My SO and I had a craving for something sweet and were headed to the Chamblee area. I pulled out my handy dandy Yelp app and went on a hunt for well rated ice cream. The Frosty Caboose popped up with it's impressive 4.5 star rating, so we decided to give it a try. We were a bit surprised to see hotdogs on the menu when we arrived but it may not be such a bad idea afterall. My SO ordered a lemon sorbet. I am a sucker for anything salted caramel. Even after testing several flavors, I still went with the salted caramel on a sugar cone. Both treats were delicious and satisfied our sweet tooth. It's a pretty neat concept, very family friendly and great customer service. We noticed children playing in, on, and around the "train" and having a blast. There's also music playing loud enough to hear in the parking lot. Parking lot is tight and limited, so you just have to keep all eyes and ears open for little ones in the parking lot when you pull up. Would return. read more

I was referred to the Frosty Caboose by someone at Greenwood Ice Cream which is their parent company. This ice cream is not like any other ice cream you've had. The amount of butterfat used makes this ice cream incredibly rich and creamy. I'm telling you this is high-end stuff not to be missed. It's the kind of place you'll bring out-of-town guests to. I got a scoop of mango and a scoop of green tea. The green tea flavor came recommended because it's more traditional green tea and not overly sweet. Frankly, neither of those two flavors were too sweet. Bother them we're flavorful enough without being overly powerful. The mango even had little bits of fruit in it. Been coming here a few times and always love their ice cream. They accept cash and card and they have a great selection of flavors. My boyfriend and I usually get the pistachio or mint chocolate chip flavor. Their ice creams would melt really fast so I would recommend eating them on the spot. Be prepared to think a bit, because you're going to have a hard time deciding what to get. We all know the best start for a premium sundae is the ice cream. Frosty Caboose will not disappoint on that one, as their ice cream is locally-made Greenwood ice cream. This stuff is made about a mile away. ONE MILE. YOUR ICE CREAM WILL TRAVEL ONE MILE FROM THE FACTORY. Seriously. To get any fresher, you'd have to make it right there. And it's spectacular. And it's made with oh-so-many flavors. Right now my favorite is black cherry. But rest assured, next time I go it will change, because they are all so freakin' good. And you want an inventive sundae bursting with flavor? This place warms my cold black heart for two reasons. First, the name is somewhat nostalgic since the term "frosty caboose" is what my college roommate used to affectionately call his girlfriend, who for lack of a better word was a "prude". Second, I am a Yankee by blood, and thus, somewhat disillusioned by the seemingly endless supply of frozen yogurt shops on every corner in Atlanta. I grew up on real ice cream, but the options for said dessert are incredibly limited in this city. This is where the Frost Caboose comes in - it serves Greenwood ice cream, which has been manufactured in Chamblee for the past 50 years. Ice Cream: The Frosty Caboose serves a rotating assortment of about a dozen different ice cream flavors at any given time, as well as a limited selection of sorbet, sherbet, Italian ice, and frozen yogurt flavors. Ice cream is available in one, two, or three scoops. Vehicles for delivering these frozen treats into your gullet include sugar cones, cake cones, waffles cones, and cups. You can also select from an array of different toppings, including everything from brand name candies to sprinkles and nuts. Shakes, malts, and floats are also available. During my visit, I opted for a cup of two scoops of banana ice cream with peanut butter sauce and Reese's Pieces. The ice cream itself was very flavorful, the portion was sizable, and the toppings were fresh and plentiful. In the end, the ice cream is no Morelli's or High Road, but for the price I have no complaints. Service: Quick, friendly, and patient. There are a lot of options to choose from and the staff are more than willing to allow you to peruse the menu and to try samples. There was no wait during our visit- however, there is only one ordering window though, so my guess is that a hefty line can form during peak summer months. Atmosphere: Consistent with its namesake, this place is shaped like a train caboose and topped with faux icicles running down the sides. It's also situated directly next to an actual train track, which helps compliment the whole schtick. My only real complaint with this place is the lack of seating - there are a few raised wood planters throughout the parking lot that you can squat on, but for the most part there isn't any formal seating. I'm not sure if they own the grassy area next to the parking lot, but that would seem like an ideal area to put a few picnic tables. Cost: Reasonably priced. I don't recall the specific prices, but we ended up getting two cups of ice cream with two toppings each for less than $10. Compared to what I've paid at Morelli's and High Road, that's an absolute steal. Credit cards are accepted. Other: The Frosty Caboose is open year round. Hours of operation are Monday-Wednesday, 11:30AM-9PM, Thursday-Saturday, 11:30AM-10PM, and Sunday, 12:30PM-9PM. They offer free kiddie cone's to those under 3 feet tall, as well as free frozen dog treats. Hand packed pints and quarts are also available for purchase. read more

