Located off of Valley Blvd in Wood-Ridge, this is the second time I have ordered from the Empanada Shop since they have opened. I have to say that the empanadas were delicious, tasty, flavorful and didn't disappoint. The establishment is nicely set up and they cook their empanadas in small batches so that they are always fresh. They also have nice lunch combo special. Greeted by Devon today who assisted me with a great selection to choose from. I had gotten beef empanada, chicken and mozzarella cheese, chicken, spinach and cheese, fiesta (vegetarian) containing rice, beans, corn, cheese, peppers, + onions) and buffalo chicken. They were bursting with well spiced fillings and have a nice flavor to them. They didn't skimp on ingredients here and they were so well fried out. Every bite had a nice snap to it. So I have gitten take out from here about 4 times and frankly for me that was 3 times too many. But I am still giving this place 3 stars because my son & his friend both like it. The ingredients taste fresh but I do not their flavor profiles. In every thing I tried there was something off. The chicken empanadas to me taste like the chicken was ground in a blender to a baby food consistency. I prefer Shredded chicken or chopped chicken. And I absolutely hated the sausage and peppers empanada because the flavors were too sharp together. It tasted freshly thrown together like sauce which still needs to simmer for a while. This last time I tried this place I threw my food away after a bite or two. I made a salad because I found their flavors and textures off. Hello Fellow Yelpers! I was so excited to try the Empanada Shop - the only other establishment I know of like this is located in Hoboken NJ. My boyfriend and I popped in here on a Sunday afternoon and just our luck we found street parking right in front of their building. We ordered two chicken and two beef empanadas with a side of fries. The two chicken empanadas were a big soggy, but they tasted great! On the other hand, the beef empanadas we ordered were disgusting - I took one bite and threw it out. We have been going to the Empanada shop for several years. My last visit was a let down. I had not been here for a bit and was looking forward to grabbing some empanadas and rice and beans to take out for a quick dinner. Well that turned out not to be the case. First they did not have the Sausage and pepper empandas. Or the Shrimp empanadas. OK no big deal there's other options. So I ordered 4 other varities. I ordered rice and bean sides and was shocked when she told me they did not have either. What? 6 PM on a Saturday night and no rice and no beans? Why? How? Supply chain shortages? I ran several kitchens in restaurants for 15 years and sometimes when vendors shorted our orders we bit the bullet and went to the "grocery store" to purchase the ingredients so we had the menu items for our customers. Not great for food cost, but customer satisfaction is key here? Is it not? All I got in response to "why?" was a shrug. I guess they have become one of the ever growing "you'll get what we have" establishments that have grown in numbers since the pandemic. One of the best empanadas I've had in a while, I live in Paterson where you can buy a wide varieties of empanadas from different countries but none are as good as this place. I had 1 of each: beef, chicken and cheese. I'm on the fence about this place. Although I like having an emanada shop nearby, I think the food is just okay. I've tried several different varieties of empanadas here. The spinach and mozzarella, sausage peppers and onions, guava and cheese, three cheese blend and the apple pie. While the selection is vast and the size of the emanadas is impressive, it just doesn't wow me in the taste buds. The meat empanadas were greasy and the desert empanadas were too sweet. My favorite so far was probably the three cheese blend. One thing I did like was that the skin tasted nice and crunchy. I mean I didn't expect it to taste authentic, which it doesn't, but I did expect a fresh tasting item. I feel like these empanadas taste similar to frozen food or store bought items. But nonetheless, it is a new business in town and getting one every once in while does serve as a good appetizer or a dessert with another meal. I don't think I can eat more than one of these at a time. The price is decent $3 or so, for each empanada given the size. read more

Buffalo chicken empanadas were dry today. The regular chicken was better. I'm not sure how long they were sitting out for. My wife loves the guava and cheese. Surprisingly, the mango madness smoothie was filling and substantial. We'll be back again to try some others. read more

They are new so I am going to rank this place purely based on how good their empanada is. Their empanada is average. It is not the most amazing one I've had but it is also not the worst. The pork one is a bit salty. I think the best one for me is the beef empanada. We've also ordered the sweet potato fries and rice and beans. Rice and beans were subpar and the rice tasted like left over rice. Sweet potato fries were great but they put it in a plastic container, if we didn't eat it right away it would of been soggy. The smoothies were decent (ahola is the better one) - freshly blended. While the rating does not reflect their service - I need to state how disorganized they were. We ordered 2 combo meals (2 empanadas with a side) and they wrote my order down on a ticket front and back. Yep! you guessed it! They did not flip over the ticket hence they only had 1/2 of my order. There were also way too many people behind the counter. I was waiting for them to collide with each other. It also seems that they do not keep stock on what empanadas to make when they run low. So you have a bunch of customers waiting for their order. One guy came in for a pick up and they had no clue what he was talking about. I don't know if I'll come back here after such a night. Thank goodness they are all ready to go in the warmers and piping hot and delicious. I tried the chicken, beef, sausage peppers and onions, and the buffalo chicken. They were all amazing!!!! They also had a Cuban sandwich on the menu that was also delicious, I stole a bite from my friend and was immediately jealous I didn't order it. I did leverage half of my sausage and peppers and half my buffalo chicken Empanada for the last half of the sandwich which worked out perfect. The shop is on a strip next to a lot of other restaurants with street parking in front. Everything seemed clean and they have smoothies as well as some other items on the menu. I would say the empanadas were underwhelming and so was my smoothie. The taste is far from authentic and overpriced in comparison to other similar shops I've been to. First let me start by saying I LOVE empanadas. Whenever I see it on a menu I always try them. A friend told me about Empanada Shop and I had to give them a shot. I thought the beef was amazing, solid flavor but not overpowering. But it was overstuffed... they give you alot of meat! Spinach was even better and highly recommended but I think my overall favorite was the Fiesta, which was unexpected. Perfect blend of rice, beans, corn and cheese. So the food is great, reasonably priced and I think the last thing that amazed me was that my fingers were NOT greasy after eating them. Sometimes you even just smell like grease after eating empanadas but not at the Empanada Shop. I also tried the berry smoothie which I never thought of pairing with an empanada and it works well! Oh, last thing I forgot was that my son has food allergies and they did a great job assuring me that their empanadas were egg and nut free. Going back tomorrow to try the other flavors. My favorite is beef as they stuff it to the max and very flavorful. My daughter got the 3 cheese which was oozing mounds of cheese! The sausage and peppers was tasty too. The empanadas are delicious! There are so many options, and they're all crispy and brown and delicious. I had the beef, pork, and apple cinnamon empanadas. They were so good they left me wanting more. The apple cinnamon empanada tasted better than most apple pies, but with a crisp crunch of the empanada. I've been looking for a great empanada place since I came back from Puerto Rico last March and I finally found it! I got the beef empanadas and they were so good I bought more to bring home. Definitely, definitely, definit recommend. Update: I just recently visited their Rutherford location and it's even cuter! This time I tried their rice bowls in addition to my usual beef and buffalo chicken empanadas. I have to say, the beans in the rice bowls taste so delicious and authentic, rice bowls might be a new staple for me whenever I visit!
