The service was as expected, friendly and polite. I ordered the Akita with Chicken and sweet potato fries and Chicken Tenders and fries for my daughter. However, it was the smallest piece of chicken, a slice of pineapple from a can and barely enough Cole slaw to cover up the bottom of the bun! The sweet potato fries were good and got plenty of those. The chicken fingers were typical frozen and fried. For the price, it wasn't worth it! They have a decent menu with unique ingredients, just hoped for better. Great spot near UMaine campus. We were able to sit outside with our dog and enjoy lunch. The mimosas were the best deal in town! I truly appreciate the dog friendly environment!! Two of us had hot dogs and one had the breakfast burger, all enjoyed their food as well as beer and a coffee frappe. Onion rings and fries were great as well. One of my favorite spots in Orono, The Family Dog features something for everyone, four-legged or otherwise. This gourmet hotdog establishment cooks up beef hot dogs, black bean hot dogs and burgers as well as chicken and beef burgers. They have a wide-range of options all named after different dog breeds. My personal favorite is the Havanese or the Xolo (sho-lo) which feature sun-dried tomato, roasted garlic, basil and goat cheese spread with chopped lecture and garlic aioli or avocado salsa spread sprinkled with fresh, diced tomato, chopped lettuce, pepper jack cheese and southwest mayo. Their fries are crispy and delicious. Don't forget to try a shake or an ice cream (get the Confused Dog which is just an assortment of all your favorite candy bars mixed together). I love the many taps of great rotating local beers. Often the Family Dog will host tap takeovers where local breweries can showcase their products, but typically there is a good variety on tap both inside and at their patio bar. One of the coolest parts of the Family Dog occurs in summer where they do Friday movie nights and project Classic movies on a big blow-up screen on their newly renovated patio, complete with grass and tall-top seating. Sometimes the food truck, The Stray Dog, will even make an appearance (don't miss the truffle popcorn). I've been a customer here since their opening in 2012. It has always been a "go-to" place for a family friendly meal, fun atmosphere, and ice cream for dessert! In more recent times, the prices have increased (as per everywhere), so it is no longer all that affordable for the entire family. I find myself paying almost $10.00 a person for a hot dog and fries. For that money, I'd rather go somewhere with a nicer atmosphere. A great group of student employees work there - so friendly and accommodating! I have noticed, however, that the owner's son is incredibly rude to customers, including myself. On multiple occasions, he has used profanity (including the F-word) and expressed that he doesn't give an "F" about the customers. He appears to be irritated and angry when my kids order ice creams. His demeanor is passive aggressive and snarky. He made a remark to me that came across as "food shaming", suggesting that I had poor eating habits and perhaps shouldn't be ordering ice cream. I always chalked it up to being a busy stressful environment during the school year. This place can get rowdy if there's some sort of event or sports game happening, and with all the college kids munching, the Family Dog isn't an ideal family restaurant. It's more like a laid-back hang out joint. I highly recommend the black bean xolo burger, or whatever the daily special is. The cooks there really know what they're doing! I literally just got massively hungry thinking about their onion rings. This is another restaurant in a list of great new places that have popped up in Orono since I graduated 5 years ago (because the good stuff always comes once you leave). Fam Dog is always a solid choice for a quick family bite. The kids meals are great and there are lots of tasty options. However, I have some pretty serious concerns about the customer service. The young man who evidently owns/manages the establishment seems to have some "issues" to say the least. I am curious what is going on with him to treat loyal customers in this fashion. On numerous occasions, he has been downright rude to me, my spouse, and kids. We have encountered him making snarky remarks about our food choices. He made my wife feel uncomfortable about ordering an ice cream, perhaps suggesting she was overweight - which is absolutely not the case whatsoever. She runs marathons for heavens sake! Aside from this comment, he made multiple eye rolls, doesn't speak, and seems irritated that we are even in his presence. I honestly don't know what we did to get on his bad side! I'd like to continue to visit, but am skeptical to even set foot in the place in fear he will be working. Side note: the other staff members are polite, sweet, and accommodating. The Family Dog is a great option for a hangover-beating brunch (or lunch). You will be surrounded by college kids, so as long as that's not a problem for you, this place is worth a visit. I ordered a breakfast sandwich on a bagel (came with side of home fries), and it was just what I was looking for - nothing fancy or crazy, but just simple, well-cooked breakfast food. My husband enjoyed his burger as well. The inside area here is fairly small (glad we were able to snag a table - a lot of kids were still on school break, so that may have played a factor). However, apparently they open up the outdoor area in nicer weather for various events, movie screenings, etc. - I can totally see how this place would be a popular hangout for the local UMaine students. The guy who took my order (this place is counter service) didn't really know what was going on when I presented him with the Yelp check-in coupon on my phone - but he was friendly about it and happy to accept it. It would be great though if staff was briefed on things like this, as I'm sure it's confusing for them to be getting shown coupons / offers that they have no idea about! Bonus: They have Powerade in their soda fountain machine which comes in handy if you are indeed here for a hangover-beating brunch. A can't miss place for brunch, lunch, dinner, or late night. The selection of burgers, black bean burgers, sweet potato fries, local beer selection, chili, Sunday brunch, and steak and cheese are all recommended staples that this place simply nails consistently. Our favorite part is that The Dog is one of those unique restaurants that is great for a wide range of groups and events: Friday drinks, a casual dinner with family and friends, a larger group gathering, or a nice higher-end brunch. Their range of foods (great casual options for families with higer-end twists for foodies) and seating options (large group tables, smaller personal tables, outdoor/indoor seating) really make this an all-purpose stop that you look forward to. Service can be slow at times though we usually don't mind because we're here with family or friends to visit (and have come to expect the wait) and the biggest issue with the previous ownership (consistently dirty tables) seems to have been solved with new ownership.
