My mom and I tried this spot recently on a Thursday evening. And let me start by saying we will be back!! The customer service was great, food was hot and fresh and the ambience was relaxing. Loved watching the world go by from our seat, surrounded by a nostalgic feeling. We split meals she got the chicken tenders and I got the chicken bacon loaded macaroni. It was all very delicious! We got take out for our husbands one got sliders and the other fish and chips and even after a car ride home they loved their meals. Update, we dine here every couple of months since it's close to our kids sporting events. It's a casual restaurant with a diverse menu that everyone is always happy with. My usual order is the Asian chicken salad, which is absolutely delicious. Teriyaki chicken on top of a salad with fried noodles and a peanut dressing. I ordered something new last night... the tavern club with fries. Typical club sandwich done right, buttery bread with thick slice of ham, bacon bits, cheese, turkey and lots of mayo. Nice impromptu casual dinner date spot! Parking limited but normal for this area along Frankfort Avenue. This was our first time to eat here. It was highly recommended by our family who visit often. We arrived late afternoon and chose a booth since they weren't busy. Our server came over quickly and took our order for drinks. We decided to get spicy bloody Mary's which were fantastic. I picked the Fish and chips. Four large Cod Filets, Hush Puppies, Slaw and French Fries. My wife got the Fish sandwich. A large piece of Cod on a bun and Fries. The fish was firm and lightly breaded and delicious. Our server brought our food quickly and made sure to check back on several times to ensure everything was just right. The service was exceptional. Always in search of a great chicken wing, I had heard that Hillcrest Tavern had some great wings. I found myself close and decided to stop by and try them out. Parking as always is a challenge in the area, but I got lucky and found a spot not to far away. Walked in, the place was not to crowded. Took my seat and the very nice server took my order. When my chicken wings came out they looked very tasty. The wings had a great taste, but unfortunately they were a little over cooked. I did enjoy the taste. This place was pleasantly surprising! We came here expecting bar food, and although the menu is just sandwiches and things for the most part, it was delicious! We started with the spinach dip which was super unique but very yummy. For entrees we got the crab cake sandwich, buffalo chicken sandwich, ville cheesesteak, BBQ bacon burger, and the OLT Pasta. Everything was so good, except for the person who got the cheesesteak was not a fan. We all got truffle fries for our side and it was definitely the highlight of our meal, especially along with the delicious ranch! Everyone here was also so nice and quick with service. Nice ambiance and whole sitting at the bar, the staff were personable. Today was the wing special day at $1 per wing. I asked for them to be dropped raw and cooked. They said today that was not possible and they would need to be double fried. That means they cook ahead of time and finish the last 5 min when you order. Very common where wings are a special where they fry in batches, all day and then set them aside for the evening rush. Problem with that is they only come out warm and the meat pulls differently off the bone. The best wings you'll have will be fried from raw and come out piping hot. I ordered the Philly cheeses steak and onion rings. The Philly was not traditional but was excellent! Made from an in-house roast. The onion rings were some of the best I've had! For starts work ordered this food to go so I've never been inside the restaurant but the pictures give me a drakes like vibe. I got the beer battered fried fish Sandwich with onion rings. So even with it being to go and sitting in a box for 20 plus minutes it arrived and was still hot and had an amazing crunch with great flakey white fish. I'd only imagine if I ate there it would be one of my favorite fish sandwiches outside of pastimes in j town. The onion rings didn't hold up well in the Togo but that's not on them that should be expected. They lost the crunch but damnit they were still good. So again getting these fresh are easily 5/5 so I'm going off that mindset. Can't wait to visit and dine in at this location. I'd for sure give this spot a try if you're curious. Upon entering the parking lot we were nearly hit by a man in a SUV. As we crossed the parking lot the man gave us dirty looks like we were wasting his time. The man the proceeded to park in the ONLY handicap spot in the establishment. I didn't agree with it but we went in and got sat. A few minutes later, the same man, able bodied, comes in and goes into the kitchen and starts instructing employees. Clearly a manager or an owner. This is despicable, unacceptable, and rude behavior. There are several schools and elderly in the area, that spot is not for people who are able bodied. Disgusting show of thanks to the customers. We went there for the first time tonight and highly recommend! We got the Portobello Fries for an appetizer and they were delicious! Nice and crispy and you get plenty of them! I got the mini sliders and fries and both were very good! My husband got wings, onion rings and cole slaw and said all were really good. The portion sizes and really big so we were able to bring enough home to have for lunch tomorrow. Our server was awesome! Very friendly and attentive! We will definitely be back! read more

