If staying in Palmetto Dunes in Hilton Head Island, SC and hanging out at local beach, be sure to stop at The Dunes House Restaurant. The restaurant has beachfront views and it's very casual. There's only outdoor seating. Parking is limited but you can get around by walking along the beach or having shuttle bus drop you off. We ordered 1lb of Peel-N-Eat Shrimp and cheeseburger both were delicious. The shrimp was very fresh. The restaurant has live music on certain nights. It's a fun hangout!! We had really good service. Another great meal on the ocean at Dune House. I have blackened Mahi and wife has blacked shrimp tacos. Both were delicious. The grill masters are experts. Fish is moist without being undercooked or dry. Just the right amount of spice to enhance flavor without burning my mouth. Drinks were great and service was great. Heads up. Outsiders not welcome. Upon attempting driving to the Dunes House, I was abruptly stopped by the sea pines gate keeper and told it is "for residents only". Perfect spot for a quick lunch/snack or if you're just looking for a quick drink to take back to the beach. I've had many Lava flows and pina coladas this summer and the past and my favorite drink has to be the Java flow. Tastes like a pina colada with espresso, but it works. I've also had lunch here where I've gotten the grilled ahi tuna wrap. I really enjoyed this but I wish the ahi tuna could be raw rather than grilled. Great spot for lunch! We ate before heading to the beach and it's the perfect location being right on the beach! Beautiful views and not too hot. Casual spot so that's nice with people coming in from off the beach. I got the shrimp tacos with chips and salsa and it was very good and refreshing! 7 people can comfortable fit around a table as well! The Dunes House is conveniently located right at the beach entrance so grabbing something quick to eat or a drink is easy. We went after cleaning up from the beach for dinner. They offer music each afternoon which is awesome and our food was good. I only gave four stars because they only offer take out food carriers, paper products and plastic ware, which makes some things difficult to eat. I believe there have a few tables inside, but most of the restaurant, including the bar and "kitchen" SERVICE I placed an to go order at the bar since we were taking it to eat on the beach. Bartender was fast and efficient taking the order. PRICE Prices were reasonable for the most part, the kid menu was a little of the high side especially for the quality of the food FOOD This is where things went wrong, I really had high hope for that place, but the food was just bad, no need to sugar coated, it was just bad. Let's start with my kid two mini cheeseburgers, they were just horrible, tasted super strange, very very dry, I honestly thought the meat was bad for a minute so needless to say after a couple bites we threw them away. I had the Blackened Mahi sandwich, and still not sure where the blackened seasoning, that sandwich has zero taste, even trying to use some of the sauce, which I believe was a chipotle aioli it was so bland if you blindfolded me I couldn't tell you if it was fish, beef or chicken And not the fish tacos, advertised as some of the best on the island, well not sure who was voting on that but it was definitely rigged. Very average, probably the 15ht or 20th best fish tacos I ever had, really nothing to write home about, but still the best food of the three dishes we had MISCELLEANOUS Did not check the bathroom out and parking can definitely be a problem, since it is the same parking used for one of the few public beach access in palmetto dunes, so walking from your condo might be the safest options. Please note that you must be staying in a palmetto dune condo or resort to have access to the Dunes house. Also please note that the "kitchen" is just a griddle and they do not have any deep fryers so no fries on the menu. In Conclusion, the location is great, the view of the ocean super cool, but the food, oh boy the food, it's just not good! There are not many choices aside from hotel restaurants on this area of HHI, but the Dunes is a solid choice for lunch, drinks or just to get out of the sun / off the beach! We love coming to The Dune House while on the island. The staff is always friendly and helpful, and the wait is generally quick. The food always comes out hot and flavorful; this visit was no exception. My husband ordered fish tacos loaded with fresh, delicious fish. I went with the chicken sandwich in a grilled wrap instead of my usual order of fish tacos, and WOW! There was plenty of chicken, cheese, and bacon with a mild chipotle sauce.
