We had a great dinner at The Exchange tonight. Four of us shared deviled eggs, truffle fries and asparagus as appetizers. All very tasty. Then we had braised short rib, mushroom bolognese, burger and the chopped wedge salad. For dessert, Chocolate birthday cake. I highly recommend the short ribs. The potatoes were great too. The service was very quick, everyone was incredibly nice, and the inside was very cute. This was attached to the Restoration Hotel, with a parking garage out back that was super convenient. For the price, I was a little underwhelmed with the pork chop. It was good but I wasn't blown away, especially with the cabbage and grits. Ordered here off Uber eats as it sounded delightful and light. Definitely light and fresh but left me wanting more. For $30 I'm not so sure what happened other than a bunch of lettuce. The Caesar with trout definitely had essence of trout but no trout in sight. Was already super wilted and lackluster. Super small in size. The flavor was pretty legit though The summer salad was bigger (paid for a larger size) and fresh. Too much dressing and huge clumps of goat cheese. Nice nuts and berries but something that kept getting stuck in my throat- a bit of toughness and spice. Needed protein for sure. Should have skipped the other salad and added protein to the bigger one. I'd like to go back and try brunch. read more

OOOOF. OK, first things first - this restaurant only opened about three weeks ago. So it's possible they are still getting some other kinks worked out. I was here for my birthday dinner. In terms of the physical space, it's definitely a very cool/modern/chic vibe however, there are some issues with the design. First of all, the chairs are too low for the tables, so it was a weird height situation in terms of eating. That wasn't a huge deal, but it was annoying. The bigger issue really is that it's an incredibly loud space. There's no carpet or anything to absorb sound. The restaurant was less than half full, and it was extremely loud and difficult to have a conversation. Our waitress was extremely nice and helpful, but hadn't been well trained on the menu, and was unable to answer our questions. Again, they had just recently opened, but we did notice this as a service issue. The food... Was a mess. Two of us had ordered fish. The trout had no flavor at all, and the fish of the day (flounder) was a weird mishmash of flavors that really didn't go well together. I personally ordered the flounder and left half of it on my plate. It just wasn't tasty at all. Kinda weirdly sweet and sour and the flavors didn't work or mesh. Thumbs down for the fish. Our table also ordered the steak, and a burger. The steak wasn't particularly tender, and the burger was just so-so. Okay, but not exceptional or memorable. The wine was EXPENSIVE. $75 for a bottle that should have cost half that. Zero mocktail options. When I asked the waitress if they were able to make me a NA drink, she said that if I had a recipe with specific ingredients, she could give it to the bartender, but they don't have any particular offerings. Kinda disappointing. So Diet Coke it was. Safe to say, my birthday dinner ended up being a disappointment. I was looking forward to this new restaurant, and I've heard fun things about the rooftop bar, but this isn't it. read more

Uncle Thom and I ventured out the new Restoration Hotel on Patton Avenue in downtown Asheville to eat lunch at their restaurant called The Exchange. I wish there were 10 stars available for The Exchange!! From the absolutely gorgeous interior decor, the extremely friendly staff and the delicious, craveable food...this place would be deserving of all 10 stars!! To start, we took a few moments to enjoy the well-chosen design aspects throughout the hotel lobby and The Exchange restaurant. Very classy, yet comfortable at the same time. For food, we decided to share two dishes. The Braised Portobello Grilled Cheese with Fries and the Pork Belly Cuban Sandwich with a Spring Salad. Loved the spicy mustard kick on the Cuban sandwich and the pickles helped to cool down that delicious mustard! Now, on to the Braised Portobello Grilled Cheese - IT IS TO DIE FOR!!!! Cannot emphasize enough how fantastic the flavors were on this sandwich. At one point I looked at Thom, he was gazing at the grilled cheese like he wanted to be alone with it at home :) It has Boursin cheese, which is soft and melts beautifully amongst the marinated mushrooms. After we devoured our meal, we headed up the elevator to The Observatory. The bar area was closed but we had a chance to walk out on the rooftop deck. This is a special, special place! read more

As with the other lower review I will lead with saying they are a new restaurant and I will give them a second shot after a little time has passed to see if these issues are simply because they are so new. When we went they were not overly busy Drinks took a while to come out (ordered a bottle of wine and a beer) apps came out and then two bites in the entrees were served Ambiance is lovely!! Such a beautiful new restaurant big bright windows & super clean and crisp feeling Food: started with the charcuterie board which was the best thing we have, generous portions on it. & lusty monk is a fantastic mustard! I got the cavatelli pasta, for $13 bucks, it was what you payed for...says cream sauce but it was extremely thin more like broth, lacking flavor completely, no lemon notes, shaved radish were just chunks...was pretty meh. My husband had the burger, the fries were awesome & crispy, burger was flavorful but came out medium well when asked for medium rare. A reservations was made over a month ago for a small party (25 people) for New Years eve dinner. The service was extremely slow and the food was not great. Over an hour to ORDER the food - then the first table was served 30 minute's after that, but - the remaining guests received their meals sporadically over the next 90 MINUTES with some meals being completed forgot. I can't speak for many of the meals but the Short Ribs were nothing like the picture in YELP (which looked great) - more like mac & cheese with minimal beef and no vegetables to be seen. In fact, I was sure it was just the wrong order and complained but my waitress said it was in fact the Short Ribs and the turnips were in there?? The mushroom and caramelized onion flat bread was also pitiful with a couple mushrooms and even less onion. read more

