My husband and I recently scouted this adorable little shop in preparation for my 29th birthday. We decided that is was the RESPONSIBLE thing to do to enjoy a couple cupcakes beforehand... Just to make sure that our guests would like them. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Anyway! I decided on the "Pucker Up" Lemon cupcake, while my husband played it a little bit safe, opting for the "Ebony and Ivory" cupcake. Both were awesome. I've noticed a problem among boutique bakery cupcakes. Many times, their cupcakes are made in advance, and generally larger than the average cupcake, so they are prone to the cake part being a bit too dry, relative to the amount of frosting. This was NOT the case at The Flying Cupcake. My cupcake was SUPER moist and delicious. The frosting was sweet, but not sickly sweet. It was a perfect balance of cake and frosting. Plus it had an adorable little purple crunchy sugar flower as embelishment! The shop itself is reminiscent of being in Soho. Adorable. Quaint. Eclectically decorated... very pastel! The young woman working the counter was super nice, and incredibly helpful as we tried to decide what cupcakes to order for the party. We opted for the Salted Chocolate Carmel and the Red Velvet Elvis. My husband picked them up the day of the party. They were well packaged in a pink bakery box, and my husband commented that they opened the box for him while he was in the shop so that he could inspect them. These cupcakes were a huge hit with our guests, and happily, we had some left over after the party so that I got to try both kinds. I was not AT ALL disappointed! I would recommend The Flying Cupcake to anyone throwing a party and looking for a little something special to serve your guests! But make sure you go and give them a test drive first... I LOVE this cupcake bakery. My sister is visiting Indy and I took her there just yesterday. We had the Pretty in Pink strawberry cupcake and it was so cute and delish. I love how soft their cupcakes are and that the frostings aren't too sweet. Decor for me is important in a bakery and this shop is so cute! There are so many little adorable things to look at. I also love the candles and cards they have for sale. They have a shark week cupcake this week that looks fun. Wish they served their cupcakes with small silverware instead of offering plastic forks though. I also wish they were open later so I could have cupcakes after dinner. I can eat sweets like no other and I've eaten them all over the world. Even at well known bakeries. And I've come to realize that I'm lucky the Flying Cupcake is here in Indy and that their cupcakes consistently make me happy. Their cupcakes are some of the best I've had and I haven't had one I didn't enjoy either. The cupcakes are large and reasonably priced. Sometimes I'm bad and I can eat a whole cupcake (sometimes two) in one sitting (#fatgirl@heart) but they're definitely large enough to share. The frosting to cupcake is at a good ratio. While I love them all, some of my favorites are the Red Velvet Elvis, Auf Wiedersehen, Pretty in Pink, and Pucker Up. They have some vegan options and seasonal cupcakes as well. If you ever get distracted by the bits and bobs they have in store, please take a moment and admire how freaking cute and adorable they are! The woman at the front was rude and condescending when I asked any question. Save your money. I always support small mom and pop stores but this was ridiculous. read more

When we were in Indianapolis for the weekend we had just visited a fabulous modern quilt store and I thought the weekend could not get better. I was wrong. Sweetly wrong. We were lucky enough to search on Yelp for a bakery and it directed us here. So flyingly good. Wow! We got an assortment and ate some in the car, some in the hotel room and every darn one of those gorgeous beauties was declicious. That's unusual but true. Every cupcake not only looked terrific but was yummy, moist and worth every calorie. If I am ever lucky enough to be back in the neighborhood I will fly over here and get some more. I really wanted to like this place. The store is absolutely adorable! The store looks like something I dreamed up in kindergarten when I thought the world was still made up of pink frosting and glitter (this is a good thing). The staff was wonderful as well. They were quick to give me recommendations and very knowledgeable about ingredients. But....the cupcakes were some of the worst I had ever tasted. I was very excited about this place, so a co-worker and I grabbed a sampling of about every cupcake (in order to pick favorites for a future larger order). Precious little cupcake shop with a heavy hand of kitsch. I like! While this sweet little cupcakery leans on the tiny side, their cupcakes surely do not. Well, we found ourselves wandering around Mass. Ave. again, even in the sleet & rain. We grabbed a sandwich and picked up a few last minute gifts. I was waiting to meet hubster at the car when I looked up and saw this place. I had read reviews about their tender treats & decided to pick up a couple. The cupcakes were very good. ! I got the carrot cake for hubster & chocolate for me. It was super rich, moist & tender cake, with great creamy icing. The icing reminded me of Roselyn's Bakery when I was a kid (only better). I see some complaints about reduced icing and I agree that the whole cake should be iced. I had mine at home and did redistribute to the edges even before reading other reviews! I don't eat sweets much, but for a $3.50 treat it was just the right size, and yummy! Negative: I found it strange, as