My father passed a few weeks ago.. and about seven/eight years ago, my dad took me on our VERY FIRST vacation together for my 30th birthday. We drove up to Sisters Oregon from the Bay Area to go fly fishing together. Myself being and avid hunter and outdoorsman, and my dad loving restaurants and fine wines.. He thought a fishing trip would be something that i would enjoy (even though neither of us were fishermen at all) He booked a 2-3 day guided tour through the Fly Fishers Place and it was an absolute adventure that i still to this day will remember for the rest of my life. I cant quite remember our guide's name but he made sure that we were well trained, equipped and that we caught plenty of fish. I'm writing this because as i said, my father just passed. Amazing day on the Fall River with Sequoia, the Trout Whisperer! She has a sixth sense and sensibility. My fly rod was bent throughout the day! A few "early releases" were just as exciting as the healthy bows that made it to the net. I was able to practice and refine (with tips from Sequoia) nymphing, streamers, and dry fly techniques. Spent two days with Mary Ann Dozier on both the Crooked Creek and the Fall River. Mary Ann taught us how to Euro-nymph several years ago and we are hooked. Caught quite a few fish the first day, but mainly learned a lot of new techniques which we appreciated so much. Second day at the Fall River, we did some dry fly fishing and realized the fish were smarter than we were. But still was really fun. Went to the Hatchery in the afternoon, no one was around. Caught some beautiful Rainbows. We had a blast. What a great day with a terrific Guide. I had my line in every tree, bush and stump you could find and at one point caught Mary Ann. I didn't find this a very friendly place, I came in on a saturday when no one was in the store to get help and set up with leaders etc for fishing the Metolius. I couldn't get the guys attention away from the computer screen, I am local to Oregon and have never had that kind of unwelcome feeling in a fly shop anywhere including locally...Orvis etc. It wouldn't be my first choice for supplies or help. read more

My partner and I are amateur fly fishers, and we brought two friends fishing for the first time. Troy and Tom were fantastic guides on our morning walk-and-wade! We caught rainbow trout and whitefish, and got lucky with tons of fish in the Crooked River that morning. T & T were the kindest, most patient instructors we could have asked for, and were swell to simply hang out with! They even brought multiple types of rods to let us practice different fishing techniques, and each of us came away with a lot of new knowledge and fond memories. This is a pretty good fly shop. They have what you need and the knowledge about the area you'd expect. You can get your license here and load up on flies you'll need for the area rivers and lakes... and there are a lot of rivers and lakes. I've been in here a few times and usually the experience has been pretty good. The last time I was in I was talking to a guy that seemed to have had his whole face botoxed... just expressionless and very uninterested, which is kind of a bummer. Maybe his dog just died or something, otherwise, a little tweak to the attitude could have made me go for 5 stars on this shop. read more

Fly Fisher's Place is a great fly shop. Very friendly and knowledgeable. Great small town, local shop. The fly selection is fantastic, and the staff is more than happy to help you with the appropriate selection for the current hatch. Being somewhat of a novice (I don't know my flies), and a woman fairly new to the sport, I have always felt encouraged to go out and give it a try... additionally, they always tell me where the "good holes" are (with maps), when to get there, and not to give up the good spot when all the guys show up. They are always very supportive. They are incredibly knowledgeable about the rivers and lakes around the Central Oregon area. I have been out on two float trips on the Deschutes and the guide I have used through the Fly Fishers Place has been excellent. With each trip the skills Joe has worked on with me have gotten more advanced, including wading, reading the steam, bugs/hatch, and casting techniques. He has pushed me past some of my fears and put me in places in the river I was afraid to go, but I felt safe... and on top of that he instinctively knows where the fish are (I hear he is a steelhead magnet) and how to get them. I have had amazing luck out there with his help. I get really excited when I catch every fish (even silly), but I don't know who was more excited... me or my guide, which made the trip really, really fun. Unpretentious, relaxing and just an all around great experience. Looking forward to another trip in May. I highly recommend stopping at the Fly Fisher's Place, whether you are heading to the Metolius or the Deschutes, local lakes, or other local rivers. They have everything you will need. read more

