Despite living in CT, my husband and I can always use a staycation! The Goodwin doesn't disappoint! It's perfectly situated in downtown Hartford within walking distance of a lot of great food! Rooms are comfortable and most importantly spacious! They offer valet parking but lots of street parking around as well! I would highly recommend to anyone visiting or looking to get some R&R! PS. Five stars earned all around!!! I booked last minute while out of town. It was worth it, so much so, that I booked a second night and invited my bestie to join me! The first night was in the king room, complete with a fireplace (decorative). They had faux candles lit in the fireplace. Loved it! The rooms are not carpeted and that is the move!!! Loved it!! I get cold feet so I went out to get booties for my feet.. There is a thermostat in each room to adjust the temperature to make sure you are comfortable. The rooms were clean! Shout out to the Housekeeper on staff!! No stray hairs or dust detected! The Library at night is a whole vibe!! I wish Yelp would allow videos because the spot was lit! Loved it! There is a restaurant across from the reception that was also really nice. The staff were amazing all around! Very lovely women and men who clearly want to make sure your stay is beyond amazing!!! I am really not happy that I failed to get the name of the housekeeper. But to the good leaders reading: she worked the 5th floor on the hall where room 521 is located! Please give her a tremendous thumbs up!! (Or a raise!) The valet staff were the best! Please tip these men!!! Tip them well because I would freeze doing what they do!! They grabbed my luggage, and warmed my car too! FYI, valet is $30 (you can go in and out) per night. It was freezing so I was happy to valet. The hotel allows you to bring dogs for an additional $100 non refundable fee. There were dogs there but I never saw or heard them until we were checking out. People with dog allergies be aware. But honestly, the rooms were so clean and with no carpet, you may be ok. The staff whose names I did capture: Linda, Nicole, Bren, and Bibi were amazing! We even ran into a man who was a GM and he was delightful!! The bartenders (both ladies) were so attentive and gave us drink recommendations! Loved them but did not get their names! Ugh!! (One had beautiful locks, the other had rhinestones as part of her makeup) Both lovely ladies!! This stay was perfect and my bestie was absolutely rested and impressed with everything, just as I was! The Goodwin, named "Hartford's Boutique Hotel." I've stayed in a lot of places that have dubbed themselves to be "boutique" but just end up being "old as hell". The Goodwin is a rather old building, as much of Downtown Hartford is but it is an absolutely beautiful building. The entire hotel operates properly under the "boutique" name as they have all areas, including the rooms, as a rather swanky, classy way. The whole place is updated and modern, but maintains a very historic feel to their concept. The rooms are very nice and comfortable. The shower was great other than they have the "no door" concept, and no matter how I had the shower head, the floor of the bathroom would flood. Just a slight design flaw is all it is. But other than that everything was great. Bed was super comfortable and the staff was amazing!!! The staff was very professional and polite throughout the property. As what other reviews had said here, its a very classy exterior hotel and the inside looks quite nice too. Very nicely decorated hotel. For food and drinks: there are no food or beverages available (closed due to Covid) at the hotel and most of the places nearby for breakfast are closed (most food places open at 10AM); so for breakfast options I could only find NY Deli and More that is the closest place that sells water and breakfast. Also, there is a Starbucks in the next block of the hotel. Many places in walking distance for lunch and dinner though! We really enjoyed Trumball Kitchen. Would love to get some water before retiring for the night, but alas no water to be found. I knocked down a start because our business meeting host delivered welcome bags for us that had water, but was never alerted from front desk to retrieve it (we only saw them when we checked out). The room itself was pretty, with blue ceilings and awesome looking bathroom tiles. What threw me off was the exterior view: it was the lobby of an office building. Be careful if you are changing your clothes, if your curtains are open! No wonder it was so dark in the room. The bed was quite comfortable. The shower was really nice to look at, but it was virtually impossible to know how to get hot water. Took me 5 minutes to try and figure it out and as previous reviews said, the bathroom floor was quite wet, even after placing the bathmat. Rooms are a mixed bag of sizes and amenities, however, all are quite adequate. Shower!!! Cringe! The settings fluctuate from cold to scalding. Taking a shower is an ordeal. The Goodwin is a historic boutique hotel located downtown. It was originally constructed as upscale apartments in the early 19th century where on visits home JP Morgan would stay. In the 1980s it was converted to a boutique hotel. During my stay I experienced excellent service. There is valet parking and there is a restaurant and a nice swanky bar just outside the lobby. The rooms are very spacious. My room had a king bed. The bathrooms were super nice. The sheets and bed we're very comfortable. One nice amenity were the robes that came with each room. Some of the rooms face in indoor courtyard so when you're making a reservation one I would recommend requesting a room that faces the street as you might have a bit of a better view if that something that matters to you. Overall, I really enjoyed my stay at this historic hotel. I would definitely stay here again when visiting in Hartford. read more

