Randomly drove by this little bakery. Looks like they do a lot of custome cakes and the front of the shop offers cupcakes, chocolate covered pretzels and other treats. Vanilla Bean Bakery has moved to 2325 W. 86th Street (next to Pucchini's). I stumbled upon the new location by coincidence. Kristy is the baker and proprietor of this independently owned local shop. She is welcoming and friendly. She offers a selection of cupcake flavors that she ices fresh after you order. I selected a Chocolate Caramel Cupcake. Kristy quickly went back to decorate my cake. The cake was beautiful, super fresh and the icing was light and creamy. The shop is filled with adorable treats for Halloween. Kristy takes orders for events and offers a package deal for decorate-your-own-cupcakes that would be cute for a birthday party. There is plenty of parking in the strip mall lot. It was a Monday, they were closed, I was so disappointed because I needed treats for my sister's birthday. I can't describe how happy I was when the gentleman came out and let me in . Vanilla Bean has moved to 1510 W 86th Street, north west corner of Ditch and 86th next to Puccini Pizza. They were closed when we drive by but the dance looked a bit bigger than the previous location. When I saw a note on the other location I was afraid they'd closed. They have the best cupcakes. The new location of this bakery was located right by my job so I figured I would stop by to satisfy my sweet craving. I love the set up of this bakery. Clean, comfy, and cute! They also have more than just baked goods setting out. You have your choice of different candies, gummies, and homemade trail mixes. The price was reasonable, especially considering the last-minute request. They had the great idea of wrapping half of the cake pops as "take home" goodies for the guests. I officially love vanilla bean bakery! I have lived near this store most of my life but never stopped in. I happened to be in crunch and needed some cupcakes for a friend's birthday and I'm so glad I trusted them with my dessert needs. The cupcakes were very fresh, moist and flavorful and the icing was delicious without being overly sweet. The wide variety of flavors means there is something for everybody and I recommend mix matching. The associate (who may have been the owner, not sure) was incredibly sweet and helpful as I had several questions and tend to be indecisive. SO impressive. I'd been calling around trying to find a German chocolate cupcake for my sister's birthday. Nowhere had them and I finally called Vanilla Bean Bakery. They didn't have any either, but different from the other places, the owner instead asked, "How many do you want? We'll make them and put them in the oven for you right now!" Seriously how impressive is that?! He was so friendly and their customer service was amazing. When I picked them up a few hours later, the woman at the counter told me they'd just been taken out of the oven and iced from scratch. They smelled AMAZING and they tasted just as good. Another awesome part? The store is super cute and has incredible little gifts. For example, they have a lot of individually-wrapped, chocolate-covered Oreos that are themed. For only $1.50, they're the cutest mini birthday gifts. They also have a big glass display full of mini desserts, like cake pops. They even have birthday cards and other little elements that will make your celebration perfect. Now, this is definitely a purchase-and-go bakery, so don't expect to sit down and enjoy your cupcake. I was recommended a bunch and stuck to my classic favorites which BOTH delivered - cookies 'n' cream and Boston creme pie. The icing is a bit stiff for my liking but softened by the time I reached home. What struck me the most? It's real, honest ingredients, done well. There is also a display case at the order counter where you can see a variety of cupcakes, some cookie options, and more chocolate options. The staff were patient and helpful and we were soon able to make our selections. It isn't the widest variety of baked goods around. I didn't see a lot of pastries here. Super disappointed. Ordered 8 cupcakes for my daughter birthday two days in advance on Uber Eats. Order was accepted for the delivery window of 2:45 - 3:15 PM on her birthday. Guess what? This locally owned bakery is located in a strip center near 86th and Township Line Road in the same building as the more well known Lulu's Coffee and Bakehouse. If I remember correctly, it has the spot previously held by a Roselyn Bakery and sits just down from Fresh Thyme. While I'm comfortable giving Vanilla Bean a 4-star review, mostly on the strength of stellar customer service, it's worth noting that I'd probably call this more a neighborhood bakery than a destination bakery. One review mentioned that it really wasn't worth a 30-minute drive and that's an opinion I'd likely agree with, though I'll also