Another YELP find! Took the husband for a cultural experience at the Museum of Natural History and needed an inexpensive place to relax and enjoy a few drinks and good food. I did a quick YELP search and found the Gin Mill! Perfect! When we first walked in it was crowded and a little overwhelming, as big groups were crammed at the bar watching March Madness. Luckily after one of the games ended, some of the rowdy groups left and we were able to find a place to stand until a bar table opened up. $2.50 Coors Light (um, why bother when other good beers are less than $1 more?) $3.25 for the Peak Organic Summer Peach and $3 the Gin Mill Amber. I enjoyed a few of the Peak Organic Summer beers and a Jameson shot for $3.25. Jameson was definitely watered down so don't know if that's worth it. I say skip it. Service at the bar was fast and friendly, and after waiting for a few, a small table opened up. Many good size TVs above the bar and above the entrance. Coming back for some cheap beers & eats to watch a Mets game might be an option! For food we ordered the sweet potato tater tots with spicy mayo dip, alone these are worth a drive into city. So good! I don't like leaving 1/2-star reviews, however when customer service is nasty enough to produce the experience I had this evening, I have to make a statement. My alma-mater was hosting an alumni event at The Gin Mill and my girlfriend and I were attending, as we were both alumni. Logical, right? Well unfortunately, the university we came from was out of state, and her ID was denied and we were not given a reason other than "It's a fake." No blacklight, no form to check it against, no reasoning -- just profiling. I asked to speak to a manager, however I was informed that as there was no manager on the premises, the bouncer /was/ the manager. To make a very long story short, we were unable to attend our alumni event thanks to the rudeness of this staff member. The only reason I'm leaving 2 stars over 1 is that the rest of the bar staff I spoke to showed a measure of empathy and were helpful otherwise. Probably would advise other organizations not to hold events here for anyone who is possibly under the age of 40. read more

This is my colleagues go-to happy hour spot. It's spacious, with an out door seating when the weather is nice. The happy hour is also really good, with quality liquor also on happy hour. The food is super tasty, especially when drinking. My favorites are the potato tots and the loaded nachos. So good! The crowd is a mix of folks drinking after work usually. It's super casual and chill. I'll go again with my work colleagues for sure, as that's the only time I'm drinking on the upper west side. read more

Late lunch here today, had a great time. Good selection of beers on tap and a good bar menu to choose from. I had the jerk chicken burger, thought it was seasoned perfectly. Also thought the French fries were great. Place has plenty of room to hang out and I imagine it gets crowded here on a weekend night. I was here on a Saturday afternoon and it wasn't very packed. The happy hour is bomb.com. The happy hour is from 11:30 AM to 8 PM. I think it may be all week long because I came on Saturday. We were getting Ramen a block away and while we were waiting to be seated we decided to get a drink. It was super cheap and really great service. Great bar for happy hours after work. They have enough space to accommodate big parties (company happy hr - doable). The service is pretty quick considering it gets busy. They have a space available for private parties downstairs with a bar. read more

Met up with some friends who stay in New York here, we were told it was a bar that had a consistent flow of people. While it wasn't super crowded it was perfect for our outing. * This is a review for the private room downstairs that was rented for an event * A friend of mine had a going away party and that is how I ended up at the Gin Mill. A $40 cover was going to get us a few hours in the private room downstairs with an open, top-shelf bar. And it did! There were probably upwards of 30 people during the peak of the party, but the two bartenders were able to keep up with drink demand very well. They were fast, helpful, and didn't tired of filling our beer pitchers. Wait, did I mention they had two small beer pong tables in the corner? It was an unexpected treat! My only complaint is that the cups they had were some weird re-usable plastic ones. I can understand the desire to have ones you can clean, but these were the absolute worst for any drinking game (as I type this it occurs to me how crazy I sound - but trust me on this one). I didn't have any of the food, but did drink a fair amount. They made a decent gin and soda and the rest of the night I moved to Bulleit neat so can't comment too much on the mixed drink front either. All in all, though, it was a good time and I'd consider Gin Mill again for a similar type event. read more

Great spot! Came to The Gin Mill for a private event at The Speakeasy Room. It's a neat space downstairs with a full bar and ample room for a party of probably up to 40. Drinks are strong, beer is cold--can't really ask for much more. read more

This is a great spot! It's a quality, reliable, neighborhood spot and sure to please whichever crowd you're with. There are plenty of large tables, two tops and bar seats, so everyone is guaranteed a decent place to sit. Rumor has it people like to dance there too. If one is feeling athletic they can head to the back for a game of beer pong as well. Our bartender Jason was really outgoing and friendly! He even helped my friend and I out by charging our phones for us behind the bar. I can't speak for the food, because we came only for drinks, but will definitely have to try out one of their burgers. Nice bar with a sit-down area towards the front, and 2 beer pong tables in the back. Main downside that made me dock it a star is that there was a weird draft by one of the pong tables the whole time we were there, which made everyone (on the side of the draft) keep their jackets on. read more