I tried to enter, that the door was locked. I examined their sign listing hours and saw that they were supposed to be open. I looked thru the store window and saw the employee out back smoking a cigarette. It was really very unprofessional and irritating to me as I stood in the rain. Other people came behind me and were waiting also. She came and unlocked the door without saying anything about it. I bought my 2 cupcakes and left. Wonder if that's company policy?? Oh & duh me, I found that there's one on the north side very close! Oh my goodness! These cupcakes are made with sprinkles of heaven, I swear! Anytime I leave carrying a little pink box or see someone out on the avenue with their little pink box, I know there's a sweet and amazing tasty treat waiting for them (or me)! My favorite Flying Cupcake flavor (so far) has been the seasonal Butterbeer offering, with butterscotch cake and root beer frosting. For normal menu options, the Red Elvis can suffice...however, I enjoy sampling the more hard-to-find flavor combos that are offered, such as the pear-ginger and orange-cranberry. Yeah, I feel a bit guilty for dropping $3-4 on a single cupcake, but my Flying Cupcake habit is minimal (I tended to only stop into the old Mass Ave location after visiting Chatham Tap). The Flying Cupcake staff are typically friendly, and were helpful when I put in an order for gluten-free, vegan cupcakes to celebrate a hyper-allergic co-worker's birthday. Probably more money than I should spend on a cupcake, but it's an occasional guilty pleasure. Plus the cupcakes are the size of two normal sized ones! The chocolate ganache cupcake is spot on. The red velvet and coconut ones I tried were good, but I'm much more partial to chocolate flavor. There was a Girl Scout thin mint cupcake that I've been meaning to try. Maybe they'll make a Samoa flavored one too! I've never had any drinks there, so I can't speak to that. I think the drink selection is limited though. Glad they moved their location. I remember when I first discovered Flying Cupcake. It was the highlight of my day if I checked facebook and saw that cookie dough was a flavor of the day. That is until the day I met the chocolate ganache cupcake. Sadly, that was about 6 years ago and things have changed. Prices have gone up (inflation, I get it), but quality has gone down. My most recent encounter was with the salted caramel chocolate, which sounded like a match made in heaven. Sadly, it was not. The frosting had a weird sticky consistency, and the cake was dry, until you got to the middle which was filled with caramel. My first time into the cupcake shop was this past weekend. I'm pretty particular with my cupcakes. I'm not one that loves a lot of icing with my cupcakes and walking in I was a little saddened to see that the icing was piled high. However that is a very small issue. I ended up ordering the salted chocolate caramel cupcake via recommendation of the staff working that day. The chocolate caramel ganache on top was not too much but it is a cupcake that you would definitely want something to drink with. It was very moist and full of flavor. The seating is limited inside. They have a couple of tables off to the side and a bar that sits inside the front window. There is metered parking on the street but if you visit on a Sunday parking is free! The price will range between $3 and $3.75 per cupcake but the jumbo cupcakes are just that jumbo and are worth the splurge. I actually missed this place the first time I drove by because the store front is teeny tiny. Once I found it though, I was glad I did. You'll probably need a fork for these. There's tons of icing, and they're huge. Every flavor I've had, I've liked. The Bart Simpson (Butterfinger), Here Comes the Bride, Red Velvet Elvis, The Honeybee, and more. My only warning is they are REALLY sweet. I can't eat one all at once, and I have a relatively high sugar tolerance. The staff is pleasant and helpful. They seem to close at 7 (check to make sure), so don't expect any late-night runs. I know they're made from scratch and are unique, but wow, they add up quickly if you're getting them for a group. I'd really like to see a discount for orders of a half-dozen or more. read more

Love, love, love, love, love. Flying Cupcake has been my family's go-to for birthdays and other occasions for the past few years, and we are always happy with our choices. The frosting is plentiful, and I love the ever-changing variety of flavors. I can stick with my favorite Red Velvet Elvis or try a seasonal flavor. In true Yelp fashion, they just started a new line featuring ingredients from local stores, like Sun King beer and Just Pop In popcorn. The bakery is adorable, with lots of fun, mismatched patterns everywhere from the walls to the tables and chairs. Yesterday I'm pretty sure they were playing the Disney station on Pandora. Cupcakes + Disney = match made in happiness heaven. Also, I have to give a huge shoutout to the staff working this weekend who were part of my early birthday surprise. A friend was visiting from DC and I kept telling her about the wonders of Flying Cupcake. She arranged to have a personalized cupcake and happy birthday sign waiting for me when we visited. When I saw the food truck down by the canal I absolutely HAD to try the cupcakes here. Since we went there after the race, they were almost sold out. We got the last of the three flavours they had. The vanilla was super cute with colored sprinkles on top. It just melted it in my mouth, the cake texture was so soft and delicious and the icing was the best thing about it. I don't normally order vanilla cupcakes but this has completely changed my opinion towards it. The red chocolate chip cupcake was the best ever. I have honestly never had a red velvet + chocolate chip cupcake or cake before but I think this combination goes so well together. The icing on top was rather too sweet for my liking however if eaten with the cake it's super yum. The pretty in pink just looked great I honestly found it super flossy and extremely sweet. I think these cupcakes did justice to the term "sugar rush". I wish I could try more flavours and I hope they open more outlets in downtown as there are hardly any bakeries around the place. read more

