Surgeon was great but the management needs an overhaul. My story is below: The Eye Care Group in Connecticut has recently canceled my son as a patient due to an outstanding invoice of $104. My son has been with this group since elementary school, undergoing surgery and numerous follow-up appointments, with out-of-pocket and insurance billing likely exceeding $10,000. He has been healthy for a while but has recently complained of blurred vision. Given his rare genetic disorder, Glut 1 deficiency, we take all health concerns seriously. When we called to schedule an appointment, we were informed that he was "discontinued" because of this invoice, which we do not recall receiving. To our knowledge, they did not reach out to resolve this issue directly. Over the years, we have spent countless hours in their waiting and exam rooms, sometimes waiting up to four hours past our appointment time. My time and my son's time are valuable. As an industry professional with three decades of experience in designing and manufacturing Ophthalmic goods, I have worked alongside top-tier professionals who would not condone this treatment of patients. At what point do we demand a higher level of respect as patients and customers? We have no recourse for the wasted hours due to their scheduling issues--time that could have been spent running my business to cover their bills. Now, my son, who has special needs, is left to see an unfamiliar doctor who does not know him or his condition. I wonder what would happen if all healthcare professionals "discontinued" their patients over a $104 invoice. This reflects a troubling trend of prioritizing profit over people, and I am disappointed in the direction healthcare is heading. read more

This practice is not what it use to be! You have to go to a separate contact lense guy (John) who just makes up codes and charges you for a level 3 exam ($125) when your contact lenses are discontinued. The point of the fitting is to make sure the contacts fit well and if not then trade them out. Management needs to be on top of billing in this office. read more

This is the most organized, efficient, and friendly eye clinic i have ever been to. the staff is so kind and takes the time to talk you through everything, very short wait times, and big clean waiting rooms. read more

This place is so badly unorganized. I don't know why one appt for an eye exam would take nearly 2.5 hours to complete. They are so greedy with over booking appts. Don't come here. There are better places to go. read more

I work here, so I am EXTREMELY biased, but.... What an amazing practice. These are specialists, medical doctors, ophthalmologists... not optometrists. This is a multi-specialty practice; we have retina, plastics, neuro-ophthalmology, pediatrics, glaucoma, cornea, and comprehensive ophthalmology. The doctors actually care about you and will spend time with you. If you find you're waiting a while, it's most likely because the doctor is spending a little more time with someone who needs it. Try to be understanding. Full service optical shops in each location. read more

The Eye Care Group and Dr. Nguyen should be avoided at all cost. I accidentally put poisonous fungicide in my eyes this morning instead of my glaucoma drops. Realizing what I had done I immediately called, explained emergency and requested call back. Was told by his nursing assistant he would call back this afternoon after he stopped seeing patients! I was blown away by the low reviews for this place. I called with an eye problem at 10am, was seen at 11am and was out by noon with all of my problems and concerns fully addressed. The providers are competent, compassionate and efficient. Alex and the other ladies who were working the front desk were pleasant, thorough and diligent in solving billing problems I have been having. I had an appointment for 8:15am and I arrived at 8:00am. The staff took me into a room and I was still waiting for the doctor to arrive and now it's 9:05am. The wait time was unacceptable so I left that office without seeing the doctor. I have to commute to work and any time I miss from work I need to make up the time I lost. Don't make appointments for people who are employed as their time is just as important. I will find another eye care group that can stick to their schedules and that don't overbook patients. I was extremely unhappy with their service and I will inform my insurance company not to pay any invoice for non-service. read more

Flustered front desk person greets us in the snow saying we don't open until 9. Most medical offices open a few min early. and staff that is impersonal and borderline snotty. Staff congregating in the halls while patients are walking through, okay very professional... office is old and dirty looking... and the grand finale: Dr insults his patients. I have no issues with the staff- they are always wonderful however I was shocked and disgusted to find out they have a new policy of charging $25 to fill out FMLA or similar paperwork. When you have eye surgery and cannot drive it's not like you have a choice about FMLA if you want to keep your job so they have you right where they want you. By far, the most unprofessional and mismanaged medical practice I've ever been to (Southbury location). They keep patients (many of them elderly) sitting for hours in between "exams." Which surely are sent to insurance companies. The "staff" in the particular practice in Southbury is horrible. There's a lot of "gabbing" and nonsensical banter going on, versus attending to patient's needs. Won't get into particulars, but in the space of one week, my elderly mother has spent 6+ hours in this joint ... two of them because they screwed up a procedure and "allowed" her to squeeze in for a follow up... ended walking out. I waited over an hour for the doctor to show, first appointment of the day, I arrived 15 minutes early. After an hour, I asked the staff where doctor was , after some beating around the bush they admitted he wasn't there yet. I asked when he would arrive and they seemed quite irritated with the question. The staff was defensive and seemed incredulous that I would ask. They said , "well we told you it's a 2 1/2 hour appointment". - apparently what they meant is "be there for 2 1/2 hours we will get to you when we feel like it". read more

