I've been going here since the 70's and the quality just never changes. I consider this place to set the standard for hospitality in Vermont. Well appointed comfortable rooms, food is always amazing. Our past stay my wife who has MS had a setback as we arrived. The compassion and helpfulness of the night staff Alex that night just brings me to tears. Then He slid a note under our door before leaving to say the morning staff would fetch our breakfast from the Dorset Bakery (also phenomenal ) and bring it to our room. Which they did. We stayed here for 4 nights in the last week of October. We booked the Myrick Suite, which is on the first floor and the last room in the hallway. Our stay was perfect. From arrival and check-in, daily breakfast (included in room rate), room comfort, inn location, etc, everything was fantastic! Upon arrival, Bruce was very friendly and welcoming. He gave us a short tour of the Inn and helped us with our luggage to the room. The Myrick is fantastic, being a suite it included a living room with fireplace and tv, large bathroom with jacuzzi tub and walk-in shower and heated marble floors, the bedroom included a comfy king size bed, full dresser, two nightstands, closet, and tv. We ate breakfast daily at the inn. The servers were accurate with the orders and food delicious; I recommend the pancakes and corned beef hash. We also ate dinner one night at the inn, the food was great as was our server. I had the seared duck. Prior to dinner we sat in the bar for drinks and appetizers. Tom the bar tender was friendly and made some great cocktails. The area around the inn is very quiet and nice. Being only 6 miles from Manchester you're near shopping and restaurants but not in the middle of everything. I would said the Dorset Inn overall is one of the best hotel experiences I've ever had. Stayed in the Myrick suite for 2 nights to attend a wedding down the road in the Old Gray Barn. Originally built in 1796, this Inn and bed and breakfast was in immaculate condition, beautiful with an engaging and friendly staff. Our suite was huge with a fireplace, separate master bedroom, and a bathroom with shower stall plus tub with jets. Mattress was thick, plush and dream like. The TV's had multiple input links and choices of Pluto, DirectTV, Netflix, etc. Free Coffee was available 24/7 with a Keurig machine in public area. The restaurant and bar provided daily 5 star breakfast, we hope to dine for dinner in the future. This Inn was the perfect choice to stay for the weekend and only 10 minutes from downtown Manchester Vermont. We would stay here again. read more

The hotel is lovely. Very nice people at the desk and we stayed in a lovely room. It had a little electric fireplace that was lovely.. and very often these types of fireplaces aren't. It had a long narrow hallway separating the bedroom from the living space and a nicely appointed bathroom. The older architecture is fabulous. There is only one thing that could be better that would make this is 5 star for us and that is the dining. While the dining room is lovely aesthetically, the sourcing of the food is not good. We found this throughout Vermont I have to say so it is not just the Dorset Inn but experience has taught me that when you are paying $500 a night (we tech paid $450) you tend to end up with restaurants who have sourced their food well. With all the lovey farms in Vermont it was surprising to me that there was not a single grass fed item, wild fish or organic vegetables. So, we opted not to partake in the restaurant. Other than that though the spaces inside and out to hang were beautiful and well kept. The charm of the age of the building is intact. We would totally stay here again and if they updated their menu to reflect ethical sourcing we would eat there too! read more

We visited the Dorset Inn, a wonderful New England country restaurant nestled on the main floor of an old Vermont mansion, while on a ski vacation in Manchester. I was a bit worried that it would be stuffy and pretentious, but was pleasantly surprised by the casual and congenial atmosphere (and dazzled by the sight of the front door lamp glowing in the drifts of snow). In addition to the main dining room, with its muted lighting and heavy linen tablecloths, there is a charming dark wood-paneled tavern, and it effortlessly evokes the downstairs of an intimate British pub (while serving Grey Goose martinis) with its lightly scarred wooden tables and chairs. We lingered with our drinks here while waiting to be seated, enjoying a quiet conversation with the bartender. And the food. The restaurant offers a wonderful mix of traditional and new American dishes, including beef, lamb, and duck (the summer menu is lighter), always prepared with seasonal and regional ingredients. Though we arrived a bit later in the evening, our meal was not rushed and our dishes (beef for both of us) were thoughtfully prepared. I was pleased that the menu included true (and tasty) vegetarian dishes (not just a collection of sides), as many of my dining companions are vegetarian. I would, however, recommend skipping the desserts. Neither chocolate nor fresh apples could save them. Recommended. read more

