Fabulous food and fantastic service. The fish and chips were insanely fresh and the chicken sandwich had the perfect amount of heat to satisfy those of us that like some heat, if you prefer no heat/spice they will accommodate. The portions are generous and their prices are reasonable. The server was helpful and attentive without being bothersome. A local recommended this place to us, so we decided to check it out. I started with the Rum Toddy, which was quite tasty. I now want to try making cardamom honey to add to a regular Hot Toddy. I had the Yellow Coconut Curry with chicken. It was nice and comforting for a cold night, but the chicken was half-shredded - the kitchen clearly made pulled chicken, but didn't pull the chicken enough because there were clumps of unshredded chicken. Great restaurant. We were in town for a week skiing and ate here twice. It is actually the only restaurant we ate at, because we got groceries and fixed the rest of the food ourselves. Very varied menu. My wife and son are gluten-free and they have several dishes that they can make gluten-free. We all especially loved the Fish and Chips. The batter was light and airy. I loved the traditional malt vinegar, but their tartar sauce was also excellent. The french fries were awesome, but we didn't love the poutine. I didn't like them in the states, but I thought, "maybe they are better in Canada where it was created." My opinion is the same. They take great fries and cover them with gravy that makes them both soggy and a super heavy dish. I loved the cheese curds, though. Hopefully, Canada will let me come back. read more

Service is friendly but lacking; always understaffed when we've been there. Most food is not made in house; it is bought already prepared and then mixed with other things like the carnitas & pork mixed with chips, salad, or on street tacos. I love the Flying Steamshovel for a weekend brunch, or a dinner with friends -- which is exactly what my family and I went out to do earlier this week. They've got that post-ski hangout vibe that still works on a June evening. We ordered their feature starter plate for the table: prosciutto-wrapped asparagus with grilled halloumi, which they were kind enough to modify to accommodate my mother who does not eat pork. The asparagus came on a creamy sauce and a sweet balsamic glaze was drizzled on the steaming halloumi. As for myself, I ordered the Soup du Jour -- Tandoori Chicken -- the perfect balance of spices and sweetness, served with a buttered and toasted slice of baguette. My mother ordered the House Salad with chicken. Her portion was generous enough that she didn't finish and packed it in a takeaway box, but a sneaky fork stab revealed fresh arugula, salty-sweet cranberries, crunchy cucumbers, and a light vinaigrette. I did this as she jokingly debated the pronunciation of Moscow Mule with our laughing server, which was a drink presented in a rustic copper cup with candied ginger and two slices of lime resting atop on a skewer. I didn't have a sip, but my mother got everyone at the table to try what was, reportedly, tart and delectable My ever-predictable father ordered a John Candy. Two marks of a good burger are a raving appetite as soon as you see one, and an inability to finish the last few bites -- which the John Candy passed with flying colours. The sauces complemented the simple flavour of the patty, and the back bacon added an unexpected layer. While not the best burger I've had in my life, I can clock a reorder when I taste on. Off the main strip in Rossland, BC. From the outside, the stucco exterior doesn't garner too much of a reaction but it is a hotel (upstairs) and a nice gastropub on the ground floor. Very spacious interior with the trappings of the Victorian era that many of the buildings in Rossland identifies with. Wood paneling and dental adorn the windows. Definitely a local spot where all the residents come out for food, spirits, and live music. Lots of room for a lot of people wanting to warm the hearts and bodies on a cold weekend night in Rossland. Food was good. Nice variety for people wanting the standards such as burgers or something more healthier such as the Poke Bowl. Lots of beers on tap with BC and Canadian offerings such as Phillips, Steamworks, Fourwinds, and a Rossland Mosaic IPA. We've been here a few times over our trips to Rossland, and have continually been impressed by the flavors. I'd have to say this is my favorite spot in town, with an eclectic menu and solid drinks and beer options. Several people had recommended this restaurant to us, so we stopped in for our fist Rossland dinner. To reward myself for a long-ish snow shoe outing earlier, I decided to try the fish and chips. Wow, do these guys know how to fry up some fish! I received two jinormous pieces of flaky, non-oily haddock encased in golden crunchiness that were as good as any I have had anywhere. The chips were fine as well, but my husband ate most of them since the fish filled me up! His tacos--one each of fish, carnitas and brisket--were also tasty and had nice touches to up the flavors. The manager then told us and another 2 people who then walked out we needed to wait to be seated, (a Dad and 2 kids, who were not going to bar only people waiting for a seat at that point ) after 10 minutes manager came up and told us we should leave, all while bartender was at empty bar drinking a soda?? Wow! I've lived here almost my whole life and the flying Steamshovel has changed a few times and I think this time is the best so far. I was there a couple weeks ago for lunch and a tall waiter with a beard and glasses served us and he was AMAZING and classy and sooo funny. He was attentive to us and even took the time to engage in my partners jokes! He was quick and informative and so kind. He made the already great and improved atmosphere a great experience. Now onto the food! It was Fantastic! My fish was so crispy and so tasty and the salad was light and fresh! My partners burger was over the top amazing and the chilli fries were to die for! My partner joked with the waiter about maybe getting a bucket of the chilli fries and that caught on to the next table making them all laugh and have fun as well! So impressed guys ! The Shovel is a winner for hungry travelers to downtown Rossland. It has a storied past which you can read all about in detail on their website. Suffice to say it was almost the victim of western Canada's first helicopter flight and crash back in the old days. But it has survived and is now one of the oldest saloons in operation in the province. Half the year it plays host to skiers and boarders dropping in from legendary Red Mountain, only five minutes up the road. The other half of the year sees ever-growing crowds from the two-wheel set as Rossland and this part of the Kootenays becomes a mecca for mountain biking. The Shovel is a watering hole and feed trough for locals and visitors alike. It features a lively entertainment schedule of local and visiting talent, a pool table, plenty of television screens for sporting events and a full pub-style kitchen. You can even engage in a round of neglin while waiting for your meal. Neglin? Look it up! The service is fast and attentive. The bar is well-stocked and carries a good assortment of regional brews on tap. On the day we visited, we missed any kind of substantial breakfast and then traveled for three hours which left us with substantial appetites. I didn't do a lot of reading but I can tell you there must be close to 100 items on the menu. I went straight to the Shovel Burger that includes white cheddar and red onions in this signature plate. My lovely partner ordered the chicken breast sandwich. Both were served on very fresh and expansive Kaiser rolls and both bits of protein were cooked perfectly. My burger was juicy; the cheddar was handcut and nicely melted. The onions were a great add. I detected a little garlic in the seasoning and there seemed to be a little 'house' style sauce involved. Although the fries looked good as I glanced a the plates of nearby patrons, I opted for soup. The soup turned out to be a kind of chili. This was a good accompaniment with the burger but really didn't hit all the marks for a chili purist like myself. In fact, the addition of corn and the dominant tomato flavours, tasty as they were, moved it out of the chili realm and into a thick soup category. My partner loved her chicken dish and remarked on the fresh quality of the salad. Prices are inline with pubs in the area. In fact, I'd suggest you get a little more for your dollar in quality and portions. We'll be back! read more
