My family has been enjoying the Friendly for years - in fact, it's been one of our favorites in the area. My wife and I were looking forward all week to seeing their new renovations; enjoying a nice St. Patrick's Day meal; and watching some basketball on TV. Even though the restaurant has doubled in size, there are still only two TVs, both over the bar. We chose a booth with a view of the TVs. The stools at the bar were filled with young men, drinking and watching TV. Unfortunately both TVs were tuned to the same infomercial, which was selling eye MAKEUP. Sunday afternoon, on St. Patrick Day, with all kinds of sports on TV (from Nascar to basketball and hockey), and the Friendly clientele were engrossed in eye makeup. I asked our waitress if we could get something else on. She listened, but did nothing. My wife asked the young men at the bar, if they wouldn't rather watch sports - they said "no, we're not fans." The place looked great, but everything else was a big let down. We both ordered the Sunday special - Prime Rib Dinner. All the food came at the same time - Bread, soup, salad and entrees - all at once. Portions were small. Vegetables were stone cold. The potatoes and "warm" bread were room temp, at best. The Prime Rib was definately sub-prime - below average in flavor; small portions and VERY fatty. After bringing our food, the waitress did not come again until we were done with our meal. No one asked if we wanted another drink or offered refills. I am not a picky eater but I still ended up with over a third of my Prime rib on my plate - solid fat. When the waitress finally came to the table, whe glanced at my plate. When she saw the large pile of fat on my plate, she asked "do you want a doggie bag for that?" I said, "For what? That's all fat." What a disappointing meal! Like the previous reviewer, my wife and I both agreed that if this were our first visit, we would never return. We will not be back soon, but will probably give them another chance. read more

You just can't go wrong with the Friendly! Off the hook, yummy food, the best servers, great atmosphere! If you go on the weekends, be prepared to wait...everybody in town is already there! My family and I stayed on Lake Michigan near Coloma, and had dinner at the Friendly Tavern. My mom and I had the shrimp tempura, which was absolutely wonderful, and my sister had Philly cheese steak, which she really enjoyed. The food was delicious, the service was excellent, and their menu had something for everyone. I would highly recommend the Friendly Tavern to anyone traveling nearby. read more

They really are friendly. And the food is good. I got the Turkey Burger, but they happily substituted steamed broccoli for the fries to help me work on my girlish figure. A good, healthy meal for takeout, in about 15 minutes. The turkey was nicely grilled, the veggies on it crisp and fresh, and the bun was fresh and toasty. I lived in the Tri-City (Watervliet/Coloma/Hartford) area for over 20 years and The Friendly Tavern has ALWAYS been my choice of spots for my dining needs. It has a great "Friendly" atmosphere, best food in the Northern County, and is fairly priced. I especially enjoy Mexican night with the 1/2 off Margaritas. The Friendly Tavern is the best thing about Coloma (other than a great summer's day on Paw Paw Lake). The ribs offered up by Ray's kitchen are the best I've ever tasted. When I was there for lunch on November 18 with my wife I had the blackened prime rib sandwich. The prime rib was a much better piece of meat and tastier then the steak I had paid $25 for the prior evening in metro Chicago. If you're traveling on I-94 or I-196, do yourself a favor and take a side trip to The Friendly Tavern. read more

We stopped here while out of town for dinner. We were seated promptly on a Friday night and our waitress was very attentive. The fried pickle appetizer was delicious. I ordered the pulled pork special sandwich and it was good. Not the tastiest I've ever had, but it was good and a nice size. We also tried the fish fry and it was also just good. Finally found a non-chain restaurant off I-94 that was open for Sunday lunch. The place lived up to it's name. Our server, Jessica, was upbeat and extremely accomodating. The food was all right with nothing standing out except perhaps the sweet potato fries. We sampled the Black Jack and California burgers, the prime rib special and the soup and salad combos. This is one of my go to places in Coloma to eat. The prices are very inline with the type of food offered and the quantity and quality of the items served is right up there with much fancier and expensive places. I had the rib plate full rack special for 15 bucks as did my wife and the table of the booth we sat could barely hold all the plates of food that 30 bucks bought. The ribs were cooked to perfection the sauce was just right not overpowering like some BBQ joints serve. I am thinking it was homemade. The salads were huge and fresh with all the right fixings. More than ample amount of sweet potato waffle fries that were not greasy at all very tasty indeed came with nice bowl of broccoli as sides. The beer was cold and vast selection that changes up every so often. Quick service and knowledgeable staff. Bar area seating for grown ups and separate large dinning room for families and large groups very well done for a privately owned establishment . I wish Yelp would let me give this place a negative star! Let me begin by saying that I have been a patron of the The Friendly for over a decade. Back in the day, the lines were out the door for the Thursday night special, Steak! A person had to get there extra early to get a table. Or to get their name on the waiting list. Over the years things have gone down hill for this once great Tavern. And last night showcased that downfall at it's finest. After arriving at 6:30 PM, the prime dinner hour, we were promptly seated. The place was less than half full. A very sad sight indeed for it being Steak Night Thursday and the dinner hour. After waiting for a few minutes, the waitress wandered over and took our drink order. Then, after waiting for quite a few more minutes, the waitress finally came back with our drinks and a promise to quickly come back and take our orders. We already knew what we wanted, we were just waiting for the waitress to get around to acknowledging us. Seeing as though the place was less than half full, what was taking the waitress so long to get our drinks and take our order was baffling. After taking our order, the special of the night of course, we sat and waited 37 minutes for our food to arrive. In those 37 minutes, tables that had come in after us received their orders, ate and left. The waitress kept telling us our food was up next. Next to what??? Larger groups that had come in after us were already feasting away! Finally, after the 37 minute wait, the waitress brought our food. Our COLD food. The baked potato was cold, the carrots were cold and now nasty. The steak was only lukewarm. The waitress proceeded to throw the food on the table and run away. A sure sign she knew what she was doing was not good. Since it was now 7:15 PM and we were starved and dazed over our horrible experience thus far, we proceeded to pick at our food. Our waitress made it her duty to stay far away from us. The waitress stayed so far from us and kept failing to do her job so well that I had to physically track down a different waitress to have her go find our waitress just so we could get the bill and get out of that crap hole. What was once a nice place to meet up with friends has turned into a crap pile that obviously does not need the business anymore if it can afford to pay such crappy waitresses and has the ability to serve cold food. read more