Most of the time when I walk by this place (usually on my way to Chatham Tap, next door), they are closed. Last night they stayed open late for the Indy Reads event Scavenge the Ave, and I'm so glad they did! When you walk in, you are hit in the face with the awesome smell of cake - it was enough to stop my hemming and hawing about whether or not I would be eating a cupcake. My friend and I split a chocolate cupcake with peanut butter frosting (YUM), but they also had red velvet, cappuccino, birthday cake and several other flavors. After tax, it was $3 for a cupcake, which really isn't bad considering what I've forked out for smaller less delicious desserts in restaurants. Very impressive cupcake shop. Most cupcakes average around $3 but are cheaper by the dozen. I had the Koo Koo for Coconuts (coconut cupcake filled with coconut cream topped with cream cheese and coconut flakes.) Wowie, it was very moist and coconuty. I love when shops fill their cupcakes-adds a whole other level of decadence. My friend got a sugar cookie, which was reported being, "meh, okay" with the icing being, "pretty good, actually." At this location they had dog cupcakes but nothing vegan or gluten free, like their site mentions. I could have missed them though. Apparently they sometimes have dairy-free and gluten free Cinnamon rolls on the weekends. Check out their Facebook page for what flavors will be at what locations. Something I thought was unique were glass containers of free plastic cupcake decorating novelties you can put on your purchased cupcakes, like the classic smiling clown head. They also sell misc. candy, if that suits your sweet tooth. There was only one person working and he didn't seem happy to have a new customer and both cupcakes we got were really dry. This is absolutely not a regular occurrence, but the fact that it even happened worries me. I've got some coworkers coming in from out of town and this is the closest location, but I may take them out to Greenwood instead to make sure we're getting the best product. The Flying Cupcake is a very cute chain of shops. They have a rotating menu of cupcakes that suit diverse tastes (classic flavors, unusual combinations, vegan options, and even "pupcakes" for dogs). Their Facebook account posts the flavors of the day (which differ store to store, if you MUST HAVE a particular one). Their stores are decorated in a cutesy way - so cute that we did my daughter's one-year-old photos here. They also have a couple of food trucks that take their cupcakes on the road. I live on the South Side and was always happy to see the truck parked at Greenwood Park Mall. The only thing I would like to see from the Flying Cupcake would be more drink options in-store. They are extremely limited, but drinks are needed for such dense desserts. The merchandise (cake stands, toys, candy, kitsch kitchenware) is pretty thin too; I would keep a larger stock in the store. I currently live in California but am originally from Houston. I was ADDICTED to Crave Cupcakes in Houston, but while visiting my boyfriend in Indy we came to this place. I was a little skeptical, but very pleasantly surprised. On our first visit, we took home a red velvet Elvis, peanut butter blackout, and Razzamatazz. All three were fantastic. The cake was moist and the frosting was light and rich with flavor. Being used to places like Crave and Crumbs, the prices didn't phase me...but if you have never paid over $3 for a cupcake, you may have some sticker shock. We went three days in a row, and I made sure to take another red velvet elvis for the plane ride home. I will definitely make sure we hit them up when I am back in Indy. read more

I think the cupcake baking fad is really tired, but I'll make an exception for the Flying Cupcake because it's so delicious and has vegan options. I only go to the RAW, vegan and gluten free store on Illinois, so I can't say anything about the one downtown. The staff is really friendly and knowledgeable about all the ingredients in all the frosting and batter flavors. The actual baked goods are delicious and look cute without any try-too-hard desperate gimmicky nonsense. They are also really great for placing orders. My boss from work had treated my co-workers and I for some cupcakes. My friend and I were in charge of getting the cupcakes since we drive to IUPUI for class and the bakery was close by. I really didn't know what I was expecting, especially since I have never heard of this bakery but I was very pleased. When we got there, it was easy to find, it was noticeable. The bakery was little but too cute. We had a dozen to order and I didn't call ahead, we were afraid there wouldn't be enough. Needless to say, there was enough and plenty of choices to choose from. The lady behind the counter was very nice and patient with us. We took a while to decide what all we needed. Would definitely come back. The place is great to go grab a cupcake, sit down and relax.
