Their inside seating is so beautiful and had AC which I wish we could experience on a hot day! But the covered patio was still nice with our pups and the umbrella decor was really cute. All of the staff here were so friendly and helpful with recommendations and checking in. We loved the Puri, goat curry, and semolina cake the most but everything was good! Our whole family (10 of us) went to dinner last month, on Sunday before the Thanksgiving. We didn't have good experience. The food was below average. The Tea Leaf Salad and Chickpeas Fritters were not good. The Cucumber Raita quantity was less than two table spoons! The worst thing about the restarunt was that we told them that we were there to celebrate our two granddaughters (both 10 years old). The server did bring two scoops of ice cream for them. However, when the bill came, they charged us $12 for these two scoops of ice cream! Our total bill was close to $600! This is really was really cheap and graceless behavior. Amazing location filled with an amazing team of hospitality professionals who handled all our needs wishes and requests. The service was exceptional and the food was excellent and beautifully prepared and presented and our guests raved about it all night long. We had our wedding reception at The Duchess on New Years Day with 125 of our family and friends in attendance and we could not be happier with all aspects of our choice in The Duchess. Our signature cocktails and curated wines were on point. The reception style food was superb and the dessert buffet......well I need say no more. We really enjoyed our 1st visit to this lively cafe. It's located in a beautiful facility. The interior has an impressive custom antique looking solid wood bar and coffee / baked goods counter & display case. There is plenty of indoor seating of various types (tables, benches, etc. They even have a pool table in the back room! Service was friendly and efficient. The coffee was hot and fresh. As good as breakfast gets! We were there at 9 am in a Thursday and there was a line. This gave us time to look at all the amazing baked goods on display. They taste as good as they look. I realize that by spending time in line, you spend less time at your table, waiting for beverages and food. It was quite quick, considering how busy it was. The aïoli with the breakfast was very good and herby flavored. The spicy oil that is available is not too hot but bursts with flavor. I also sampled the tea cake and GF brownies and they were delicious too. The whole restaurant is aesthetically pleasing without being fussy. No one answers the phone - just a pre-recorded "up yours for wanting a customer service rep" message giving out 2 email addresses because that's what patrons want from a restaurant - an email option. I'm sure the email responses are warm, and fresh out of the oven, served with a smile and butter. Learned this brunch place from Reddit. We ordered spicy chicken on scallion waffle, Duck Leg Confit, pastries like morning bun, everyday bagel, and samosa pie with tomato sauce along with Americano and Gibraltar Coffee (I requested 4 expresso shots & it is the best!) I enjoyed the chicken because it is truly spicy in the right amount as well as it is soft (it's not that big but I'm not a big eater so the size is sufficient for me) waffle is also soft and buttery (a perfect blend of salty & sweet). The Duck Leg Confit also tastes good but the savory flavor kind of mimics curry. All the pastries that we ordered are also enjoyable, I like the morning bun the most. Lastly, I liked their Gibraltar Coffee because the coffee is strong and at the same time creamy. The Dutchess was an okay dining experience. I think this establishment had a lot of promise but I was slightly let down. Firstly, the service was quite underwhelming. Our waitress gave minimal insight into the menu when we asked questions, and wasn't extremely welcoming. It took 30+ minutes for all of our entrees, with no remorse for the wait. She also offered a refill for my drink without letting me know they weren't free. As for the food, the crispy potatoes and garlic aioli were quite delicious, though the aioli was sparse. I had the rockcod with carrot curry for my main entree; the fish was well cooked and seasoned and the curry was yummy, though there was a very small amount of it - not worth the $35 price tag. Such an interesting experience. The front area features a large bar and a few tables. For dining, they'll guide you around to the side, to a cozy dining room. If you keep going, there is a back room and bar as well as a patio area. The menu is delightfully intriguing. Take you server's recommendations. We had the Naan bread (oh! So yummy) and the Chickpea Fritters--the tamarind chutney is delicious! The Tea Leaf Salad was tart and bright with a good nutty texture. The Lamb Masala is wonderfully rich and creamy. So far, we have only tried out their lovely craft cocktail bar with large windows to let in the light because we arrived at 4 pm for both our visits, but dinner isn't served until after 5 pm. Being Ojai locals, we've been here several times for breakfast and have loved it. This was our first visit for dinner--full-blown sit-down service. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Service was great, food was terrific, ambience----see below. At the server's suggestion, we picked a dish from each category on the menu--great advice. We selected the naan, the crispy rice salad, the biryani, and passion lime pie for dessert. Each dish was terrific. The salad and biryani had just the right amount of heat for us. Having experienced both Indian and Burmese foods elsewhere, (knowing that the chef is Burmese) I must say I thought the dishes we had were more reminiscent of Indian, rather than Burmese food styles. But, as advertised, definitely with a twist, riffing off the more traditional dishes of the same names. Ambience...there was the rub. We are AKs ( meaning chronologically challenged, meaning old folks). One issue that distressed us was the incredibly high noise level. Week-night, so the back area of the restaurant was not in use. The noise level was so high when our area (the middle room) was more than half full that we literally could not hear each other. Hard floor, hard walls, low and hard ceiling. When it was 2/3 empty we could finally talk to and hear each other in conversation across a small table. I know, younger folks seem to adore this type of restaurant setting; not so much the older crowd. Much though we enjoyed the food we both decided we would stick to breakfast there. Pity. read more

We arrived shortly after they opened and I didn't realize how deep the layout was until the hostess guided us down the hall into a pink room with a bar, pool table, and wooden accents. The plants, paintings and family portraits placed throughout the room made me feel like I was a guest in someone's very cute home. Beyond this room I noticed a patio with ample tables for those who wish to dine outside. Our server was friendly and attentive but didn't do much to sell the dishes. When we expressed our curiosity about certain items, he responded by repeating the menu description verbatim. Thanks for the effort..? The Pe Kyaw (chickpea fritters) was okay. I've tried them elsewhere before and anticipated a similar preparation but this dish just reminded me of a simple pan-fried tofu. The Htamin Thoke (crispy rice salad) had a delightfully crisp texture and fresh flavors although my palate was seeking a bit more acid. The Seared Halibut paired deliciously with the summer squash and corn puree, however the fish itself was cooked unevenly. The Falooda was a passionfruit, coconut, nectarine, pistachio party in my mouth. Unique dessert that gave us Halo-Halo vibes. There might have been hints of plum in there too. Some minor gripes here & there but overall, The Dutchess boasts a charming ambiance and I appreciate that they take pride in supporting their farmers/purveyors with locally sourced ingredients. This place was amazing!!! From the food to the friendly staff. The restaurant itself just keeps going and going. You walk in, then you find yourself in another room then another then into a cute little courtyard. We had the crispy rice salad and shared it between 3 people. This is great spot that is always busy during the weekend lunch rush. Great baked goods, south asian inspired dishes, and a great staff make for a great experience. I've been a few times and had lunch solo recently. Great flavors and hearty, warm plates didn't disappoint. There's a back room with tables, or you can hang at the bar at the front of the location. There are a few tables out front and on the sidewalk, but that line will be in your line of sight. I would love to come for dinner as I find that menu more interesting, but when I do visit during the day, I get that amazing morning roll and any other baked goods I can find. read more

I wish I could say this place lived to the hype everyone gave me about it but... no - they forgot my order, my iced matcha latte took forever and I had to go inside to ask for it again after I had already finished my food, I ordered it with lavender syrup and they gave me a regular one. The bakery items were good - not great, not outstanding like everyone raves about, absolutely overpriced but I suppose to American standards it was definately better and healthier than your average sugar-filled baked goods from Starbucks or the grocery store. Holy Moly. The pastries Do yourself a favor and indulge. Every bite was absolutely delicious. MY favorites were the cinnamon and date pastry and the savory samosa. To die for. We had a large party and I saw delightful eye rolls from everyone each time they took a bite! It seems the crowd favorite was the Burmese fried chicken sandwich! Mind blown! The staff was so friendly. I asked the kind woman at the register for her favorite and got pastrami sandwich. Unfortunately, no disrespect to her , this is the reason I docked a star. I did not love it, the meat was very fatty, and tough to chew. There was also a lot of bread, and while it was delicious, it was tough to eat and scratched the roof of my mouth. The flavor was too rich for me, and the only side dish that could cut it was the slaw. BUT ASIDE FROM THAT... I would drive up from LA for the pastries and staff alone! We came here twice while we were visiting Ojai in October, once for breakfast and once for dinner and both times were great. Their pastries are flaky and delicious. We got the almond croissant and a citrus cake. Pastries were great but the star is their dinner menu. We got there at 5pm and they were already packed but we got seated at their long communal table right away. The restaurant is darker and moodier for their dinner service which was a nice contrast from the day time. We got the lamb biryanis with puff pastry crust, crispy rice salad and a catfish soup (recommendation of the server). The crispy rice salad was one of the best things I've ever eaten. I still think about it. The catfish soup was also flavorful and not fishy at all. My husband who cannot eat fish really enjoyed that soup. The biryani had a nice puff pastry on top but compared to the other two it wasn't the star. I'll definitely come back if I'm ever in Ojai. Loved everything about it. :) read more
