I'm so happy I found this place. I have very, very thick, smooth but corse hair that overwhelms my face, and a lot of stylists don't seem to know what to do with it. All I've ever wanted is a simple medium cut with invisible layers that brings movement and volume back into my hair. Yuichi is a wizard with shearing scissors in a way I didn't know was possible. Unlike pretty much every stylist I've ever seen, he actually accepted and believed me when I said I am VERY lazy when it comes to styling--and cut my hair accordingly. My hair looks great AND it's low maintenance. At my old salon (a very hyped and expensive place), I always felt like I wasn't fully valued or listened to because I wasn't spending $400 on balayage or whatever. But here, I feel like they really just appreciate the art of a good haircut. Both hairstylists were so friendly and warm. Easy to talk to, but they also make it easy to sit & relax and not feel compelled to talk. They were both so inviting and comfortable to be around. Because of the pandemic, my favorite guy at Fellow Barber never came back to work. Super sad about it, but I still need to get my mop chopped. After a bunch of tries with other stylists, I was pretty let down and in desperate need of a cut - after some fervent googling, I decided that The Flying Row made the cut (pun intended). In a city ripe with $15 window ads for haircuts (and fake pictures showing styles they clearly can't replicate), Andy has distinguished himself as a hair stylist every person should feel comfortable seeing. It's as if he knew the style that would suit my hair best from the first visit. Whether it was a quick shape up for an important work meeting, or a close crop for a wedding, Andy has always spun the chair around to my delight. No unevenness, no nicks on the back of my neck, no clutching the chair handles in fear of going too short. A haircut with Andy is an investment that's always netted me a positive return! You explain what you want and he gives you that, without requiring a few days to grow into the look. Never rushed, always courteous to ask before snipping away further. Lastly, aside from the haircut, Andy is a genuinely cool person. I never understood why people go into salons and put earbuds in while a stylist works on their nails or feet. If you have conversation to start, Andy will entertain you. He won't make you feel awkward or ask you off-putting questions other barbers around the city might ask. The prices for haircut and beard trim are super reasonable and his barber shop is just "cool;" as a matter of fact, the whole block is cool. Coffee shops, bars, and restaurants are plenty--- the location really couldn't be better. I have been going to Andy to get my haircut for the past three years, and I get a haircut roughly once every six weeks, so this review is based on the roughly 20 times that I have visited Andy. I'm convinced that the marker of a good stylist and good haircut is that you actually look good immediately after the haircut. It sounds obvious, I know, but I have gotten haircuts in the past and have seen people who have gotten haircuts where they go through this weird-looking phase for a few days or few weeks immediately after the haircut because the change is too drastic or the hair needs some time to grow out a bit. I don't get this effect with Andy. Instead, immediately after the haircut, while I'm looking at the mirror, I'm thinking to myself "Damn . . . I look handsome again" instead of "Man, I look weird, but I know I'll look good again once my hair grows out a little bit". I'm sure many guys will understand what I'm talking about. Not sure if it applies to girls, but I'm guessing girls will understand what I'm saying also. Andy is really detail-oriented and he remembers my preferences and the weird things about how my hair grows out. He also recommends small modifications over time as he learns more about your hair. He will always explain what he's going to do and will ask for your opinion, so he's a good guy to go to if you're thinking about something slightly different or if you want someone to collaborate or bounce ideas off of. Andy has worked at various salons and barbershops throughout the city over the past three years, and I've followed him wherever he goes. UPDATE: I went to The Flying Row to get my hair cut by Andy before my wedding. I told him when my wedding was, and he adjusted how much he was going to cut so that my hair would be at optimal length on my wedding day. Andy spent extra time cutting my hair and making sure everything turned out good this time since he knew it was for a special occasion, so I really appreciate him for that. I just took a look at some pictures of the wedding, and I'm really happy with the way things turned out. I strongly recommend other guys to check out this place if you need a haircut. UPDATE: Andy has started to attract some of his talented former coworkers to his place, so for the past two times, I've been going to Nadia for my haircut. She used to work with Andy at a previous place, and I'm really happy with my haircuts. She has cool personal style and has an eye for what kind of haircut or hair style would fit best for you. Usually when I get my haircut, I decide not to get any product in my hair when the stylist offers, but I decided to let Nadia style my hair with pomade because I trust her and liked my hair cut. He talks to you about your hair and how it works (if you're interested) and is incredibly thoughtful and expert in helping you decide what would work the best for you. I've been going to The Flying Row for several months and getting my hair cut by Seven, who was amazing. This time I got my hair cut by Yuichi, who asked what I wanted done. I told him I wanted the sides shorter and the top about the same just cleaned up. He said ok and then went on to cut off more than half of the hair off the top of my head before I could say anything. Went in for a walk in, part of the way through my haircut another customer walked in that the barber had confused me for, that had scheduled an appointment. The barber asked me if I could speed through my haircut because she didn't want to get off schedule, and feeling I had a gun to my head I said yes out of fear my hair would be really messed up if I argued at all. The barber then agreed to charge me for half of a haircut and I checked my credit card statement and I was charged for a full haircut. Upon getting home I really got to see how uneven my haircut was, how there were clear spots missed and more. While the barber said I could come in at another time to "finish my haircut", I don't feel comfortable going back, and for a shop that charges that much the service did not reflect the price. read more

Andy is BY FAR the beat hair stylist I've ever had. Amazing attention to detail and artistic vision for hair. He's truly a word class stylist. But more than that, he's a really great person. I always look forward to catching up with him at each appointment, and he's the most genuinely nice, fun stylist to see. I could go on about how glad I was to find him amongst the sea of options that New York has to offer, but I'll let the following story illustrate how highly I think of both his skills and personality: I was seeing him at the salon he worked at before he left to start the Flying Row, and after he left, the previous salon was "unable" to release his information (salons can be competitive when it comes to keeping their customers, but the fact that they wouldn't share his new information meant I would no longer be going there anyways so they really had nothing to gain). That said, I couldn't figure out where he had moved. My girlfriend can attest to the fact that I spent HOURS trying to figure out which salon he had moved to with no luck, and every haircut since then I took time to try to find his new location online again. Finally, over a year later, his name finally surfaced on his Flying Row Yelp page for his new salon, and I booked him right away. I'm very picky when it comes to haircuts, and he is the kind of stylist who will leave a long term impression on you - in a very good way.
