You can tell how a good a restaurant might be if the locals eat there. And a lot of locals eat at The Geneva Diner. When you walk in you'll notice that this diner is small, but they had room for me and my mother. But what isn't small is their menu. They had a huge menu for a diner this small. When I saw a Sloppy Joe on the menu, I knew I had to get it. I haven't had a Sloppy Joe in over twenty years. It was prepared very well (with beef, green pepper, and onions) and had a taste that reminded me of my childhood. The sandwich came with chips. My mother ordered the grilled cheese, which was also good. The service was slow. It appeared that there was only one server and one cook. Overall, the atmosphere and food at The Geneva Diner was enjoyable. I recommend The Geneva Diner. read more

Usually love diners. Neither of us liked the sandwiches we ordered. My Chicken Panini on Sourdough didn't taste good. First it was white grilled bread ot sourdough. Also not a panini. Chicken was chewy. Sauce too strong. Monte Cristo was also not traditional and just so-so. Chicken noodle soup and Potato Salad were good. I ordered the Bill's Breakfast Sandwich the night before from the Yelp app, for pick up the next morning on my way to work. I am always a bit leery of doing that with old school restaurants like The Geneva Diner, but everything went perfectly. I was greeted warmly when I arrived and my sandwich had just been packaged and was ready to go. I was in and out in a second! The sandwich itself was tasty but I could only eat half. It needed salt and pepper in my opinion, so make sure and ask for some. The picture is of the leftover half of the sandwich that I just warmed up for my breakfast the next day. They seem to know most everyone that walks in . It's the way breakfast was growing up . The corned beef hash is homemade. It's eggs , Toast , Coffee and hash browns . It's old timers meeting for breakfast and talking about life . It's hard working Americans looking for a few Pancakes or French toast . No mimosa's served here . It's not yuppie vile . But whoever you are , the staff will welcome you , and treat you like family. I will not be leaving a review of their food, and I wish I could leave no stars. We were never served after waiting an hour, but never getting our breakfast skillet and omelet. Mind you, there weren't many people there who had not been served when we came in. Other patrons came in well after us, were served, and finished their meals but still only drinks were served to us. Not bad quick and go breakfast/lunch place. Too small for me as tables right on top of each other and I felt like couple next to us heard every world I said. Food on the other side was good. We picked a chicken salad sandwich and egg Benedict. The sandwich had a lots of stuffing like cranberries, pecans and celery. Your drink will never be empty. The chef makes very tasty dishes. The Santa Fe and the Country Skillet is our favorite. Good cheap food. Lots and lots of coffee - they were always there with a topper for me. This place is very small. They have 5 booths, some tables and a counter you can sit at. We visited around 830 and there were 2 booths available and lots of counter space. Our server was friendly and we didn't have to wait for her. We did have to wait awhile for our food, I think it was about 25 minutes which was a surprise. The food is served on oval sized plates and the servings are reasonable, not huge, so don't plan on leftovers. Hubby had a Mexican omlette which had just the right amount of chorizo. He got hash browns and toast with it which he enjoyed. He also had a side of sausage links but they were the smaller sized links, not the bigger ones he has had at other spots. I had the egg white omlette which was just ok. I got a fruit "cup" which was very small. Think about those white containers you get your ketchup on the side in. I also ordered some grits which was a HUGE portion and those came about 10 minutes after the rest of my food. This location is easy to find and at that time, we could park right in front. The outside and the inside of the building needs a little TLC. A fresh coat of paint and some repair on the booth seats would do wonders. Cheap and ok. Hubby loved it but me not so much. read more

