The waitress or owner was really friendly and told us that if we ordered online, we can get 10% off if we pay in cash and also a free bowl of red bean paste if we order more than $20. Small unassuming cafe that has a very very extensive list of hk style desserts. In my opinion, their standouts are the ginger milk based desserts. Don't be fooled, while it's called fiber milk and many pictures will show the staff pouring liquid into the bowl, it's a very unique dessert for those not used to it! After pouring the dessert into the bowl (which had some ginger liquid in it) you must let it set for abt 3 minutes and then the magic happens, turning it into a congealed consistency like pudding. We can tell they use organic ginger in their product as we use the same organic ginger at home. It tasted very gingery and spicy but the final product just wasn't creamy enough. This was our first visit and we had good experience overall. It is a very small store with maybe around 7 small round tables each can sit 2-4 people around it. The menu is very comprehensive with a lot of choices. The menu itself doesn't have any photo but you can scan a QR code to access online menu with photos. They encourage cash and debit card payment. They will take credit card but will add a 5% processing fee in top of it. I was recommended this place because it's similar to Meet Fresh, so I decided to check it out. It was super busy, and I signed up on the waitlist. I kept checking my spot, and it said "Table Ready" but I was 2nd in line which was confusing so I went up to the server. She dismissively told me to wait, even though the sign said to check in with the server. After 5 more minutes, my status changed to 1st in line, and I got a text confirming I was next. We waited inside, but no one seated us. Then, the waitlist changed to "Seated," which wasn't true. When I asked the server, she argued that it was my fault for not confirming, and didn't want to sit us at a table after waiting all that time even though I had already confirmed so twice. Also, the place only accepts Canadian cash or debit. I'm from the U.S., so I asked if my U.S. debit card would work before, and they said it was fine. After finishing our desserts (with a one-dessert-per-person minimum to sit), they added a 5% surcharge for using an "American debit," which was never mentioned upfront. Chinese have many different kinds of desserts, one of my favorites is the Cantonese dessert. Traditional Cantonese dessert is combined with modern ingredients and highly recommend everyone to try it. I ordered the * ginger milk pudding * It tastes as the name suggests; gingery, milky and pudding-y! But it's VERY gingery which was a really nice to soothe the throat I love how they do the pouring of the milk in front of you (swipe last to watch the process) and provided an hourglass so you know when it's ready to be devoured! I initially thought it was going to be more liquidy (even tho the name said pudding ) so I was surprised how quickly the milk solidified during the hourglass moments Definitely recommend giving this a try if you haven't yet! Next I got one of my all-time favourite foods from night market * special rice noodle rolls * It's plain rice noodle rolls but topped off with hoisin sauce + peanut sauce the PERFECT combo! They even provided a side of soy sauce and chili paste (I used a bit of the soy and skipped the chili). The rolls were soft and chewy and overall I just loved it since night market isn't opened yet, I'm glad I was able to have some here! Lastly, my grams (aka foodie partner-in-crime) ordered the * cabbage pork Chinese dumplings * but unfortunately did not like it. She managed to eat half of it but that was all she could tolerate. They did provide chili sauce for her but since she's not able to eat any hot sauce and doesn't like using sauce with dumplings, her review is based on eating the dumpling as it is. Hello friends! Grayson and I recently visited The First Dessert in the Killarney area. There aren't a lot of Hong Kong dessert shops in the metro Vancouver area so it was nice to find a place that served it. There is free 2 hour parking in front of The First Dessert but no parking in the back so you may need to circle around a bit to find a spot during busy hours. The interior of the cafe isn't very large. It had 4 tables on each side with 4 stools at each table. The seating here is very reminiscent of something you would find in Hong Kong which I liked. Their menu looks pretty extensive but it's really a few core items with different toppings in it. Hong Kong dessert consists of a lot of tofu and hot/cold sweet soup. The soups are then filled with toppings such as red bean, fruit, grass jelly or sago. There wasn't a lot of taro balls in there for a "taro ball" dessert because there were sweet potato and matcha flavoured QQ balls in there too but I didn't mind because I love them. They weren't as chewy as I've had before in the past but it was still pretty tasty. The coconut base was sweetened a little more than I would have liked. However, I am sensitive to sweet things so it would be perfect for anyone else. I stumbled upon this place after looking for so long for a place that sold Chinese "herbal" type of dessert shop (tong suey po - in Cantonese), specifically herbal tea or tea in general. Issues I encountered: - 1st visit; I had originally asked to split a $5 bill and was told they didn't have any $1 coins left but other tables had paid with some coins so I was confused. I decided to just leave the $5 bill as tip. Nothing wrong with that as she was running around. - 2nd visit; My order came