Mediocre food combined with poor service means a very disappointing dining experience. First and last time I will go there.

The building is somewhat unassuming, but the interior is well decorated and provides a suitable level of elegance that supports the menu! The food is excellent! Two of our party had the black angel hair pasta with crab, one had the snow pea salad, and I had the black lobster ravioli! For entreés, two had the escalope of veal, one had the roast duck, and I had the veal chop! Beautiful presentation, excellent flavors, and there was not a bite left on any of our plates! Making the experience even better - Bunha Faun is a BYO restaurant! I pulled two bottles from my cellar that paired perfectly with our meals - a Pinot Noir with appetizers and a 100 point Cabernet Franc with our entrées. A perfect night at a very special restaurant!!!

Even if you've dined here a number of times, it still somehow manages to slip under your culinary radar... And that is truly a shame, as this diminutive Main Line mainstay has so much to offer. The unassuming exterior notwithstanding, the restaurant's interior is attractively and tastefully appointed. And the cuisine - French fare with an Asian flair - is consistently lovingly prepared and beautifully but simply presented. One glance at the Snow Pea Salad, for example, and you realize that the food here is really something special. When it comes to ingredients, the dish is the soul of simplicity... snow peas, mushrooms, and a splash of sesame dressing. But the constituents are arranged so artfully - the snow peas fanned about an epicenter of sliced mushrooms - that the presentation succeeds in beguiling the eye as well as the palate. The more seasonal Asparagus Salad - spears caressed by a wafer-thin carrot sheath in pools of sherry vinaigrette - is just as photogenic and equally delicious... As was my starter, Oriental Noodles tossed with sesame dressing topped with slivers of chicken and crushed peanuts surrounded by alternating snippets of carrots and broccoli. Simple but sublime. This is obviously a kitchen at the very top of its game. My dining partner, however, would be quick to tell you that nothing quite measured up to the Escargot. Baked in garlic butter, served on a bed of spinach, and topped with Swiss cheese, it was both incredibly rich and extraordinarily delicious. Not to be missed. Just be sure to postpone your next cholesterol test. When it comes to entrées, the Sautéed Barramundi is an uncommonly special treat. Because of its firm moist texture and sweet, buttery flavor - somewhat akin to halibut and grouper - it has quickly become the darling of seafood lovers and confirmed carnivores alike... Even people who don't like seafood tend to like barramundi. Bunha Faun's kitchen prepares it with a slightly unusual but extremely subtle ginger scallion sauce... The result is simply extraordinary. Although my dining partner enjoys finny fare, she much prefers shellfish, which have been her entrées of choice during several visits. She definitely enjoyed the Sautéed Shrimp and Scallops. These were served up with artichoke hearts and mushrooms in a Champagne cream sauce. And, yes... the dish was exceedingly rich. But even better, in her opinion, was the choice during our most recent visit, the Sweet Red Pepper Shrimp. Companioned by a very nice rice pilaf and sautéed green beans, the perfectly prepared crustaceans were decorously anointed with an exquisite red pepper sauce that was just sweet enough to complement rather than smother the objects of its affection. If I had to choose my favorite entrée, however, my nod would certainly go to the delectable Escalope of Veal. I have sampled numerous variations on the theme over the years, but Bunha Faun's kitchen turns out something that is really quite special. For starters, the veal is pounded nearly wafer-thin and is incredibly tender. Then, of course, there is that utterly addictive white wine sauce aided and abetted by wild mushrooms and prosciutto. And it is undoubtedly the prosciutto - and its irresistibly sweet/salty countenance - that propels this dish into an entirely unique and exciting flavor dimension. If Bunha Faun has a low point culinarily, it continues to be their desserts. With the exception of the Crème Brûlée (which was absent from the menu the evening of our most recent visit), the usual suspects are trucked in from off campus - Tiramisu Cake, Chocolate Velvet Cheesecake, Dark Side of the Moon Cake, etc., etc. And this is, indeed, unfortunate. Given the overall quality of the appetizers & entrées, just a few more homemade desserts would add immensely to the total dining experience. On the other hand, I freely admit that my dining partner's Pecan Pie and my Cappuccino Truffle - dark chocolate encrusted cappuccino ice cream with pieces of candy toffee - were both, if not memorable, certainly quite tasty. To my knowledge, food has never been an issue at Bunha Faun... No, the major gripe has usually been with regard to service - a two-fold issue involving both servers and the kitchen - which, upon occasion, can be somewhat slower than a herd of turtles. So, if you plan to dine at Bunha Faun - and it is most assuredly worth a visit - my advice is to make it your only stop for the evening... Just in case.

