I will go in record stating that the Rock Filet is the best meal in the city. Solid filet that you cook yourself at the table. I've had it plenty of times and I think it matches best with the Caesar salad and long grain wild rice for your side. Always have solid service and their beers are pretty good! Some folks don't think you should have to cook your own meal, but the whole experience is enjoyable. I highly recommend and can't wait to get back for my next Rock Filet! read more

The place itself is really pretty inside, but unfortunately smells like sewer. When I asked the bartender, he replied it was an old building. Disappointed... came here for dinner before a show. Made reservations... place was cute in person. Had looked online before at the menu and reviews... was hesitant but hoping for better. Once we go there... we were told by the waitress that we needed to leave our table at a certain time... which was fine bc we needed to be at a show... but it was a bit tacky I guess in the delivery... we ordered our food bc we needed to leave... I got the crab cakes... beyond super disappointed. They were not good at all. I've had better crab cakes at other restaurants and I've made better crab cakes at home. These were awful... I could have cooked better. My boyfriend meal he ordered the new year eve steak special... unfortunately it seemed to have been ruined bc they put cheese on top of a good piece of steak which wasn't necessarily. At the end of the night... food was extremely disappointing... I wouldn't not be back! I was in Columbus on business (from LA) and found Elevator when I searched for local breweries. Beers were tasty and diverse, food was good (though I didn't try any meat - only had the veggie stir fry), staff was as friendly as you wanted them to be, and the ambience was unique. Place had a "historical" vibe to it, whatever that means... Apparently the property was built in 1897. Highly recommend! read more

I have eaten here a handful of times and I'm impressed every time. I enjoy the food (I'm vegetarian), I enjoy the beer options, the service is good, and the decor is something to see. It's a place I like to take out-of-towners or recommend them to. It's close to other cool places downtown, so that means parking is a bit more difficult. Also, you can buy their bottled beer in local stores or try out their tap room on 4th St. if you just want the beer and not the food. read more

I LOVE the Elevator. It brings me up when I'm feelin' down. An ex-brothel and billiard hall, there's still antique pool tables in the back. This place has charm, class and character. And possibly some of the finest craft brews in town. The food is top-notch if you select wisely...if I ate meat, I'd eat the steak that comes out still cooking on its hot slab of marble and branded with the Elevator "e" logo. But I don't, so I stick to tweaking menu items. But that's not what you come here for kids, it's the craft brews. Really, really amazing, madly-skilled brewers who are a helluva lot of fun make it in their newer brewing location on 4th street. For basics, try the Dark Horse and Mogabi. And then try anything else, especially the seasonal beer of the month. And especially during happy hour. Craving the brew on your side of town, at your favorite watering hole? Ask the bartenders/owners to carry Elevator beer... they come in bottles now, so that they may more easily come to you. Schmidt's always carries Elevator's Oktoberfest on tap. Village Idiot has the brews in bottles. Elevator goodness is 'going up' all over the place. Make sure they are in your building. read more

I'd give Elevator a solid 3.5 stars if that were an option. But because it's not, I'm rounding down to just three. Elevator is a passable location for work-oriented needs downtown. It takes reservations and is able to accommodate groups larger than four. (Amazing that more places downtown CAN'T do that.) The food is fine, with plenty of options to satisfy the needs of any reasonably diverse group. It's not so spectacular that I'd go out of my way to come down outside of the work day however. It also is a perfect happy hour location. The beer isn't bad, although it's not my favorite brewery in town. The prices during happy hour are great, however. And the patio is a good one. The MBA (Masters of Beer Appreciation) program is fun, and provides an excuse to go to happy hour there at least once a month. read more

