I couldn't be happier with the work and experience I had with Carole and her team at The Garden Tutors. Carole is talented, and knowledgeable when it comes to plants and design. She has so much experience and is happy to set up a viewing of one of the properties she's done so you can see her work and get ideas. I especially appreciate how communicative and responsive Carole is especially after encountering a fair share of people and companies who aren't. She is flexible and accommodating: in our particular case, we had to change plans pending HOA approval. Not only did Carole work up new plans but she was also able to adjust plans to accommodate our budget changes as well. Her staff is reliable and talented. We had concrete work done to match existing concrete. Her workers used care to get the match just right making the new concrete blend seamlessly with the old. Carole and her team did a fantastic job implementing our vision! We have a small/ slightly sloped backyard and love the modern aesthetic. She was able to create a space for both a little lawn, plants, and a retaining/ sitting wall. Carole even went with us to the nursery to pick out the exact plants we liked. There was a need for a lot of communication, but that is not uncommon when working on house projects. Good Luck I saw the not so good reviews and thought well you never know. What they offer is different and i liked that. First off i called and never got a call back, a month goes by and i call again. Carol and i chatted and we set a date that was far out. thats ok im not in a hurry. That time came around and she said her daughter had an inncident and she could not work for about a month, she would call me. Well, that came and went so i called again. We finally had a new date a few weeks ahead. that Saturday she and her father arrived late. did sit with me and she drew some plans. A week or so later received the plans by email but she couldnt find the hard copy. Called her to discuss the plans and the bid. I questioned her on if the plants had any type of warranty and what some of them were and what if i didn't like them. I thought they were ok questions. She told me to go to Green Acres and look at all the plants and call her back. the next day i went and saw most of the plants that she had on the bid. I called her back, left a message and have never heard from her as of today. I text and called and no reply. BEWARE! very unorganized, not reliable as far as i can tell with my experience. My opinion is she didn't like me questioning things or she just, i dont know. I am glad i didn't spend thousands of dollars with her. I will take my money elsewhere but decided other people should know this about them. Truly disappointing. read more

Carole and company designed and installed a drought free garden in our front yard in fall 2017. We love it. Every plant has survived and after 1 1/2 years the plant have grown and become more attractive. We love the walkway and decorative fence she included. I had a few problems after installation and she and her dad took care of them right away. We enjoyed the whole experience and enjoy our front yard garden. read more

My husband and I have a formal-looking house which was landscaped at least two owners ago in a formal manner (and some of the trees are much older). We love the formal landscaping because it suits the house perfectly. We have a good weekly gardening service but they mostly do maintenance, not planting, nor do they advise on what to plant. We also need to extend the irrigation. We interviewed Carole and Jim about fixing up some holes in our landscaping caused by the drought and time. Mostly this is in a border of trees and bushes on two sides which serves as a visual and sound barrier, which is essential because one of the bordering streets is very noisy. The vegetation at that border is pretty miscellaneous and was probably planted by several different owners at different times. We recently had to remove several trees there that died in the drought, and we want to move that area gradually toward a more formal look in replacing them. We also want to plant a front hedge to shut out the view of another street. Carole and Jim were definitely not on our wavelength. We told them we like the formal look, but obviously they don't, and they paid almost no attention to our stated preferences. They did things like glance at the carefully trimmed, healthy privet hedges near our house, sweep their hands over the view and announce, "Your gardeners just have to stop trimming these." And regarding one set of bushes that are on either side of steps leading down from the patio, saying dictatorially, "Get rid of this, there's no reason for it to be there." And when we pointed out that the bushes define the steps, "This [privet] is a weed, plant roses instead." And more of same. They seemed to have no overall idea what to do, and threw out a lot of random but very firm statements. Even regarding the trees we wanted to replace, "If you want a sound barrier plant a hedge instead." Actually, there is a hedge outside the fence, as well as trees and bushes inside the fence, but Carole and Jim have not had to be in our yard during rush hour. We need everything we can get on that side, we just want it to look good. Then they told us various things were obviously not planted intentionally, including a small part of the lawn my husband and I call "Bushhenge" because it is a regular circle of grassy vegetation planted at very even intervals with an area of mulch in the middle. That is the only part of the formal landscaping we don't like, but I seriously doubt that it's accidental. I'm sure they meant well, but we're not calling them back. read more

I had the exact same experience as Debbie R. did in 2015!! Carole and her father did a consultation for $200. She sent me a copy of a sketch she did but without any names of plants. Now I haven't heard from her for 3 months despite several attempts to reach her. She didn't provide the estimate as promised either. At this point, if this is how she treats her customer, I can only imagine how it would be if there were issues once the project started. I am so disappointed as I otherwise liked them and their ideas. She said she wouldn't be able to do the project until October, but now I've waited 3 months for nothing. It would have been nice if she just said she wasn't interested or wasn't able to do the project. Ultimately, a waste of $200 also. read more

I contacted The Garden Tutors after having a bad experience with another landscape company. I had never used a landscape designer before and had misgivings about the process after the previous experience. They arrived on time and discussed my thoughts on the changes I wanted to make. They immediately sat down and sketched out a plan, including recommended plants, discussing each part of the plan in detail. They were very willing to discuss changes and alternatives and I was very pleased with both the design and the implementation. I have strong opinions and am not shy about sharing those opinions and I felt they were very respectful and were able to explain why certain things I wanted would not work (soil, light, etc). Father and daughter came to my house as agreed, listened to my ideas, and made a nice drawing of what it would look like. I was excited with the plan, and they were to send me a cost estimate. I never heard back!!! What's up with that? If they didn't want to do the job, they should have told me instead of leaving me waiting and wondering. read more
