We were very disappointed this restaurant seemed highly recommended. They kept claiming they were busy, but I'm not sure how they don't prepare for a crowd on a Saturday night. The Filet was bland and cooked poorly. I'm not sure they can even say they charbroil. The Rock Lobster was also bland, but luckily, you could drench it in butter. The baked potato was cold and nothing special. The seasonal vegetables were not cooked at all and were still raw. The Scallops Casino was an okay appetizer, but the parmesan cheese definitely is from a can. The best part of the meal was the fluffy bread and butter. We were then followed by a good salad bar. Ultimately, the price of our meal was not worth $160, and the expectation we were dining at a higher-end establishment left us never wanting to come back or recommend to anyone. read more

Came here on a Wednesday night for my birthday. We had Jarrett as our server which he was very nice. My husband had prime rib with lobster. His slice of prime rib was almost 1 1/2 inch thick and the taste was amazing. I had filet with lobster and again the meat was excellent. Both of us had lobster which was so good. We were NOT disappointed with anything at this restaurant. I would recommend this place. One note if you sit in a booth it will be darker so you may need your phone flashlight to help read the menu. The Freighthouse is a 4 for me, but could EASILY be a 5 for you. The prime rib is absolutely the thing to get, but be warned that portions are LARGE. I wish I had ordered the "Lighter Fare" size. Your server will of course provide you with a takeout box and you will see nearly every table leave with these, but I try not to leave food on my plate. The prime rib and Au Jus were phenomenal. If I was rating these alone, I would give The Freighthouse a 5/5. I was a bit underwhelmed by the salad bar and baked potato though. I have had a few dinners here but apparently not tonight. I travel and eat alone. So I sit at the bar and have a relaxing few drinks and dinner. After sitting down, ordered my drink, asked for a menu and then a young man approached me. He said his manage just told him that I can only have apps at the bar, no dinner. I have a few issues with this: - Why send this young man who looked to be a bar back or bus'er. Why couldn't the manager be troubled to inform me of a policy changed. I asked the young man when this changed he looked very uncomfortable and didn't know so I dropped it. - Simply why? If the manager told me he may have had a good explanation. I was limited in food selection because I am a business traveler who prefers to sit at the bar rather than alone at a table. This facility has a rule that you can only order apps at the bar. Location is very cool, with a old building decor and good atmosphere. Wine surrounds you and is on the wine list, not just decoration. The Artichoke dip was very cheesy, with good flavor and plenty of crusty bread. Bread served is very good, crusty on outside soft inside. They have a full salad bar served with entrees. The steaks look great, engineer prime rib is huge. The crusted small sirloin is delicious and I would probably request porterhouse be crusted. Service was adequate, but food was horrible. I ordered the catch of the night, which was grilled halibut with steamed asparagus. Halibut should be tender, flaky, and moist. This tasted like they microwaved it for 20 minutes before throwing it on the grill. It was so dry, overcooked, and had no flavor. The asparagus was way overcooked as well. For the price, I expected better. Much better. The staff were nice and considering how unbelievably busy they were, I was forgiving about how long it took to get our order placed. Table of 5 - arrived just before 5pm, received our food after 6. People have criticized the salad bar, but my salad was the best part of my entire meal. Several of us had prime rib, and both my wife and I agree this was the worst prime rib we have ever been served. It was tough and difficult to cut and chew, and very bland. We asked the server to bring us creamy horseradish sauce to help give it flavor, but even after smothering it in sauce and au jus, the meat was pretty tasteless and difficult to chew. I left about half of mine on the plate. My wife had the prime rib and lobster combo and she tells me the lobster was mediocre. I had the combo with shrimp (broiled) and they were dried out and lacked any appreciable flavor. The steamed vegetables could also have used some seasoning, as they were tasteless. I could have chosen a number of big chain steak houses and had a much better meal for 2/3 the cost. Perhaps the restaurant is relying on a reputation of previous greatness, which could account for how busy the place was. Or perhaps I ate there on a bad night. Regardless, for the price we paid, I will not return and gamble on a better meal next time. read more

The drinks were good and the food was phenomenal, from the scallop appetizer, to the crab legs that melt in your mouth, to the very tasty prime rib. My only warning is that the cook who cuts the meat is very generous and the 12 oz prime rib is really 20 oz. This is a must if you are in La Crosse. read more