I give this place five stars on the atmosphere alone. It has to be the cooled bar I have ever been in and I've been in quite a few cool old bars. I ordered the Habanero Chicken sandwich and it didn't disappoint. I had the Elevator dark lager on tap. It was a good beer. My only disappointment was no stouts or porters on tap tonight but I can't complain. The guys behind the bar did a great job and were working their tails off. My partner in crime and I were in town to see a show at the Palace Theatre. We met another couple who were headed out for drinks before the show and suggested this place. We are so grateful that they did! The exterior and interior of this downtown brewery were simply stunning! The vibe was great, mysterious...I felt like a lot has happened in that building and boy was I right! From my understanding, it was once a speakeasy, a brothel, a cigar shop and a pool hall. The location was spot-on, too. The service was exceptional for 5:30 on a Tuesday night. Our waitress, though I fail to remember her name, was friendly, very informative about the history of the building and quite efficient. I ordered the vegan stirfry and a side of house fries. The stirfry was tasty, a bit spicy. Fries were the typical skin on, lightly salted pub fare fries. Of course, though, I mainly came to drink beer!!! I enjoyed many pints of the Bleeding Buckeye Red Ale. It's a fine, malty, but not too sweet red ale that had a hint of hoppiness on the finish. ABV at 5.7%, a bit above being a session ale. It paired lovely with my food. My partner in crime started with the SAUERKRAUT BALLS, which were delicious. Next up was the BOTT BURGER =bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, sesame brioche with house fries. He cleaned his plate and washed it down with some of the Bleeding Buckeye Red Ale, too. This was very close to the hotel I was staying at, and with the decent reviews I saw on Yelp, the boss and I decided to give it a try. I very much needed a drink and after perusing the beer menu, I had no idea what I should order. Our server, a lovely lady, asked me a series of questions to see what I'd like and did a great job in finding a beer I would enjoy. I got the Darkhorse Lager. The funny thing was when my boss said, "I'll have the same thing she's having." My boss doesn't drink, but apparently he wanted to drink with me that night. We placed our orders and beer bread was brought to our table. I am not a big bread fan unless its really good stuff, and this wasn't bad at all. I loved that it was still warm and the butter melted perfectly into it! I went with the Thai beef tenderloin salad and enjoyed it. The greens were fresh and crisp, the beef was flavored nicely and of course, tender. The environment is beautiful and the long bar has a very, very cool feel to it. Large, bustling restaurant - our 8pm reservation Saturday was not necessary, but the place was still relatively packed. Upscale casual place. $5 valet at the southwest corner of Spring and High. We started with Calamari and Corn Brat apps and split a six beer sampler. The apps were amazing, and we would highly recommend both - the first was sweet and spicy, and the second was...well.. brat pieces in corn batter with mustard dip (who wouldn't love that?). All beers in the sampler were surprisingly good, and we particularly enjoyed the Pale Ale and Mogabi. Next up, entrees. Rock Filet for Ken (similar to Steak on a Stone concept, but imagine a less flavorful filet and a less hot stone) and Crab Cakes for me. I'd orginally ordered the Sun Fish entree, but our waiter came back (after 20 minutes) to tell me they were out... after he'd talked it up like it was the best dish ever. Both entrees were disappointing, especially after the fabulous apps, not to mention pretty pricey. If I found myself at Elevator again I would only order beer and apps. read more

They have 3 dollar pints for happy hour, which is great, especially compared to other downtown bars who fail to have any good happy hour specials. Elevator is located in downtown Columbus, Ohio in the historic Columbia building (built in 1897). Originally this was a gentleman's saloon that distilled whiskey on the second floor. The architecture and ambience here is very unique. It's as if this place was trapped in time with a beautiful bar, mosaic tile floor, stained glass and phenomenal woodwork, ceilings and lighting. The back-bar won the blue ribbon for craftsmanship at the 1893 World Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Elevator has captured the essence of the era, but blends in contemporary beers, food and style. There are several handcrafted brew options here. I have tried the "Three Frog's" IPA and the "Heiferweizen" Wheat Beer. Both were very well crafted. The Three Frog's was loaded with hops and balanced well. There is a nice citrus aftertaste. The Heiferweizen was a nice American style hefeweizen. It wasn't too heavy like some of the unfiltered versions out there today. Overall I appreciate the atmosphere and food you get here with a great beer. read more

