I've been dreading finding a barber and stumbled on upon Ross at Second Ave Barbers. Recommended by a model from the city that swore by Ross. Traveled about 40min for my appointment. Ross has been cutting in New York since 89'. Super professional and exactly what I was looking for. Very happy with the outcome and even gave me a recommendation on a taper in the back. After getting a professional haircut I wasn't happy with at a salon a month ago, I ended up making it worse when I tried to cut it myself. That's when I realized I needed to see someone who could undo the mess I'd created. I happened to see a TikTok video about someone's experience at Second Avenue Barbers and the guy in the video had wavy-curly hair similar to mine, which convinced me to check the place out. After reading some Google reviews, I decided to go in as soon as possible. I entered the barbershop and didn't have to wait long. When it was my turn with Ross, he was friendly right from the start. I showed him a few inspirational photos and he listened to what I wanted. The result was amazing (for context, I'm a woman with naturally curly hair). Ross was calm, welcoming, and instantly made me feel like I was in good hands. He took his time to even out all the uneven spots and fix the mess I'd made. I walked out feeling so much better about my hair. I'll definitely be going back to him. read more

I haven't been here in a couple years. So why am I rating now? Well, I used to live around here and this was my regular shop, and now that I live elsewhere, I really, really miss this great shop. You know how pretty much everything is more expensive in the City? Well, one major exception is actually a haircut for a dude. Granted it's been a few years, but as of 2009, it was only $11 for a haircut here. I now pay $17-$19 for a far inferior cut in Connecticut. I unfortunately don't remember the name of the guy who most often cut my hair - he was one of the middle guys, both in terms of chair position and age, if that helps - but wow, what a barber. Perhaps the second or third time he cut my hair, it was after a gap of some 6-9 months (in the interim, I had had one of the other guys cut it). Not only did he remember exactly how I liked it cut, he actually remembered better than I did! He mentioned something about how I liked the sides relatively "straighter", and at first I said no - but several minutes later I realized that I had requested exactly that my last time with him (again, some 6-9 months earlier)! I immediately apologized, and realized that this guy was a keeper. But as it happens, pretty much every guy here is quite good, so don't worry about that. The guys are professional and cordial, but not overly talkative - which is exactly how I like it. You get a great cut with serious attention to detail (cuts take about 20 minutes here), including a razor to the back of your neck (amazing how rare that's becoming). And again, this was only $11 in 2009 (even if they've since gone up to $13-14, it's obviously still a great deal). So unless everything has changed here in the past couple years, I give this shop my strongest recommendation. read more

Yosef is a magician with a straight razor as a wand. He practiced shaving on a balloon. No joke. I live in LA but stop here every time im in town for a great haircut and shave. Only $28 for the combo, and they are better than anyone ive been to in LA for twice the price. read more

Not joking, the guy literally spent 10 minutes maximum on my haircut while checking his phone and talking to another customer. I was so stunned he finished in 5-10 minutes I didn't know what to say. Only come here for a rush job. read more

Yosef is the best I've found for a bald guy like me who like his hair cut really short. He doesn't just give you a quick buzz cut and a trim around the ears; he uses about 4 different clippers and a razor to do the subtle things that make all the difference. He's just got a really good eye for giving people flattering haircuts. It's fun just to sit and watch him work his magic--never a wasted motion. His regular customers range from mom's with kids (mom's seem to swear by him) to bearded hipsters. His chair is almost never empty, but he's so efficient there's never a long wait. read more

The absolute worst hair cut I have ever received. The guy who is in the first chair (Boris?) sat me down and proceeded to mangle my head. After about 20 minutes he starts to go into his finishing sequence and looks at me as if he was done. I kid you not there were patches on my head and not a single part of the haircut could be deemed acceptable by anyone with two eyes. I've been going to Ross for over 10 years. Fantastic service at a great price.

Lived in NYC on and off since 2000, this is hands down my favorite. Cool, low key guys who do a really good job. Customers seem to run the gamut from older guys with classic cuts, to hipstery dudes with the sides shaved look, to shaved head guys getting the razor treatment. I rarely come on Yelp, but this place is exceptionally good. read more

My husband just walked out of here with patches in his hair around the back. He normally goes to another in our UES neighborhood but we were walking by. Big mistake to go in. Seriously low standards or employees must be writing the other reviews. If you are getting a complete buzz cut or head shaved maybe, but to cut hair with scissors, no way. No measuring, just wing it. Wouldn't want them to sterilize anything. Dirty scissors, brushes combs. Oh and for the pleasure of a lopsided cut, you get to put $16 plus tip if you so choose.