Scoring an inn deal on groupon, we really didn't know what to expect. When we arrived we love the feel and look of the inn and the small town it is located. Hotel staff was excellent and we were shown right to our room. Cozy but not too small of rooms, perfect for those who are out and about during their stay. Hotel got very warm at night but that was very fixable by cracking a window. Breakfast is included in room rate and exceeded expectations. Very delicious and filling. Not much happening around Dorset but we had a blast exploring most of the state! We would definitely visit again. read more

This is the best bed & breakfast experience I've ever had. First, the inn is large enough that you don't need to make small talk at breakfast with strangers you don't necessary feel the need to get to know. Second, the inn was impeccably decorated to simulate the feeling of being in an old home. Many of the decorations evoke the feeling of the 18th & early 19th century, when the inn was founded. It is cozy, welcoming and completely charming. The room rate includes breakfast. Additionally, the inn provides an afternoon snack (they served us apple cider) and had freshly made desserts. After grabbing our hot apple cider we sat down to a good ol' fashioned game of checkers. Now to the food: Breakfast -the menu includes stuffed french toast (and Vermont syrup), pancakes (and Vermont syrup), omelets, eggs benedict, and fresh Vermont greek-styled yogurt with fresh granola and fruit. Most meals are served with toast. We tried the cinnamon raisin, rye and whole wheat - all were clearly fresh baked artisan breads. Dinner - great service, varied menu, awesome atmosphere. I had the greens salad and quinoa cakes over lentil stew. My salad was full of fresh vegetables - not old, tired, potential unfrozen veggies. My quinoa cakes and lentil stew was full of delicious Indian spices. My husband had a stuffed portobello mushroom. Absolutely the best vegetarian meal I've ever had. My last note: on our last night in the area, we moved down the street to a big fancy Starwood hotel. It had some of the old school charm, because of the facade but inside this was just your standard hotel. It came nowhere near the comfort of the Dorset Inn and I was thankful I was only spending one night there. If you're making a visit to this part of Vermont, you'd be a fool not to stay at the Dorset Inn. read more

This Inn is the most charming Inn in story book Vermont! The town itself is tiny and perfect! My husband & I stay every year for the past 5 years the night before Christmas Eve. It's a mini getaway! When we arrive we get a eggnog from the amazing general store across the street - settle in to the bar and have one of the most amazing meals anywhere in the Tavern - we eat around the world and we love the restaurant - it's 5 star! And the Inn is so charming. So special. We bring our dogs- Charlie & Wink to dog friendly room 28 which couldn't be any lovelier! Dining in the Tavern in front of the fire on a chilly night- delightful! Noonie is a dynamo-wonder-server. She expertly maneuvers a packed Tavern by herself, and is always cheerful. The menu has recently changed, and is truly appealing. There is always a fish special with some kind of wonderful preparation. Patrick makes excellent, strong drinks with a smile. I have to say, that with all the delectable choices, you can also get the BEST burger anywhere within a 50 mile radius.Superb grilled flavor and quality Angus beef, served with Bourbon ketchup , Home made hand cut fries and onion rings. Was here for breakfast because Manchester is usually a zoo during the weekend. When we asked for a table for 6, they gave me a total attitude about not being able to put all of us together. After trying to find another place, we insisted on sitting together and they finally put two round tables to sit all of us together. Strange.. The food. Not very good. Dry pancakes, slow, and overpriced. It's a charming place and all but they need to lose the attitude and server better food. read more