to $29.30 in which I handed the cashier $30.35. I waited around for my change as I was getting take out and the cashier brushed me off and closed the register and yelled at "Thank you!". I looked at her quite confused but she quickly ran off and it was getting crowded so I didn't bother asking. I understand it is only $1 but this is the second time a staff had "refused" to give correct change. The amount isn't the point. Its the principle of being honest with customers. The staff knew what she was doing and taking extra money as tip, assuming customers won't do anything about it since it's such a low amount. Its a sensitive time right now and businesses aren't doing so well but it's not going to do well if this continuously happens. The First Dessert is located on Victoria Drive and they specialize in traditional Cantonese / HK desserts. Everything is reasonably priced! I tried their sago dessert with taro balls. This was so good! The taro balls had a nice chew and the portion is so worth for its price! I also had a chance to try the ginger milk which actually came as a liquid. A lot of other places I tried I find water down their mango pomelo sago and the tofu dessert is quite bland so you rely heavily on syrup or toppings for flavour. However the mango pomelo sago here is delicious creamy and sweet. You definetly taste the mango! The tofu dessert is sweet on its own so you have the option to use the syrups to enhance the flavour. I would def skip the durian dumpling tho because it wasn't that amazing. It was about 5-6 durian dumplings in a milky liquid. I personally dont think it had much durian flavour. It was quite mild. I love interactive food! I mean, I wouldn't necessarily call their Ginger milk interactive but it's more interactive than most. First of all, this dessert really packed a punch (of ginger) especially compared to the other dessert we got, which seemed pretty watered down. My friend described the taste of the sago as a solid mediocre and he wasn't wrong. I appreciated the science behind the ginger milk though (some biochemical principles behind all this) but essentially heating the milk to the perfect temperature so it curdles the milk when mixed with the ginger, creating a dou fu fa kind of texture. I throughly enjoyed the Ginger Milk but I wasn't a fan of the Sago dessert. I also really appreciated the use of China bowls and having traditional tables and chairs but it wasn't all too practical in utilizing and maximizing their space which probably lead to the longer wait times. I came in the evening of a weekend and waited about half an hour for $10 worth of dessert. The First Dessert has been highly rated so I had high expectations when coming in for my first time! I was excited about this place but unfortunately I came out a bit disappointed. Being Cantonese and growing up eating these desserts I was hoping that they'd taste similar to what I always had growing up. But this had nothing to do with the service - the ladies here were so cute, nice and attentive! GRASS JELLY + TARO BALLS + MINI TARO BALLS We loved the larger and mini taro balls! The ratio of the grass jelly to the taro balls were off - there was just way too much and it was overwhelming. I also didn't like how the grass jelly chunks were so huge and not in bite-sized pieces. It was hard to slice with the spoon since it was so firm and not soft - this made it difficult to scoop too. It would just fall out of the spoon with its size. It also tasted more like canned grass jelly, not fresh grass jelly. It was not silky or smooth at all. The milk in this was also waaayy too sweet for us. I don't think I'd order this again since there are many other places in Vancouver that do amazing fresh, soft and silky grass jelly desserts for much cheaper (ie. Blackball or snackshot). With the higher prices I expected it to taste more fresh. MANGO POMELO SAGO This one was not bad, we liked the coconut milk and sago in this. But there were too many large ice chunks in this and I was very confused. The mango tasted frozen and very sour - the pomelo also tasted hard and no flavour. Mango sago coconut milk has only a few pieces of mango, and it's on the crunchy and sour side. I was expecting the mango to be more smooth and sweet. The sago has good chewiness and coconut milk is not too sweet. Red bean taro ball grass jelly gives your more bang of the buck. The base is not as sweet as the coconut milk one. read more

If you're wanting good Asian dessert then you gotta come to The First Dessert. This is our place for go to Asian desserts. Specifically Chinese desserts. It's located on Victoria Drive, and they are generally open late. Even during this COVID season, they are offering take out for their customers to pick up and eat some fabulous Chinese desserts. First of all they have a good selection of desserts on their menu. Their staff is friendly (can speak fluently in both Chinese and English) as well as quick in their preparation of the desserts. The store itself is clean. Nothing overly fancy about their decor. It's simple with Asian culture furniture. But nothing too too unique about their ambiance and decor. Their prices are decent and you get a decent bowl for desserts. It's enough. Decent value for what you're paying. Location is ok. It's not close to Skytrain. But there is bus service that will get you here if you're taking public transit. Like most places in the city. Car is probably your best friend in getting here. There is street parking and neighborhood parking after certain time of the day. Highly recommended for Chinese desserts if that's what you're craving for.