Ohhh The Freighthouse..... my favorite place to enjoy a delicious meal at in the La Crosse area. You are able to get a delicious steak or seafood meal without the stuffiness! The Freighthouse does not take reservations. So give yourself plenty of time to fully enjoy your evening. We met two other couples for dinner on a Saturday night. Knowing that it was the opening weekend of Rotary Lights we decided to meet at 5pm. We put our name for a table for 6 on our arrival. Then we all met in the bar area for a cocktail. They had a seasonal cocktail menu & I tried the cranberry mule. You really can't go wrong with cranberry, ginger beer & vodka in a fancy copper mug. I love the back bar here... very tall library style book shelves with a sliding ladder. The Freighthouse has the main dining room on the first floor & additional seating upstairs. I think I've honestly only eaten upstairs once. This evening we were seated in the main dining area. I love the captain style chairs at the tables. The arm rests help me act like a lady & keep my elbows off the table. Our waitress, Bonnie, arrived to table with warm bread & butter & went over the daily specials. There is also a cocktail waitress roaming taking drink orders & refilling water glasses. There is no need for us to look over the menu my friends & I always eat the same thing. We started with an order of mushrooms & a steamed artichoke. I don't like mushrooms so I can't speak about these.... but I will tell you between the other 5 they were gone fast! I love eating the artichoke with the warm butter or ranch sauce. After placing your food order you are welcome to the salad bar anytime. The chefs are positioned directly behind the salad bar & they will start cooking your meal once they see you going through the salad bar. I love seeing all the massive cuts of meat going on the grill while I'm dishing up my salad. My dad always says they have "the best salad bar in town". I don't like salad dressing but take it as a reason to get some veggies in. Now the best part... the prime rib! I order my prime rib medium rare & it came out perfectly. The flavorful au ju comes out in a little metal dish on the plate. Your meal comes with choice of potato or the seasonal vegetable. During our visit the seasonal vegetable was the acorn squash. Two people at my table had the acorn squash & loved it. My one friend loved it so much she ordered a second acorn squash! And you can not leave without having dessert! I have been known for eating dinner at another restaurant & then ending my night at The Freighthouse bar for dessert. The Freighthouse has all your classic supper club ice cream drinks that they blend in a kitchenaid mixer. The ice cream drinks come out piled high in a frosty sundae glass. The grasshopper is ice cream blended with cream de menthe liqueur. Then there is the grasshopper pie.... they use an Oreo crust & fill it with the grasshopper then drizzle with chocolate sauce. The Oreo crust does get a little hard from being frozen but it's still damn good! The staff at The Freighthouse are amazing..... shout out to our waitress Bonnie! I have never had just an "okay" experience while dining here.... it's always been great! The food & service is always top notch. Come with an empty belly & plenty of time to enjoy your meal. If you want a beautifully cooked steak, this place is spot on! It starts out with warm, soft bread and whipped butter, so good! The salad bar has fresh greens & veggies. I called early in the week to make reservations fo Friday night. The person answering the phone was very nice and said they don't take reservations but their busy time was between 6-7:30 and if I didn't want a long wait I should plan on arriving early. I'm from Wisconsin and I know that part of the supper club experience is having old fashions in the bar while waiting for your table. We arrived at 7:00, put our name on the list, and were given a 20 minute wait time. They said that they would find us in the bar and wrote down a brief description of us. No electronic devices needed. He was spot on. Twenty minutes later we were seated at out table. Dinners include bread and choice of potato or veggie. The bread reminded me of wonder bread -- not worth the calories. The salad bar was really nice, large, fresh and full of the usual veggies. I liked that it over looked the line cooks and you can watch them working as you make your salad. I appreciated that they offered a lighter fare menu and ordered the small prime rib with house veggies. The prime rib was rare as ordered but very under seasoned and did not come with au jus or horseradish sauce. The broccoli cauliflower medley was pretty much raw. My husbands steak was nicely aged and perfectly prepared. He upgraded to the asparagus and it arrived tender crisp and was excellent. Desert was great -- a huge brandy alexander. Extremely well made and should probably be shared unless you skipped the salad bar (not recommended). I have now supped twice at The Freighthouse featuring a very warm and welcoming front-of-house team who put their backs into serving customers. Yes, I readily admit to not fully exploring menu as of this writing and ordering same dish second time out as ordered on the occasion of my first visit. I am a huge fan of their 12 ounce Ground Sirloin offering made with incredible quality meat, prepared medium and, to me, perfection. My first order called for vegetables and I went all out on second trip by ordering baked potato that was cooked al dente, covered in a lovely skin I at with same vigor as applied to inside of potato. On my first go around I ordered a vodka martini, up, very, very cold, and with 3 olives. I neglected to request very dry, readily admitted my mistake, offered to pay for replacement and well pleased when dry martini meeting all other of my OCD martini requirements was offered, and happily accepted, on the house. Lovely martini My ordering protocol was spot on second time out when I ordered vodka martini, dry, up, very, very cold, and with 3 olives. Again, lovely. Cons: Food was middlin', especially for the prices. Came with a small group. When we first walked in the place smelled like an old person's house (miss you, grandma). Got a halibut special which was boring and a few of the others got prime rib, which while rare, was not tender and was difficult to get into. They have a salad bar for most people's sides, which I think is a very dated option, but I got a salad special with fruit and pecans which was yummy. No one was delighted with our experience. Our dinner was subpar from what we had previously experienced at this restaurant. We always loved the salad bar, but was surprise to find the lettuce tough and both of our dressings (ranch and french) were very bland. The grilled salmon was tasteless, unseasoned, and very dry. The melted butter was also tasteless and did not add any flavor to the salmon. The up charge for the asparagus was very disappointing, it was soggy and over cooked. I wonder if there has been a change in the ingredients and cooking expertise. Sorry to say we are not sure when we will return. read more