I have been treated at the The Eye Care Group for 2 detached retinas, one in each eye 2 months apart. The 1st time I went, I was diagnosed by DR Skylar in the morning and he suggested I get the Cryro surgery done the same day, so I waited 2 hours or more for his availability to perform the surgery. It was a 4 to 5 hour affair, most of which was waiting for the eyes to dilate and the affects of the Novocain, - yes I had to get the needle in the eye for Cryro, but I am glad I got it over with. The second time I went a month later after experiencing similar symptoms in my left eye, I saw Dr Sugin, she performed the Laser surgery to repair the tear, that was about 2 to 3 hour affair. The followup visits I was in and out in about an hour. I think the Doctors at this practice are highly skilled, pretty friendly and caring. The reason for the long waits is that they often perform emergency surgeries which throws off their schedule. I believe there could be a better way to manage this....perhaps have all the emergencies done later in the day if possible. I believe they are very competent Doctors and would recommend this practice for those who have serious eye problems, they do care. I don't think they are after the money, their fees are reasonable and worked out a payment plan so I can pay over time. Only reason I gave 3 stars is the because of the long waits and the disorganization in the busy office. read more

Can't say enough good about Dr Sugin!! She repaired my detached retina with terrific results. All the office personnel as well as the assistants were appropriate. I was seen immediately when sent by my regular optometrist. Several follow up appt. were needed and I always was seen in a reasonable amount of time. Would highly recommend Dr Sugin read more

First time there I have one free eye exam every year. Scheduled an appointment for a basic eye exam as a new patient. They did nothing special did not treat me for anything just a regular exam. Because they said I had a previous medical condition (i scratched my cornia a long time ago which i told them at the end of the visit) they coded it as medical not an eye exam and charged me $220 dollars. They did absolutely nothing outside of a regular eye exam I referred people here and regret it if they are to get a bill and not told before hand. This should be illegal and I have never had this happen during a routine eye exam. I will be fighting this tooth and nail and telling everyone I know about my experience. I would have never ever went to them if I knew this. read more

My wife was seen right away and had a visual field test done. After that she had to wait for an hour and a half before the Doctor saw her, we would have waited longer if I did not block the hallway with her wheelchair. Everyone said that they were sorry, but offered no solution. When I asked to talk to someone, I got someone on the phone that only inflamed the situation. I am appalled at Todays experience. Originally the first doctor I saw was thorough, helpful, competent, and compassionate. When I was referred to anther doctor in this same practice I had the same expectations of the doctor. These expectations were immediately dashed by the doctor I met for the first time today. She was arrogant, rude, did not listen to a single question, contradicted herself on at least 5 occasions in the same conversation. When this was pointed out to her she emphatically stated "I did not and have never contradicted myself". She is the least compassionate person I have ever met. She did not acknowledge my other health conditions and unexpectedly performed another diagnostic with out discussing the process with me first and set off an episode of extreme vertigo. She did not apologize or even ask how I was feeling. As I was leaving and making the follow up appointment she came out to the reception desk demanded to talk to me in private, accused me of calling her a name and told me she did. not want to be my doctor. I agreed I don't need a bully as a doctor. She bullied me through out the appointment today, treated me as if I was uneducated, and was disrespectful. I had a friend with me and my friend agreed she is incompetent, could only repeat her standard memorized information and when my questions deviated from her scripted dialogue she bullied me and became enraged and condescending. I strongly recommend no one be subjected to the unprofessional bullying of Dr. S.Sugin. read more

I called and asked if they take my insurance. The woman was extremely short with me and told me only if I didn't purchase it on the exchange. I was trying to clarify and she told me she couldn't answer the question for me. She was extremely rude and I am upset that they would discriminate based on how you purchased your insurance and also not happy I now have to find a new doctor. You would think they would treat anyone - especially an existing patient - with a little more kindness. read more