This place is unbelievable. Hotel, staff and food were absolutely exceptional. I'm a sucker for historical places. The Dorset Inn is the oldest operating Inn in Vermont. It's charming, with it's remarkable decorations that resemble centuries ago. It's warm. The room that I stayed in had a fireplace and a flat screen television. The square footage was roughly 1000 square feet; plenty of room to accommodate several people (we had guests come from Queensbury for supper and hosted them prior). Our room had modern luxuries that is a rare find in old world hotels. The food. Wow! Dinner and breakfast were superb; our entire dinner party was pleased. Breakfast was awesome and complimentary. Try the french toast! The coffee was surprisingly amazing! The staff was world class. Very attentive to myself and my girlfriend. At arrival, we were given a tour of the Inn. The entire staff was extremely helpful with any need we had. HIGHLY recommend. This is a hidden gem. I will surely be coming back here in the spring, summer and fall..and of course next winter. This is a lovely inn.Having said that , the ambiance provides a wonderful setting for a wonderful restaurant. We have eaten here five times this Summer, in the main dining room, the tavern and the Patio.It makes no difference . The food is simply first class , ample portions and fairly priced. Only thing I'd like to see is an expanded wine by the glass menu. On our last visit we brought a friend who formerly was the food critic for McCalls Magazine . We are repeat visitors to the Dorset Inn because the place is awesome! The warm welcome and spectacular and comfortable accommodations, the 5 -star cuisine and neighboring offerings are so worth it. The fact that we can stay as a family of 4 in the same room without being cramped is the unicorn on top. Perfectly historic and modern at the same time (no historical bathrooms!). Once again, I have been blown away by a fabulous dining experience at The Dorset Inn! From the Gold Rush bourbon cocktail to the carrot cake dessert, I felt like a spoiled special guest. I ordered the Prince Edward Island Mussels appetizer, which was was superb; great flavors! I followed that up with the salmon special; it was flavorful and done to perfection! I watched another table's reaction (amazement! Many photos were taken) to a double decker burger; dubbed the Big Mac! It was a work of art and turned heads when delivered to the table; it was stacked to about 7" tall. I have to say that I have always felt like a guest of honor at the Dorset Inn. I haven't stayed in many B&B's, but if they're all like this one, than I'm going to do more! The building was clean, quaint, historical, and overall lovely. With such an old building, you might expect it to be in disrepair, but it has been kept up and remodeled while keeping the charm and history. Our room was perfect, big cozy bed, the hall was quiet, and the staff was incredibly friendly. I was able to get recommendations for a nearby hike and wineries before I even flew out to VT weeks in advance! I also somehow lost my room key within 30 minutes of checking in, and the front desk happily gave me a new one without making me feel bad. The food was delicious... a bit pricey, but not bad compared to Seattle food prices (where I'm from)... and worth it for the quality. My sweetie was mad in love the filet mignon- I've never seen a food bliss face quite like that one! I had a swordfish special, and was also pretty in love. Breakfast was great, too, (although I was hoping for an eggs benedict like the website implied). But great local ingredients, dark coffee, sweet butter, and maple syrup... yum! It was quite affordable with the deal I bought. I would recommend it to people I know in a heart beat who are looking for a quiet, clean, historical getaway. read more

I have stayed at multiple properties by the same owners. I have found the staff to be extremely accomodating. The Dorset Inn is very charming with beautiful gardens. The town itself is SO adorable. Across the street there is a general store that you could find your VT souvenirs and whatever you need. The bartender was so gracious and accommodating. I love the way it is decorated too! read more

Delightful spot for an upscale dinner in an otherwise low key Vermont. Service was slow and lacking, but that is par for the course in this area and since our food was delicious, won't deduct any points for this. Would definitely go back. Oh, did I mention the dessert? Good luck, so many to choose from and they all sounded incredible. Man at next table said he'd like to order a slice of German chocolate cake with a scoop of tapioca and a scoop of rice pudding! My husband and I have just returned from Vermont, where we spent two wonderful nights at the Dorset Inn for our Anniversary. It was our second stay there, and, if anything, it was even better than the first. The staff couldn't have been more helpful or courteous. The room was charming and nicely decorated. And the food -- I can't rave enough about the food. We had dinner in the dining room the first evening and it was a delicious as could be (the second evening, we had tickets for the Weston Playhouse and preferred to dine closer to the show). Breakfast offered a varied menu -- my husband said it was the best Eggs Benedict he had ever had, and my French Toast was unique, but nonetheless delicious. I should also mention that the decor of the Inn appears to be authentically Colonial with many antiques, and the gardens are beautiful. I am looking forward to a return visit. read more

Nothing to write home about. After 2 good lunches and one expensive and disappointing dinner here, I can say I've given it a fair shake and am disappointed. The guy who greeted us at the front desk was the best thing about our three visits to the Dorset Inn -- friendly, welcoming, and kind, he's the best of the best for Vermont innkeepers (only sorry I didn't get his name!) Aside from him, we had very curt service from our waitstaff (in some cases, nasty service!). We also had extremely mediocre food at top-notch-food prices. Our scallops tasted less than fresh and the risotto was a bit rubbery. I will say, however, that the beet salad was great, and I loved my bread pudding dessert. If you need a nice dinner at an Inn in Dorset which accommodates children, this is a good spot -- kids menu for $7 & coloring pages. and it's one of the only (the one and only?) spots in Dorset for lunch. If you want a memorable dinner you'll talk about for days, I suggest you look elsewhere. In our opinion, the West View Farm was outstanding. (try the scallops there!) read more

