This place is a diamond in the rough! I did not expect to find a place like this tucked away in this tiny town. We were immediately showered with perfect service before we even stepped through the door. The waitress was more than attentive and spoiled us to death with kindness. We were the only ones there when we arrived but I don't doubt that they provide the same level of service when they are packed. We ordered the fried pickles as an appetizer - they were so crunchy and flavorful. I couldn't keep myself from snacking on them. I got the fish sandwich, thinking I would have a nice light lunch but this sandwich was larger than life! The portions are very generous here and the fish was cooked perfectly. We live in Lampasas and made the hour drive to Gatesville to see the double feature at The Last Drive in Picture Show (Inside Out and Ant-Man). The movie didn't start until 8:45 pm, but we arrived in town with an hour and a half to spare. We checked Yelp reviews for restaurants in Gatesville and chose the Feed Mill because it had almost 5 stars. I had the sirloin and shrimp with loaded mashed potatoes and a side salad. My wife had the fried pork chops with fried okra and loaded mashed potatoes. My daughter had a club sandwich with loaded mashed potatoes and a side salad. (I know! Really? We go to a steak house and she gets a sandwich. Go figure...) My son was at work in Lampasas. Poor kid. The décor was Cracker Barrelesque (Is that a word?) with various farm implements hanging on the walls. We were sure not to sit under the horse castrator (see comedian Tim Hawkins). My wife enjoyed looking at the various brands of feed bags that were decorating the wall across from us. Our friendly waitress provided excellent service. The food was delicious! We have absolutely no complaints. We really enjoyed the loaded mashed potatoes which came with bacon, shredded cheese, and sour cream. The portions were so generous that we could not finish. No doggy bag since we still had two movies to watch and then a drive back to Lampasas. We really enjoyed our meal. I had a Southwest Burger and Onion Rings with ice tea. The onion rings were tasty and recommended. The Southwest Burger was just. It wasn't real spicy. I won't get it again. Being a visitor to town and the restaurant for the first time, we accidentally parked on the back side of the restaurant. A kind gentleman employee led us through the kitchen to the dining room. We felt right at home!! Country/ranch decor was cute and interesting to look at. Ordered the small chicken fried steak, and while it wasn't the best I've ever had, it was definitely up there. Great tasting gravy and portion size. Came with 2 sides. Had the fried okra and the loaded mashed potatoes. The fried okra was better than most, large pieces and not too greasy. Waitstaff was courteous and attentive. Got a huge to-go drink without asking. Will definitely make this our go-to place on the way to Lubbock from now on!! read more

This is about american as you can get awesome cafe style food with barbecue also! If you are hungry its the place to go larger style portions on most plates so its worth the money which is all fair priced. Returned after a year and found a similar experience. Service was 4 or even 5 stars, but there seems to be no passion in the food. The owners might be spending all their effort on their new BBQ venture down the street (Bare Bones BBQ). Anyway chef salad was large but a mix of packaged greens mix with packaged bacon bits with packaged croutons and some discount ham lunch meat they sliced and cubed. Add a couple onion slices, two tomato slices they grabbed from the burger fixing some bottles dressing and that adds up to something you could get at a gas station; Dissapointing. We moved to town a couple of months ago, and based on reviews here we wanted yummy fried foods. The first two visits were great (4 stars) but our last visit with visiting family was a bust. Their fried appetizers are always crispy and well-seasoned and delicious, but the entrees are hit and miss. Lots of frozen stuff and somewhat bland. We ordered fried pickles, but didn't get ranch even though we asked for it over the phone. We also ordered two burgers, one on sourdough, and both without onions. Both had onions on them and were on the same bun. Lastly, the fries were just blah. You could tell the oil needed to be changed out a few batches ago. I've worked in the food industry and I get it, a Friday is hectic. But it is the mistakes like these that distract customers from coming back because of someone's lack of attention to detail. Definitely! as good as it gets in the area. My family made our way up the short drive from Cove on a Sunday because most of the good spots in Lampasas are closed on Sunday and we haven't been impressed ever in Killeen. The service at the Feed Mill was pleasant and genuine. We only had to wait shortly for a table to be cleaned off before being seated. The place does fill up with locals. We caught them at the tail end of the Sunday lunch rush and service wasn't suffering at all from the rush. I was blown away with the quality of the food and promptness of preparation. I have suffered through many experiences in Killeen. The Feed Mill was a welcomed surprise and the reviews are no smoke and mirror show. The steaks are perfect, my wife is extremely picky when it comes to steak and she loved her 10 oz fillet. The Chicken fried steak is ridiculous (the small is plenty). The pork chops are white meat with the fat trimmed off and are wonderful fried or grilled. There is not a thing on the menu that would give you any notion of being out of the box. It is all fresh looking and tasting. My youngest son said the chicken strips were the best he ever had and he is somewhat of an expert. A group of us had lunch last Wednesday and we were delighted with the great service and food. The green chili burger was served on a flavorful bun and was delicious, grilled chicken salad and fried chicken salads were all served fresh with a nice selection of dressing. The best salad was mine! I ordered the Chef salad! It was the first real old fashioned chef salad I have had in several years. Everything in the salad was cold, fresh and well presented. Terrific beets! We were passing through on a Saturday. When the server informed us, they cut their own beef we ordered that. My hamburger steak was so tasty that I ate all 8oz. My husband's Ny strip was lovely, very tender and juicy, which is unusual for that cut of meat, and shows the quality of the beef. The fries are hand cut shoestring and simply yummy. The dressings are homemade, and the Italian I had was super. The salad bar is small, but great with hand cut hard boiled eggs, hand cut lettuce, homemade green pea salad (yumm), the pasta salad looked good. The pickled beets were the best surprise! They are Fabulous! Homemade and taste very similar to my grandmother's, very sweet/sour with a hint of clove, just wonderful! We were so impressed that we ordered 2 hamburgers/ no buns to go for supper. They make most of their own desserts, and we would have tried if not so full. Service was very good and friendly.
