The pimento cheese is served warm with kettle-cooked potato chips. Because I was in a group, we ordered a bunch of things for the table. The pimento cheese, but also the TOTSchos (tater tots covered in beer cheese, pulled pork and cole slaw), and some smoked wings. All of these things were delicious, but my favorite was the TOTSchos because I'm a tot lover, and I love when the tots get kind of soft from the melty cheese and still kind of crunchy from the spots that don't have the melty cheese. BOTS (what people who live here call Bottom of the Stairs) is known for their smoked meats and barbecue. Some of the people at my table got pulled pork and things, but I was feeling like something slightly lighter, so I got the blackened catfish. It comes with slaw and two additional sides, and I picked mac & cheese and collard greens. Well, my meal wasn't light in the slightest, but it was delicious! The fish was tender and had that smoky flavor from the blackened seasoning. I got the Bots Mule to drink, because if I'm not drinking wine, I like to drink gin. Someone at my table got the Pickle-tini, and they did not enjoy it as much as I enjoyed my mule. Gin goes down a treat, I tell you what. Plus! They put your Bots Mule in a plastic BOTS cup that you get to take home. Free souvenir! Bottom of the Stairs exists because there is a Top of the Stairs. At the top of the stairs is an adults-only bar. BOTS is the family-friendly counterpart.

It was incredibly large. My first thought when seeing the food was "there's no way I'm going to finish this". The catfish fillet stretched across the entire plate to cover basically the entire thing. I didn't expect the brisket pieces to be so large either. Also, the amount of tater tots on the plate was significant as well. That's not even to consider the mac & cheese and slaw coming in separate, decently sized cups. Starting with the brisket, I thought this was quite good. What jumped out to me at the start was how well this seemed to be cooked, with beautiful char marks throughout and excellently charred edges. The pieces I had that really nice smoky flavor, and the fat in the meat (since brisket is rather lean - there wasn't too much of it) tasted really good as well. I do think it was a bit dry, as cutting it with a knife required a little bit more effort than cutting a perfectly juicy brisket was, and i did notice some of the meat to be somewhat tough, but I do think both pieces were pretty solid Moving to the fried catfish, I loved how well the breading was seasoned. It had some pepper and other spices that gave it that extra flavor. I liked this less than the brisket, however, due to a) how paper-thin the breading was and b) how easily the breading broke apart from the catfish itself. The entire fillet seemed like it was on the verge of collapse. After my first cut with a fork and knife, a lot of the breading came off, and a good amount of the inner fish spilled out onto the plate. I did think the fish meat was certainly not dry and tasted pretty good, though The tater tots were also fantastic, and there was a lot of them. the fried batter on these was thick and they were quite crunchy as a result. I also appreciated the relish-like sauce that came with them. Another thing that was really good was the slaw - I found the dressing especially to be really flavorful and the vegetables were done well. I liked the mac and cheese less, though, so when it came to prioritizing, I only ended up eating a few bites of it As I already mentioned, the portion size here was pretty insane, and for a price of only around 15 dollars for everything, I thought this ratio was astoundingly good. Located in an unassuming and relatively small building painted light blue on the outside, and with a simple sign on the roof above the entrance that reads: "COME ON IN / NEW MENU / DON CAMARON SEAFOOD," this very unique seafood restaurant located on Brambleton Ave in Cave Spring, Virginia, is more than just your ordinary Seafood restaurant. It's Mexican heritage cuisine brings to the menu items some flavors that contribute to the seafood taste more delicious than ever before. When driving down Brambleton Ave you can't miss a tall orange sign with the name and logo of the restaurant, placed right in front of their huge parking lot, providing convenient complimentary parking to all its customers. The restaurant building itself looks small from the avenue because is in the back of the parking lot, but once you get closer you will begin to notice the difference. Its log cabin architectural building design seems to give it warmth and as you enter its doors, all the wooden accents in the interior design of the building, together with the blue lighting treatment of the bar, and logo cabin look of the main dining area creates a cozy, warm, and friendly environment, perfect to enjoy a good meal and quality time with family and friends. As soon as I entered the restaurant, a friendly young lady greeted me with a friendly smile, took me to a table of my choice in the dining room, and handed me the menu. One can learn a lot about a restaurant from its menu. In this case, it was a beautifully designed menu, with its name, logo, and slogan on the cover. Open the menu and inside I found a good selection of seafood items, cooked in a variety of styles, with an easy to read font and highlighted with professionally taken photographs of the main items on the menu. Just from viewing the menu you can't help it but to want to return to taste some more of their delicious cuisine. My server, a very friendly young lady with a welcoming smile came by, introduced herself and took my order. To drink I had an Horchata, which is a sweet non-alcoholic drink made with rice and sugar, and very refreshing with lots of ice. They also had domestic and imported beers and wine on the menu. As my main course, I ordered the Camarnes Gratinados (Shrimp covered in bacon and melted cheese), with the two sides of French Fries and Hushpuppies. I found all the items of the menu to be reasonably priced