If only it wasn't so dirty.. That's really my biggest complaint. The almond crusted chicken salad is amazing, but just not amazing enough to get over how incredibly dirty the booths and walls are. If you aren't dusting the parts of the restaurant that I can see, how can I believe that the parts that I cannot see are clean? Besides the dirt, I learned today that the food is not fresh. Decided to try the vegan stirfry and requested no onions. The waiter came back out and advised they could not remove the onions from the frozen vegetable mix. My friend Dan Goodall introduced me to this very unique and awesome place. Every time I come here I feel right at home. The bartenders who i've met so far are very knowledgable about the menu and alcoholic beverages and friendly. The happy hour here from 3-7 is awesome. The bar has a very old style look to it but very stylish and upscale if you will. They have a nice bar area which is relatively big compared to some other places downtown. And a very nice dining room area where you can talk and eat/drink the night away with good friends! I went to the Elevator for dinner last week on a whim after the restaurant we tried to go to surprised us by being closed. How lucky for me! I can't imagine the first restaurant topping Elevator. The waitstaff was very pleasant and friendly. The menu surprised me - everything was priced about $10 cheaper than the description looked like it would merit. I got the rock steak filet with mashed potatos and the house salad, my friend got the same entree with a wedge salad, and my sister got a chicken entree. All of us were, to say the least, pleased. The filet was 7-oz and came out on a 500 degree rock that cooked as we ate, so every bite was just as well-done (in my case, incredibly rare!) as I liked it. The filet was excellent, and considering its sized, I was very surprised it was only $27. The mashed potatoes on the side were perfect, and some how very light, which was perfect - it's always agony to try to force down those last bites of heavy mashed potatoes after a perfect steak. The steak also came with three dipping sauces - a ale-based gravy, a peppercorn sauce, and a Bernaise - I only loved the Bernaise. My friend got the monthly beer, and was very impressed. My sister also greatly enjoyed her chicken dish (I tried it, but I don't remember it much - as good as chicken can be, it's never going to be memorable after an excellent steak). The decor was a lot of nice furniture and dark woods. As I walked out, I felt like I was walking through one of few places in Columbus that make Columbus feel like it has character. The menu is sophisticated, and the food is excellent - but the waitstaff is dressed down, and the prices could be considerably higher and still seem reasonable for the food and atmosphere. An excellent experience - one that will always be at the top of my lists to share with guests to Columbus (and generally anyone who appreciates good food!). read more