My husband and I attended a wedding in June 2021 and opted to stay here, to really enjoy ourselves. This is 100% a boutique hotel. Every detail was thoroughly planned and decided. Every inch is picture worthy. I don't think I took enough photos! The cafe downstairs was closed (due to COVID). The gym is beautiful. Very spacious and the bay windows overlook the streets. They had a nice selection of weights, cardio machines and more. You cannot go wrong electing to stay here, even if it is just for one night. read more

I was in town for business for a week and decided on The Goodwin to be my 2nd home. I am so glad I did! From the moment I arrived, everything was perfection. The staff was friendly, attentive, helpful and always available. The hotel smelled amazing. The decor was a lovely mix of old and new. My room was large, well decorated, comfortable. It is centrally located to so many things. They have a wonderful coffee bar by day/cocktail bar by night called Piña and a sit down fine dining restaurant called Parrón. Excellent stay. Very clean and spacious rooms. I love the colors they used with the royal blue. Only thing to know in advance is that the trash comes right down the street the rooms are on and is very loud in the AM, so bring ear plugs. I would have definitely enjoyed the bar downstairs and was sad to see it was closed. It looked like it was going to be open again soon though (this was in December). read more

Possibly the worst hotel stay I've had in years. 2 nights. Not one HOT shower. Room 219 is by the service elevator which is used 24/7 by an incredibly loud staff. On night 2 there was a floor party happening at the end of the hallway. Loud screaming. Pot smoking. Subwoofers pounding music. No security at this property. The sweet front desk clerk was left to confront the party. The room was nice and clean. No desk for work just a bistro table to work on if you're on business. Did I mention not ONE HOT shower in two nights? The property itself is gorgeous. Historic old building. Great downtown location. Just not a good hotel if you're looking to work and rest. It was clean but this was our 1 year anniversary staycation getaway. The people who worked there were very nice but the room prices are not worth it:( Here are my reasons: 1. it was very hard to get parking (2 hours we drove around and I had worked a 12 hour shift in an UC facility prior to this then drive a whole hour). All of the garages were closed before 10 so if you come for a Friday into the weekend stay BE AWARE you may have to pay for outside parking that is unsupervised (if that matters to you of course for me it did I just had gotten a new car) 2. Obvious damages. Nothing to crazy in my picture but for 300 a night :/ I expected better 3. Dining areas are mostly closed very early on the weekends so nothing much to do around there. 4. There is no view only a white wall outside your window... literally lol 5. You can hear your neighbors and people out in the hallway that's right folks no privacy 6. We paid for a deluxe king room. Don't let it fool you there is honestly nothing at all deluxe about it. It's an average king size room. 7 lastly if your paying 300 a night I would expect a pool, a fireplace like it shows in the internet pictures, or at least a view. Nope none at all.:/ so technically 3 stars for me but the workers were so nice so I give a 4 read more

My husband and I live nearby but we come here if we want a night away from the kids or are seeing a show. It's a lovely hotel and they've done an amazing job with the decor and renovations. The front desk staff is friendly and the location couldn't be any better. Rooms are never ready on time. Check in time is 3:00, but if you arrive at 3:00, you'll be asked to have a seat while Housekeeping is finishing up. A few odd design choices. In the shower of my current room (see pic), rather than a sliding glass door, there is a glass partition that extends half the length of the shower. It looks super cool and modern. However, the water goes all over the floor! Even if you aim the faucet at the wall and try to block it with your body. It's just such an example of form over function. read more