We eagerly anticipated its opening day because the exterior looked so cute. Finally, it was open and we paid it a visit. The Frosty Caboose has generous hours of operation (I believe they are open until 10 pm every night). They have a wide variety of flavors, all of which are Greenwood brand ice cream, which their website states is locally manufactured in Chamblee. This makes sense - their ice cream definitely tastes homemade, but we couldn't figure out how they could be making it inside that tiny caboose. The staff who served us were quick and friendly. My husband and I, who do not normally like waffle cones, tried one and found it VERY tasty. I really enjoyed the low key, casual atmosphere surrounding Frosty Caboose. It is located in a quiet area and there is plenty of parking. Well quiet when trains are not running by that is. Their offerings also come in big portions and are very affordable. A great date place! The flavors I tried were the Pistachio, Superman (3 colored Vanilla), Banana Pudding, and Coffee Almond Fudge. I ordered the Coffee Almond Fudge in a waffle cone, and a friend ordered the Raspberry Chip (black raspberry with chocolate chip) in a waffle cone. Both were delicious. The coffee almond fudge was creamy and not overpowering. Delicious. The raspberry chip had some great raspberry flavor and chips all over - also delicious! We both loved it and will be back again. The train tracks are the best "downtown" area that Chamblee has, so it makes sense that an old caboose would have been converted into an ice cream shop. Their menu has desserts and light bites (like hot dogs). I always come for ice cream, though. It's not gourmet or amazingly unique, but the cool thing about coming here is the old fashioned dishes you can get. I'd heard about it from a friend and knew it was somewhere in downtown Chamblee. It really wasn't hard to find -- it's difficult to miss that bright red train car. I heard that they had green tea ice cream, which is what I really wanted. How many ice cream shops actually have green tea ice cream? Sure enough, it was on their menu -- along with a plethora of other flavors. They have them listed conveniently on their website too. They offer a variety of sundaes, and they have options other than ice cream, such as sorbets, sherbets, frozen yogurt, light ice cream, shakes, malts, floats. There are a few cone options, or you can get it in a cup for the same price. Waffle cones are a bit pricier than cake or sugar cones. A single scoop will run you $3.25, tax included. Double scoops are $4.30. Triple scoops are $5-something. A single scoop is more than enough, though, because they are generous with the serving size. I got a single scoop of green tea ice cream in a sugar cone. It really hit the spot. It was deliciously creamy and the green tea flavor was there, but not in a bitter way. The ice cream is delicious, and if you care about this sort of thing, it is locally made in Chamblee. It would be nice if there was a bench or something to sit, but I know a lot of people will take their ice cream and walk around downtown Chamblee, which oddly has a LOT of antique shops. There is a paved parking lot that they share with the store next to them. They are open seven days a week, till 10 pm. You can check out their hours on the site. This place rocks! I didn't exactly have high expectations walking up to a big, fake red caboose in the middle of Chamblee, but I walked away a forever-customer! First off -- the customer service. Every person who has served us has been really attentive and offered details about menu items we were unfamiliar with. The setting is perfect. It's like an ice cream scoop's drop from the railroad tracks, and they've laid out some awesome sitting areas to enjoy on warm summer nights. A plus for me, too, since I'm not allowed to eat "food of any kind" in my boyfriend's new truck. Yet. YET! The ice cream. Wow. Yum. I can whole-heartedly say that the banana pudding ice cream is the best I've ever had. And the single-scoop serving in a cup is the perfect amount. This is a neat little throwback in downtown Chamblee--AKA: Chamblee Antique Row. It sits right behind two different rail lines so you can sit and watch the trains go by on a nice day while you enjoy your ice cream. I'd only heard of The Frosty Caboose via Scoutmob (thanks again for an awesome deal, Scout). So on a sunny day off, I decided to spend a little time in Chamblee and treat myself to a couple of scoops of whatever the Caboose had to offer. I ordered two scoops in a cup: pistachio and chocolate chip cookie dough. The chocolate chip cookie dough was okay; though IMO Bruster's has the best of that variety so everything else is going to fall short for me anyway. But the pistachio ice cream was just dreamy! It was perfect: really rich & creamy with just the right amount of pistachio saltiness to it. I went back a couple of weeks later. I was craving a coffee milkshake and wanted to see what the Caboose could do about it. It was good; a little sweet for my taste (I like the raw taste of coffee) so not perfect, but still good enough to enjoy. FYI: If you're going solo and will not be spending more than $5, bring cash. Or low cal flavor) ; if you don't really like the idea of low cal/frozen yogurt, then you might not like it, but if you are okay with it, the product is this amazing cookies and cream with caramel flavoring and a slight coffee aftertaste. We went there a couple of weeks ago. It was our first time visiting the Frosty Caboose. We found them using Yelp. We went to the Southern Custard in Brookhaven to get ice cream. They were the closest to our home and first choice. We stood in line social distancing to get to the front. We were looking for a place with many choices to choose from. This wasn't the place. This is a place where their focus is on the add-on to limited choices. Only three ice cream choices. Vanilla, Chocolate and the choice of the day. The choice of the day was Double Chocolate. We left because this was not what we were looking for. We started for our 2nd Ice Cream location on Yelp. This was the place we were looking for. There were many choices which included many flavors of Ice Cream, Sugar free Ice Cream and frozen yogurt. We made our choices as we moved quickly through the line. The place was packed. The owner said they have been located there over 10 years. We got two-two scoop waffle cones. I got Amaretto Almond Yogurt and Pecan Praline. My girlfriend got Key Lime Pie and Pecan Praline. The ice cream and yogurt was very creamy and most delicious!! The staff was very helpful and pleasant. We will make this our go to place for ice cream!! It's close to us as well!!