First, just walking in the place is an experience. Amazing decor and architecture. Don't miss the Ohio map made of tools from our grandfather's age and the gnome guarding the entrance to the pool tables. Bother the Mocha Plum and Dark Force are excellent choices if you like dark brews. Service is above par. The kid's steak was highly rated by our 10 year old and the black bean quinoa burger was enjoyed by both adults. The only warning comes from the 8 year old concerning the quesadillas - if you're from a place that actually knows how to make them, don't order them. The good stuff first. I asked for a flight of the 3 darkest beers. The nut brown, the porter, and the doppelbock. The nut brown was a little weak, as it always seems to be at microbreweries. The doppelbock was passable. But the porter was amazing. A frothy cup of malty deliciousness. I'll definitely return for the porter if nothing else. The hummus appetizer was pretty good, but that's as far as I went on the menu. However, there was a guy at the bar eating the The Rock Filet. I have no idea if it's a good deal, or if it even tastes good. But the novelty of the presentation scores points in my book regardless. The atmosphere. I don't know where to go with this. It's one of those places that stands more as a testament to what it was in the past than what it is now. The interior is amazing. Cathedral ceilings, tiled floors, ornately carved wood. It's lit with subtle blue neon. I EXPECTED a beautiful blonde woman in a bright red dress to come running in asking for help. And I felt completely unprepared, having sat at the bar without a tommy gun, or at least a small revolver in my sock. I went on a Tuesday night. I'm not sure what the scene is like on a Friday or Saturday. But I imagine it's hard to pack a place like that these days. The location is just out of reach of the Short North, and just out of reach of the core downtown restaurants. Given that, I assume its harder to gather the cash flow to push the food and service to the level that you would expect from a restaurant with that kind of atmosphere. Visited with a group for lunch and sat on the patio. Several things went wrong. It took some time for our server to take our orders. Then it took a very long time to get our appetizer (hummus and pita btw). The hummus texture was watery than your typical hummus. House specialty maybe? Entrees finally arrived. My salad was filled with yellow, wilted leaves. I can usually let certain things slip. But this was not it. So I asked for another salad which arrived maybe 10-15 mins later. Some GREAT things: martini's, the hot rock, the spicy tuna tartar appetizer, the history of Elevator and the aged yet modern decor. My martini was prepared just right. It was clear with a light taste of vermouth and the only 'dirt' came from the stuffed olives. The hot rock is they way you can cook, to your own preference, a steak or seafood. I think it's a fun date idea. The spicy tuna tartar, well, it was just plain good. The history of Elevator is printed on the menu, and I forgot most of the details, but basically it's one of the, or the first restaurant in Columbus. I guess it served during prohibition??? or maybe the interesting point was that it survived prohibition. Today there are stories that it's haunted. Unfortunately, I did not have the pleasure. The building is beautiful stained glass everywhere. I went here with a group of 8. Everyone enjoyed their meals I had the rids and tries the pork chops. It was all delicious. Be warned the Cajun fries are no joke! The atmophere was trendy I tought I was in Chicago not Columbus! The servers were friendly enough but not attentive enough. I was a little disapointed when a waitress (who was not my watiress) locked eyes with me know i wanted something and chose to turn and walk the other way. The restrooms are down a narrow stair fairly stepp stair case I would take an older or special needs person here. They have free pool. We stopped in this place on a Friday evening without a reservation and got a table no problem, hostess was great, we were excited to dine here as it was recommended by a friend and the back story is neat, building is full of history. Unfortunately, I have now told you the best part of the evening. The server could not recommend a wine (at all), she was trying to remember which came with a screw top and which didn't. When she did bring the wine (with a cork) she opened it spilling wine all over the table. She poured it and never came back to wipe the table, we borrowed some napkins from a neighbouring table. We ordered corn and black bean soap and wedge salad, both were ok. The entrees were seared ahi tuna and mahi mahi, both were not good enough to finish. The tuna had a pound of mashed potatoes accompanied by a strange mix of boiled veggies. The piece tuna had a thick coating of burnt brown sugar and was cold and fishy tasting. The mahi-mahi was good, however the risotto had what seemed to be processed sweet potatoes and peas mixed in, not fresh tasting at all. When you look closely at the decor, you will also noticed a think layer of dust covering everything that can't be reached easily, looks like it's been years since this place has been properly cleaned. I feel like this place is surviving solely on historical ratings and nostalgia. I would not recommend this place nor would I ever go back, worst 100 bucks I've spent in a while. read more