Not knowing Hartford too well and not wanting to spend our time driving, we decided to stay here for the flurry of weekend activities we had planned in Hartford. It is a gorgeous hotel with an old world feel. It is in a convenient location and is within easy walking distance of many restaurants, the XL center and Bushnell Park. This boutique hotel houses a fitness/yoga room, a restaurant and a library bar which in the morning hours is converted into a coffee/bakery where one can use the complimentary coupon to get coffee, pastries, donuts, or a frittata. Very convenient. The rooms are large, clean, and feel so elegant. The bathroom is spacious and has a wonderful shower. The first night all was very quiet, but the next night we could hear the band playing in the bar area. Book online for cheaper rates than the hotel itself offers. There are definitely deals to be had. Valet parking is provided at $28 a day, but there are so many places to park close by for just $10. The Goodwin garage is not affiliated with the Goodwin (Although it does connect to the hotel) and their parking prices are even higher, so try to avoid this garage. They do offer a shuttle that will take you anywhere within 5 miles, but we did not use it nor was it explained to us how far in advance they would need to know if we wanted to use. Staff was not outwardly rude, but did seemed a bit aloof and did not provide much info or suggestions (on shuttle, parking options, etc) or maps of the capital. Appearances aren't always what they seem or don't judge a book by its cover comes to mind when I think of my stay here last night in room 216 It's very well designed, modern and looks amazing. But what good is that if things don't work and service is bad?... I started off in a "standard king" that ended up being a handicap room with a tub full of hair. So I called and was moved to a real standard king. Clean and was nice (see pictures) but... The shower doesn't work. It's either so hot you can't stand it with no pressure (see video) or it's freezing cold with pressure. So... after a long day and night I had to take a cold shower. Not good especially at a hotel that's $150/night with s group discount. Then when I told the front desk about the dirty tub and cold shower they didn't do anything. They didn't discount anything. A Hilton or Marriott would have stepped up. I wouldn't go here. Just not worth it. read more

When we stay at a good hotel, it's the little things which make a difference. The Goodwin at nearly $500/night fails this test miserably. Nice building, nice rooms, but small details were missed repeatedly. As to our stay, first and fundamentally, the hot water was, shall we say, inconsistent. If you can't consistently provide hot water, at $500/night, this is an issue. Also, our room lacked many of the small things which make your stay better. No dairy for the coffee and tea, only wretched, toxic coffeemate. A $7 price tag on a bottle of water. Nickel and dime stuff. No microwave in the room. Only a single shower curtain, not a double. No hook in the bathroom on which to hang wet towels. The room attendants did not make up our room, despite a request. Also, they took our robes and, despite being assured by the front desk that they would be replaced, they never were. Our coffee setup was not replenished. There were no cups in the room. The valet gets automatically charged every day, even though we used it only once. Just a laundry list of minor things, except for the hot water, which make the difference between a pleasant stay and a stay which results in our not returning. Details details details. read more

3.5 overall due to some hiccups, though I really loved many elements of this boutique hotel and feel like it'd be a solid 4 if we'd had a more seamless stay. VIBES: Modern eclectic, intimate, moody. It's full of character, which is a nice change from the sterile generic hotel rooms of larger chains. ROOM: The rooms are a fair size (with spacious bathrooms and super comfortable beds), though the quality is inconsistent. Our first room (505) had a slanted ceiling so felt a little smaller, had two bedside outlets that didn't work, two broken bulbs in the lamp, and had very thin walls (we heard coughing, construction, and intimacy). Our second room (an upgrade) was great and was much more insulated, but then didn't have hot water. It's an older building, so I totally understand that there's quirks. I think if those could be addressed, this stay would be great. AMENITIES: Wifi is strong and suitable for working. There's a Keurig for coffee and tea in the room in addition to water, and they do a coffee hour as well. Valet parking is available and a better rate than the nearby garages. FOOD/DRINK: We didn't eat at their restaurant, but we did try their bar which was a bright spot. The bartender and hostess were incredibly friendly and engaging, drinks were strong and delicious, and they were open to TV channel requests. Would be a great date night spot. SERVICE: Overall, solid. They were able to accommodate an earlier check-in after a red eye (before 11 AM is a half-day rate, afterwards is free if there's room availability, shout-out to Marisol for her help with this!). Check-in was really efficient. We wish the noise issue had been fixed sooner (we brought it up a few times with different people before it got addressed), but it might've been due to limited room availability. LOCATION: No complaints, it's fantastic. Walkable to a Starbucks and lots of restaurants, safe, there's street parking overnight if you're outside of valet hours, and it's close to the highway and airport. read more

