    the great speech of franklin

The Franklin House was built in 1855 as the private residence of Peter Douglas, who in 1859 went on to sell it to Bennet Franklin. In 1877 the building was converted to a Hotel and Public House which eventually in 1910 under new ownership was renamed "Queen's Hotel". In 1927 it ceased to operate as a hotel with the enforcement of the Canada Temperance Act, but has continued to be used for commercial purposes. The Franklin House has now completely renovated and serves as a bar, pub, sport bar (NHL, NFL, UFC...) and a gathering place for the locals! Love the patio here and with the heated outdoor lamps, you can even enjoy a drink when the weather gets a little chilly. According to sources, the ghost of a young woman named Jessie has purportedly haunted the grounds since the mid-19th century, and her presence is still felt. If you looking for a place to chill with your friends in Streetsville, The Franklin House just might be the one!

I've came here a few times but because of Paint Nite (which they host upstairs, large and spacious area so I think it's a good place to host something if you have a large group of people). During the painting event, you're able to order food so I just got a regular poutine. It was a while ago but I remember it tasting pretty good - even my mom said that as well. I came back recently and I was debating between the butter chicken poutine or the cajun bites one. Waitress suggested butter chicken because the cook who was in that night makes it the best. IT WAS GOOD. I really liked it. Lots of flavour and not too spicy. I'm not sure what size I ended up getting (I said S but it looked really big lol). Was reaaaaaallly greasy but thats expected cuz its butter chicken. There are food specials on the chalkboard which I wanted to try but I wanted the poutine more. I'll def be coming back again. There's so many more things I wanna try!

It's Streetsville's version of Cheers. Considering how insular this village feels on the best of days, I must say that it was quite refreshing to walk into an establishment that wasn't so... pretentious. When you come into the Franklin House, you'll know what to expect - no-nonsense drinks and food, that "home-y" pub feel and solid service. Can't ask for much more than that. I arrived here for a friend's post-election reception, and soon found myself up on the second floor of the building, which serves as an event space and overflow for the main bar area. Much like the Crooked Cue in Port Credit, there's an upstairs bar, stage and plenty of seating for patrons, but I wasn't here to sit - I came to mingle, and mingle I did with plenty of like-minded civic personalities. My $25 "contribution" to the event (used to help the organizer recoup his campaign debt) was rewarded in the form of platters of wraps. Though I'm unsure if the wraps were made in-house or brought in, the ones I did eat were quite tasty, filled with generous amounts of ham (or tuna), lettuce and tomato. What I wasn't too big on was the upstairs service. A waitress initially appeared to be working the bar area, but disappeared for the rest of the night, forcing me to go downstairs and order a drink. It was here I saw that on quiet nights, this is a pretty great place for a date or peaceful conversation, and there were a few couples milling around enjoying a drink and watching a sports game. Franklin House is one of those "village staples" that knows what it's good at and has been doing so for a very long time (since the 1850's, apparently!). Worth a visit if you're in the village.

    Wings and house salad

We came to The Franklin House for Paintnite but figured to also grab some food before the event. The food was alright and is what you would expect from standard pub fare. Wednesday nights are their wing nights (for 80 cents a piece). A pretty good deal considering the massiveness of their wings. They were nice and meaty and were lightly dusted for an extra breaded texture. What I didn't like was how much sauce they had on their wings. I would definitely recommend to ask them to lightly coat them. They were completely smothered and doused and was too overpowering. The sauces was the extra thick kind. We went with BBQ and honey garlic half/half and both were on the sweet side. Too much sauce meant that the wings weren't as crispy as I would have liked. The house salad was also fairly standard with normal spring greens though I had hoped for better tomatoes and red onions that weren't so overpowering. We added grilled chicken and they weren't the greatest either as they were fairly dry

    Humongous wings

I came here on wing night where the humongous wings were $0.80 each and boneless wings were $0.60 each. When I say humongous I mean 3 inches long wings. It was fabulous. The minimum order was 10 which wasn't a bad deal. When we asked for dusted and they weren't as breaded as other places. The skin still had a nice crisp though but we had to ask for more sauce, especially for the honey garlic. The wings aren't tossed but drizzled on. We also got chipotle BBQ as well, both sauces were tasty. Our hostess/waitress was really nice and served us well. I will definitely be returning here when I have a wing craving!

Very nondescript outside facade - no sign telling you what it is other than a small "BSC" (for Bovine Sex Club) painted near the door. Hard to miss though as the exterior is made up a punk rock style sculpture of rusted bikes & other assorted ephemera. The interior is similar, visually. Great sound system & chill vibes pervade throughout. Weirdly the stage is right in the entrance of the club, on your left, with a long bar along the right side, heading back. Great, crowd, great location in cool area with lots of restaurants & plenty of parking - both on the street up to 2 hours & extended parking for a flat-rate of CA$20 (~$14 USD) from 6:00pm until the next morning, just 2 blacks away.

Are the beer cans running out? It's possible. But, it's a dive in the way of the old dives. And the acoustics for bands are... not great. But they are a sign of what once was. Without attempting to try to present a front of a time long gone, The Bovine simply exists today as it once did in that time long ago, before Smokes stickers, before iPhones, back when people would just go to a bar to talk with those they didn't know the morning prior. Bring cash though, unless you're looking to make some big orders, because credit card is a minimum fifty-dollar spend.

Also had the bangers and mash. Mashed were tasty, not like from a box. The beans had a nice taste to it that I cannot pinpoint exactly what the flavour combination was, but it worked well. Went here when there was a live performer. Could get noisy. Some people dance in a small area by the door. The service could be better however.

Myself along with 3 family friends tried this place over the weekend after I had read positive…read morereviews about it and found ourselves in the area. None of us were overly-satisfied with the experience and I doubt any of us would return voluntarily. They do appear to have a nice patio which would seem nice in the summer; however, it's currently facing a construction zone that doesn't appear to be going anywhere soon. It labels itself as an English pub and they've done very nice things with the décor. I especially appreciate the rows of books at the back of the pub. There are numerous flat screen TVs distributed throughout the pub, playing various sports games/races. The servers are friendly and prompt, although, they asked a couple of questions indicating they weren't familiar with the menu. The atmosphere was pleasant and laid back, The menu has "traditional English fare" at traditional English prices. A typical entrée will cost between $12-$15. Their bar menu is more reasonable with beers ranging from $3-6. One friend has a gluten allergy and only had one option to choose from when picking a main. Thankfully, she was somewhat in the mood for salad but when asked how it was, she responded "it's lettuce." Not the best review of a dish I'd ever heard. The rest of us ordered traditional English classics. Two of the members in the party were very curious about the strange aftertaste left by the "bangers" in the bangers and mash. I must admit, I tried it and couldn't label the strange taste either. The fish and chips were decent but slightly over priced. The best part of that dish for me was the coleslaw of which I could have eaten that dressing all day. When time for coffee and dessert, this place lost another star or two. One person in our party wanted decaf (which they didn't have) and the one person who wanted dessert was underwhelmed by the ONE option available, a deep fried mars bar. Those who had regular coffee were satisfied with it's taste. However, the rest of us went to local Tim Hortons to satisfy our coffee and sweet tooth cravings after dinner. All in all, a lot of little things were wrong or missing that gave this place such a low rating. I don't believe any of us will be returning voluntarily in the future.