It had been awhile since we dined there last. The problem, service. We arrived a bit early, but were sat right away. The server, Delroy had 5 tables, and we watched as he went back and forth to each table, being jovial and asking each table how was everything. He then came towards our table, and took a swift turn to give more water to the table next to us. He could have at least acknowledged us during his many table visits to every other table, but chose not to. After about 10-15 minutes of waiting he finally decided to greet us. My wife and I do not drink alcohol and the look of disgust on his face when he was removing the wine glasses from our table was quite obvious. At that point he figured a low check amount without selling a bottle of wine, so the effort to give a great dining experience went to zero immediately. He told us the specials and disappeared for another 15 mins. He came back to take our order, and that was the last time he visited our table! We never saw him again. The non alcoholic drinks were delivered by the back waiter, and may I say she was incredibly attentive to us. We were delighted by the appetizer, shrimp and crabmeat in a garlic sauce. Then the entrees came out. We actually enjoyed the appetizer so much, had Delroy decided to visit our table again, or bother to check how everything came out, we would have ordered another one. I wanted another drink, but was unable to get one because he was making multiple table visits to all the other tables, telling stories about his wine experiences, but again, never returned to our table, not even once! We really wanted to order the crème brûlée for dessert as it was my wife's favorite and we were celebrating her birthday, but he refused to come to our table. At this point, we just wanted to pay the check and leave, go somewhere to get dessert and celebrate her birthday. We finished our meal, and I actually had to call out to him as he passed our table to get his attention for the check, he glanced over and said, "one minute" and kept walking. Then he starting walking our way and just passed our table again, and went to water the table next to us for the fourth time, before turning around, staring at me, without a word, as I asked for the check. He said, "no dessert"? I said no, just the check. He sent the back waiter with the check, then picked it up from the table, after processing it, dropped it on our table without a word, and walked away. Against my better judgement, I still left him a 20% gratuity. We left and went elsewhere to celebrate.

My husband, who has been to Paris and is very particular about his escargot, said it was the closest he has ever had to the real thing. That alone says a lot. We started with the mushroom toast, which was hands down the best toast we have ever had, along with deviled eggs topped with salmon roe that added the perfect burst of flavor. Every bite felt thoughtful and elevated. For our mains, we ordered the coq au vin and duck frites, and both were outstanding. The sauces were rich and balanced, and the meats were cooked perfectly. Dessert sealed the deal with crème brûlée and pot de crème. The crème brûlée, especially, was a masterpiece. Beyond the food, the restaurant itself is small and charming with a cozy, intimate feel. The staff were warm and attentive and made the whole experience even better. This place deserves way more hype than it gets. If you are anywhere near Haddonfield, do not miss it.

We made our reservation the night before and were off. Entering, you immediately notice only about half a dozen tables in the same room the food is prepared. It's a nice setting that is definitely unique. We started with a tomato bisque. It was creamy, smooth, and a great hot soup to start off a chilly winter evening. My main course was the Duck Frites. A generous helping of fries, with a smaller helping of duck strips. The amount of duck was a little disappointing, but it had a good flavor and a touch chewy. It came with an unusual banyuls aioli sauce on the side, that I quite liked. We finished the evening with a crepe cake that was quite large. I would definitely recommend splitting it, but I found it to be lovely sweet way to end the evening. The crepe was probably about ten layers and soft enough to cut through with a spoon. It came served with a raspberry coulis and powdered sugar. The ends were fired to conclude the dish with a light crunch. All and all, I enjoyed my meal at the Little Hen. If you're in the area, it's a nice place to have an upscale meal or a romantic evening in a small town not all too far outside of Philadelphia.

A group of 6 on a dinner reservation at their first seating at 6pm. We entered and were sat at the back corner table- their air conditioning was a relief. The vibes- quaint, tight quarters. Grandma's dining room. Emphasis on the grandma, as the crowd was much older. I found that fascinating, as Birchrunville is a "must stalk" reservation. That type of spot is usually on trend (and not on elderly). We sat, broke out our BYOs and contemplated first course. The menu is ever-changing which is refreshing. Seasonal and never stagnant, even if Babcia grabs a table regularly. Appetizers arrive- we order a variety. Hits and misses. What didn't miss throughout our dining was each presentation. Smears and dollops and thoughtfulness to plates. Oysters- ok. No variety of types to choose from. Also a non-preferred: the oysters were already dressed with their mignonette. No option naked was disappointing. The bone marrow was lacking depth. It tasted mostly of its topped garnish and was fattier than expected. The stuffed figs could've been a passer-by. Fresh by lack of flavor. We liked the crispy bacon. Caesar salad was another take it or leave it. The goat cheese croquettes caused confusion (see photo). It was actually an arugula salad - note, well dressed and citrusy, with breaded cheese crumbs atop. We wanted a ball of cheese, per the croquette. Interesting spin? But we'll leave apps on a high note- The gazpacho. Appealing to the eye and palette- bright, cheery, cool and clean. To entrees- this is where the opposition arises. From fantastic to terrible. Kudos given: meats and skin on seafood. Unmemorable: sauces Just Bad: my seafood trio Great crusts on the lamb and steaks. They were cooked to proper temp, juicy and flavorful. Fish- skins crispy and meat flaky. I am sorry to say, but have to emphasis that I deemed parts of my dish inedible. The whitefish was bland, the crab cake had no lumps and the AHI! There was the inedible- the tuna. Couldn't chew it, refused to swallow it. The sear was so hard on this thing, the tuna turned into chewing gum. Just bad. A complementary dessert was enjoyed in sweet treat by the birthday boy. While service was attentive and pleasant, we were rushed out for second seating. Understood, we just felt excused and hustled out. Like we did something wrong. So, we end up at 3 stars. If a reservation feels elite, so should the food. Overall our experience was just good. Here there is history, but not all the hype.