and served abundantly. My food arrived in a reasonable amount of time and you can even watch this in one of my video clips accompanying this review. Everything on the plate was amazingly delicious, quality, and plentiful. The shrimps were fresh, plumpy, tasty, and cooked to perfection. The Fries were the right cut and fried just right to be crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside. And the Hushpuppies were amazing. My compliments to the Chef for such an extraordinary cuisine. I believe that the success of good tasting seafood lies in the way it is prepared and cooked. After making an appointment for five o'clock and mentioning that I would be celebrating my birthday there on that day, I wondered how it would be, for everytime I have dined there, their attention to detail has been superb, and their cuisine has been exquisite. The day finally arrived and I was standing by the door at five minutes to the hour. Inside I could see through their large front windows the movement of all the staff getting ready for the opening of the restaurant. At exactly five o'clock, the hostess approached and opened the door for me to enter. She warmly greeted me and apologized for not being able to give me the table I requested because they needed it to unite with other tables for a large group they would be having. But they had prepared another one in front of the open kitchen for me, where I would be able to observe the Chef and other cooks preparing my food. It was definitely to my satisfaction, and when she took me there I was very impressed with the small detail on the table of a Happy Birthday card from the restaurant signed by everyone there and suspended by a little stand. Things like that are priceless in my eyes. Shortly afterwards, my friendly and efficient server Ivy, came by, wished me a Happy Birthday and took my order. To drink I had my favorite Mocktail there, the Butterfly Kisses. As appetizer I ordered the Oyster Wraps. And for my main entrée, the Hanger Steak, my favorite item in their menu and that of all the other restaurants around the area. My server did an excellent job of bringing out my ordered items in a well-paced manner. I noticed the small but significant detail that the chef had of serving me a slightly larger amount of Hanger Steak than the usual, and this meant more to me than any of the other complimentary desserts which are given in most other restaurants on your birthday. There was no one to start with at the actual hostess stand and servers saw us standing at the door but did not approach us even though there was an hour left on their operating time. So we walked directly to the bar and sat down. We had just eaten at Fork in the Alley so all we wanted was one drink and we figured an hour was plenty of time to get that done. The first thing the bartender said to us was "The kitchen is closed." Not "hello" or "Hey what can I get you?" but the kitchen is closed. I said "oh I'm sorry I thought you closed at 10:00." He said "well, that's up for debate we were actually discussing that right now. We're basically closed but you can have a drink because it's not like the rest of these people are going anywhere." What do you mean that's up for discussion? Your hours say you're open till 10 o'clock, it's 9 o'clock I have an hour to eat and have drinks! The other bartender, or perhaps he was only a bar back, gave us a very disapproving look. I get it, I work in the food service industry. I'm a server at a 4 diamond restaurant, and I hate when people walk in minutes before we close and want to sit down. But if we post that we're open until 10 and you walk in at 9:45 I'm going to serve you and treat you like anyone else that walked in at 6:00 because it's your tips that pay my bills and put food on my table. It's definitely not the hourly wage I get from my employer! And as a server I never walk into a restaurant with less than 30 minutes to close. And it's more like an hour if I'm looking to eat a meal. I know you want to go home. When it's the end of the night and I'm at work, so do I! But there's an hour left and I wanted one drink. That's it! We continued to get disappointed looks from a few other employees even though we weren't the last people in the place. I told my friend (it's 9:45 at this point) that we obviously need to go since servers are standing around looking at us like we've got the plague. We paid our bill and promptly left. Two couples still at the bar. It's 9:59 right now as I'm writing this at home (you're still technically open btw) but I left feeling like I had stayed hours past your closing time. It's a real shame because we really enjoyed our drinks! They were super yummy! And I'm always getting asked by guests where's a good place for a late night cocktail and I used to recommend The River and Rail right along with Lucky's because we had a shuttle that would take guests out, but after tonight I won't be doing that anymore. After having been selected as number 4 of Yelp's Top 50 most prolific Elites of 2025, a year when I also was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Photographer of the Year Award at their Yelpies 2025 Award Ceremony, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, and where last year I was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Yelper of the Year Award, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and businesses, and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And Billy's in Downtown Roanoke, Virginia, is a perfect example. From the very first time I visited and dined at Billy's, I fell in love with it. I don't know if it was its history. Its historic building was constructed in 1912 and originally housed the Ritz Hotel. Then in 1979 John and Betsy Williams opened "Billy Ritz," named in homage to the building's history and a former local saloon. For 29 years (1979 - 2007) the Williamses operated the restaurant, making it a popular downtown fixture. In 2007 the restaurant closed and in 2008 the building was purchased by new owners: Neel and Neal