Escaping the city for a fall foliage weekend I came to The Dorset Inn one night for dinner with my parents and absolutely loved it. Delicious food served on the ground floor of a old home from the 18th century, this place just oozes in quaintness. I did not stay at the Inn...although it looks very New England quaint. We had dinner was "heavenly matched" per my husband. Calfs liver was excellent...per my BIL. We truly enjoyed our dinner. I had made an appointment (last minute) to the Petite Spa for a facial. The desk clerk tracked the technician down to confirm the appointment. I called at 11 and she scheduled for 2 ...now that's service. The tech, Philippa, was magical...the only adjective I could come up with to describe the experience. Visited the Dorset Inn for a group meeting. I had a rather late arrival and felt very welcomed by a letter with my room key in the outside mailbox. They'd even left the light on for me in my room. The service was wonderful, food was excellent (included with the room rate), and even the little things were handled royally. Some of our group had a late evening getting back to the inn, and although the restaurant was closed, they were served soup and salad in the backyard. I love that wifi is free and so is access to a computer and printer -- take note chain hotels, no need to charge $1 per page to print boarding passes or $13 per day for Internet access. Rooms were nice. I've never stayed in an historic inn like this, but definitely will again! read more

Had the opportunity to visit the Dorset Inn while on a property search trip last weekend. We met the owner who graciously gave us a tour of the facility. All I can say is WOW! This place is fantastic and 1000 times better that the place we stayed (wish I had known about the Dorset Inn before booking at that other poorly run place). Had drinks and dinner in the restaurant with our real estate agent and a chef friend. The food was excellent, wonderful flavors and selection with impeccable service. Just stayed at the Dorsett with my family and we all had a great time. We wish we would have stayed a few more days. The front desk staff of Kathy, Steve and Christine were so warm and friendly not to mention great with my son. My son loved playing with the games around the fireplace and even made some friends. We were given a bigger room to accomodate our two pack and plays for the kids and it was great although a bit warm. It had a nice flat screen tv, although we didn't watch it, and a clean updated feel for such an old hotel. We also enjoyed the complimentary breakfast. The pancakes and frech toast were great. We just wish we ate dinner there, next time. I can't say enough good things about the Dorset Inn and can't wait to visit again. read more

The beautifully appointed rooms in this inn made all our stays here feel like very special vacations even though we were up for business. The building itself has that unique quality of an older, some would say "antique" establishment, but the room and bath renovations and luxury accommodations really bring the service up to modern expectations. Had lunch at The Dorset Inn recently while staying there. My wife and I split an excellent ham and cheese sandwich with great hand-cut fries. But, we got charged $6 for a split charge on the sandwich. Ridiculous! I don't like, but understand the charge to split an entre, but for a sandwich ?? read more

Horrible Service from the Moment we stepped in the Door, Forgettable & Basic Food: Went for dinner and received some of the worst service I have ever experienced. First, having dinner at 7pm, they were already sold out of one of their main classic dishes - the beef pot roast. What kind of place sells out of a staple item at 7pm on a Saturday night. Next, after a pair of sub par soup appetizers were taken away, dinner did not arrive for another 40 minutes. During this time, my water glass remained empty and I received a seltzer water instead of a ginger ale refill. Upon getting our dinners finally, I asked for a fresh ginger ale and did not get a new one for 20 minutes and they brought out a can to accompany the glass to "prove" it was really ginger ale. The dinners were forgettable and on the greasy side, the mashed potatoes were cold and the spinach was an oily mess. After I had asked for the fresh ginger ale our waiter ignored us and never brought out desert menus. We left feeling very unwelcome as the entire staff avoided us on the way out without a single goodbye or thank you - all for just asking for a new ginger ale. Totally out of line and unforgivable. Don't trust the reputation, the Dorset Inn has lost its charm read more

ok one year later! so we planned our stay at the VSF horse show such that our first night was here, and then rented a house for a week (cost would really add up to stay with a family and pets at such a nice hotel for 8 or more days!). totally great welcoming experience! again the room was spotless, the front desk staff lovely (I wish I could recall their names!), and this time we enjoyed a relaxing dinner (yum!) and their fab breakfast the next day, as it was tuesday so we didn't have any classes that day. all in all, fabulous! will be back for sure!!!!! read more
