What an interesting building!!!!! You go in, you look around because you're nosey.... I mean fascinated, because you're standing in a piece of history. I think. This is IF this really was a firehouse at one point in time. If it wasn't, then I already knew that and was just kidding around. Anyway, you order up front.... go find yourself a table and they'll bring you your food. If you sit upstairs, the food magically teleports upstairs, and your server will present you your food. I mean I know they have a stairway, but I don't see the staff use them. So they either must have an elevator, escalator, stairs, or no! A ladder!! They must use a ladder since firehouses have ladders. And to descend they slide down a pole. Yeah, that makes the most sense. Food portions are HUGE!! Not even exaggerating. It's huge! Everything I had here were very good, just their portions. Man, appetizers alone can feed like 4 people. Or 100 if each person had a nibble. It definitely is a must visit restaurant, for sure! Now the best for last. Their service. It was perfect! Attentive without being invasive. Fast and efficient, they all move fast but with grace and form. Very professional! And the day I was there I ordered a bottled water but they ran out. No biggie, I got their regular water which tasted amazing because it probably was fire fighting water... but the manager (?) was able to track down some bottles and brought me one, on the house! Food is pretty good, it's a local staple. I am always for supporting local business. The food doesn't offer a lot of flavor diversity which makes sense they are offering very simple options and they do them well. I just wish there were maybe some spicier sauces or just one or two more flavor profiles to choose from. The vibe is very hometown classic. Checked out best burgers in Johnson City, being on we was passing through. This place popped up on the list, so we ate here. The burger was seasoned on the outside and no season on the inside. My wife got the burger and I got the brisket sandwich. Brisket sandwich was good, not the best but good. The seasoning on the burger was super salty. Not best burger in Johnson City. A little disappointed with our meal. Staple of my childhood growing up in the tree streets. It's prolly the closest comparison you can have to Chick-fil-A in terms of consistency of quality service. It has a really nice family atmosphere. BBQ is pretty good. Usually get a pulled pork or chicken sandwich. Their ribs are also very good. Make sure to get their BBQ beans too. If I had to say a negative it would be that their baked potatoes and fries can some times have a weird taste. This was our first experience here and the food was pretty good (Ribs and hash brown casserole were excellent but the brisket was dry). They do not serve alcohol (which isn't a dealbreaker), just putting it out there for someone looking for a place that serves beer with their BBQ- this won't be the place. Finally got our server she was nice. i went to the bathroom and it smelt terrible, worse then a gas station, asked my wife if we could leave she said she already ordered our food, was sitting beside swinging door. I am in town from Pennsylvania for work and one of my staff recommended this as a great place for BBQ. I visited last night and this place did not disappoint. The staff was extremely courteous, attentive, and genuinely friendly (I think her name is Abby...). I asked for recommendations and ordered the pulled pork and brisket. The sides, beans and hash brown casserole (which was just the right amount of "burnt" to a crisp texture) were just as good as the meat. Oh the Firehouse. We ate there in summer 2022 shortly after moving to JC. The food was pretty good and we looked forward to our next visit. M family & I had a very pleasant experience here today (6/9/18). The restaurant was clean & everyone was nice. I ordered the pulled pork platter which came with Texas toast (maybe a little too much butter though) & my 2 sides of choice were the broccoli salad (I thought mine was the best but they may have me beat) & the loaded baked potato salad. All very good. I would order this same dish again. My husband ordered the brisket platter & I tried some of it & it as well was very good. Maybe even better than my pulled pork. He got the fries & they were of course good too. My child got chicken tenders (no surprise there). I didn't try them but she ate both pieces & she never does that, so I was impressed. Unfortunately her dad ate her fries because to her they didn't "look like fries". :( Our waitress was very nice & attentive. Even servers that weren't ours were friendly with us & noticed my daughters drawing on the back of her menu (very nice of her) & offered to fill our water glasses when she didn't have to. A restored firehouse with a fire truck right inside the door. The vibe is welcoming and warm. Everyone was so friendly. Our server, Katelyn, was fantastic. Visited for the first time ever on 09/06/18. Of the 3 BBQ places I tried, Firehouse had the second best pulled pork. The sides were pretty tasty too. And I tried dessert and that was delicious. The service was stellar - best of all the restaurants I visited while on vacation. This was a nice little gem and the people of Johnson City are lucky to have it! All good, come for the bbq but know that non bbq diners will find great items and vegetarians get delicious food and several options. This place has cozy nooks for large parties and quiet spots where friends can have a conversation. While there I saw a gentleman in a wheelchair easily accommodate. As a native Upper East Tennessean, I have obviously eaten at the Firehouse on more than one occasion. But each time I eat here seems to be better than the last. I do have to admit I am a creature of habit, I get the regular pulled pork sandwich, hold the slaw, french fries and my son and I share the barbecue beans. Pair that with a partially sweet tea and mmmmmm. I have had other's BBQ: Phil's, Dixie, Pardners, Southern Craft, and Ridgewood, and to me it is all about the way the meat is prepared and smoked. Too smokey it is inedible, not enough smoke and you just ate pork roast. Firehouse smokes their meat just right. Their sauces are homemade and their sides are outstanding. Great lunch! The pulled pork platter was top notch once again! The meat was cooked perfectly, tender, and tasty. The fries were crispy and I love dipping them in the house dressing instead of catsup! This is a unique restaurant in that it really is an old fire station. My husband, and especially my son, loved the old fire engine at the front door! For a place the size of this one, the atmosphere was really subdued, which is fine to us. Just a little challenging for a five year old boy. :) The decor is dated and the food presentation seemed lacking a modern appeal. But the service and the food were pretty good. I got the pulled chicken plate with a baked potato and steamed broccoli. It was pretty good. The potato wasn't dry and three days old, which is a plus to me. Hubby got the brisket with the hashbrown casserole and beans. He seemed to enjoy it except the beans were too spicy. Overall, we would definitely give it another try. 4.5 stars - No way. I have to give credit to the staff. The reception staff and servers were quite friendly and competent. The restaurant was clean and well maintained. However, as barbecue is the featured food category on the menu and this is a highly rated restaurant, I expected the pulled pork sandwich to be first class and was really disappointed. The sandwich meat was over- chopped and runny and the bun was exceedingly thin. Bottom line, the BBQ was falling out as I picked up the sandwich and the bottom bun was soaked. Eating this sandwich the traditional way was a non-option --- I had use to knife and fork. There are much better bbq restaurants around but you might have to travel down country roads and find them in little shacks with hickory smoke coming out of the smoke house in back. They're still around and probably not advertised.....you just have to find them. read more
