    Just a corner bar
    Todd H.

If you're from one of the Eastern states, especially if you're from one of the larger cities, you know what a corner bar is and you probably also know what a Friday Fish Fry is as well. Western states generally have neither, most bars out here are usually a themed chain "brew pub" or part of a restaurant (or both). And Friday Fish Fries are pretty rare but fortunately they seem to be quite popular in the Phoenix region's far East Valley. I know, I've been on a mission to find them and compare them for the past 6 months or so. This week I discovered The Duchess, about as close as we get to a corner bar - a small simple place tucked away in the corner of a quiet strip mall with a plain solid wood door that just has the words "Duchess" on it. Inside there's a bar, several tables and on this Friday night a couple of dozen people just sitting around drinking beer and having fun spending the evening with each other. It's not a fancy place ... some Yelpers have called it a Hole in the Wall or a dive. That's not far off from the truth. Others have called it some less flattering things, perhaps they took a wrong turn on their way to one of those fancy Scottsdale themed "brew pubs" and ended up here by mistake. It's a bar - what bar has ever been described as "spotless"? I don't think of white table cloths and romantic candles when I think of the word bar. Anyway, we were there to eat not to drink all night. Their menu says they have a Friday Night Fish Fry special and my weekly quest has reinforced what every Easterner knows, that some of the best fish fries can be found in some of the most unpretentious corner bars. On a scale of 1 - 10 The Duchess doesn't ring the bell as a perfect 10 on every measure. They are way up there though for quantity of food for the price, for size of their fish filets, for knowing how to cook them properly, for a nice light but crunchy breading, for tasty French Fries, for friendly and welcoming service from the waitress and for laid back non-trendy atmosphere that is a nice mix of ordinary working people. Their tiny cup of coleslaw is only pretty good but I've had worse but frankly if that's the only negative thing I can say I think this place is a winner worth trying out. The price for a dinner with two large filets is about $10 and with four filets is about $12. Neither of us could eat more than two so being able to take the other two home for leftovers made it a good deal. It you aren't into showing off and being seen in a corner bar doesn't offend you I recommend The Duchess as a surprisingly good place to hang out and chow down on some good food.

Roosters Country is hands down the worst excuse for a bar I've ever set foot in. Calling it a "dive…read morebar" is an insult to actual dive bars. This place is a cesspool with booze. The floors are sticky enough to rip the soles off your shoes, the air smells like a mix of old cigarettes, sour mop water, and broken dreams, and the bathrooms are straight out of a horror movie. If you don't catch a staph infection here, consider yourself lucky. The drinks? Absolute garbage. Watered down, overpriced, and served in glasses that look like they haven't seen soap since the Bush administration. The bartenders couldn't care less -- they'd rather ignore you than make a drink worth drinking. The bouncers act like they're auditioning for a WWE villain role, puffing their chests at anyone who blinks the wrong way. And the crowd? Imagine every bad Tinder date you've ever had stuffed into one room with a soundtrack of off-key karaoke and a sound system that makes your ears beg for mercy. If you like fights breaking out over spilled beer and listening to drunk strangers scream into your face, congratulations -- you've found your paradise. Save yourself the misery. There are porta-potties at construction sites in Mesa that are more inviting than this dump. Roosters Country should come with a warning label: Enter at your own risk, and don't expect to leave with your dignity -- or your shoes.

But a friend wanted to meet for food around the area and this spit popped up on Yelp. It didn't disappoint! I was skeptical at first as having a sign posted at the sidewalk and a bouncer outside the stairs going down, was a sheer sign that this isn't such a secret and speakeasy-like spot. But I was proven wrong very quickly. Dre who was the bouncer and I'd much rather call Drayden, is young but friendly. The hall leading down to the entrance was well decorated. It's hard to miss the door when you can hear people on the other side :). Hostess was nice. Alex immediately introduced himself from behind the bar as I sat down, and Meagan was the main bartender this night. They were both a wealth of knowledge when it came to cocktails. I really wasn't expecting too much but the two drinks I ordered were a solid 5/5. I had the silk bandit and the untold legacy. I like sweet drinks this way. It wasn't too sweet. All the flavors were well balanced and well thought out. They also had a girl singing tonight and she was amazing!!! Thanks for a nice relaxing night. Service was a 5/5 and I'd definitely come back if I'm in the area.

But, my wife had fries that I could steal and I appreciate having a salad option. The little side salad had a nice bitterness complemented by the slight sourness of the dressing. The meat was flavorful and sliced perfectly while the bread was toasty enough to stay together long enough to hold in all that juiciness. Our server was attentive and friendly and I'll happily go back to try some menu staples ... unless the next special demands my attention like that Reuben did.

The queso was rich without being too heavy, and the mustard added a nice contrast. For my meal, I had the Caesar salad topped with a bistro steak cooked a perfect medium rare. The romaine was crisp, the garlic-anchovy dressing bold, and the garlic croutons and parmesan tied everything together. The steak was tender, flavorful, and elevated the salad. At the table, we also ordered the cheesesteak with Angus beef, roasted peppers and onions, Havarti cheese, and garlic aioli served on a baguette, with sweet potato fries. The sandwich was hearty and satisfying, and the fries were really good The wagyu burger was another standout--topped bacon, Gruyère and smoky blue cheese, caramelized onions, tomato jam, and garlic aioli on a pub bun. The beef and bacon were fabulous and the fries cooked to perfection Jake, our server, was terrific--attentive, friendly, and helped make the whole experience even better. We finished with the butterscotch bread pudding topped with vanilla gelato and caramel sauce, which was the perfect ending--warm, comforting, and just the right amount of sweetness Overall, a great patio dining experience with flavorful dishes, excellent service, and plenty of variety.
