IMHO I have never visited The French Spot; however, my sister brought me five kouign amanns from this establishment, without knowing that they are currently my favorite French pastry! I consider myself to be a kouign amann snob. I know what I like and what I expect in a kouign amann. The French Spot's kouign amann could very well be my new favorite! It is perfectly sweet (just right!), buttery soft on the inside, and crunchy on the outside. I am grateful that she thought to buy me five!!! I heard about The French Spot on Insta and wanted to stop in this weekend. We usually pick up our bread and pastries at the local Farmer's Market, but after dropping in we chose an Olive Sourdough (larger than we thought it would be), a Guava Cream Cheese Danish, a Kouign Amann, a Croissant Bread Pudding, a Crème Brûlée, and red bean bun. They only have a couple small tables of seating indoors and were quite busy but unfortunately I think serving their items cold and eating them cold wasn't the best choice as only a couple of them tasted well balanced. The flavors on the Guava Danish and Bread Pudding did not gel well, and while I enjoyed the Crème Brûlée, it wasn't anything I'd come back for. Of all the pastries I liked the red bean bun and Kouign Amann the most but even that would be a bit of a stretch. I'd say the main successful item was easily the olive bread, which the honey adored, but again felt flavor unbalanced - although if you really really really like olives, this would be your bread. While they've been having wifi trouble, the service was friendly and prompt. I just wish I liked their the style of their wares more because I don't see myself coming back. read more

The Kouign-Amann was unique from other I've had. It was like a fried croissant that was crunchy, light, and airy. It was delicious. New pastry spot that opened up in the Concord/WC area from the city originally. Came here early on a weekday and pretty much everything was in stock and there was no line. I got the Ube Crossiant, Guava Danish, and Cheddar Baguette. The Ube Crossiant was the most interesting item out of the three. It was good when it to the balance of pastry to mochi ratio. The mochi was soft and chewy, everything you want fresh mochi to be and when I went the pastry was still warm. My one concern is that rather than flaky, the pastry would be best described as crispy and maybe a little oily/ not so light. I would give it a 4/5. The Cheddar Baguette to me tasted like a Costco Chicken Bake without the chicken in it. I'll leave it at that for now because I think it would taste a lot better toasted up at home. I am interested in trying their other bread loaves next time. The Guava Danish was pretty standard and the flavor of guava is definitely there was it was right on top. I would say again there was the question of is it flaky or is it cripsy? For me, this was a 3.8/5 because it was a little greasier than the Ube Crossiant. At the price point and the hype before opening, I was expecting a box or labeled paper bags for the pastry at the least but it came stacked ontop of one another in a brown lunch bag, which I thought was surprising. I was hoping that the structural integrity of the pretty pastries wouldn't be damaged because of it. Hopefully as they open for longer here we can get a different packaging. We've been to this wonderful little bakery twice and had some yummy baked goods. On the first visit we had a small banana cream pie, pizza focaccia and a ham & cheese croissant. Next visit an almond croissant, plain croissant, Kouign-amann, a morning bun and another individual banana cream pie. Obviously, the banana cream pie was a winner. Actually everything was quite delicious. The only thing I wouldn't get again is the ham & cheese croissant. I prefer thin slices of ham and this was one big long fat chunk of ham. Not my thing. I stumbled upon The French Spot on their second day of being open and this was such a great find! The space is very welcoming with floor to ceiling windows, a large counter for pastries and a couple of tables inside. The staff was very friendly and helped answer our questions about the pastries available. They had quite a busy morning so there weren't a lot of options available, but they were continuing to bring out new pastries during our visit. We tried a total of three items including the black sesame mochi cookie, strawberry shortcake and bread pudding. Butter croissant 10/10 Then I ordered the rosemary focaccia and this is where I give that bread a 2/10 The salt nearly broke my tooth. The sporadic chunks were so large and it hurt. (Flavor was good) but u bite down wrong and u might chip a tooth. Second It was harder than a rock. Dry as a partially soggy crouton and dense. Focaccia as I know it is light and fluffy. Maybe I got day old bread --- u can not do that with pastry/bread. Or maybe I just got there on a bad day where it was over cooked I don't know if that was normal... cuz I will likely never order that item again. Also they don't have anything but drip coffee or regular. The