admit that I drove out of my way to come to this side of town today and had eyed a stop here as part of my agenda. That said, I wouldn't simply drive from my Lawrence home to check out Vanilla Bean. While that may sound critical, it's not meant to be. Vanilla Bean offers a quality product and even better service. While the selection seemed somewhat modest, there's a decent diversity of flavor present. Vanilla Bean offers cupcakes, cake truffles, cookies, and brownies. There's also indication they bake cakes, though I didn't see any present at my visit. Among the cupcakes, they offer right around 30 flavors that seem to rotate. There's also about a half dozen seasonal flavors along with the availability to get vegan and sugar-free options. Most of the cupcakes individually run at $3, though they obviously decrease in price depending upon quantity. They also offer specials. It should be noted that they are carry-out only and it appeared the only drink options were basically some bottled waters and canned sodas that were in a refrigerated area. I really was only looking for dessert from my just completed lunch - so I grabbed one chocolate cupcake. It's definitely smaller than the gourmet cupcake shops around town, though I felt like it was a decent size for the price. They packed it nicely and I ended up heading outside to enjoy it at some tables right outside Fresh Thyme. The decor is light and inviting; the employee who was working was super friendly and helpful. If I'm being realistic, the rating is probably more a 3.5, though with the positive customer service I'm curving upward as it was a positive experience at a reasonable price and I thought the quality was just fine. In business since around 2010, Vanilla Bean Bakery continues to be family/locally owned and did a semi-brisk business when I was there on a Saturday afternoon. While I wouldn't go out of your way, if you're in the area it's a solid option to satisfy your sweet tooth while supporting an indie local bakery. The real surprise find were the decorated Oreos, we picked the Valentines theme ones but they had a ton to choose from. A superior cupcakery and bakery, that is not pretentious and manages to keep things lovely and amazing. I had discovered this shop about 5- 6 years ago when I first moved to Indy. It has become the benchmark that I measure all cupcake shops against, and let me tell you, I have not found any that rival this baker in flavor, texture, and fresh quality. Although this is my first purchase at VB, I cannot imagine how anyone would rate this place less than 5 stars! I ordered 18 iced, decorated sugar cookies for a baby shower to give as favors. Called the bakery on Monday and needed the cookies by Friday afternoon; the very sweet woman I talked to said that was no problem whatsoever. I requested they be decorated as she wished with some element of pink, and hand wrapped individually (which was offered at no extra charge). When I arrived Friday to pick them up, I couldn't have been more pleased. They were beautifully, professionally decorated and the variations were adorable (I chose the onesie theme). The reason I gave the place a 4 and not a 5 was that the chocolate icing over powered the delicate vanilla cake. It was still amazing though. I had 2 vanilla raspberry, strawberry, chocolate covered strawberry, cookies n cream, and boston cream. I've only tried three of the five mentioned, and so far they've been pretty amazing! The chocolate covered strawberry has half a strawberry on top that is actually covered in chocolate. The chocolate icing is sweet, but not overpowering. There was even a surprise in the middle of the cake....STRAWBERRY CREAM!!!! The cake was a little dry, but still tasted pretty good. The vanilla raspberry is soooo amazing. The cupcake is topped with a fresh raspberry topped with raspberry icing. The filling is of raspberry jelly; it's soo good and not too sweet. I had a bite of the cookies n cream, and it was pretty sweet. I wasn't that big of a fan of that one, but the other two I had definitely made up for what that lacked. I would love to say I'm giving this review because my Sister tried the cupcakes I bought her from Vanilla Bean Bakery to be delivered the night before Mother's Day on Uber Eats, but I'm writing this review because Vanilla Bean reneged on the order. I love cupcakes. My obsession has almost become a disorder. Tonight when my husband suggested I handle things on the dessert front, I immediately headed to Vanilla Bean Bakery. We tried the Butterscotch, Boston Cream, and a Vanilla cupcake with vanilla frosting - the best measure of any cupcake purveyor, in my humble opinion. I wanted to love these. I tried to love these. I just don't love these. The Vanilla cupcake could have easily come from a grocery store bakery. The Butterscotch was somehow both bland and overly sweet. The Boston Cream was just ick.