Superb! 3 of us came in for lunch on a rainy Tuesday afternoon. The environment is lovely, the service was top notch, and the food was delicious. The burger portions were modest, but the portion of fries was so huge I brought home half my burger. The pork belly sandwich was even better than the burgers, and the deviled eggs were fantastic. I really don't post a lot, but I had to make a statement about my experience at the Exchange. My husband and I walked in and sat at at the bar after being told that we would be able to order from the whole menu. By the way, the website indicated that they could accept reservations throughout the whole night (we learned this was erroneous). I kid do not; we watched the bartenders interact with the people sitting on either side of us as we waited for 20 minutes. We did get to observe-- a customer asked a bartender for their coworker's name so she could deliver a compliment- to which she was responded to incredibly rudely. We waited and waited and after being ignored and watching the other customers' experience, we went elsewhere. Avoid. read more

A find. Fortunately as we've not been all that impressed with the Asheville food scene (too much going on, chaos on a plate at best, overcooked served lukewarm is not unusual). The setting is extremely well done, our compliments to the designers/decorators. Acoustics were tame, at least where we sat in the main dining room. Service was excellent, our lovely server was real and actually knew the menu! We started with the deviled eggs and a flatbread. Followed those with a duck based soup and trout on forbidden rice. We've tried twice. The first time we tried the rooftop bar and restaurant and were told that the kitchen was open till eight. We got there at 7:30. No one came to take our order for quite a while, and when she finally did it was 10 till eight. We ordered our food and then she came back about 15 minutes later and said 'sorry the kitchen is closed'. We were then told by the general manager who asked to see us when we told the concierge downstairs) that he was really angry because their kitchen was actually open until 9 o'clock upstairs. He tried to give us a comp meal, but my husband refused. He just told them do better. It's four weeks later, and we went back tonight after seeing a play downtown. This time we went to the downstairs (main) restaurant, asked are you sure that you're open?...they said yes we are open until 11! We had arrived at a few minutes before 10. The waiter was extremely nice and helpful, we ordered our food, asked to make sure that what we were ordering was simple enough to make since it was on the later side, and also ordered two drinks. He was so kind and friendly and my husband said to me 'this is the way it supposed to be...I'm glad we came back.' 10 minutes later, a woman came over to our table and said I'm so sorry there has been a miscommunication and the kitchen is...closed. My husband doesn't get mad. Hardly ever. The gal followed us outside because she could tell he was upset and tried to again comp a meal and asked us to please try again. We both said thank you but no. It's a beautiful restaurant. I don't know what the deal is with their kitchen staff. They are leaving their wait staff in the lurch. Hopefully they can find some people that want to actually have a restaurant open that serves food to people. I feel bad for the waiter. read more

DO NOT recommend. I had family in town and decided to check out with them the new rooftop spot. Big mistake! There was a handful of us, so we sat at the spacious lounge area. The server comes in and the first thing they say is "Just so you know, the bartenders don't let us take your drink orders because they want those tips. We can only take your food order". WHAT?!?! You're telling me this can't be handled behind the curtains so the customers can be served? I end of having to take everyone's order on my phone, place it at the bar - not knowing if I have to carry my own drinks at that point. The food order was forgotten and arrived cold. Once we try to close our tab (at the bar, because the servers can't do that for you either..) we're given a tab that buckets all the food and only detailed the drinks. I asked for an itemized bill and the bartender, irritated, tells me to find a calculator. He was arrogant and rude. We had TERRIBLE experience and will never go back. The dishes were not cleared from the table, drinks took 45 minutes to an hour to get, water glasses were not refilled and our server was often nowhere to be found. Had I not had the benefit of great company with me, instead of a 3 star, this would have been a 1 star. Even the manager recognized the poor service and checked on our table making up for the poor skills of our server. Don't sit at the bar if you are typically a bar person. $30 old fashion was made in a metal tin??? Got 2 appetizers and took 20-30 minutes. Waiting for food wasn't an issue but going to close out the bartender didn't even have our drinks in the system or food in after he had already "ran our card to start a tab" (really didn't) and had to grab our card again. When leaving the one bartender says to the other "I think it's time for a shot" (unprofessional infront of guests to say the least) BUT AFTER TERRIBLE SERVICE WAS GIVEN?? Sit at a table is my one suggestion! Working in the service industry as well and knowing what to expect, this disappoints me!!
