I was torn in rating The Elm between 3 or 4 but since our group had a nice time that evening, I decided on giving a 4. We were able to make reservations through the Resy app for a Saturday night. The main floor of the restaurant was beautiful and sleek but because of the indoor dining restrictions, all the diners were seated on the second level. There were both indoor and outdoor areas on the upper level. We were seated in the outdoor area which had a tent and was heated. Our server, who also served as our bartender that evening, was spot on. She managed serving a number of tables and making drinks as well. Our group ordered and I tried the following dishes: BRAISED DUCK LEG (app) $16- good flavors BAKED CRAB CAKES (app)$18- wonderful RISOTTO $20- this was ok NEW YORK STRIP $38- cooked well although I was not a fan of the caramelized onion demi glace GRILLED BONE IN PORK CHOP $24- very tender and tasty BEET SALAD (add'l grilled chicken) $19- the salad was fresh and delicious but the chicken strips were very dry BROWN BUTTER BOURBON CAKE $8- this was ok FLOURLESS CHOCOLATE CAKE $8- it had peanut butter mousse which completely took over the taste of chocolate Overall, the place had a great vibe, beautiful interior and the rooftop heated area was a fantastic treat for cold evenings (and indoor dining restrictions). Our server took great care of our group and we had no complaints on the service from all the staff. The food, they weren't bad, I know that the ingredients were of good quality, but they were also not dishes that I would crave for nor look forward to having again. Nothing really stood out and they were not special in any way. The food portions were only good enough for one person. They were not meant to be shared, especially the appetizers. As what of the other reviewers have mentioned, all the menu items were pricey. I personally think that the dishes I have tried did not justify their prices. The ambiance was fantastic, and the food was very delicious. We had the Fig Bruschetta as a starter, and then we had Lamb shank and Steak & frites for entrees. Unfortunately, everything needed additional salt. Also, every dish of food took much longer than it should have. Took our granddaughter to lunch yesterday and enjoyed the rooftop, the pace (What a fine server Thierry is!) and the delicious food. Such great small plate options! My toast with goatcheese, fig jam, crisp prosciutto and delightfully zippy sprouts was perfect. Our grand daughter, a law student in from her native Mexico, had some salmon that she said was just what she hoped it would be! My wife's cheeseburger and fries were very satisfying. My only complaint: I didn't want a 'boozy' lunch and the list of incredibly innovative cocktails drove me nuts! But that's what 'next time' is all about! Have yet to have a bad experience. Went again by myself the other day because the weather was perfect and their patio is the best in the area. Had the arugula, pear bri flat bread. Was ok. The pears were missing something. But I still ate it all. Then I had your chicken sandwich. Superb!!! Bread was not over powering and soft. The bacon and sauce were perfection! Dessert isn't a joke either. Just wish for one more scoop if ice cream to help finish the pound cake. read more