quiche with feta was a surprising fav with the feta being not too overpowering. The Korean garlic bun with the cream cheese is all sorts of amazing in a bite. The pumpkin muffin was super moist and frosting was perfect and mildly sweet. The banana soufflé was super light and flavorful. The only thing I did not love was the matcha cookie. Plenty of parking, inside hosted some tables but most folks usually order by the box to go. Now as for the baked goods, they are fresh, flaky, and warm! We ordered the chocolate croissants, morning bun, cinnamon rolls, spinach quiche, and my favorite Kouign amann. In my opinion, I enjoyed their bakery goodies over other bakeries. The layers of flaked in their baked goods says a lot to how it was made and cooked. Even after the next day, it still taste fresh! Additionally the staff were all helpful and professional. First 100 customers in line get a free pastry of the chef's choice. Exciting to see a top-tier bakery open in the East Bay! This is their second location, with the first one being in San Francisco (which has already been open for several years). I always say if a bakery can make it in SF, they can make it anywhere! Like their SF location, it is a small space with just a few tables that seat 2 people each. What they lack in square footage, they make up for with a space that is clean and bright with welcoming and friendly staff that greets you upon entry, and of course the wonderful smell of butter and caramelization as you walk through the door. There is nothing French about this place. The decor is off, ambience is off and there's no French music. Why does a French place have Korean buns etc? They seem very confused. The hours are way too limited during the week so they're almost always closed. I did finally make it in on a Saturday morning. It's super overpriced first of all. I've been searching for a small, mom-and-pop style bakery near my house for a while. I grew up with fresh baked bread, so finding a place that makes real, fresh bread has always been important to me. I was especially hoping to find a good sourdough spot, and I'm so happy I found this place! I came in about 30 minutes before closing right after work, and they were still very welcoming. The French Spot is Walnut Creek's newest bakery. The lines are long, I came here on Thursday right before 9 am and there was already a line out the door and a few pastries were sold out. The bakery is small but the staff moves fast. There are a lot of options and everything looks delicious so it was a bit hard to pick what to get. You can get a small box with 4 or 8. The staff was asking if I wanted a small or a large box, but I'm sure you can order as many as you would like. It looks like they rotate some of the pastry options. I still have to try a few of them. -Ham, Egg and Cheese Quiche 3/5: I was not as impressed with this one. The crust was delicious. It is buttery and flaky but the egg mix was a bit too runny. The texture wasn't the best and it was a bit bland. -Sea Salt Caramel Apple Pie 4/5: This was an excellent pastry. It is a bit sweet, but it would be perfect to share. -Blueberry Streusel Muffin 5/5: I loved this one. It is not too sweet and buttery. -Guava Danish 5/5: flaky, buttery and delicious! What else can I say. It is a must try. -Almond croissant 3/5: I wish it had a bit more of the almond cream inside. The French Spot is one of the many bakeries in SF that I've been eager to try, and now they've set up shop in the East Bay! I visited shortly after the holidays, and there was still a lot of excitement around the bakery's opening. I arrived a little after 10:30 AM on a Sunday, and there was still a robust line out the door. The pastry case was already starting to run low on inventory, although I spotted the pastries I wanted to try - the black sesame mochicro and the kouign amann. The line moved quickly, and we acquired our pastries after waiting for about five minutes. There isn't much seating at the bakery (it's located in a strip mall with a Trader Joe's and a pet food store), but most customers took their baked goods to-go. The kouign amann was larger in size than those from other bakeries (e.g., B Patisserie, Starter Bakery) and noticeably less sweet. The texture seemed slightly fluffier, but the pastry still had its signature crispy and caramelized bottom. The black sesame mochicro was huge - usually I can easily finish a croissant on my own, but I split this one with my dad. The pastry itself was excellent with many buttery layers and minimal sweetness. While I typically love all things with black sesame, I think the filling would have worked better as a black sesame paste rather than black sesame mochi. The mochi blanketed by rich pastry felt too heavy, and the chewiness of the mochi seemed odd inside the flakiness of the croissant. That being said, I was still intrigued by the unique flavors I saw on my visit - black sesame cookies, ube mochi, banana cream cheese muffins...there are plenty of pastries that I would want to try on another visit. read more
