I love a place that lets me walk-in for an affordable cut. Although even under normal circumstances the shop can fill up easily, even with 4 barbers at the helm. They are all nice guys who clearly know what they are doing. I have never had a bad cut. I have also never waited that long without one of them suggesting I should come back another time. Barber was friendly and made for a comfortable walk-in barber environment. However, I was a little discouraged when my barber refused when I ask for my hair to be cut shorter. I was asking for a typical men's cut, a tapered fade on the sides and back with the top just trimmed (a cut I have had done many times from other various barbers). This he did not do. Upon asking him to go shorter with the razor, he replied "do you want it how your asking, or do you want it to look good?" I didn't appreciate this response as people are allowed to want their haircut however they please. He continued by saying he "has been doing this 15 years" and to "trust him". If I wanted him to cut my hair how he wanted, I would have said so. A barber cutting hair that long shouldn't disregard what the customer is asking for. After refusing to cut my hair a second time as I continued to insist, I ended the cut there, paid and left. My suggestion, if trying this barber for the first time, make it very clear what it is you want, or at that point, go somewhere that won't give you this type of hassle. read more

The quality of the cut was good, this review is aimed at the sanitation standards. They sat me in the chair of the previous customer, using the same comb/razor/scissors/etc. Nothing was properly sanitized. The comb was rinsed under water for less than 5 seconds in front of me, the different razors were just brushed off with a very dirty looking grill-style brush. Barber didn't change gloves between cuts. Regardless of covid, any barber shop should take much more serious steps to clean their equipment. read more

I've been going here for years and wouldn't consider any other barbers in Boston. Like many, however, I'd held off getting my haircut for much of the pandemic since I was working remotely. I finally went back a couple weeks ago and found Summer Street Barber Shop just as I remembered it - inviting, friendly, and professional. Just with facemasks and, sadly, fewer customers. There's no better place in the city to get a professional haircut at a reasonable price. Ali is great for a chat. They usually have soccer on TV. Went to Summer St Barber last week and got the worst haircut I've had in years. I've been going to Summer St barber consistently for 4 years now and have always had hit or miss experiences. This last hair cut was the deciding factor to not go back. The barber gave me the laziest, worst, least gradual fade I've ever seen. He demolished my cowlick in the back by hacking at it for 5min. He never used scissors on my hair... this is a barbershop right? Not only is the haircut bad, it's also very difficult to work with. He cut too close to my natural part and now my hair is flopping on the wrong side of my head, even after trying to combat with an arsenal of different products. I'm disappointed because about every other time I get a really good haircut, but that's not nearly consistent enough. The guys are nice and the shop is clean and in a convenient spot. read more

Excellent classic downtown barber shop. I'm a 30 year old business professional and work downtown so this place is perfect for me. Make an appointment, I can't stress that enough. They are always busy (which should be your first indication of a good business), so don't expect to be a walk-in during lunch hour and get cut in 15 minutes; I see this happen every time and I'm sure some of those people have written the oddly bad reviews. You're not going to get greeted with open arms by walking in during their busiest hour and expecting to get a chair right away. Odds are they just tell you to make an appointment and come back because they don't want you to wait for 30-45 minutes. Find one of the barbers you like and stick with them, asking for an appointment by name, I have my favorite. If you tip these guys, like any good service business, you'll get awesome treatment and they'll remember you when you come back. Ali runs the show, he's the older guy in the middle chair and usually answers the phone, I think he is the owner but not sure. Make no mistake, this is a classic men's old school barber shop, so if you're looking for something different, don't go in here. Once in a while I get my beard trimmed but it's not really the hot shave type of place, although I've seen them do it. Good solid cuts, normal downtown financial district pricing as expected, and your in and out in 15-20 minutes. Some of the guys have thick accents so speak up. read more

After having been subjected to a multitude of "hair specialists", I was very glad to find an authentic, old school barber shop conveniently located near my work. The fact that they take appointments is extremely convenient and helpful to businessmen like myself with no spare time in the work day to wait in line. The service was friendly and the barber was very attentive.... he kept asking me if everything was to my liking. Customer service was top-notch! The cut worked out okay, but the the service was mediocre at best. Walked in to an empty store this AM and sat down, only to be pushed to another seat just before the cut was about to start. This was my first time trying out this spot, but I got beat out by a regular customer who was doing a walk in as well. Guess I know that they cherish the regulars here, but do not like to try and build a relationship with a new customer. Anyway, the barber I had did not introduce himself or try and engage at all, but just asked what I wanted (which I respect, for the most part). He had an eye on the TV pretty much the entire cut, watching SportsCenter or whatever it was. Regardless, it was evident that he did not care to build a true customer relationship. The cut itself was half decent and he was responsive when I asked to go shorter, etc. Safe to say that the owner's (I am guessing?) actions at the beginning of my experience will not have me back there for a $30 cut. Within 20 minutes I received a great haircut, a nice wash, and met some super cool people. I work in the financial district and the haircut was professional, clean cut. I tried to head down during lunch but unexpected things had come up. I know these guys have places to be after closing time so I made sure to tip generously. Still my favorite barber shop after a year and a half. I've got to know the guys and they are really nice and friendly. I've changed my haircut a couple times since going and they are always able to get it right however I describe it. I also never feel like I'm being rushed, which is nice. After they finish up they always ask me how it looks and if I want to change anything - if I do want it shorter, they are happy to go back and do it for me. A great way to avoid waiting is making an appointment. I have never had to wait more than 5 minutes when I called ahead. They take walk-ins too but you will probably have to wait during their busier hours (after work and Fridays). One of the other good things is their product selection. I really like the American Crew line and they have all of it. It's cheaper there than Amazon, and significantly cheaper than if you got it at a drug store. The best thing is they know what works for your style. I used Fiber when I had shorter hair but when I grew the top out they suggested Forming Cream - it worked perfectly. Definitely going to keep going here for the rest of my time in Boston. read more

My coworker decided to take a stab at this place because of all the good reviews, and he was sold on it, so I decided to follow suit. I wanted to give it a try because my go-to place is somewhat of a trek, so it would've been nice to perhaps find a place closer to work. The haircut itself was solid. Hicham (sp? based on other reviews) had good attention to detail (as mentioned by other reviews, too), and the price is great for the quality. The overall haircut, though, is a bit more conservative for my taste since I tend to change things up every other month or so. It looks great - dont' get me wrong, and I'm obviously not dinging them for it since it's a preference thing. However, it's leans more towards a corporate-style haircut, which definitely plays into their location since it's smack-dab in downtown haha. I still highly recommend them, though! read more

My first cut was pretty spectacular, although this is coming from a guy who has never had a go-to place to get his hair cut. Knowing that this place exists down the street from where I work will certainly change how/when I get my hair cut from now on. In fact, even though I've moved across the country, I still go to Ali every time I'm in Boston. I also like that Ali's shop is a proper barber shop. Why? "NO" "so, NO, No" was the answer. Please just tell me nicely, in a nice tone, "no sir nothing today" or simply "no, sorry". It's very easy to do.