Keesee. Following extensive renovations that preserved its historic character, the restaurant reopened in May 2012 as "Billy's". And since then Billy's operates as a popular downtown dining spot with a focus on fine dining, and is celebrated for maintaining a piece of old downtown Roanoke history while providing modern, upscale dining. Or maybe it is, its refined American cuisine with a focus on steaks and fresh seafood, such as scallops, shrimps, lobsters, mahi-mahi, southern salmon, or catch of the day. Or its drinks, a well-curated bourbon bar with an extensive wine list and signature cocktails. It might also be its elegant and historic atmosphere, with a clasic dining room, a trendy outdoor patio, and private dining rooms to host private events and celebrations. Or even its corner location in one of the most valuable and desired areas in the heart of Downtown Roanoke. But even if all of the above are an important factor in my selection, I would say that last but most important of all is its staff; from its managers, its cooks, its bartenders, and its servers. They are not only knowledgeable, professional, and hospitable, but together form a team with the goal of making you feel at home there and having an extraordinary dining experience. That's why I say: "Any day can be made special by dining at Billy's." This Saturday, I went to dine there after making my reservation in the Open Table app. Even though they could not honor my initial table request for a window view table in the main dining room, the manager was kind enough to accommodate me at a window view table of another very quaint dining room facing the outdoor patio. I believe it was table 54, served by the very friendly, kind, and efficient server, Savannah. She first brought me an amazing drink prepared by my favorite bartender. Then she gracefully took my order. I had Four Bacon Wrapped Scallops as appetizer. An 8oz Filet cooked medium-rare with a Lobster Tail enhancement, Cheddar Smashed Potatoes, and Grilled Asparagus, as my main entrée. And for dessert, my favorite, their famous Crème Brûlée. She did an excellent job in making sure I was well taken care of by coming by at the appropriate times and even when she was serving a large table in the main dining room, she made sure to send the principal host to see if I needed anything. As I was dining, the restaurant's manager came by my table to say hello, and that is something I truly appreciate from any quality restaurant I dine at. What an outstanding dining experience. And even if I was only one customer dining there that busy evening, the following day I received a text message from one of my fellow Yelpers who was in town for a week of conferences and was looking for a place for a "friends' get-together. And without any hesitation I recommended Billy's. If a picture is worth a thousand words, a good word is worth many customers. And thus, I give this restaurant a 5 Star and now you know why.

But it nearly faced closure permanently in 2021 when management announced on their social media that the restaurant would serve its final meals on June 19, 2021, citing pandemic hardships, staffing issues, and a prospective buyer. However before the scheduled closure, the community rallied behind the diner to keep it going, and new owners stepped in to purchase and run the business, continuing the tradition of home-style cooking. Today it operates with updated hours and is open Tuesday through Sunday. After finding out about this restaurant, I couldn't resist but to wake up early on a Wednesday morning to go have breakfast there. Got into my pearl white Lexus and took the scenic route to drive there, with the comfort of music from my car radio in the background, while enjoying the beautiful view. I knew I had arrived when I saw the restaurant's iconic road sign which immediately stood out. I was very impressed by how well the building was maintained throughout all these years. Inside, it looked new but with that "real-American" diner feel of the past. I was greeted by a friendly young lady who welcomed me and asked what I wanted to drink while I looked at the menu. I asked for coffee. When she came back with my hot coffee I placed my breakfast order of a Greenwood Omelet with white toast and Southern fried apples. As she went to place my order, I studied the menu some more and was surprised to see so many Southern items that I liked and are not always easy to find. Items such as Country Style Steak, Catfish Filet, Fried Clams, Pork Tenderloin, Center Cut Country Ham, Fried Okra, Corn Fritters, and homemade Cobblers, among other things. I enjoyed the ambiance of the place: the colors the walls were painted, its hardwood floors, its large windows that brought in the light, and its cozy fireplace in the back dining room. The owner/manager was quite rude and uninviting to the extent of being insulting and condescending. I accepted the change in food and atmosphere, but I will not return after being treated so rudely by the person in charge. The restaurant takes cash only but does not tell you that until you try to pay, then degrades you for not knowing. There is an atm as your only option to get cash to pay for the overpriced meal, but it charges a ridiculous fee. When I apologized for not knowing the cash only policy, the owner/manager rudely informed me that is why there is an atm and a fee for using it and that everyone already knows they only take cash. Everyone except "outsiders". She continued to make snide comments about non locals coming in there trying to pay without cash and next time if we plan to eat to bring cash or pay the atm. The owner/manager was also obsessed with loudly complaining about noone wanting to work. Perhaps her attitude could be a reason? Also, while eating, there was an employee in the kitchen area coughing, snorting, spitting and genuinely being nasty around food being prepared for customers. Again, not a good impression or one that I would ever make a return trip for. So sad considering there aren't many options in the area.