It's always an enjoyable time here. Although my friends and I usually come here for the drinks, we finally tried the food. Came here for the first time last week. Definitely go here for the happy hour!! Got there on a Friday night at about 11 and it wasn't overly crowded like Jake's Dilemma. Everyone in here is pretty much doing their own thing, so that's cool. Just like everywhere there is that one drunken asshole making a fool out of himself. This is a bar. Not a bar/lounge/club just a straight up bar. So if you're looking to grind on someone look elsewhere for that. No complaints really. The Gin Mill is one classy establishment. And when I say classy, I mean it's not. However, that's the beauty of it. If I'm in the mood for any of the following, The Gin Mill will not be my destination for the evening. 1. A romantic ambiance that really puts me in the mood. 2. Floors that are not so sticky they practically rip my shoes off my feet. 3. A gastronomically impressive menu. However, there are plenty of reasons why I enjoy frequenting The Gin Mill: 1. Visited yesterday, and overall just ok. The server started off well and then pretty much disappeared. I came here looking for good wings as other reviewers mentioned, and the boneless wings were great (tender and not overly breaded), but the bone in wings were not nearly as good as I was hoping. I have never been to this bar on a regular night. Anytime I have been to the Gin Mill, it has been Saturday in the Fall. The University of Florida Alumni club, known as the Gotham Gators, host events here for every game. The passion for orange and blue football oozes out of the bar every Saturday, and you will be sure to find a bunch of former frat all stars and their sexy co-ed counterparts cheering for the best team in the S.E.C. Like true nostaglists, the alumni here outdo their undergraduate buddies by "reliving the good times", but this time their bankroll exceeds Cluck-U, Burrito Brothers and Pizza-By-The-Slice. (Well maybe the Pizza can stay) The shots are endless, the pitchers are ubiquitous and the energy during the game seriously rivals that of the real Swamp back in Gainesville. For all the Gators' rivals and losers, e.g. Ohio State fans, lingering around the UWS on Saturdays, just trade in your jerseys and submit to the best team in Florida, in the S.E.C., in the country. I mean, you can easily do a Gator chomp with beer in hand. read more

The Gin Mill is a step above your average dive bar. A baby step...but a step none the less. It's not as frat-esque as some other places of it's sort, and your feet don't stick to the floor too much. I completely forgot the name of the bartender who was behind the bar when I was there, but I do remember that he was a sweetheart. It gets the job done when it comes to booze. Every Sunday they have this sweet drink special...pretty much any mixed drink or beer that you want for $3. I'm pretty sure that Down The Hatch and Off The Wagon are owned by the same people, so that explains any similarities you may find. read more

Great place for hosting private events. Hosted a private gathering downstairs in The Speakeasy Room. It's pretty small and very casual; they told me that maximum occupancy is 100 but it's really 100 will fit if you're all smushed together. I genuinely expected around 80 people to show up, but there ended up being about 150 (maybe more?) people coming in and out throughout the night. But overall, so pleased with the staff, the location, and the service. They asked for us to meet a $1000 minimum during the 3 hour period we had the room reserved, which was one of the cheapest minimums/rates I received when I was looking at different venues in the city. Drinks are like all under $10 here, which was absurdly cheap. They included a beer pong table for us. Bartenders were all sweet and helpful, even though I'm sure they were under a lot of stress. Would host a private event again but probably for a much smaller crowd. read more

The atmosphere is one that boosts rustic sports memorabilia while capturing a warm modern twist that makes me feel the comfortability of my own home. This two tiered space, has both a private room downstairs, jostling Bar with dining area and Seats Outside when its summer time. The bathrooms are kind of sketch and small but, but hey you can't have it all Take advantage of that private room if you're looking to host a small event, it's the perfect size and vibe. The Gin mill is your go to sports bar especially in this area, with lots of TV's and plenty more seating. The food is a tier above your average bar food. With classic Wings/ surprisingly moist tenders, fries cut to order and an overwhelming slider game. I'm gladly eating here even if that wasn't my intention. They have plenty of drink specials, numerous beers on tap and lots of deals so you don't have to worry about the bank roll. All the food and drink prices here are priced slightly lower than most places, without sacrificing quality making it a steal for NYC. The Service is revitalizing as it shows what true dedication to the customer is all about. The Servers and Bartenders just get it. They give you what you want even before you know what you want. Correspondingly the Bartenders are all smoke shows, so there's that. We had an awesome really energetic bartender Marina who made me a Cinnamon bun and salted pretzel shot, although to some this may have called into question their masculinity , they were mad good and I'm ordering these every time. Nevertheless this is a great bar whether you're looking for a great game day atmosphere, or trying to push the limits to that revered 4am closing time. One of the best bars on the upper west side for EVERYTHING. Happy hour until 8:00 pm is something you never think is important until you work in Manhattan where getting out of work "on time" is a myth. I love being able to go home, change, have dinner and STILL have time to catch happy hour here. On top of that it's CHEAP. I'm talking $4 for a blue moon cheap. Amazing place for easy drinks and decent service. As for food it is REALLY well made "crap bar food." Chicken quesadilla is basic yes, but more flavorful than any other quesadilla I've tried outside of a mom and pop Mexican restaurant. Always love the nachos AND they even have avocado toast all day for those trying not to get sick from grease. All in all my favorite bar. 100%. read more

Went in one night with a friend after work and there was a group of guys in their 30s, one of which had chewing tobacco and was spitting all over the ground. Disgusting - I have never seen this behavior and I'm from the South! I handed him my empty glass. However, I am giving the place 3 stars because you gotta love the drink specials - only reason I go. That and the beer pong in the back when I want to relive college. read more