I'm making the review that I wish I read when I picked the Goodwin for a weekend stay with my wife. First the good: the building is clearly historic and has been nicely updated inside from the lobby and bar to the hallways and rooms. The king room we had was clean, spacious, the bed was comfortable though clearly not in a modern way but a worn-in way. The front desk and cleaning staff were very nice and all practiced Covid safety protocol. The bad: the worst thing about the Goodwin for me is the ridiculously paper thin walls. To be a good hotel one of the fundamentals is giving your guests the ability to rest and sleep comfortably and Goodwin misses on this badly. We could literally hear people in the neighboring room talking at regular volume and going to the bathroom as if it was our own, no joke. Forget if they start raising their voices... I'm guessing this is because the building is super old? But if you're going to remodel it into a "5-star boutique" hotel you need to figure out some sound proofing to make it at least reasonable. If you're a heavy sleeper or have quiet neighbors you'll be ok, we had a couple drunk guys. Walking down the hall I passed rooms full of people with music and shouting, I shed a tear for their neighbors. The shower was super weak, the water flow pulsated halfway in and we ran out of hot water before the second person was finished. Did I mention you could hear your neighbor peeing? Just making sure. This is a fine hotel and has some nice touches, I want to like it but for the price tag it's severely lacking. Average hotel is fancy clothes. The room was nice in theory--very large suite with lots of windows, however it was too sparsely decorated and furnished to feel warm or welcoming. Instead it felt cold and baron. None of the restaurants were open when we stayed--there was a wedding taking up most of the downstairs areas. The bathroom amenities were nice. I had booked this hotel super excited because it looked nice .... Had some good reviews . The biggest complaint I have because I'm still disgusted is that the bathrooms were extremely dirty. Upon arrival and walking into the bathroom in my room there was long hair , clumps of hair , and small bodily hair everywhere on the floor . Indicating it was not scrubbed or cleaned ! So gross! We got changed rooms but unfortunately the next room and bathroom had small bodily hairs sticking to the floor! I asked for the room to be clean putting the sign on the door every morning I left and well every time I came back to my room it's obvious they DID NOT clean the floor during my whole stay! The pubs and head hair was still sticking to the floor along with other stains! I didn't sleep! And the mattress had eyelash hair ! Absolutely not coming back to this hotel. So gross ! Unsanitary for sure ! Wear sandals going into your bathroom here ! Tv didn't work either first night ... no creamer for the coffee in the morning , valet parking had no number to contact if they weren't there to pull your car out you just stand there and wait until the valet people come .... read more

The Goodwin has done a stellar job in converting this property into a modern, first class hotel. This was one of several hotels my family and I stayed at over the course of a two week trip and quite possibly our favorite of the trip. LOCATION: I don't see how you can beat this location. It is smack dab in the middle of downtown Hartford, just two blocks from the XL Center and near a number of restaurants and bars. We were in town to check out the Hartford Yardgoats baseball team and the ballpark (Dunkin Donuts Park) is less than a 10 minute walk. It's also walking distance to the state capitol and the Wadsworth Atheneum. The Mark Twain House and Harriet Beecher Stow Center are about a 10 minute drive away. ROOM: As there were three of us, we opted for two queens and were put up in Room 231, which overlooks Pearl Street and TheaterWorks. Everything in the room felt new. There was enough space that we didn't feel overcrowded, enough natural light (even on a somewhat gray day), and plenty of outlets for your phone/laptop/tablet. The floors appeared to be some kind of faux wood while the bed sat on a rug with a nice blue/white/gray/black hexagonal pattern. There was a little bit of street noise but not enough to bother any of the three of us, and the beds and pillows were comfy. Do note that the Deluxe Double Queen room does NOT have the plush blue love seat that is shown on the hotel website. The room is not wide enough to accommodate that much furniture. I assume that's a picture of a Double Queen Studio room. BREAKFAST: When you check in you'll get vouchers for breakfast at Bar Pina, the donut/coffee shop downstairs. The donuts are first class - flavorful and moist but with enough density to get a little chew. If you don't like donuts and pastries you can choose to get a frittata burrito or frittata sandwich instead. While the bar are is nice and comfy there aren't nearly enough couches and tables for everyone when it's full so you may have to lurk around for an open space or go back and eat in your room. read more