Unexpected pleasure! Located in an old turn of the century (the 20th century) building that housed a saloon and billiard hall, the interior itself is worth the trip! A huge mahogany bar, that purportedly won some award at the time, still stands and is quite impressive. There are inlaid tile floors and intricate stained glass windows. The food was equally impressive- my wife had the short rib mac n' cheese and I had the pulled pork sandwich- both very good. And, though we usually don't get dessert, we couldn't resist the peach cobbler and cinnamon apple bread pudding with Carmel sauce and ice cream...it was as good as it sounds! Perfect for groups. I have not tried the happy hour. I am notoriously hype adverse as I have said before. I tend to shy away from the popular for the unheralded, the unsung, the forgotten that have no swag clothing draping people around town. I live in Columbus for godsakes, the city that manifest this attraction to the underated perfectly. So it is in the market of local microbrews, that acclaimed pantheon of CBC and North High, the creme-de-la-creme of Land Grant and Wolf Ridge, the ultra-elite but popularly cheered Seventh Son and Four Strings ( all great places btw)--and even the pride of Scotland's new brewery import Brewdog ( who's Punk IPA is my current fridge choice) that I selected Elevator as my go to local mircobrew; it's my Dune over everyone Star Wars or Star Trek, my X-Game, my Raincoats over Nirvana. It took me too long to try their draught haus on High Street in the historical and crafted building just south of Spring. The building and its decor, of which has been wonderfully restored, was the location of The Botts Brother's Billard Saloon, a business started in the late 18th century. They made local history when one of the brothers got in a brouhaha with Peter Sells, the founder of the circus, in fin de siecle Columbus. It seems the younger brother, Billie Bots, made his way to the Romanesque mansion on Dennison when Sells was out-of-town and cuckolded him with his wife Mary. The affair made it's way into court which threw Victorian Columbusites into a fizzy frenzy. It was a huge story. Unfortunetly, sexism reigned and it was Mary, not Billie that took the worse in the end. So for both fav microbrew and historical interest I was glad to finally visit. I went early Friday, around four. Too early in fact as I wasn't able to try their stuffed crabs available at five. Shame. I was jonesing for them landlock city or not. So I settled for a pulled pork with fries. This meal I would say, considering being in the Yankee-ist of Yankees states was average. There was nothing special about it, but nothing wrong either. I'll make sure to visit later, when dinner entries can be served. Beer of course is great. I like Bleeding Buckeye a fine red ale that I used to be able to get around at taverns and stores around town but hadn't seen in awhile. Thick and hoppy, this brew goes good with french dips, corn beef, and cold pizza. Not just a suck-up to the fans, BB makes a nice football drink and energizes as it intoxicate--everything needed for yelling at the TV like a psycho unleashed with rage and emotional instability as all good Ohio State football fans must be. I hope they release this full flavor top brew for the fall. I also checked out their Three Frogs IPA which ranks in my top five Indian Pales in town, and a glass of Brewmaster Vics, the alcohol high Imperial IPA--another good choice. ( One disappointment, a thing you would expect a brewer would get right, will not be said here. I will add a short rant about it at the end because I bitch about it too much. Look for * for rant below. ) Of course the decor is special. The neo-classical trimings are laid on thick. The moldings, the stained windows which lights the place in primary colors, the mosiac wood floor, ivory fake columns give the place a delicious class. The mahogany bar is beautiful, and the back bar won an award in the 1893 World Fair. You'd have to believe anybody who was somebody in early century Columbus sat here. It was busier than expected when I came. I like going alone to new places to get a feel before inviting friends and dates. I often come on happy hour times when I have more space. This place seem a bit different. It is popular late afternoons, early evening, I suppose because of the afterwork downtown crowd. There was few seats open at their long bar. The place was understaffed. I think they had calloffs, it happens. But I wasn't able to have the lone bartenders attention enough to have samples of beer. Considering all, four stars is about right. A great historic amosphere, cool decor, great beer, and decent food would make this a fine stop when visiting downtown. Parking is at meters on high and spring. Went tonight with a group from work- we were here on business. We tried the tuna tartare, calamari, sauerkraut balls, crab stuffed scallops, bistro surf & turf, Mac and cheese, potstickers & fish/chips. My favorite was the calamari & sauerkraut balls. First, the food is awesome. Everything from the simple pulled pork sandwich and appetizers to the 500 degree stone you can cook your beef or tuna on is all delicious. The beer is awesome as well - so many kinds and they're all pretty tasty. The bar and restaurant itself is amazing - over 100 years old, the place looks pristine. The huge bar is impressive, as are the ancient pool tables. They get a star off for their keg sales. Ive purchased 5 kegs over the last few years from them, and had issues with getting them on 4 of 5 instances, either with getting the keg itself, returning it, or getting deposits back. read more
