Finally had the chance to stop by the long awaited, The Duchess, Tony Foreman's newest venture located in the former Cafe Hon location. I know a lot of people had a bit of a conniption when that giant flamingo was taken down since it felt like a little piece of Baltimore history was being left behind but, I would argue that new local lore is being created at The Duchess. The place is absolutely stunning with two different sides, a barside and a dining room, and plenty of seating. The bar area features booths, a large dining table right at the front, and beautiful bar seating. The dining area features a huge communal table which can easily be converted for large groups along with many four tops and two tops and even a stage for live music. The staff seem very well trained (which is the Tony Foreman way, after all), each of them incredibly knowledgeable on the cocktail, wine, and food menus. The cocktail list is creative and the wines encompass a huge geographical radius. My boyfriend got the queen of hearts (if I'm remembering correctly) which is their play on a mai thai - he loved it, which is saying a lot since he's very picky about his cocktails. I got the parachute girl which was described as a "mango sticky rice" cocktail. I didn't get any real mango flavor from it at all and thought it would've been better suited as a rum based cocktail instead of infused gin. It noted "toasted sticky rice" in the description but that was lost for me as well. Maybe it's just not my kinda drink and I need to explore more from the menu? We didn't try any food this time around since our plan was to scope out the menu first to see how gluten free friendly it was. Soy sauce can be a bit of a challenge to overcome for me with some Asian/Pacific Islander cuisine. Much to my delight, I learned that most of the dishes use tamari, gluten free soy sauce. The bartender said when we come back for food to double check with the server since some marinades do contain soy sauce but there's still a ton of things I could enjoy thanks to the use of tamari. Tasty Asian fusion! We visited The Duchess on a Sunday evening, and it was about a quarter full. The interior is styled like an English pub, and the televisions showed different natural scenes during our visit. I tried the smokey wahine to drink, the typhoon fries as a starter, and the gochujang tteokbokki as a main. The food arrived at the same time and before our drinks. The cocktail had a good balance of flavors. The typhoon fries were solid and had a scrumptious sauce, but there wasn't much sauce on the dish. The tteokbokki was delicious with a delicious sauce and perfectly cooked noodles. Overall, I had a good experience at The Duchess and would recommend them for dinner in Baltimore. read more

An old coworker and I hadn't seen each other in forever and neither of us had tried The Duchess. The Duchess is the newest restaurant from my favorite Baltimore Restaurant Group, Foreman Wolfe and they have hit another one out of the park. It is billed as an English Pub with an Asian flair. The inside was beautiful in an upscale English pub way. Warm rustic furniture and we were encouraged to take a look around and notice the design details. This space was the old Cafe Hon and I can't even picture that in the place now. Now the food. Most of the menu is a section called Snacks that are meant sharing. The tuna nachos were a special and so good. I can't begin to understand how they fried those chips. I really loved the shrimp and corn patties. They were both light and full of that is possible. We jumped into some pork snacks and got another round of drinks and Typhoon Fries instead of desert. I have a video of the fries that couldn't load in this review but the toppings move. You just have to get it. The waiter tired to explain it and we didn't understand until we saw it. Next time I will try out the More than a Snack section. A couple friends and I tried The Duchess for brunch this weekend - wow! What a great new addition to Baltimore's food scene - 4.5 stars. The ambiance was perfect for a cozy fall morning. The dining room has a sort of Victorian feel from all the dark wood and vintage touches. There is also a sports bar section with TVs that feels like more of a traditional tavern - although also nice, we appreciated that it was in a separate room to maintain a quieter vibe in the dining room. We ordered a few dishes to share so we could each try multiple menu items, and were all impressed by the unique and complex flavors. The standout items were the ube pancakes and the togarashi karaage and waffle. The pancakes were so fluffy and moist, with just the right amount of sweetness. I loved the balance of sweet and savory in the chicken and waffles, and all of the textures were so on point. We also ordered the pork lumpia, pancit bihon gollai, and each had a P.O.G. (passionfruit, orange, and guava refresher) - all were delicious. Just a few minor complaints: The drip coffee I ordered came in a tiny mug that was only about half full, so I assumed refills must be included. When I asked for more coffee, they refilled the mug (slightly more generously than the first time), then I was disappointed to see that our bill included charges for 2 separate orders of coffee. The size of the P.O.G. drink was also a bit disappointing. For $9, I expected more juice and less ice. Upon taking our order, our server offered to help us understand the menu, since he pointed out that many of the ingredients are pretty "foreign." His comment came off as insensitive/slightly prejudiced, especially considering both friends I was dining with were visibly of Asian descent. He was quite young (and slightly awkward) so I'm sure he didn't mean to be offensive, but I think the restaurant would benefit from requiring its staff to complete some sort of cultural competency training to avoid offending patrons. Ive stopped in the duchess a few times for drinks and food and every time Ive been pleased. Im always welcomed warmly by staff, greeted and seated right away. The vibes of the place are cozy, just the way I like it and the menu is inventive without being weird. They have fun cocktails on menu but can still make classic cocktails with no issue. The food, omg the food!! I recommend trying the buns and the crispy chicken sando, you will not be dissapointed! read more