This is a very cool boutique hotel with a great location and decent staff. There's a good bar and breakfast shop, a decent restaurant and it is super clean and well decorated. I was particularly impressed with how quiet the rooms are. The place was jammed and we never heard another guest from our room. One nit, the dinky pillows are a drag. One was about the size of a travel pillow and one the size of a standard pillow. I like a lot of pillows and I like them big. I'm sure if I asked they would have provided more pillows, but it's always a gripe of mine when a hotel pillows you like you're at a campground! So now I'm done with my pillow rant (that wouldn't occur to most guests I'm sure) I otherwise highly recommend the Goodwin if you're staying in downtown Hartford. I've stayed at about 4 places within walking distance and this is easily our favorite. read more

Not worth the cost. It can't be a five stars hotel. 1) There is no in room service. There is no blow dryer and the shower did not have a slide door. There is no spa and they only have two restaurants with limited hours. The breakfast is basic coffee, tea, and oatmeal. 2) In most of the nights I stayed in, there was a lot of noise coming from the street or other rooms. 3) The suite was too dark even during the day, no matter how many lights I turned on or how many windows I opened. 4) They only placed one water bottle (7 dollars) in the kitchen which I drank and housekeeping never added another one. 5) The website had a picture of my suite with a bathtub but it didn't have a bathtub when I got there. 6) The TV had smart tv but it didn't work. 7) I informed the staff at the desk that I lost my debit card at the hotel. I thought they were going to actively search for it or interrogate housekeeping but they told me the only thing they could do was call me "if they found it." They weren't curious at all. I thought they were going to take it more seriously. 8) I had to ask the front desk for toothpaste. I am unsure why they didn't have it available on the suite. Overall, the suite was pretty and clean. It is a beautiful hotel and the desk/restaurant staff were nice. The two restaurants had great food and drinks. The hotel is near a lot of restaurants, museums, and downtown. Still, this is definitely not worth the cost. read more

Such a great addition to Hartford. I'm so glad that there's a fun and stylish hotel option for when I visit, because previously the hotel choices in the area have felt pretty boring and corporate. Even better that they've revived an old and historic hotel in a classic building. They've done a great job of maintaining the history while making it feel fresh and modern inside. I absolutely loved my room, from the plush bed just begging to be jumped into to the modern art on the wall. Sometimes it's obvious that when an old hotel is revived they cut corners, but not in this case. They've built in all of the small details that make staying in a hotel room a pleasure, like plentiful light switches and outlets by the bed, lots of closet space, and a coffee maker. I think my favorite part of my short stay was the shower. I don't know why more showers don't feature this genius idea of putting the hot and cold water knobs near the outside so that you don't have to stand in freezing or scalding water while waiting for your shower to be ready. It's also a huge walk-in deal with perfectly clean tiles (again, perks of going to a newly opened hotel) and great smelling toiletries. The hotel features an equally stylish bar and restaurant, perfect for grabbing a drink or meal before stumbling to fall into that luxurious bed. I stayed here for the Hartford Marathon. It was very conveniently located to everywhere I needed to go to for the weekend. There were several great restaurants, all within walking distance. The room had excellent decor. The bed was clean, nice, and comfortable. The flat screen TV was nice and big which made me feel a lot better for missing out on being at the NLCS baseball game. The bathroom was nice and spacious with clean towels. The shower had good water pressure. The folks working the front desk were very nice and courteous. The immediate surrounding area is pretty clean and quiet. I would definitely not hesitate to stay here if I'm ever in the area again. read more

Everything was clean, the room and hotel itself was very nicely designed, checkin and checkout was very quick and easy. I wish I could give it 5 stars but unfortunately we weren't able to experience the hotel at its best state because of Covid Regulations. The bar/lounge/restaurant downstairs were closed, there was also no house keeping, which I think is some of the appeal of staying at a hotel. But I also don't think that the rates were discounted at all even with those amenities not being available. Parking isn't included but you can get a great rate at Capital Lot about two blocks away if you have the hotel code, it comes out to $10 for 24hrs, which is great. And the location of the hotel itself was right in the middle of the city. read more

Check in was easy and front desk staff was knowledgeable. Boutique feel with no more than five floors. Fairly quiet given the downtown location. Rooms are spacious. Excellent space for a working desk and luggage. Tv could be a bit bigger but channels were well represented. Bathroom was of good size but shower pressure was a tad low. Towels were a bit small and scratchy. The bed was comfortable with smooth linens. Sadly the pillows were terrible. They should take a look at this. Staff and support were excellent. Very friendly.