Very friendly staff! Everyone is so nice. This has the feel of a great neighborhood bar. Started off with cocktails. I got the "Dan"hatten, yup a standard Manhattan but it was good. Since it was Sunday we got their 5 for $5 wings dry rub. So crispy and good. For meal I got the Double stack with fries . Okay, so their fries are wonderful and the burger's are excellent. Our group of 5 came here for a late lunch on a Sunday afternoon. Service was friendly and welcoming. Food was good bar food. Good prices on the wings which freshly prepared and not just reheated. Look at that burger! When most places are cleaning up after lunch and closed down or serving scaled back menus in preparation for dinner, the tavern burger fills the gap. This is the Knocker burger, and it's simplicity is it's strength. Sure, standard fixings, but there's more to a burger than that. How it's prepped, cooked, and the bun and how the cheese melts all play into it, and this was nailed. 5th experience at tavern and every single time it's been great. They are known for their burgers so of course we went in for those. The sliders were pretty good. I've had better. Will try a different burger next time For hand cut fries they were crispy which made me really happy because I don't like soggy bendy fries The onion rings were delicious. The fried pickles were delicious The sweet tea was perfect. Not too sweet but still tasted like tea The service wasn't particularly great, the waitress definitely wasn't in a hurry and we were definitely on her timeline that day. The worst part of our experience was the noise. The place wasn't crowded and they had a few TVs on but they weren't extremely loud but there is nothing to absorb the noise around you and it sounded like we were in a stadium full of people. We could barely hear each other across the table from one another yet we could hear everyone else's conversations very loudly. So if we try that other burger it will definitely be to go. read more

Hilcrest tavern is an American restaurant and bar located off popular fagbkfprt ave in Lousiville Kentucky. Near as the name suggests the hillcrest ave intersection. Me and my buddy Jeremy j was walking around and exploring Frankfort ave on a late December Tuesday night when we decided to stop into this place. We had already eaten and was gonna check out the bar scene in the area. Coming in we was expecting a traditional bar. To our surprise this was more of a full scale restaurant that happened to have a bar with a full bar menu. Instead of a table we decided to sit at the bar. We grabbed a couple of beers and since they had a full food we grabbed a 5 piece wing basic as it happens to be 75 cent wings night. So that was nice. Service here was fast and prompt and the workers were nice and friendly. The wings had a good original flavor to them. More of traditional non spicy sauce but it had a good taste to it. Overall was a very nice place. Decor almost had a 50s diner vibe to it and the bar was very nice and intimate as well. I'll absolutely come back and get a full restaurant experience with the family now that I know it's not just a 21 and over bar atmosphere. read more

The menu is basically the same at the Old Louisville Tavern, which is just fine by me. We came here with a group of about 8 on a monday evening before we had rehearsal. I knew already what I was going to get because the menu is familiar...the fancy pants burger and some truffle fries (I can never have enough truffle flavor). It hit the spot and it came out done right. They had a booth big enough for all of us with enough space for us to have some elbow room while we ate. We had some issues at the time with service...there were some issues with a couple folks' orders and things taking a very long time to be made and brought out. Eventually everything came out and eventually it was all correct, but we were on a timeline and it became crunched with this issue. I am willing to believe it was a one off, and my food and personal experience was fine, but it colored the whole experience for everyone else. We haven't been back for a group meal since then. It may be better for smaller groups or for carry out. read more

Amazing little joint. Parking is hard at times but tons of free street parking. We've been multiple times and it's so good. Service as always been wonderful and staff are friendly. The salad is so good and large enough to share! They have wing specials and they are decently sized. The burgers are super yummy! I didn't want to share. Hillcrest Tavern is one of my favorite places for good bar food. I have tried several different things but I love the fish sandwich and the veggie mac and cheese the most. I think they might have the best fish sandwich in Louisville. The bar is really spacious with two dining rooms and plenty of booths. They also have online ordering so it's a good spot for takeout, too! The only thing that keeps this review from being five stars is I've had trouble getting service the last two times I have been. I know staffing is an issue for many places right now and I am definitely sympathetic to that, but one of these times my spouse and I were one of only two tables in the whole place.