My mom and I decided to try The Duchess for dinner last minute this past week and we're so glad we did! We truly had the best experience. We came on a weeknight so easily found street parking right by the restaurant but they have complimentary valet parking available which is a must for weekends. The inside is so cute and cozy with really fun furniture. The service from the manager to our waiter was excellent. The menu is so large and unique we had a tough time making decisions! We really enjoyed the aloha cooler, short rib, beet salad, and tteokbokki, as well as the chocolate pudding for dessert! We already can't wait to come back and try more of the dinner and brunch menus! read more

I had an absolutely lovely meal at The Duchess! The menu was a lot of small dishes, note some of them are extremely small, but the variety allowed us to try a bunch of things! All of them were unique and delicious. The cocktail menu was interesting and I was a bit skeptical about the mixes but all of the cocktails were balanced and flavorful. Towards the end of the Friday evening there was a live band and it created the perfect ambiance for post-meal drinks and snacks. I would highly recommend even if you couldn't get a reservation for dinner! I will note that because the restaurant is really popular right now we got put in a booth that was clearly made for 2 but we squeezed in as a party of 4. There was another party of 6 behind us and they had clearly squeezed in as well. I am sure this will improve over time but just be ready! read more

When I booked the dinner reservation for Valentine's Day about a month out, I did not know what exactly to expect. An English styled pub with Chamorro food. I really had never had that cuisine before but a look at the menu showed plenty of vegetarian options as well as non pork options with some seafood offerings. They offer valet parking but we found parking a couple of blocks away luckily. Hampden on a Friday night around 8.. I consider ourselves lucky lol. The interiors were inviting but nothing about it screamed pub to me. I think the pub aspect is mostly only in play when they are mentioning that they air footie games at the bar, and there is that vibe around the bar area maybe? I guess also to be fair we were there for Valentine's dinner, so no pub vibes there that night. They did have a pre fixe Valentine's menu but considering 2 of the items on the menu were dietary restrictions for me and they could not do substitutions we went a la carte. We got the shrimp and corn patties, the Brussels sprouts, the da kine pickles,ginger soy beets, pancit bihon noodles, and a main of rockfish sinigang to share. Between the two of us we liked most everything. The one or two things I did not like my bf did, and vice versa. My favorites were the roasted beets with the tofu cream , Brussels sprouts with the miso soy glaze and the shrimp and corn fritter patties. My bf really liked the pancit noodles and beets as well. He did not like the broth of the sinigang soup whilst I enjoyed it. My chocolate namkala dessert was lovely too, very light chocolate pot de crème, with chantilly cream and sesame brittle. I do wish the menu had more meat options that were non pork. There was one chicken bbq skewer and then the duck donburi. And only the beef skewer as well. There are no mains that were vegetarian either. Just feedback for the group. Our server Liam did a good job looking after us. There happened to be live music as well which was nice and vibey with the Valentines dinner theme. They have live bands every Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, which is nice to provide exposure to local bands. Would absolutely come back for dinner or brunch. Where do I even start to begin to describe this food experience?! I'm still trying to find the words and all I have to say is truly one of a kind! Leave it to Tony Forman to provide an amazing culinary experience ! From the moment you walk in you feel like you have been transported an elevated pub in England! The decor -10, the bar-10 and the food -10! I would recommend making reservations as this is definitely a new hot spot that everyone is trying to experience! We had little to no wait for our table which was awesome. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The only reason that I didn't give this five stars is I do think our server could have paid closer attention to our food allergies than he did. On several occasions we had to say this has nuts in it etc even after saying we were allergic. Other than that everything else was a 10 even with mistakes! The menu is so creative and like nothing I have ever had before! Packed with flavor this is a menu that is simply indescribable! I have visited The Duchess twice now (once for drinks and Brussels, once for a full meal) and have been thrilled both times. The cocktails are creative and flavorful, and the ambiance is great. Staff are plentiful and attentive throughout your visit. On my most recent visit, I shared several small plates as well as the Wagyu steak. The corn chowder was perfect for a cold day, and had plenty of complexity. The tempura vegetables were tasty and not too heavy, and the sauce that came with them complimented them nicely. The star of the show though was the Wagyu steak, which we ordered medium rare and came just so. It was served with an incredible butter (they did something to it but I can't recall what), and some excellent sweet potato. I'd come back for that alone, but we closed out the meal with dessert, and the chocolate namalaka had the perfect balance of sweetness, chocolate, and crunchiness. I couldn't believe my eyes when I walked into this restaurant. WOW. Absolutely stunning. It feels rustic in the well loved way. So cozy and comforting, like going to grandmas if she lived in an English farm house and had impeccable taste. And if grandma made sure her house was handicapped accessible! No steps to get into the restaurant. Our waiter, Liam, was so attentive and kind! He paced our brunch courses out so well and kept it flowing amazingly. The cocktails and cocktails were so delicious. Everything had a really pleasant zip to it. I can't get over how beautiful everything was. And everyone absolutely loved their food. I got tofu and spam dishes, things people tend to hate. I wish I could give this place 4.5 stars because it really has almost everything we wanted and we will be back, but it didn't quite reach the level of "I need to get back here as soon as possible." We had a 630pm reservation and by the time we got there things were already busy, but that made for a warm and cozy atmosphere on a damp Friday night - good start. We were seated promptly and soon after our waiter arrived, went through the specials, etc. For our food we split the Crispy Shrimp & Corn Patties, Pork Lumpia, Typhoon Fries, Gochujang Tteokbokki, and the Grill Duck Tonbori. The shrimp & corn patties stole the show - get them; unfortunately, they outclassed the rest of the food which probably contributes to this rating. The pork lumpia was great, but we both felt the serving size was a tad small (even for tapas). Fries were also good but we screwed up by not including any add-ons - will change that next time. The duck was perfectly cooked, and yet underwhelming. I can't point to why - maybe it was just a personal preference. Gochujang Tteokbokki reminded me of one of my favorite DC plates (shoutout Roses Luxury) and I only wish it had more of that delicious duck bacon. You should go here - this place rocks - and it feels so so close to being a truly remarkable experience. We're going to keep an eye on the menu and will look to head back in a few months. read more