We opted to eat indoors in the pub room. Appreciated the limited menu and speedy food service. However, the food was not anything I would seek out again. We ordered potato skins from the appetizer menu. It's a large order, but mostly tasteless. Based on the speed of service I would say the potato was pre cooked and then microwaved when ordered. The burgers were ok and our server was great about getting them the way we wanted. Just nothing special. I can't speak to the restaurant side of things but I won't be going back to find out. read more

In town for a one-day turn for a business meeting and I thought I'd give this place a shot. There was a 1/2 hour wait to sit in the dining room, but I was optioned to sit at the bar (specifically at the rail) to get the full menu options. Good beer selection...I grabbed a couple of the local IPAs... For dinner, I got the 12 ounce teriyaki steak...not bad, but I think my interpretation of medium rare might be a little different than what the kitchen sent out. Dont get me wrong...the steak was great, but just a little overdone for my taste. Still not worth sending back... Side salad and rice rounded out the meal. I also had a most excellent glass of wine while I waited (Oberon Cabernet, highly recommended). Here's why I did not give 5 stars... The scallops were small, flavorless and overcooked. Perhaps they would be better if I ordered them as the entree and not along with the prime rib. Since I was taking this all to-go I did not go to the salad bar and asked to just get the "house salad". This salad comes with strawberries, oranges and pecans on it. I'm allergic to nuts. I'll put a bit of this on myself because I could've opened the box to look at it before I left, but I would have never expected a "house salad" to come like that. Not a big deal but was sad I was not able to enjoy it. Including the glass of wine, my meal came to $48.99. A bit pricey, but I don't mind paying for a top notch steak. I will definitely come back when I am in town again and try some of the other delicious sounding items in the menu. read more

My husband and I had heard a lot about Freighthouse since the day we moved to La Crosse. We finally had the chance to try it for ourselves in January and it did not disappoint! We were able to walk-in on a Saturday and be seated right away during prime dinner-rush time (although our table was probably THE furthest possible away from the entrance). The restaurant was still decorated for Christmas, which was just absolutely beautiful to look at from above as we were led upstairs to our table. The salad bar was absolutely delicious. It had everything I could ever want on a salad, and the ranch dressing was amazing. We both were enticed by their filet mignon special, which featured a sun dried tomato rub. It was delicious! There was so much flavor, you didn't even need to consider a sauce. I ordered my steak medium and my husband ordered his medium well, and both looked on par with those preferences. While we would have loved to try dessert, we just had no room between the delicious, juicy steak, their salad bar, and the warm table side bread. We will definitely be back, and we can only hope the sun-dried tomato steak rub will be back too! read more

For a special birthday trip the wife planned a trip down to la crosse for us! And it being New Years naturally I needed to have some prime rib. Quick little help search brought me to the freighthouse for what some people called one of the best prime ribs so I had to put this to the test. We called ahead (took 8 times to get through) and asked how long the wait was they said 45 mins. With some time to kill before the New Years count down we decided to head down upon arrival they took us immediately to a table (fastest 45 mins Ever). We sat at our table and marveled at the great atmosphere of the place a really nice place to have dinner. We got a beer and wine list, but lacking was a cocktail menu with the huge wall of liquor I think not utilizing it and having a cocktail menu to show it off is a huge miss. Our waiter just said we have the largest bar in la crosse we can make anything. I just went with a go to old fashion. The wife ordered she scallops with rice, and I ordered my prime rib with loaded baked potato both came with salads. Salads came quick and food followed appropriately. Prime rib Was really great didn't even need the steak sauce I always ask for. GREAT JOB! The wife's sea scallops on the other hand were touch rubbery and lacked buttery flavor Luckily I our bread came with butter which she handed to make it a little better.
