The food was excellent! I didn't know that Grilled Cheese could be upgraded. I liked the traditional recipe. I now have a new Grilled Cheese sandwich and it's from The Eagle! The sweet tea was just like the tea I had growing up. The second glass wasn't. The server was Michael Gnarly Ponytail and was being shadowed by Kailey (sp). He was informative about the food served, friendly, responded quickly with requests, and caught a mistake with the order before bringing it to the table. He talks very fast, and should work on it, but he deserves the 5 out of 5 rating. I loved the ambiance! At the entrance, there is an old apartment bank of mailboxes, and there are lots of wooden chairs and booths. As a first time visit in Louisville, I was looking for quintessential southern comfort food and was drawn to this place based on the reviews. So glad we came and was worth it! The food was delicious and satisfying. Friendly service. Busy place, so get there early or sit at the bar if you don't have a reservation. Great location to walk around for perusing other restaurants. After reviewing the menu, we immediately ordered the fried chicken after being told it was marinated for 21 hours. The 1/2 chicken size came with a leg, wing, thigh, and breast. The meat was juicy and well seasoned as was the crispy skin which was lightly breaded throughout. Overall, the fried chicken was savory, fresh, delicious, and not greasy. Drizzle on the hot honey which comes on the side! For sides, we ordered the hush puppies (under appetizers), collard greens, and horseradish mashed potatoes with gravy. The hush puppies were amazing and seriously the best we've had, with corn kernels and bits of jalapeño throughout, cooked up crispy and moist, served with remoulade sauce. Collard greens were tender and flavorful with pieces of ham hock. Horseradish mashed potatoes were fluffy with a hint of horseradish. A solid meal! Fair prices. Would come back and highly recommend. Unfortunately, I failed to get a snap of my food. My chicken sandwich was really good, and the house-made biscuits were delicious. My only qualm was the overwhelming emphasis on liquor: the menu was 75% drinks, 25% food. That was reflected in the service, which seemed stilted compared to the table beside us that was rolling with alcohol. So if you're going for the drink, then this place is for you. Main reason for the low review was the service. Our servers attitude was very poor. Having worked in the food industry for many years we worked hard to change our first impression. Food was good, but most items had a hint of spice. Bartender was very nice. Not sure I have ever been to a restaurant were they charged for tea refills. read more

During my travel to Louisville, I've avoided dining at chain restaurants. I saw a Yelp list of top Louisville restaurants that included many places where I've dined. On that list was The Eagle. So I said, I must check it out. I arrive for dinner and was seated at a small table in the bar. The hostess told me the bartender would be my server. So the bar has three customers. Not much going on at 6pm on a Monday. So I wait, and wait some more. I turn in my seat so the bartender can see I'm looking at him. Now I could have stood up and waved my arms, but that wasn't my plan. As the clock ticks towards 15 minutes, I'm ready to leave. Then the bartender arrives. Nice, friendly guy. But no acknowledgment of the delay. I tell him I want to order an IPA, the half chicken, a side of the horseradish mashed potatoes and start with the brown sugar bacon. I don't get why the bacon comes out in a paper cup and it's not warm or hot. It was simply room temperature. The chicken was very moist and tender. But it lacked spicing to enhance the flavor. It was just dull. The flavor of the horseradish potatoes has so little horseradish that it's almost false advertising to say it contains horseradish. Before I settle up, I order a Hendricks and tonic. My go-to drink. Somehow the restaurant is out of tonic and the bartender tells me he'll have to use club soda. I can tell you, it wasn't as good. I was expecting such a better experience. Reading the other reviews on this page makes me think I just had a bad experience. Well, the Eagle failed on my first trial. First time I went it was amazing, the mac and cheese was great, and service was okay. Second time.. not so much. Dirty glasses everywhere when we walked in, and the mac and cheese had a strong after taste of almost a sweet soapy taste, similar to how laundry detergent smells. This is my first time ever trying this restaurant. I came all the way from Ohio and I was not disappointed in the slightest. I work at a brewery back home and this is not your regular bar and grill. The food is cost friendly and very filling. I would 10/10 recommend this restaurant to everyone I know! Second time back since the start of the pandemic. Not greatly impressed this time. Drinks were made incorrectly two times. As a former bartender I quickly recognized a new bartender. The manager and other bartender assisted him as well. The bartender with the dreadlocks was very engaging with all of the customers and quick to fix any errors. We were very curious when a food runner came from the kitchen with food to be delivered and he had food in his mouth as well. That isn't something patrons want to see. At first we thought it was something he may have grabbed a bite of before leaving the kitchen. However he came back out of the kitchen not chewing and all of a sudden he was eating something again. Not sure about this still. We originally liked the spot and were excited to see how they had changed and grown over the year since our last visit. The food was great. The ambience is nice as well. I sat at the bar both visits and the bartender in each case was friendly and had good bourbon suggestions. I had been to the eagle once, back when it first opened. Salty that they replaced el Camino, my very favorite restaurant in the ville. The experience was ok. Just felt like a pretentious chicken joint. Recently decided to give it another try. It's still not el Camino (they're not trying to be) but I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious everything was. The chicken was juicy and flavorful. The sides were hard to choose from, I wanted everything. I can't remember what I ended up getting, but it was very tasty. I imagine well be back sometime. read more

They were extremely busy and the hosts were overwhelmed, but there just wasn't a great system in place to manage takeout order flow and walk-in diner flow. All of the sides are phenomenal, so you'll want to make several trips with your friends & fam so you can order every one and pass them around the table. The bar serves a great variety of beer and cocktails, and I'm pleased to report that they regularly carry my favorite KY Bourbon Barrel Ale on tap. Obviously the hot chicken is the main draw and it is WORTH IT, but don't sleep on the shrimp po' boy or the appetizer menu, and if you're feeling like something leafy, the salads are fresh and tasty. Best fried chicken in Kentuckiana, hands down. The chicken is fresh, juicy, and perfectly crusted. The crust is crisp and has a nice kick to it - pairs well with their spicy honey drizzled on it. You can tell a lot of care is taken here with their ingredients, everything is really fresh and comes out quickly. Our chicken arrived hot, drinks remained refilled, server was insanely nice and prompt; no complaints here at all except the consistency of the cole slaw. The slaw was really dry, no creaminess to it. That was the only minor flaw we found with the entire meal and atmosphere! We had the corn and jalapeño fritters, the 1/4 dark chicken, the 1/2 chicken, slaw, greens, an iced tea, and one Gumballhead beer. Total for all was $43 before tip - well worth it. Side note: parking is a major feat. There's parking in the rear of the restaurant, but the lot fills fast, has tons of potholes, and is up on a slope so beware when pulling in and out, you will scratch the entire bottom of your car. read more

The Eagle specializes in fried chicken and by specialize, I mean crispy, flavorful, fried chicken. Cage free, brined, deep fried and served with house made hot honey. They serve it whole, half, or in quarters. We ordered the half and a quarter, a sweet potato crock, which is a skillet dish of sweet potatoes served with marshmallows on top, 2 orders of mac n cheese, also in a skillet using 5 cheeses and garlic bread crumbs, and collard greens, which are stewed with ham hocks and bacon. All were delicious! They also offer salads, soups, and sandwiches. I have had the fried chicken sandwich in the past and it's excellent. On the bar menu, you have an eclectic assortment of draft and bottled beers, various wines, and some tasty cocktails. There is something for everyone. We sat at the bar and the bar keep was friendly and knowledgeable about their menu which can be rare these days. The next day someone in our party was still talking about what a great meal it was.