what a great addition to the ave! we finally made it here for date night and it really is the perfect spot for a cozy romantic dinner. the vibe is dimly lit and bustling, feels a bit like places ive been to in philly/nyc. it seemed like everyone was sipping on a spritzy type of drink. I recently went here for a weekend brunch with two friends and had a great experience! We were seated at our reservation time, prices were reasonable, and our service was outstanding throughout the brunch. I was especially appreciative that our server asked about allergies and let us know about cross-contamination risks. The ambiance is nice, feeling like an upscale pub. We shared the following dishes: Pastry sampler (hojicha chocolate chip mochi muffin, "morning glory" muffin, and miso glazed apple turnover): All were delicious, although I would choose the "morning glory" if you only want one. Ahi Tuna Poke: The tuna was extremely fresh and the chips crunchy and flavorful. However, the soy vinaigrette was very salty and took away from the dish. Pancit Bihon Gollai:A delicious, perfectly cooked dish, with everything in good proportions and tasty. Togarashi Karaage & Waffle: A great Japanese take on chicken and waffles. The chicken was well-prepared and crispy, the sauce was spicy and sweet, and the waffles were solid. Ube pancakes-These tasted fine and were good pancakes, although they needed a lot more ube flavor. I've been to the Duchess for dinner twice since they opened in December and I enjoyed both visits. At this point, I've tried at least half of the menu (most of the smaller dishes). While I didn't love all of them, I have enjoyed most. My favorites include: the garlic chili cucumber salad, the ahi tuna poke, the spam musubi, the crispy shrimp and corn patties, and the pork lumpia. Their menu definitely focuses on smaller plates and sharing, so definitely come in groups so you can share/try most of their menu! Their beverage offerings are great (varied, creative, delicious) and include everything - cocktails, mocktails, beers, seltzers, wine, and spirits. The service is also great (Tony Foreman has a great reputation for food, drinks, and service in his restaurants, and the Duchess does not disappoint on that account)! It's a great addition to the neighborhood! Hampden has restaurant options that span the spectrum from casual/fast casual to fancier/foodier, and The Duchess offers a fancier/foodier option and a larger space (a lot of Hampden restaurants are teeny tiny, so it's great to have a new restaurant that can really sit a bunch of people! I'm glad to have it in the neighborhood for sure! I have some feelings about the concept and decor, but nothing that is such a major detractor that it affected my overall experience. The restaurant has English pub vibes but serves dishes inspired by the cuisines of the Pacific (the chef is from Guam). It's a bit of a strange juxtaposition, but I do think the interior of the restaurant is beautiful. I also find some of the furniture baffling. The tables in front bar area aren't as wide as the booth seating and don't reach to the wall. I found that so strange - I've never thought much about being able to knock things off both sides of a table! The dining room furniture did bother me. Our group of 4 sat in a table with a booth on one side and backless chairs/stools on the other. We're young-ish, so I don't necessarily mind a stool while dining even at a dining height table (although they obviously won't work for everyone, like people with back issues who need the support of a chair). What did bother me is that the heights of the stools and table don't seem to work together - when you sit on the stool, your thighs are pressed right up against the underside of the table, which just wasn't very comfortable. Despite a few issues relating mostly to the furniture, I think the Duchess is a great addition to Hampden's restaurant scene. It's serving up food that we definitely didn't have in the neighborhood at any other restaurant and offers a great fine dining but in a casual, easy going, totally not fussy environment. I'm sure we'll back often - but I'm asking for a table with chairs not stools! read more

I'm writing this with sadness because you really missed the mark. The Duchess has been a favorite of mine/and my partner for a little under 2 years. We have recommended The Duchess to so many of our friends. We are city people that moved to the county and make an effort to dine here, celebrating birthdays amongst other life events. Today was so utterly disappointing I don't know if we'll be back. The menu has changed with the removal of some of our favorite items. What is still available is the Spam Masubi, we usually order 2. This was the highlight of our experience. But that is it. The service has changed and is exactly as others have described. Besides the hostess, staff exhibited little hospitality. We sat and waited 15 minutes before being addressed by the waiter because they never removed the extra plates on our table. This followed with poor cocktails that took an additional 15 minutes. We ordered our food at the same time to minimize the wait time and spent approximately 45 minutes total for our meal. With food still on plates, and in front of us, we had multiple people ask if it could be removed.. while we were still eating. You were such a reliable place for us, what happened? read more

The Duchess is so cute and cozy and vibey and is the perfect date night spot. Although it's newer, I thought the ambiance, food, and service were well thought out and well done. Dishes I loved: pork belly skewers, tuna poke, shrimp and corn patties, and spicy tteokbokki. Dishes I liked: pork lumpia (the sauce was okay and a little on the bland side). Dishes I could live without: the stir-fry lotus (kind of bland, I didn't taste the truffle, and also it was one of the more expensive dishes!). We also did a bottle of the Riesling and it was delicious. Our waiter was amazing, and there was live music, and food aside, The Duchess is such a fun spot to just hang out and chill. I wanted to love it. After years of slow death in that spot by the infamous "Cafe Hon", it was time for a better option. On the surface, The Duchess fulfills that - mismatched decor, Baltimore style, faux rustic tables and other items, loud and chaotic. But the food selection, taste and preparation falls short, and the prices buoyed higher than the humble Hampden main strip should ever dare. It ends up coming across as overpriced and attempts to be pretentious, which is a classic harbinger of imminent failure in Baltimore. Service is mediocre. Not awful, but not engaged nor particularly attentive. I mean, you can't have it both ways - playing with pretense while embracing the Baltimore disinterested ethos. But I hope they can adjust and stay. Come back to earth and create an institution! But I fear the worst, given that the Duchess is part of a restaurant "pseudo-chain". We'll see. read more