Eager to try this place as soon as it opened up in La Grange. It definitely has a modern and elegant exterior as the building stands big on Harris. Made a reservation on Resy for a Tuesday night on the rooftop. Friendly greeters at the door.. HS kids so it's nice to have a good restaurant giving opportunities to locals. The interior is beautiful. Large rooms and beautiful bars. Looking forward to those being filled after COVID! Rooftop matches the elegance of the interior - half covered and half open tables with no cover. My girlfriends and I decided to take shade under the roof with an upcoming storm rolling through the area. Nick was our server - kind, friendly, witty, and a great sense of humor. His descriptions of the food items on the menu were so good, I swear he could sell me on buying a car tire! Nick was attentive the entire evening and we enjoyed his company every time he came and checked up on us for a refill of wine. I ordered the shrimp pasta and my friends ordered the salmon and the Elm chopped salad. I was underwhelmed with the shrimp pasta, however, I tend to be picky with my pasta tastebuds with access to great italian cooking from my italian mother. Pasta was cooked properly, but it just didn't satisfy my tastebuds. I enjoyed the large chunks of pancetta though! I kept eyeing my friend's salmon dish which looked excellent. Chopped salad... was a $20 salad. Meeehhh. I'll take pasta over salad! Finished off with deserts which were pretty good as well. They are known for their bourbon cake it seems, but it wasn't anything out of this world. Overall, the ambiance of the place looks stunning. Competitor to similar rooftop experiences in the city? Not sure, but it's nice to have a nice rooftop in the western suburbs. I felt the menu was small; not many options. Not sure if this is due to COVID or just a new restaurant trying to get their straps under their belt. I debated between 3 or 4 stars but sill admit, Nick swooned me with his personality and service so he saved me a star. Such a great restaurant that helps build a sense of community! Food and drinks are good, decor is elevated and they host a variety of events that give us good reason to stay in the neighborhood, and help each visit feel novel. We attended a comedy show that was phenomenal. Our friends and I bought tickets individually and were originally set farther apart but they happily accommodated for us to sit closer. We had the crab cakes to start & they were super meaty. You will not be disappointed. We decided to order different tapas including spicy birria bao buns & ancho braised pork belly tacos. I met a friend who lives in the suburbs out in LaGrange for a girl's lunch. It was easy for me to drive out from the city and simple for her to just head north. I had never been to this nice town and was very impressed by all the great boutiques and restaurants. Just off the main street on Harris is a stunning spot called The Elm. There is convenient street parking as well as two huge parking lots nearby. I was so surprised to find out the parking was complimentary. The dark and stylish exterior looked great. I could see outdoor rooftop dining from the street. Greenery and flowers added detail that made this business look nicely finished. As we walked in, the room was a gorgeous mix of vintage, mid-century and urban flare. Penny tile, subway tile and leather furniture created a dramatic first impression. The large bar, grand staircase and relaxing seating area were impressive. The hostesses were very nice. We opted for indoor dining and were seated right away. Our server promptly came over and took great care of us from start to finish. I tried a watermelon specialty cocktail and loved it. We decided to order several appetizers or small plates so we could try several things. I'm so glad we went that route. Everything was more than delicious! The Sesame Salmon Wontons, Lobster Fritters, Baked Crab Cakes and Crispy Tofu were so good I'm still thinking about them. I must say, when I first walked in. the look made me think they would have great cocktails and mediocre food. Boy, was I wrong! Had dinner with a group of 10 December 14. The room was decorated beautifully for the holidays, but was way too loud for conversation. The food was not warm enough when it was served, but if anyone wanted or needed to send it back, too bad. Not a single server was to be seen for at least half an hour after the food was delivered to ask how things were. I believe that restaurants should only accept reservations that their staff can actually take care of them. Clearly, they had way too many diners for the number of staff. The food might have been ok had it not been cold, but who knows. But the fact that we were totally ignored just really irked me and our group. I will not be going back. Too bad, I've had good experiences there before, but the quality has truly slipped. read more

The Elm is amazing place! Their decor inside the restaurant is fantastic, and it's well-planned. I went out for drinks with a friend and enjoyed them although I didn't eat. We were given a guided tour by the hospitable owner around the lovely venue meant for hosting private events. With respect to the taste, the cuisines are lovely and similarly the drinks that we tasted. The place is neat with a touch of friendliness in it. Spending my leisure on the rooftop during a sunny day is what I cherish most. Even as this is a good place, I feel bad for not booking for a rooftop table. read more

I wasn't impressed. Our server wasn't very attentive. We didn't get rooftop seating, so I can't comment on that. I had a heavy (greasy) lunch, so I ordered their soup of the day: chicken noodle soup. The broth was flavorful but it had NO meat or noodles. Nor was I given complementary bread or crackers with my bowl! They gave me some rosemary crackers and it didn't complement the soup, although good. I came here after a recommendation from my boss. As I walked in the hostess stand had a plastic shield and all staff were wearing masks. The restaurant had cute bottles of hand sanitizer all around. It appeared that they were limiting the number of tables inside. However, I sat outside and the rooftop was packed. Most of the guests were at there table. However there were some groups that were just allowing their toddlers to wander around. They have nice little fire pits as well. The service was fast and attentive. The crab cakes were flavorful. My friend got the risotto and she enjoyed it. They have a decent cocktail and wine list, but I did not try any on this visit. Prices were reasonable for the amount of food you get. Just ate here for the second time. They have my favorite gin cocktail, On Broker's Thyme. Had the fig bruschetta as an app ...yum. I ordered the veal chops with saffron rice and pomegranate sauce and they were great. I really like the ambiance of this place and will definitely be going back...hopefully this summer so I can hang out in the rooftop bar. read more

The place is big and airy and sports a nice 2nd flr. Windows are large and open on nice days and there is a small, all outdoor area as well. Food- i thought the offerrings were just ok but overpriced. I ordered crab cakes. 1 order consisted of 2 (3 oz) crab cakes for 22.00. Pretty small. This offering was from the small plates section. Nothing else on the plate other thn a bit of sauce. The crab cakes were so-so. Not much taste to them & i dont have smokers taste buds, lol. I ordered ordered a focacia bread that was smaller than i thought it would be. The little round loaf was the size of a large bagel. 6.00. My friend had French onion soup which she said was good and was 6.00, and it was a bowl. A grilled chicken sandwich or cheeseburger is priced at 16.00. All sandwiches come with fries or fruit. Ambiance- the upstairs place is very noisy. There weren't many ppl but it was tough having a conversation. Not sure about the acoustics downstairs. Service- it was ok but not attentive enough. I had to ask for more ice tea from a passing server. Our server was also bartending. Then he couldn't seem to get our bills straight. It was only the 2 of us.