Its beautiful hardwood floors contrasts perfectly with the lovely and very elegant black dining furniture, comprised of booths, tables and chairs, and bar counter, all with outstanding black marbalized table tops that give the place class. The restaurant's simple decor seems to emphasize its best features. Its high ceiling painted black also gives it a nice touch. And the large windows that go all around the corner bring in the light making the hardwood floors and table top shine to highlight their best features.The restaurant also has an open second floor, as well as a corner three steps high stage for bringing live entertainment that will provide the place with another exclusive detail to attract its clientele. I had an opportunity to meet the restaurant's manager, Blake, and he had great ideas that, when implemented, could most likely make this place one of the most talked about or highly regarded restaurants in the heart of fine dining in downtown Roanoke. Owner Justin Hayden described the menu of this Second Soft Opening as "a soul food Caribbean-style menu with a New Age twist." It included dishes such as Jerk Chicken with rice and beans, Oxtail Rasta Pasta, Classic Cheese Burger, Loaded Fries or Nachos, Wing Basket with your choice of sauce, and Garden Salad. Hopefully in the future they will also include other Caribbean dishes from other Caribbean Islands such as Cuba, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico, who have excellent cuisines. Today I ordered the Oxtail Rasta Pasta and a Coke to drink. I was the first one there and had to leave early because I had another commitment. As usual, as soon as I walked in the place, I was received with a heartfelt, open-arm, very warm welcome, and was given the good news that starting on March 16th their hours will be expanded to 10:30AM - 10:00PM Mondays through Thursdays and 10:30AM - 1:00AM Fridays and Saturdays. They told me about all their plans for the Spring of the new year, including the further expansion of their outdoor patio dining area. My server Justin, the son of this family-owned business, took my order and had me seat down at the counter of my choice. I ordered a Coke to drink, forgetting that they also had Cherry Coke, my favorite. To eat I ordered a Jesse Jones Beef All Beef Hotdog with mustard, ketchup, and relish; as well as a Smokehouse Burger, which had a double smash burgers, BBQ sauce, Bacon, Caramelized Onions, Pickles and two cheeses of my choice. I picked American and Swiss cheese as my choice and they customized it to include lettuce, tomatoes, and ketchup. Then I made it a combo with Waffle Fries and a medium Coke. I enjoyed watching the cook make my food in their open kitchen. Wearing special black disposable nitrile gloves, he grabbed a ball of fresh, high-quality ground meat and put it on the grill; then he used a burger smasher to flatten the ball-sized beef patties onto the hot surface of the grill for maximum searing. During the process, he changed his disposal gloves several times to ensure food safety. He also used a basting brush to butter the burger buns before he heated them on the grill. This not only gave the burger a good taste but made it look delicious. And the waffle fries were amazing. They were well seasoned and shaken after they came out of the frier; soft in the inside and crispy on the outside. The best waffle fries I've ever had. Even better than the ones from Chick-fil-A! They also had me taste their newly introduced Tater Tots; which are a graded potato formed into small cylinders and deep-fried. Their taste and texture were out-of-this-world! Very soft in the inside and just the right amount of crunchinnes on the outside. For dessert I had a couple of Strawberry Cheesecake Rolls. It reminded me of the fried cheesecake commonly served in Mexican restaurants but these also had strawberry filling. I was so pleased with their food and service that I gave them a good tip and paid at the counter with my Harvard Alumni World Mastercard. I highly recommend this little restaurant and urge you to give them your total support. What you'll get back will be an "absolutely amazing" dining experience like never before.

Attention to detail is definitely on the mind of the workers here. Chili had such a great fine grind, sear on burger was perfect and fries were hot and crispy. Will be back! Highly recommend!
