I've heard a lot about señorita bread, so when I heard about Starbread Bakery, I had to check it out. It's a little hole-in-the-wall spot tucked into an older strip mall, and I almost missed it. As soon as you walk in, you're greeted by a friendly staff member and the wonderful scent of freslyh baked bread and pastries. The display cases are filled with mochi doughnuts, malasadas, and other unique treats. I ordered a bag of 10 señorita bread and a chocolate-filled malasada. The señorita bread came out hot. They were warm and sweet, and practically melted in our mouths. The malasada was covered in sugar, crispy, and filled with gooey chocolate. I'm looking forward to the next visit. A Bay Area classic. When in the area I make it a point to visit and get my fix. Always served pipping hot. You literally just can't have one. I'd say get a bag of 5 and just live a little. Service is welcoming, professional and yet very laid back. They take their reviews seriously and make changes if needed based on customer feedback. I usually go to the Pittsburg location as it's closer to home (and used to go to the Fairfield one a lot when I lived out that way and of course to Vallejo for many years as it's my hometown). Decided to get Starbread last minute on my way to a business meeting and pleasant hill was the closest detour. These are supposed to be given "Hot and FRESH" and I was so disappointed that they were NOT fresh and were stale, warmed up rolls. It was my clients first time trying it and I recall grabbing one during the meeting and almost gagging after the first bite cuz it was dry but forced myself to finish it. Yes, I've had stale senorita breads but as leftovers a day or two after lol... not when first purchasing them as they're supposed to be "fresh" They were also flat looking, and the flavor was just off compared to what I'm used to. Been having senorita breads since their first location opened in Vallejo back in the early 2000s. I honestly don't recall ever being grossed out. Felt silly how much I hyped them up for my clients to try them. Usually people can't have more than just 1 and no one went back for seconds. I'm just more disappointed that I brought these as a treat for the meeting and they were just so wack. Otherwise I'd just let it go. I looked in Yelp and found this location in Peasant Hill. I wanted to try this location since my sister in law buys from the Union City location and I wanted to compare bread quality. I ordered 20 pieces of the señorita bread and we ate it at my sister in law's house to help celebrate my husband's birthday. The bread was still warm and delicious! There are other things to purchase at the store, such as mochi donuts, chocolate, as well as plain donuts, and specialty rolls. The store has a small store front but it does have all the pastries you need to have a great breakfast! Since it was my first visit I wanted to try the señorita bread first. This StarBread Bakery is practically across from Sun Valley Mall, and shares a parking lot with a 7-11. The place is small, no sit down tables here. However, it never disappoints. Hesitating on putting a review for this place because I want to gatekeep this bakery. When I tell you...this senorita bread altered a chemical in my brain... It's so good! To start, it's not too heavy, it's very airy and fluffy and you can eat it in 2 bites! Not too sweet, just the right amount of butter and sugar coating, and when we got it, it was steaming hot! Make sure to warm it up before eating. I got 30 of these little guys and gave it to my friends and family, and they all absolutely loved it. There's nothing quite like fresh senorita bread! So glad that there's a place nearby that sells it. Soft, fluffy, not too buttery and sweet, but definitely an indulgence. They also sell mochi donuts which are pretty good. Nice texture - the dough has a bit of crispiness, and the interior is super soft. Flavors are alright - some of them have more flavor than others. I'd hate to make this review, but felt necessary. My family loves señorita bread and we love bringing them to friends' parties. But this bakery has not been the same, and considering they are now almost $1 each! I consider myself a senorita connoisseur ;) the quality of the bread here has gone down. The bread is supposed to be rolled and filled with sugar butter, and topped with bread crumbs to add some crisp to it. The past 2 years I've ordered, sometimes they're undercooked (I always have to ask them to cook until brown) ; they're not rolled; and because they're not rolled, they come out flimsy and missing that crispiness. It's not the same ;/ I've also ordered the mochi donuts - it wasn't mochi. I think they mixed flour in it, which made it kinda cakey. It's supposed to be sticky but firm. I've also ordered the ube malasadas. The filling was gray and just tasted like custard with food coloring - gray. I don't think there was any ube in it.