A full day guided trip on the lower deschutes was unplanned but as another reviewer wrote, was a trip of a lifetime. The guys at the shop are extremely friendly and helpful, and funny. Our guide Adam was simply a joy to spend the day with, knowledgeable about all that is flyfishing and deschutes, and kept up with our continued pounding of questions. He's simply amazing and we imagine everyone at the fly Fisher's place is the same. We also got a delicious sandwich box lunch from Melvins and an icebox of drinks. When you're with a guide who clearly loves doing what he does every day and imparts his knowledge freely that it makes you want to turn every vacation into a fly fishing trip, I'd say that's a great guide who represents a great fly fishing shop. In the past 2 weeks I've taken two guided fly fishing trips and both the guide, Mary Ann Dozer, and the shop have been great. The shop stall if knowledgeable about local conditions and very helpful. I ended up purchasing a fair bit of new kit but there was no pressure, in fact the staff was careful not to oversell and ensured that I only got gear that was appropriate for my skill level and budget. I highly recommend the shop for anyone planning on doing some fishing in the Bend or Sisters areas. read more

I am new to the sport and went in expecting to be talked down to. Not the case, Super nice guys and lots of info.

My wife and I signed up for the First Cast class and spent the day with our guide, Steve Erickson. He took us through the shop explaining the basics about gear, enough to get a handle on what to look for without being overwhelming. After suiting us up with boots and waders we took to the Crooked River south of Prineville. Steve is a really knowledgeable individual and is really easy to talk to. Our time on the river was successful in learning what to look for with bugs, river topography, and casting techniques. We continued to fish well into the fading light. We really enjoyed our time with Steve and on the river. We hope to continue our education in the spring. read more

Some fly shops can be snooty and not helpful. This place is the opposite. They know what they are talking about and happy to share information. They have a great selection and can custom order items as well. You can also purchase your fishing license while buying other supplies. Lastely, if you want a guide or help finding a place to fish, they can set you up with a professional to get you on the river catching fish. read more

Was in there for about 15 minutes and got one word, "Hi." It was a nice shop, quality gear, and some decent sale prices, but the guy at the counter was just chatting away with his girlfriend and didn't offer me a bit of help. A lot of items weren't priced such as some of the stuff on the sale rack, and a big stack of hats on the right side of the store. I saw a hat or two I would have walked out with, but since they weren't priced and I felt I was intruding on the shopkeep, I just walked out. No goodbye, no thanks for coming in. I will say I'm not a local, so maybe they are friendlier to familiar faces, but that shouldn't be the case in the summer in such a touristy area. I found much better service in Bend, and ended up spending a couple hundred bucks on a new kit at a shop in town that could have just as easily been spent here if the service had been better. read more

We just returned from a terrific trip to Sisters and Bend. Newbies at fly fishing and had gotten Fly Fisher's as a referral from Five Pines Lodge. We booked a full day guided trip and spent the day with Steve Erickson - couldn't have had a better time! Steve took three of us on the Lower Deschutes. His attention to detail, knowledge of the river and area, enthusiasm, energy and helpfulness absolutely made our experience that much better. Jeff and his staff are Great! There was a slight hiccup in the beginning of the day, but everyone worked hard to resolve it and make it a great day of fishing! Mac was my guide for my first fishing experience in Oregon. He performed his guide duties flawlessly. He put me on some fish, taught me some new techniques and improved on some things I was already doing. I missed a lot of strikes and hooked and lost several fish but Mac continued to be patient and politely let me know what to do or not to do next time to increase my odds of landing the fish. I started fly fishing in earnest 20 years ago and have fished all over the world, in the oddest places (including the black water rivers of Nicaragua- article in Salt Water Fly Fishing, Nov/Dec, 1997). I am now 72 and have a hip replacement. I have been worried about continuing to fly fish in swift rivers like the Deschutes. The Fly Fisher's Place in Sisters, Oregon, has been an excellent place for me to go for equipment like waders and boots with cleats, for knowledgeable advice about flies and fishing spots, and most importantly for a wonderful guide, willing to escort me an and out of difficult fishing spots, Dan Anthon, the Head Guide. Dan and I went fishing five times from mid August to mid September 2014. We caught large White Fish, Brown Trout (22" and 17"), a lovely wild Steehead in the Deschutes, and 36 fish (almost all medium to large Rainbows), in one day on the Crooked River during a hatch, in the afternoon.