Breakfast-favorite meal of the day and this place did it very well. The restaurant is small, a quintessential diner with about 10 tables and a counter for seating. It was a Saturday morning so we had to wait a few minutes but the service was timely for a small diner so no complaints there. We ordered two omelettes; the garlic and mushroom with provolone cheese +gyro meat and the Santa Fe. The Santa Fe was OK. It is made with veggies, cheese, sausage and salsa, the salsa was Overwhelming and it tasted like tostitos salsa, so I wouldn't recommend it. BUT I would recommend the garlic and mushroom!! It was delicious. It is not often you find garlic in an omelette so I had to get it. The garlic worked perfectly with the fresh mushrooms, melty cheese and the gyro. I ordered a side of their homemade tzatziki sauce and it was great as well! We ordered a side of sausage and bacon which were both also good and cooked to our liking. One thing I want to mention is the bathroom because it was a bit of an adventure.( if you go or have been you'll know what I mean haha) The door is located in the back of the dining area and to get to it you have to walk down a flight of stairs. It feels like you are walking into someone's basement and there is only one bathroom. I didn't mind it and it was clean, just wanted to add the warning/side note. This is very scary, I am slowly becoming a "regular" here! Not the "coffee clutch" regular, but a regular that appreciates the proprieties of sitting at a counter as apposed to tables and booths. Sitting at the counter of a diner is a different dimension. The owners are damn happy people and always acknowledge you and appreciate your business without being a Burdon. There is No Pinocchio Nose here! However if your a gluten free fanatic with a million questions about the menu, please sit at a table or booth and not next to me at the counter. When you first enter this small diner, you are greeted with the smell of cleaning fluid with bleach. It almost made us walk out, but we were with my parents (both in their 80s) and didn't want to get back into the car and find anywhere else. The room you walk into has counter service, and their were several people sitting there. It was about 12:30 on a Monday, and I noticed they were all having breakfast. There is another small room where there are maybe 12 tables and booths. We were immediately brought back to a booth and given menus. The server was very nice and attentive. My wife and I decided to split a club sandwich and chips. The service was huge and it was a wise choice to split it. My mom had a poached egg and toast, and my dad had a cheeseburger with mushrooms and swiss cheese. The price was low. Two negatives: (1) I already mentioned the bleach smell. (2) the bathrooms are downstairs - and not just downstairs. You go down a steep staircase, down a hall, up another step, then down another one until you get to one bathroom. The bleach smell covers the musty smell in the basement. I understand this is by the Fox River, but it is unfortunate that a restaurant can't get the mildew under control. So, the food and the service were good, but they need to develop more of a focus on cleanliness. read more

Geneva Diner is essentially the definition of a diner. Like, if you went to a picture dictionary (because I -- CAN'T -- REEEEEEAAAAAAADDDD!) and looked up the word diner, you would see a weird pencil-ly sketch of the Geneva Diner. It's small with a counter and maybe 10-12 tables? Staff is incredibly friendly and is probably infused with lots of family members. I think the kid who took our name down for the wait was like 12 years old so I hope he's family. Dear God. The food was diner-ish (exactly what you'd expect from a diner) - nothing fancy, solid stuff. I got the veggie omelette with swiss and it was really good! Our waitress was really nice and we all had a nice time...that is until my three year old needed to use the bathroom. I've never seen the Saw film series, but I imagine that any bathroom scene in Saw was inspired by the bathroom at Geneva Diner. We walked down a creepy staircase with burgundy red carpet down to the basement level of the building. We then turned a corner and saw a sign with an arrow pointing to the bathroom. Then you take one step up to get to the bathroom, which is a one room with a sink and toilet. But the toilet is one additional step up from the sink level? It's so weird not to mention not very accessible. It's also not new - so old and gross! We did our business and ran away. So in a nutshell, I am telling you to go to Geneva Diner but hold *it* for home. Trust me. read more

Its really simple average breakfast food, But yeah theres no point in expecting the best of ever thing, i just leads to alot of disappointment. The servers are always friendly and coffee is always hot. My favorite thing in the menu just so happens to be the one thing thats bashed here on yelp. The corned beef hash. I visited The Geneva Diner with my son this summer, after a day playing at Island Park. Luckily the diner was not full as we visited during the wee and the location is pretty small, and I imagine they can run into long wait times on the weekend. The service here was really fast and we were taken care of right away. Staff was nice and not overly friendly. Our food was delivered quickly and my son loved his pancakes. We ordered the Mickey Mouse pancakes that looked more like teddy bear pancakes, but he didn't care. He loved the banana eyes, the strawberry nose and best of all - the chocolate chip mouth! Went here the other morning for breakfast with my family (5 adults & 3 kids). I called ahead and let them know we would have a larger party and they let us know it would be a little wait but only about 20 minutes. When we got there, I was surprised by how small it was. It really is diner sized. So it has a few booths, a few tables, and a long counter to sit at. Anyway, they pushed the few tables together for us, and we had plenty of table room. The service was great: pleasant attitude with lots of smiles, constant refills on everything, even patience for the little ones to order. Our server was excellent, and they have a good team because other servers offered refills to us as well. The food was top notch as well. It's breakfast, and it was a typical breakfast. Not real fancy or anything, but all delicious. As a group, we got a lot of different things: eggs, pancakes, waffles, oatmeal, omelettes, bacon, sausage, and even soup. Everyone loved their food. All in all our experience here was awesome. Great food, great service, and, come to think of it, great value. Our bill was less than ten dollars per person. I only wish I lived closer, because I'm getting hungry just writing this review. read more
