Either they took me for a sucker, or the membership has been raised to $5 at the door, but it's worth every penny regardless.

I have to start this review with the worst part...bad clam chowder in New England. Read on for…read moredeets. The location is nice enough, though the advertised lake view is obscured by trees. The bartender was very nice. The beer selection was heavily weighted towards hazy NEIPAs, which I understand--they sell! (I teach beverage at the Culinary Institute of America). I ordered two beers, a corn lager and a maibock. The lager was good, but the maibock was technically flawed, with diacetyl (movie popcorn butter smell) and I think some acetalaldehyde (cooked vegetable) smells/flavors. Not terrible, not great, and 10 oz. pours were priced like pints at other breweries. Here comes the bad part, though. We also ordered some clam chowder and pretzel bites. We got the food at our inside table and the chowder was the worst we've ever had in our lives. Campbells and Progresso well exceed the quality of this 'soup'. It didn't taste like clams, there was no discernible seasoning or flavor from onions or garlic, and it had obviously been thickened (into glop) with cornstarch. It might also have been scorched during cooking. It was so bad that we each took two bites and had to stop. And we are *not* picky eaters. The pretzel bites (for $15) were plentiful, but obviously a commodity product heated up...barely. The beer cheese dip was good and the mustard had a nice kick, but that much money for a pile of frozen pretzel bites is ridiculous. So, $40+ for two 10oz beers and food so bad we threw 90% of it in the garbage. The staff was nice enough, the live music outside was bad, but the food. Holy moly the food was terrible. Oh, and the beers weren't great. We will not be going back, and don't think you should go either.

How fun is this place? Quaint and laid back. Weird beers, weird beer-based drinks, pubby food and…read morereally delightful staff. Wine slushies for the kid in you. The brat was REALLY GOOD! Served in a buttered and toasted bun. DELICIOUS. If you are shlepping around with nothing to do... waltz in! Just worth the visit!

The inside of the brewery is very nice and unpretentious with a lot of seating, and they also have a large outdoor patio with tons of Adirondack chairs and a few picnic tables. The beer was very good. We tried a couple IPAs, a coconut porter, a barleywine, and a maibock. The barleywine was on nitro which was surprising, but it was actually really lovely. Definitely stop in for a few beers and a laid back vibe!

For me, that added a little bit of fun and charm to Barnstable Brewing. That is, as long as you also remember to put out good beer, which they do (I certainly wouldn't want "Wicked Bland" beer). I enjoyed my Porter - oops, excuse me, PORTAH - but I if were ordering a flight or at least a second pour, it would have been that coffee blonde ale, unique and distinctive. The brewery is also dog friendly with food trucks outside. Seating is at the bar, high tables, and an area with sofas in the corner. Over the past few years, there's been a growing number of breweries on the Cape. This is one you should consider.

I can guarantee that good percentage of people that read this may ask themselves, "Where is…read moreOsterville?" It is a quaint little village in Barnstable, MA with heaps of "old money" and traditional Cape Cod charm. Although I have lived my entire life in Massachusetts, I had never heard of, let alone stepped foot in Osterville until last weekend when I worked at a wedding at Oyster Harbors Club; a private, members only club. Let me preface this review by saying that it is based solely on my experience as an outside vendor working at the club - not as a member or guest. I work as an assistant for a boutique event planning and consultation firm, and we recently coordinated a wedding reception held at this venue. The club itself is beautiful - tall ceilings, crown molding, beautiful carpets and hardwood floors, a large ballroom, a fabulous patio with gorgeous lawns and water views... even the bathrooms were gorgeous! It was easy to see why the couple fell in love with this venue. The bride's family had a close friend who was a member and offered to sponsor the couple (non-members) so they could have their wedding there. It was apparent that the catering staff and management was not accustomed to working with outside coordinators, but overall, things went smoothly. Here's my biggest complaint about this venue: During a wedding, vendors (wedding coordinators, assistants, DJ's, band members, etc.) are offered dinner. Vendors typically work a 10-15 hour day for a wedding and don't have another opportunity to eat, so many of them actually require a meal in their contracts; it is considered standard practice in the industry. They are usually fed whatever meal the guests receive, or a suitable, albeit less expensive alternative consisting of a protein, vegetable and starch. The hosts of the wedding are charged for each vendor meal that is ordered. That being said, my colleagues and I sat down to have our meal during this wedding and were completely shocked when we were offered a lunch-sized portion chicken Caesar salad! We weren't even given bread or water to accompany the meal! Normally, I would not complain but since we coordinated the wedding, we were well aware of how much money the bride and groom paid for each vendor meal... and a chicken Caesar salad was simply unacceptable for the price they were charged. While I would not consider myself an "expert" in the food service industry, but I have worked for a number of higher end restaurants, yacht clubs and catering companies in Boston and Martha's Vineyard over the last 10 years. Never in my experience as an assistant or even as a server was I ever given salad to sustain me through a 12 hour workday. I sincerely hope that Oyster Harbors Club does not make this practice routine, and I urge those who plan to hold an event at this venue to request a detailed cost breakdown for the guest and vendor meals from management.