Over July 4th weekend, my family of 10 visited The Duchess for brunch, and it was an unforgettable experience. From the outside, the restaurant is unassuming, but inside it reveals a beautifully decorated space you'd expect to find in a neighborhood like Hampden. Jake welcomed us with a warm smile as the staff prepared our table--we arrived at 12pm even though our reservation was for 12:30pm, and they accommodated us without hesitation. Our server, along with every staff member who brought out dishes, was incredibly friendly and attentive. Danvic in particular went out of his way to walk my wife through all the gluten-free options, which we really appreciated. We ordered nearly the entire menu, and everything was absolutely delicious--Chamorro flavors were new to us, but a few of us were especially excited about the ube dishes. Though we knew it was a Tony Foreman restaurant, we came in with no expectations and were blown away. Wow Baltimore! You continue to amaze me. The Duchess is a very special place to me. Attending University of Hawai'i during my undergraduate years, I found it nearly impossible to enjoy the islands cuisine on the East Coast....until Duchess. The menu includes novelty's like spam and sticky rice, while incorporating papaya and other commodities (don't skip on the Da Kine pickles!) you'd eat regularly in Hawai'i. What a cute place! I finally made it here. it was cozy and charming and inviting inside. The host was kind and personable as he sat us. Our server was really lovely and informative. Our food was delicious and our drinks were as well. Our server was the perfect amount of paying attention, but still letting us enjoy our meal. The fries with the SPAM added... Genius! My friend said that she would not have typically order that but was glad she did because the spam added a nice salty, savory touch. Who knew that spam could be fancy? My wife and I had dinner at a place tonight that we truly loved. The flavors were so unusual. The textures were foreign but the tastes were incredible. The only problem is, I cannot tell you exactly what I ate. That's because the food at the Duchess is based on the culinary traditions of Guam and I am just not familiar with it. But I can promise you it is truly worth a visit. The Duchess is located on an unassuming corner on 36th street in Hamden. One positive at the outset was that it has valet parking. A real plus in that neighborhood. We walked in there at 7 pm on a Monday night and the vibe was already buzzing. It seemed like a mixture of college kids, young professionals, neighborhood regulars and some curious tourists , but everyone was having a good time. The spacious bar was packed. We were greeted by Tessa the general manager who made us feel right at home. As we waited for our table we ordered drinks from the expert bartenders and they were really good. I had a whiskey sour and my wife had a sparkling sake, which was unique and delicious. We were seated by the genial owner and host Tony Foreman, who was generous with his time and observations. When I asked him what to order he suggested that we put ourselves in the hands of the chef and that's exactly what we did. The results were stunning. Most of what we ordered were what I would call tapas--small but shareable plates. We started with a tuna poke and a super fresh salad. This was followed by unusual sautéed vegetables and rice noodles and tofu. We ordered the short rib entree, which was so moist and juicy we could cut it with a fork,and it was surrounded by a dense peanut sauce. For dessert, we had a uniquely flavored chocolate mousse, and an apple flavored ice concoction, which tasted like a frozen apple crisp. The bottom line is this place is truly great-- and fun too. The atmosphere, the cordiality and professionalism of the staff, and the wonderful food and drink combined to make a boring Monday night a wonderful experience. We will be back there soon. A weird joint. It's Very Fancy Restaurant. Except it doesn't look like one, nor is the food seemingly Super Fancy. The interior is "English Manor House" but the furniture seems ONLY purchased from the Ramada Inn 1985 Collection. The Chef is from Guam. The food is the food of Guam but made at the Very Fancy Restaurant level. Not only is this possibly a strange thing to do, it is VERY strange to serve it in this environment! Everything I ordered and ate tasted GREAT but I felt slightly ridiculous paying 31 dollars for a scoop of white rice, 2 pieces of broccolini and a small piece of (FLAWLESSLY COOKED) salmon. Do you have money? Are you bored with normal restaurants? Definitely go here and try this! Its great! But very strange...and expensive! But great! read more

Miso Beet Salad ($10) and Chili Garlic Cucumber Salad ($8) was good. Surprised the garlic chips and chili in the Cucumber Salad had no taste. You'd expect it to have the kick of freshly fried garlic, which I'd have loved. It's a bit pricey for the Cucumber Salad, considering it's about the size of a coffee cup. The Miso Beet Salad didn't have a miso flavor, but the peanut crumble on top was good. The Kimchi Fried Rice ($14) was lacking in flavor. Really it was the added kimchi on top that gave it the flavor. It was served in a bowl about the size of what you'd normally get for ramen or pho. Overall pretty pricey for the portion size and quality. Stopped at these since it is lunchtime. Would be willing to come again and try other dishes. read more
