass and dirt paths we had four dirty feet (six including mine) when we walked in the door! But a quick paw rinse in an inch of water in the tub and she looked nearly as good as Sylvia had made her. Don't hesitate. Only people who insist on frou-frou won't like this place. read more

My two Pekingese dogs get a little overexcited around new people, so I was initially a little concerned when making arrangements for a grooming session. I arrived early in the morning at my appointed time and met a couple of other dogs along the way. We all waited outside for about twenty minutes before Sylvia arrived. She had been running late that day, which made us all wonder if we had the right time. When she arrived, she let us all in and discussed with each owner what we wanted for our pets. Her prices are pretty standard for dog groomers. She said she would try to leave as much fur as possible for my boys, but because they have such long hair, much of it tangled (they play-bite each other all the time), it might be somewhat challenging. That was all I could ask for, so I crossed my fingers and left my little guys in her care. When I arrived to pick them up, they looked so different, in a good way. Sylvia had to shave them down because of the tangles, but she left their tails with longer hair so it looked like they had little pony tails wagging whenever they got excited. It turned out much cuter than I had expected and I was very happy with it. I didn't care for the scent of the shampoo she used, so maybe next time I'll bring my own. They had been roaming freely about the "house" among the other dogs when I arrived to pick them up. They were excited to see me, but I could tell they weren't scared. I think they rather enjoyed the company of the other dogs and the freedom of exploring the new environment. It was a good experience for us all. read more

I am not a fan of the location of the shop, since parking is a bit difficult but that can't be held against this establishment. I always have great experiences here. Sylvia is wonderful and she has a lot of experience. Oscar gets his nails cut every other week and he's gotten more and more comfortable with her. Its 10$, takes 10 minutes (mostly because I want to hang out with all the dogs after its done), and it is the most stress free grooming environment that I've ever taken my dog to. Anyway, to the people leaving negative reviews: your pet doesn't really care what they look like...YOU DO. Stop being so uptight and be happy that your dog was tended to and not ignored. Every time I go in there each pup is having a blast and they LOVE and listen to her. ALSO: you should walk your dog before he/she goes to the groomer. And if your dog poops inside: shame on you, that's a sign of bad parenting. Plus, outside of the dog world business owners are allowed to refuse service to whoever...especially if they poop in their place of business. read more

The last groomer that clipped this dog had to use a muzzle and finally I told them to stop, because it was too upsetting for the dog. But Sylvia got little Jacques looking FABULOUS... no muzzle, just her usual even tempered way of working with animals. She really DOES have the touch, in addition to the other great stuff she does! After my yorkiepoo Mokka was stripped of his puppyhood with a horrible helmet-head-haircut from Petsmart, I consulted Yelp for a reputable groomer. In comes Sylvia from Kosita **cue celebration music** She squeezed us in for a saturday appointment and I was apprehensive dropping him off, not knowing how he's gonna look like when I pick him up later, but Sylvia reassured us that she will try her best to make him adorable again. A few hours later, Mokka was back in my arms, wagging his tail happily and looking like his cute self again. Kosita's is in my neighborhood and Sylvia has always done an excellent job with my Bichon Frise, who inevitably shows up there WAY past his grooming time. They are gentle with him, friendly, and always have him done on time and call me when he is finished. Sylvia even agreed to stay late one evening so I could pick him up after a work meeting. My dog has gotten notoriously bad hair cuts at many "chain" places and I was tired of him coming back from groomers seeming a little "out of it" or upset or stressed. In my search for a new groomer, I found all the great reviews about Kosita's and decided to check them out. When I called to schedule the appointment with Sylvia, I mentioned that my dog wasn't very socialized and that he gets a little shy and weird around other dogs. So, she suggested that he come in for her first appointment of the day. The shop is very small and not much to look at, but after meeting Sylvia and seeing her interaction with my dog, I felt very comfortable. Shortly after dropping him off, we ran into Sylvia down the street at Progressive Grounds. She made it a point to let me know that he was doing well and actually socializing with two other small dogs that were dropped off at the same as our appointment. She also mentioned a few small dog groups in the area that might help my dog with his social skills, which I thought was very nice. Overall, Sylvia did a great job and totally took her time. My dog came out of his appointment looking adorable, but even more importantly, he was happy and had energy. I even got to watch the last little bit of his grooming since we had arrived to pick him up before he was done. Watching Sylvia's interaction with my dog meant a lot: not only does she have nothing to hide, but you can see that she truly loves animals and what she does. Her pricing is also very reasonable, considering the quality of work that she does and the time she puts into the "client." This is the first hair cut in a LONG time that my dog has received compliments on. He is no longer embarrassed and we definitely plan to go back to Kosita's when it's time for another grooming session. read more

If you are looking for a groomer who truly unpretentiously loves dogs, call Sylvia. If you are looking for a fancy grooming salon for designer dogs with designer collars and carrying bags, this may not be the place for you. Sylvia was recommended by my neighbor - we both have dogs from rescue groups (don't quite believe in buying since there are so many homeless animals out there). Not only her grooming salon working a lot with local rescue group being a big plus, but also Sylvia loves dogs and is very good with them. She's like a earthy mother of all canine. She is fun to talk to, and she lets me spend time at her salon talking and petting other clients' dogs. Today was my very first visit, yet I felt like I've been going there for years. Wow. Sylvia rocks. It was my first (and way overdue) time to bring in Newton. He is a very very very fluffy 9 month old pom puppy. I brush him every other day thinking I was doing a great job. I told her to keep his fur and just trim his shape. She looked at his fur and said it was close to matting all over. anyhow...she was super gentle with him...giving him breaks here and there. It took 6 hrs but it was completely understandable and worth it!! I haven't felt his fur so soft and look so shiny in a long time. He knew it too. He was wagging his tail all over the place. I LOVE Sylvia! And my little Josie does too. Josie is a little ball of challenging fur that Sylvia and her crew never have a problem cleaning up. When I come to pick her up, it looks as if she was shot out of a perfect dog-making machine. Fluffy, clean, and happy. Dogs roam freely at Kosita's chilin' and mingling--no crappy cages! I love that. Also, you'll get to know the house dogs like Danny, a little Pom that you'd swear was a robot. Anyhoo, the price is very fair. The quality is TOP. While I cannot take my nasty canines here because they would try and kill the other patrons, I have seen Silvia's handiwork. She will even put a doggy bow or ribbon on your lap dog's head. She is also the only one who can trim Ringo's toenails (not an easy feat on a greased pig, er, french bulldog). And he has to come in under the cloak of darkness..... Lastly, Silvia and Jane support Rocket Dog rescue in so many ways (they will foster the old and crippled and incontinent dogs), but one of the most awesome things is that they are the official hairdressers for our dogs every year in the LGBT pride parade! read more
